After an absolutely crummy winter/spring...

Posted By: T on 2008-05-14
In Reply to: How's the weather in your neck of the woods? - springfeva

Here in the beautiful Pacific NW, I mean really cold, below normal temps, snow very late into the season...

We are expecting some 90+ degree days starting tomorrow into the weekend - and I for one am HAPPY!  My poor halter tops haven't seen daylight for so long I forgot what they look like.

"Baghdad" update: crummy weather!
Our weekend in SF was unseasonably crummy - even for San Francisco! I was in Golden Gate Park on Sunday: Fog, drizzle, & wind. Bah!
Good idea for a crummy product
I was disappointed with it and really annoyed that it wouldn't fit in the dishwasher (just too tall no matter what I tried) But maybe it will make a nice vase, anyway!

Spring
GOOD THOUGHT.....I can't do cold weather......
I do that in the spring. I usually get a tool
and clip the dead parts back and remove them. It just makes them look all fresh and pretty, and then the dead sticks won't tear up the leaves if you get any wind. I am not certain if it is essential, but it improves the look a lot.
I wait until spring, too sm

I figure the dead leaves and stalks offer a little protection from the cold. The bed where I have the hydrangea stayed iced over for more than a week this past winter, and I thought I had lost the hydrangea. But in the spring I could feel that the branches were still supple and smooth at the bottom so we just cleared out the dead leaves, trimmed off the dead tips, and it came back beautifully. It has blossoms all over it that are getting ready to burst into bloom.

We just moved into this house last summer and I planted the hydrangea in a place where I thought it would have enough shade, but we had a bunch of 100+ degree days I was afraid the heat had killed it....until the cold came along and then I thought the same thing about the cold. But it is definitely "the little hydrangea that could"!!

We are getting chickens this spring. .sm
So I have been doing a lot of reading about eggs and chickens. And yes, I have been very bored lately!
Spring Break
Our Spring Break is the week of the 13th. That's one of the weeks I take off from work so we can do things with the kids. Usually we take our vacation then and go away. Luckily it's usually half way decent here so at least the kids can go out and get some fresh air and play with the other kids in the neighborhood. Does your school district have any type of program for the kids during the break? Here there's a camp that the kids can go to at various locations.
may be same problem as we have in winter -
extremely dry skin - daughter's BF has a pit and they were told to use a veterinary oatmeal shampoo and he is on some mega fatty acid capsule, vitamin E, but the oil on his food may be accomplishing that.  Try a humidifier, keep the heat (if you are in a cold area, of course) lower.
You don't have to do winter wonderland (sm)
You can do traditional Christmas decorations if the majority celebrates it. I am sure this will not be a big suprise to him - he has seen people celebrate Christmas all his life. He doesn't expect you to stop celebrating it but he doesn't have to participate of course.
I like winter, especially since I dont have to get out

I don't hate winter, but
enough is enough! Yeah, I know it's only February. We've been spoiled here in the Northeast. The last few winters have been so warm I'd started believing in global warming. Now I'm starting to think new ice age instead!

My animals have spring fever
MY 2 cars, one is 13+ and the other is almost 7 are bugging me along with my dog to play, and just pay some attention to them.  It is nice outside and they sure have the spring bug.  Hard to resist them.  Just took the dog for a long run in the park with another neighbor's puppy and though it would calm her down but now, she bring in her stuffed animals and when I ignore her she will throw them at my chair to get my attention.  So I keep taking 5 to 10 minutes to play and now am behind.  Oh well, it only happens a couple of times a year so gotta enjoy it.   But even the 13 year old is sitting on my desk, which she never does, and playing with my papers, pens, knocking things down and then just looking at me, like "Did I do that."   But it is so nice here in Portland today, up to 60 gotta take advantage as will probably rain tomorrow.
I saw my first robin of spring this morning!

I guess spring really is coming, even though we're still under 18" of snow in my neighborhood (yeah, it's shady in here).  I'm about 30 miles north of Albany, NY.  Anybody see a robin farther north?

spring cleaning blinds
I have blinds on my windows that are dusty and yucky.  I'm wondering if anyone has a good way to clean them without taking them down.
if you go to Pismo...go in the spring or fall...
Summer is very very foggy most of the time (I went to college in San Luis Obispo about 15 miles away). Also, if you do go, you MUST go to Del's pizza in Shell Beach for dinner one night. Fairly inexpensive and very good food--not just pizza. In my opinion, it is the best restaraunt in the area.
Talk about some spring cleaning
My house is getting in really good shape. I, like you, also have some medical issues, 1 being fibro. Some days I am so achy I just could cry. Most days my ribs are so sore cannot touch me. Having said that I continue to work because my husband thinks I can do the work IF not working and I just do not care to do it. I do washing and hang that up in the washroom, cleaning person hangs in closet because the poles are really high for this 5Ɗ" person to jump up to. I pay the person myself. My husband does not so what I pay for, work for and really mine to spend as I like.
Got 5" here...lots of snow this winter...nm

Yes! I'm like a dog shedding my winter coat! nm

I'm a backpacker and winter camper.
I've even had frostbite before I learned how to stay warm. I buy my socks from REI.com. (Sometimes can find the same brands cheaper at places like Campmor.com and SierraTradingPost.com)

There's a good selection, and you can read the descriptions for each. The socks I buy keep my feet warm while I hike ten miles in the snow. You might not need that level of warmth! Also, they are kind of pricey. Good luck!
winter wedding what to wear?
What does a guest wear to a winter wedding?
robins don't always leave for the winter
any more.  Depending on how good food sources are.  You probably have a hawk if his tail has stripes horizontally.  He may pick off a robin.
Summer here is great.. wish I was in FL in winter though :)

Winter blues in New England
I have lived here in the NE for 20+ years and am fed up with the winters. I'm single so I'm thinking of picking up and moving south (East Coast though). Can anyone point me in the right direction for a decent area? I want sun and warmth!
Spring Break!!! Let's go to the Labrador Islands!!

North Dakota. :D Freeze in winter/fry in summer ;)

Well, this is our coldest period right now.  But having it -30 to -60 with the windchills certainly isn't any surprise.  In summer we can be in the 80s and 90s with very high humidity.  LOL!  We always say, if you don't like the weather... just wait a minute.

And if you live where it freezes in winter, the filter MUST be emptied

That's New England - cold winter, warm bread! nm

will high gas prices affect your spring/summer travel
j/c.  I wanted to go to the beach this year but I don't think we will now.
so what you're saying is that if your child lost her coat you would make her go the winter(sm)
without one simply because someone ELSE may have stolen it?  Wow.
winter wonderland and chestnuts roasting on an open fire
and baby, its cold outside.  have more than 1!!
Crazy curly in the summer, poker straight in the winter
My hair changes with the weather and it is impossible to get a good hair style because it looks so different from one day to the next. But I like the color, natural blond with reddish highlights.

Anyone else going to Cancun for Spring Break and concerned about current safety concerns
We're all set to go to Cancun for Spring Break and then we hear all of this on the news about people being careful in Mexico because of the drug cartel activities and killings etc. Does this even involve Cancun or is it just the border places. The Spring Breakers are being warned about going so it makes me wonder if it is just the borders as most Spring Breakers do not go to the border towns. Does anyone have anymore information. I have a good friend who met her husband in Mexico, has crossed the borders etc and she said going to Mexico isnt worth risking your life because they hate Americans. Yikes.. I don't know whether to go or not or if I'm just being paranoid now.
Rain, rain, RAIN daily, flooding, 'nados, never above 78, not since last Sept. Is winter over yet

ABSOLUTELY . . .
If children find out on their own, they think they have figured out the great mystery of life, if someone tells them (especially an adult), they are taking away a precious, magical childhood time. My daughter believed up until she was 11 . . . and now that she and my almost 11-year-old son have figured it out, they think THEY have uncovered a great mystery!!! They think it's funny, actually. My 7-year-old still believes and he will until he is at least 10, if I have anything to say about it. That's like talking to them about faith in my opinion. That's the parents' responsibility
Absolutely..
My stepmother had a TAH almost 20 years ago and has had hot flashes ever since then. Sorry, that's probably bad news!
Absolutely don't do it

Same story here. Sit through sales pitch, very very hard sell, push push push. Then, instead of the "jeweled timepiece" which was the LEAST expensive prize, I got a cheap Timex that didn't even run.

Run run run away from this!!!!!

absolutely I would have said something
What if these kids are in his care a lot?

What if he does this behind closed doors (very likely if he struck out at the little one in public) when mommy isn't around?

What if he isn't their dad (or is) and he's abusing them but she doesn't know it?

As a mom, I would definitely want to know if someone struck my kid. Especially if I was a single mom (which I have been) and this guy was a boyfriend who was responsible for caring for my kids while I was at work or otherwise occupied. I would never leave them with him again, I could tell you that for certain.

Doesn't really matter what their personal situation is. The fact is, the kid was struck for no good reason and the jerk should have been called on it.

If he made a stink or if she made a stink, SO WHAT, follow them and get a license plate number then turn them in!
You-re absolutely right
A few months ago I was at a class I take at the YMCA and one woman was telling us how her daughter-in-law had a miscarriage. She was saying how hard it was and finally I spoke up and said I too had miscarried. After I said that, at least 4 other women (out of a group of maybe 10-12) admitted they too had miscarried. I was stunned. I had no idea how many of us there were. Knowing I wasn't alone might have helped when I was going through it.

On the other hand, if anything good came of it, I think it made me a better mother. I cherished every moment of my children's lives and took none of it for granted.

Absolutely!
Men like that feed off of control. My ex did the same thing. Just pull your boots up! It'll be okay. Talk to your family (parents? siblings?), see a lawyer (don't tell your husband), and look at getting into counseling. I've been exactly where you are and I know what you're feeling. It's awful, but the sooner you get free, the better you'll feel and the better off your children will be.

Did I read that he stays off for days without contacting you?
