That is true of most companies, not just in transcription. Benefits are usually sm

only for full-time employees. It only makes sense for a business owner to offer to only full-timers; they do not make as much profit on part-timers, so there is less money to spend on those benefits.

Benefits from transcription companies

I'd like to hear opinions on companies who say they offer insurance to their employees.  Just today I was offered a position by a company who said they offered benefits and then when asking for details, I find out they don't pay a cent toward the monthly premium, it ALL comes out of my pay.  I am sorry folks, but that is not benefits to me.  I may as well be an IC and get my own insurance.  Probably would be cheaper too.  I counter offered to them asking them if I could work IC status and just get a higher line rate........they wouldn't go for it.  Another thing is they require you to type 12,000 lines in a pay period to be eligible for the insurance.  What in the world for?  They are not paying out a red cent toward those benefits so why would it matter how many lines you transcribed if you are paying for the insurance yourself.  This is the first time I have ever heard of something like this and I am pretty ticked about it (I know you can tell).......  In my opinion, there would no benefit at all to being an employee other than they would take your taxes out for you!!!

Not true. I am 10.5 cpl with benefits
There are positions out there.  You just have to look.
No, that's not true. They work with you. Yes, you have to be FT to get benefits. sm
but that is anywhere. They define FT by 12000 lines per period. They average it out. They take into consideration accounts, volume, slow periods, etc. If you are working FT and not getting the lines you need, they work with you to get there.

Someone is just trying to stir things up here, and I am not sure why, but it is very disheartening to see half-truths and lies about so many companies. I love working for Keystrokes. I average 2500-2700 lines per day but I have been doing this a long time and use my Expander for everything. I have an account that is considered a nightmare to some people, but I think that they come into it with a bad attitude. IMO, any account can be great once you get used to it, with Keystrokes or with any company, as long as the line count is accurate.
Where are the companies with benefits? sm

I've been seeking work with benefits for a year now.  I have an IC job with crappy pay (5cpl), actually am looking at another IC job now with better pay (7cpl), though not fantastic.  Part of the reason I got into this profession was to work from home and be able to afford health insurance... what a joke!  I don't make enough to pay bills much less health insurance.

I really do wish the schools were more up-front and honest about this profession.  Don't get me wrong, I actually LOVE being an MT, but the hype of 10 cpl with benefits is crap!  Recently I had a woman approach me and ask if it is true she could make 12 cpl with full benefits after a 6-month course.  I told her if she finds that to give me a call!  A school told her this was possible for her to earn from home right out of school.  HA!

Do you have their benefits, and if so, how do they compare to other companies. Thanks
nm
companies with affordable benefits
Does anyone know any companies that are hiring that have affordable insurance for family?  I need to get a position with insurance.  Thank you for any replies.
Are there any companies out there who provide benefits at start....sm
instead of having to wait 90 days?  If so, how are they to work for?
What companies have best benefits in terms of PDOs?
Two weeks/10 days PDO is not fair and not enough when you have to use it to cover holidays, vacation and sick leave.  I would think there are companies who can do better than that.  Who are they?
Any companies out there that offer the hospital benefits besides Diskriter
I currently work in-house a hospital but they do not have at-work positions and I would like ot work at home so I wondered if there were other companies and/hospitals that hire at-home MTs with full benefits....besides Diskriter as I have not heard a lot of good news about them and it makes me nervous to apply.
Any companies offering benefits on 35 hrs per week or less except Webmedex? Nm

Looking for information on T-C Transcription benefits...
Any current employees that are willing to discuss, please email me.....thanks...
Are there any companies out there that offer benefits to PT employees, such as health insurance?
I know it's a rarity but I know hospitals do.
NOT TRUE AT ALL. The USA-only companies are out there. sm
You have to stand firm and only work for one that does not outsource. They pay well too and stand up for their employees.
This is true for so many companies, especially if you get
s
Are there any companies who offer health benefits to part time employees?
Need insurance.
Companies are hardly offer FT employees any decent benefits so I think is going to be rare to find
them for PT employees. I would love that too, unfortunately, I work too much just to get below average benefits. Best of luck in your search. Honestly, I think the only place you'll find benefits for part-timers is going in-house at a hospital.
That may be true, but other companies use it. Med-Links for one. nm

I believe your point to be true. Because how can companies with sm
thousands of employees have policies that are hardly worth what we pay with high deductibles, etc.? There are companies in my town with just a few hundred and those people are paying just $15 a week for great family coverage.

I think there is definitely something rotten in Denmark!
Bravo - see there are true IC companies out there.

Please realize fellow MTs that usually an IC works multiple accounts and that can mean multiple MTSOs.  You don't need to put all of your eggs in one basket.  If you are asked to work a set schedule which does not allow you to transcribe for other clients, then that's employee and you should be treated as such.  The IRS expects you to contract with more than one client or vendor; it just plain looks better since we are considered self-employed.

A plumber doesn't always work for the Jones family, they do work for the Smith family and the restaurant down the street, etc., etc.

Absolutely not true. It's not just for companies
but professions. My husband is a member of the electricians union, and my father is a member of a pipefitters union. My dad has been a member of the same union for decades, and he's worked at numerous different places through the years. Same thing for my husband.
that's true. companies are STILL charging full rates using VR
nm
MBB Transcription. Is it true that they are just gathering resumes for OSI?

TIA

It may be harsh, but it is true. Too many people come into transcription with false sm
expectations. They expect to get paid to stay home, watch their kids, work when they want, make a fortune after 6 months of correspondence courses.

It takes more than that to be a good MT and a heck of a lot more than that to be a great MT.

With this economy, it would pay to fine-tune skills, work on typing speed, learn new specialties. The best will survive and I intend to stay one of the best.

Not everyone is good at everything.
how many PRN transcription companies are there?

More transcription companies

I just posted a message about TTS, and I have several more companies that I would like ANY information on. So, instead of writing several posts, I'm going to list them here and if you have any info about any of them, please share. I am currently working full time as an employee for a hospital, and I'm interested in becoming an IC for the flexibility. The companies are:

USA Medical Transcription

Iridium Services, Inc.

MedQuist

Sten-Tel out of Mass

SmartDoc

Medical Records Corp of Maryland

World Wide Dictation

Grace Transcription

CTS: Complete Transcription Services

OSI

Thanks in advance for any information!

More transcription companies
Yes, I did searches on all of these and didn't find anything except Medquist. I admit I didn't mean to add that to my list.
Are there any transcription companies who

refuse to use ASR?  It seems to be the wave of the future.

What is wrong with these transcription companies
I cannot believe the lack of communication with the company I worked for for 13 years and the new one that I just quit, after not even completing training.  They show you something for less than an hour and then you are on your own, stuck in your own mess.   Then you go to quit and never hear from the manager who was supposed to call you between 24-48 hours after starting.   I had sent an e-mail asking if the person could call me and no reponse.   I decide to call and leave a voice mail and no response.  I think I am just going to give up transcription.  I had done this for many, many years and really am thoroughly disgusted.
urr!! frustrated with transcription companies!!!!!!
... I am not a person who believes everything posted.. I believe the truth usually lies somewhere between two extremes, so when I would read about all the complaints transcriptionsist would make about companies, I factored in that perhaps there was more to their story not told, i.e., less than optional work produced, whining, not meeting scheduled times, etc. Now here I am experiencing what most are saying about companies and I hate what I am experiencing! I am in school now, and can handle about 6 hours of work a day. I looked high and wide before I accepted a subcontractor position with a small company. The work is good, but darn if after three months, they didn't start dicking around with my expected work flow. It seems the pattern I am experiencing is that as soon as I get going pretty good with one of their accounts, the carrot gets taken away. They cut back on my work, and put me back on crappy account that pays poop. I am a highly experienced transcripitonist, do professional work, love challenging work and can do well at it, do whatever I am asked, I am not a complainer, I don't whine (except now), and have even received feedback from the company on how good my work is, but here I am after a few months making a paltry $200 a week!! I guess I either have to go to school full time to rapidly complete my schooling, or get a job in another field without all the politics!! Just venting, just venting......
Letter to Transcription Companies

To Transcription Companies:

We are Transcriptionists or MLS.  We are faces unseen, but hearts that beat.  We are NOT a piece of machinery, but if you choose to think of us such, then I suggest you think of your machines as following:  In order for you to have your company, you need us.  We perform best when well treated.  We don't require much care, but the care we do require must be gentle.  Like any well-oiled machinery, we need gentle hands and warm touches.  It gets lonely, very lonely being a machine by itself.  Most of the time, the only contacts we get from you are your emails or IMs to us.  The wording of those emails is critical to the functioning of our machines.  A quick, thoughtless brash email lends our machinery to slow down and run boggy.  (Many a personal relationship has been broken by email and IM communication.  It's not a good way to run a business.)  Just like any piece of equipment, maintenance is important.  That maintenance comes in the form of our pay, and we only ask that it be on time and correct.  We produce for you.  We need our maintenance.  Sure, some of us may require a little more maintenance than others, but you end up benefiting from the results.  A little thank you now and then would be nice.  And, certainly at the holidays, we don't expect you all to be able to give us a complete overhaul, but certainly a card, a pen, a special little pad of paper, a calendar, or coffee cup would be much appreciated.  When feeding us input (or QA as you like to call it), we learn much better and produce more when it is given with tenderness and teaching.  Some machines learn best with a variety of teaching methods.  (Even speech recognition needs not only the voice, but the typist's words as well.)  We Transcriptionist machines may need some visual, as well as verbal teaching; and if we only get one, it may take us longer to learn.  It doesn't mean we are stupid; we just each have different methods of learning.  We will give you many years of service and perhaps a lifetime guarantee, if only you would follow the manufacturer's instructions.  Thank you.

A Transcription Machine

Same way you did...just googled some transcription companies.
Thanks for your input!
TODAY'S TRANSCRIPTION COMPANIES
NOT SO MUCH! Why do so many excellent MTs stand for the terrible treatment? Experienced MTs deserve so much more.
AMERICAN TRANSCRIPTION COMPANIES
My Dear Angelica,

In my opinion, USA transcription should stay in the United States.

Transcription companies in general
AMEN SISTER!  couldn't have said it better
What companies have straight transcription

What companies are offering only straight transcription jobs?  A list of these would truly  appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Transcription South and TSI are 2 separate companies
nm
Why do you think hospitals pay less for transcription companies who outsource or do VR?
These stinky companies do not want the hospitals to know that is what is going on because they charge the hospital the same rate whether it is a towel head or a machine typing their work versus a real MT. The transcription company just makes a bigger profit margin and finds another way to take money away from the MLS who live and work in the United States.
KeystrokePro and Keystrokes Transcription Service are two different companies. sm
I have worked for Keystrokes Transcription for 4 years. They are in Illinois and our hospital uses them for both Radiology and Medical Records. The other one is on the east coast and called us this week at work. If you are looking for a company to do your radiology work, the "real" Keystrokes' web site is www.WeTypeXray.com.

Any other companies besides United Transcription use MPWord software? nm
s
Any national companies out there that allow at-home radiology transcription?

Transcript USA and Transcription Relief Services are 2 different companies
I have an interview with Transcript USA on Thursday. I will pass on what info I find out then. I am pretty sure that they do provide the computer though. Don't know anything else right now.
Holistic/homeopathic/complementary transcription companies?
Does anyone know of any holistic/homeopathic/complementary transcription companies? Or, for that matter, what kind of standards these practitioners are held to in terms of documenting patient encounters? Do they even do transcription?

I'm just finding more and more that I really disagree with a lot of straight orthodox healthcare, and I'd really like to step outside of it and work in an area that I'm more comfortable with.

Any ideas?
I have no main squeeze companies and Transcription Matchmaker isn't even a sponsor
so I cannot see how you justify that I show any kind of favoritism to that company.  You are grasping at straws to put down this site.
Glad that's true for you for 8 years. Not true for many. I love the company, but I do run out of
as do many others. Wish I were as fortunate as you.
Not necessarily true. That is not a true test of skill.
Do you know how many people get others to take tests for them? It happens and it happens more often than you might think. The only skill that shows anyway is that you can do it.

We are actually more than a transcriptionist. We are specialists in our field and we are supposed to know some things regarding anatomy and physiology as a working base. That's how we can judge if a physician dictates something in accurately and many do because they can't pronounce or just are not thinking. That's why our skills of basic knowledge come into play and that means basic knowledge of body parts. If our job was just to sit there and type without thinking about what we are transcribing, then all patients are in trouble and this is just based on what I see as a QA person.

It's more than just knowing how to transcribe and some of the companies have discovered how to know what your basic knowledge is based on what you have picked up with your experience by utilizing your references etc. Hopefully that utilization of your references has taught you something that does stick in your head.

Beliefs like yours are just so far off base. You have to know what you are doing. It's not just about being able to listen and type. Base knowledge is a very important thing and the services have to find a way to know that knowledge base that is there in your head.

Phoenix MedCom and Phoenix Transcription in CA are 2 different companies
Phoenix Med is in NY. The posts seem to confuse the two at times.
This may be true... and that is philisophically true, but
and pay bills while being screwed? This is what I think the OP is scared of... I certainly agree and honestly think it is unfair to put people in this precarious position... on one hand be grateful you still have your job, or a job, and on the other, immediately there will possibly be a cut in pay, for which you may have to give up your home, or medicine or reduce your budget for food. I don't know if I am the only one, but I think the OP still has a good head on her shoulders and that may be the problem...at least for employers out there who are switching to VR.. and their employees
TransTech and Medware, are these companies considered large, medium-sized or small companies? (sm)
TIA
Yikes.. That is only inline with companies like Focus and such. "Real" companies pay their MTs
decent rate.  I make over 5 cpl editing. So, if I got that slap in the face, I'd be outta there.
Do the research...most companies, and not just MT companies, do not pay for maternity leave...
we get time off but not paid...and I really don't even understand the point of you posting this...
Webinar -Evolving Medical Transcription: Technology's impact on traditional transcription process

Hey everyone, check out this link. This is what we are up against. Be sure and note how 3M or whoever is the sponsor of this webinar throws in that dictation and transcription is time-consuming.  Nevermind that EMR and VR take more time and money to be successful and it only takes 38 seconds to dictate a returning patient and 2 minutes to dictate a new patient versus 500 clicks on a point and click EMR or the mess VR makes and having to have an Editor come in and clean up the mess. Propaganda that we should know about.
