No, they're not losing money....they're gaining!
If a company charges their clients by the line, I'm sure that line rate does not go down even though the MTs pay does.

ASR pays about 2/3 normal line rate to its MTs. Their ultimate goal is to have the MTs do twice as much work. Therefore, the client is getting their work faster, but paying their normal rate, while corporate gets that money and the MTs get the lower line rate.

Whether the newbies want to realize it or not, MTSOs have not increased MTs' salaries in the past 10 years. They still start out at the same pay as the last century!

This used to be a very lucrative profession. Nowadays, most MTs are considered to be paid at the poverty level. You don't believe me, look it up!

I made excellent money in my very first year but ...
... that was about 13 years ago, and it was with a local MT who needed help for all her own accounts, all easy family practice office visits.  She paid 9 cents gross line, didn't use a counter, just said to manually count the lines on each page (!) but was always at least $5 a page.  We didn't use expanders, had no platform, just used a dictaphone machine hooked up to their office and just typed as it came in, 24-hour turnaround time, and anything that came in after 5 p.m. that day was considered the following days' work.  It was great.  Too bad the big corporations spoiled it for all the little guys out there like me and my mentor.  I haven't made anywhere near what I made that first year since because the big corps ate up all the local accounts around here and won't pay more than 8 cents a line for clinic work.  Sucks.

I simply was exploring what would happen when a manager was informed they would take home half their pay in October. I don't know if I'll make money when my pay is cut. Will you when yours is cut?

I saw on another post where a Filipino Company is offering a whopping 4-7 cpl for IC work.  Don't they know we are paying our own way here, taxes and everything?  I tested with a company yesterday that had over 100 applications for a job posting.   Easy test but "get in line folks"!


You're right on the money (no pun).

Even if they hire at the high end of $12-15 an hour (as advertised), straight typing 1,700 lines a day at 8.5 cpl = $144.50 per day (not counting incentives), compared to $120 for working 8 solid hours of VR (which can take longer than straight typing).  I laugh every time I see their ad boasting $12-15 an hour.  (And this is assuming the platform is a competent and reliable one, which is even a bigger laugh.)  What's so great about $15 an hour to a Transcriptionist who can produce 2,000 lines a day?  I agree that if you need to make serious money, you need to look elsewhere.  I'm still with them full time (to keep my health insurance), but I have another full-time job with another company so I can pay my bills.


If money's an issue, you're better off MTing.
Most QAs do it because they MT'd until their hands gave out & can no longer MT.
You're not. VR = same amount of time for less money.

No, you're in the year 2008, where the results of
most kids being raised in daycare with 2 parents working 24/7 are showing. Kids are a mess and the American family is a total mess, divorce rates 50%, our country going down the tubes, and YES a lot of it has to do with kids being left on their own while mommy works and goes to school, etc.  I don't know the answer, but for sure the results being disastrous are evident all around you. I stayed home with mine and am more than pleased with the results.  Just because children survive and grow into adults does not mean that they are healthy and happy adults.

I am off today and appalled at reading the posts on here.

Are you always this bitter? Do you have a family and friends who are safe and healthy? Count your blessings instead of being so angry and you might see that this is not a bad field to be in. It has kept food on my table for 27 years and will continue to do so. Is it harder now? You bet, but it is not impossible to make a good living of $50,000. You just have to work hard, give it your all and appreciate the good companies that are out there.

If I were an MTSO, I would find out who all these people posting such bitter posts are and find replacements for them a.s.a.p. Negativity spreads like poison, and with the world in the state it is, we should bond together not make it worse.

my first year I made 16k. Doubled that second year. Going on year 6 with (sm)

two local accounts I earned 23,000.00 and a national I earned 35,400... 58,400 this year.  Don't ask me how many hours, though, I really have no idea.  I'm pretty motivated.  (When people ask me how many hours I work a week I reply as many as it takes  I'd say 40-50/week.  I am also a fitness instructer and personal trainer, about 5 hours a week or so.  Decent money (sometimes under the table!) but mostly I just do it for fun and to be social and wear cute work-out clothes. 


that first year was a rough one... but I consider it part of my education.

In the past, it has been all or nothing; if you did not hit the lines for full time for the year, you did not get PTO. I talked to my lead this morning about a last-minute vacation and she told me that the yearly packets are going out in a week or so and that the new policy will acrue PTO by the pay period or month. I like that a lot better, but she also made it sound like they are upping the amount of lines needed to acrue PTO. I normally get between 15 and 20,000 lines per pay period, so I am sure that will be fine but I am worried about the periods that have lower volumes, like most of January every year.

You can accrue up to 140 hours (I think) before you stop the accrual process. Don't have to use it all in one year.
I would stick it out, most places are slow now through the end of the year every year (nm)

I AGREE it IS getting harder to make money.  I used to make $24 very part time 10 years ago and now...well it is Word and platforms versus WP5.1.  I got 7.5 cents a byte line then and I get 9.5 cents a character line now.  That IS a huge different in point of fact.

That is not lying and saying that they don't offshore work, as was stated by another poster above, but saying that if the client wants the work to stay in the US, they will keep it here. Sheesh.

If you think about it, they're sleazy and undermining enough to do something like that, cover their behinds.  They better hurry up and drop the bomb, with the lack of work people are leaving.  Come on MQ, screw us over already and get it done with.

I only made 7.6 cpl and that was clinic transcription (with 6 years experience at that). I was told there were no raises per se, but would be eligible for bonuses ($100) a time or two per year. That was earlier this year. I didn't stay with them long because more money came along.
If $184 for self only, that is a LOT of money.
