Schoolhouse Rock
I love those! I want to get them for my 7-year-old son. I learned so much from all of them, especially the preamble to the constitution. Your kids are gonna enjoy them!
Remember Schoolhouse Rock? I just got the 2-set DVD from sm

our local library.  My kids are loving it! They are 3 and 5 and 11. All boys.  The 3 year old loves it the most.

I can't believe how much I'm learning! I just learned a few things on the song "I'm just a Bill, sitting on Capital Hill!" HAHA

This was not Danny's or Kris' musical
genre. Really think Kris is gone tonight.
I also have a 1st grader.....
First grade is a lot more difficult than kindergarten and it is very sad that your daughter had the type of kindergarten year that she did last year.

My son is also a first grader this year. He had a really good kindergarten teacher with a class of 15. His first grade teacher is pretty good too, but this class has 23 (which is still low compared to other classroom averages in other schools, But what a difference a few extra students make!) I volunteer in his classroom every Monday and I am shocked at what is required out of first graders these days! This is such a difficult grade because kids are all at different levels at this age.

With extra support with her work she will do just fine, it will just require a little time and effort. I think it is very commendable that you and your husband do have an active role in your child's education and are willing to go the extra mile to help boost or supplement what she is learning in school. That will go a long way with helping her get through these first couple years of school without struggling too much.

If you are looking for a good program to help boost literacy and keep your daughter's attention- consider checking into the Letter People program by Abram's & Company. (They have a website.) My son loves the Letter People and they have helped to boost his desire to read. There are many other great educational programs available out there too. You will find something that she will enjoy! :)
8th grader
My absolute favorite was when they would get in fights while instant messaging on the internet. My daughter is a senior, and even she shakes her head and laughs about it now.
My neighbor has a (now) first grader - sm
and she has her ears pierced. Mom buys her semi-precious stones, opal earrings, etc. The kid loses them all the time. She has many, many singles now. I would not advise anything of expense for any child under the age of 12. Either get inexpensive CZs or birthstones that are under $20. Hypoallergenic posts are a must though.
Defiant 2nd grader too
Wow! Is it the time of year or something? The last few months, my little boy has been absolutely defiant. He is fine in school, except when he goes to reading group (he does not like the teacher), he has tried to come home by having the clinic check his temperature. This went on for days until they caught on that he did not like the class. So he went to the guidance counselor and they are not allowing him to come to the clinic around reading group. (Boy who cried wolf.)
Now, at home he is angry all the time, complaining all of the time, rude to his stepdad, mean to me and his dad and my husband believe I have to spank. I have never spanked in my life and I don't even know how to approach that...Just today I was thinking there was something wrong with him, oppositional defiant disorder or some other diagnosis (see that's the MT in me), but reading here, maybe it is a phase (hopefully). Still I too am looking for a solution. His stepdad took his TV out of his room because my boy would not take a shower for days and he lied that he did. I was asleep because I work third shift at the time. But taking the TV away worked he took the shower. Then, I hear this morning when they were at the store he picked a glass beer bottle off the curb and just smashed it. I asked him why he did this and he was trying to think up some reason but he could not come up with anything. This worries me. The thing is it is nice you guys are talking about this right now because it is exactly what is going on in our house this very day! Any and all suggestions would be welcome. Sorry for the long post. :)
My 3rd grader still believes as do all of her friends - sm
and I do not shelter my kids. They go to school, attend brownies, and dance. I hope she still believes next year, as well as my younger daughter (now 6). It is all part of the magic of Christmas and the mystic quality of all of it. Santa is a wonderful idea and ideal, promotes the joy of giving, whether it be a gift, or your time to helping others in need. I don't remember when I stopped believing, somewhere in the 8-9 year-old range but I had 2 older brothers but I believe my mom had them keep their mouths shut so I could believe as long as was able. I was a year younger than most the kids in my class too. ---to those who think its wrong to lie about santa, I presume this means your kids never had the joy of the Easter bunny or the tooth fairy as well. I think all that is part of a happy childhood.
Similar situations here with 4th grader
I also would think they would know better at that age, but obviously my child did not. Similar things happened to mine, not DS games as they are not allowed to leave the house, but with other things. We explained to him that it was his mistake and you can't trust everyone, even friends. He has had to deal with it on his own. It took a few tiems and now he has finally learned his lesson. Sometimes they have to learn the hard way I think. Even though I don't like feeling like I lost money but he's the one who lost the game, not me. He has to deal with the consequences.
August 22nd for my 1st grader here in Iowa

not every child in the 3rd grade is going to have the mentality of a 3rd grader. some or ahead
and some arent.  some still believe. there isnt that much difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders...i am talking about an entire classroom of thirty children.  she didnt use the word " exist"...she had children raise their hands as to what parts of the story is false and fiction...i just think she could have found a diff story, didnt have to talk about santa ya know?
Teacher forces 3rd grader to unclog toilet

ST. GABRIEL, La. — Saint Gabriel police have arrested a third-grade schoolteacher and booked her with cruelty to a juvenile.

The parents of a student at East Iberville School filed a complaint against 46-year-old Julie Landry of Plaquemine, accusing her of forcing their son to unclog a restroom toilet with his hands May 7th.

Landry has been placed on leave with pay.

Landry is a first-year teacher, participating in an alternative certification program.

Spring
GOOD THOUGHT.....I can't do cold weather......
I do that in the spring. I usually get a tool
and clip the dead parts back and remove them. It just makes them look all fresh and pretty, and then the dead sticks won't tear up the leaves if you get any wind. I am not certain if it is essential, but it improves the look a lot.
I wait until spring, too sm

I figure the dead leaves and stalks offer a little protection from the cold. The bed where I have the hydrangea stayed iced over for more than a week this past winter, and I thought I had lost the hydrangea. But in the spring I could feel that the branches were still supple and smooth at the bottom so we just cleared out the dead leaves, trimmed off the dead tips, and it came back beautifully. It has blossoms all over it that are getting ready to burst into bloom.

We just moved into this house last summer and I planted the hydrangea in a place where I thought it would have enough shade, but we had a bunch of 100+ degree days I was afraid the heat had killed it....until the cold came along and then I thought the same thing about the cold. But it is definitely "the little hydrangea that could"!!

We are getting chickens this spring. .sm
So I have been doing a lot of reading about eggs and chickens. And yes, I have been very bored lately!
Spring Break
Our Spring Break is the week of the 13th. That's one of the weeks I take off from work so we can do things with the kids. Usually we take our vacation then and go away. Luckily it's usually half way decent here so at least the kids can go out and get some fresh air and play with the other kids in the neighborhood. Does your school district have any type of program for the kids during the break? Here there's a camp that the kids can go to at various locations.

My animals have spring fever
MY 2 cars, one is 13+ and the other is almost 7 are bugging me along with my dog to play, and just pay some attention to them.  It is nice outside and they sure have the spring bug.  Hard to resist them.  Just took the dog for a long run in the park with another neighbor's puppy and though it would calm her down but now, she bring in her stuffed animals and when I ignore her she will throw them at my chair to get my attention.  So I keep taking 5 to 10 minutes to play and now am behind.  Oh well, it only happens a couple of times a year so gotta enjoy it.   But even the 13 year old is sitting on my desk, which she never does, and playing with my papers, pens, knocking things down and then just looking at me, like "Did I do that."   But it is so nice here in Portland today, up to 60 gotta take advantage as will probably rain tomorrow.
I saw my first robin of spring this morning!

I guess spring really is coming, even though we're still under 18" of snow in my neighborhood (yeah, it's shady in here).  I'm about 30 miles north of Albany, NY.  Anybody see a robin farther north?

spring cleaning blinds
I have blinds on my windows that are dusty and yucky.  I'm wondering if anyone has a good way to clean them without taking them down.
if you go to Pismo...go in the spring or fall...
Summer is very very foggy most of the time (I went to college in San Luis Obispo about 15 miles away). Also, if you do go, you MUST go to Del's pizza in Shell Beach for dinner one night. Fairly inexpensive and very good food--not just pizza. In my opinion, it is the best restaraunt in the area.
Talk about some spring cleaning
My house is getting in really good shape. I, like you, also have some medical issues, 1 being fibro. Some days I am so achy I just could cry. Most days my ribs are so sore cannot touch me. Having said that I continue to work because my husband thinks I can do the work IF not working and I just do not care to do it. I do washing and hang that up in the washroom, cleaning person hangs in closet because the poles are really high for this 5Ɗ" person to jump up to. I pay the person myself. My husband does not so what I pay for, work for and really mine to spend as I like.
Spring Break!!! Let's go to the Labrador Islands!!

yep - Spring ahead, Fall back.....

After an absolutely crummy winter/spring...

Here in the beautiful Pacific NW, I mean really cold, below normal temps, snow very late into the season...

We are expecting some 90+ degree days starting tomorrow into the weekend - and I for one am HAPPY!  My poor halter tops haven't seen daylight for so long I forgot what they look like.

Happy Birthday! I'll be there in the spring. nm

The Aggressive Black Shoe for Spring
The description tickled me!
Disney World over spring break! nm

It is spring, traveling in summer out west, my question is
do you think I will see snow STILL there this summer? I am going to the Rockies, Yellowstone and my departure from Denver and ye gads, tomorrow suppose to be snow. Does Mother Nature know it is spring or not?
The mansions are still here, but the Game Farm closed this spring
n
You rock! Thanks.
Good sprinkler for a noodlehead like me.
Rock On! Same here..
after 20 years of carting my kids, their friends, sports equipment, saddles, and of course helping half the planet move -- my youngest just got his license and I got myself a ragtop (2-seater) Saturn Sky. I may be old and pudgy, but I'm having a BLAST and it's all mine, mine, mine! Enjoy
will high gas prices affect your spring/summer travel
j/c.  I wanted to go to the beach this year but I don't think we will now.
PUGS ROCK!!! (nm)

sheet rock
I have seen this painted and I have also seen people do sheet rock mud over it to smooth the lines.  We have paneling that I hate.  Bought MIL's house.  Hubby loves it.  Too dark but in great condition  We are just going to put sheet rock on top and go from there.
under rock I suppose...
sorry, just never heard that one before...pardon moi!
Rock of Love
I just got done watching. I'm so glad Lacey is gone. I really like Jes. Most of the other women that were on the show were just too trampy for me. I have the feeling he's going to pick Heather though. I love all the shows you mentioned. How about I Love NY? She's from here in Syracuse. Feel free to email any time to talk about the shows. The same goes for JMR down below.
Now that is very sweet. Rock on, ma!
:)
Better climb under a rock,
or have all the posts been there for years? Nothing new. Liz Taylor stole Eddie Fisher from his wife, then had affair with Richard Burton (who was married)- hmmm guess they were way past their prime (also dead) to make to DWTS- this happened in the 60s and Ingrid Bergman (in the 40s) had twins with a guy she was not married to (married to someone else.) Like I said, better just go to a remote island and be alone for it not to happen.
Fraggle Rock

I love Fraggle Rock.  We got a couple DVDs for my friend and I got some for myself and made the kids watch it.  :-)

FYI - Rock Band
We were going to trade in 1 guitar for the rock band set and were told the Rock Band still has a lot of kinks to work out and the sales person advised us to wait until after this Christmas as it will probably be the big thing for Christmas and the problems will be worked out.

I would love to get the 80's one too! I didn't know they had that! My husband was a DJ in highschool and I bet he would love that. Ok, that's now on his xmas list. lol Thanks!
I must live under a rock...
as I did not know that either! Not that there's anything wrong with that
Anyone else going to Cancun for Spring Break and concerned about current safety concerns
We're all set to go to Cancun for Spring Break and then we hear all of this on the news about people being careful in Mexico because of the drug cartel activities and killings etc. Does this even involve Cancun or is it just the border places. The Spring Breakers are being warned about going so it makes me wonder if it is just the borders as most Spring Breakers do not go to the border towns. Does anyone have anymore information. I have a good friend who met her husband in Mexico, has crossed the borders etc and she said going to Mexico isnt worth risking your life because they hate Americans. Yikes.. I don't know whether to go or not or if I'm just being paranoid now.
What rock do you find these kind of men under?...

You are not respected in your marriage. Tell him to go by himself, save his own money and take your kids somewhere YOU want to go while he is gone. Please don't say that other than this he is a wonderful father, good provider, yada,yada...he has no respect for you or your opinion, which cancels out any good attributes, IMHO of course....

Between a rock and a hard place - HELP!

Okay, back towards the end of last school year some mothers decided to have a coo at the elementary school and take over the PTO for this coming year from the ones that had been running it.  Shortly after that, the now ex-pres moved in next to us.  The neighbor across the street is now on the "new" PTO.  Somehow, they didn't elect a president for the coming year though and they came knocking on my door "oh you'll be great, we'll do all the work, we just need you to run the meetings, etc".  Well, I let the principal know that I would and now am regretting it.  I have a full-time job plus type part-time at night (switching to just weekends when school starts).  My husband is gone during the week so that leaves me to take care of kids, homework, games and practices, etc.  I get calls and emails all day long regarding PTO.  I thought about just sticking it out for the school year (I do have the flexibility to be off or leave early, come in late from my full time job) because I really want to be more involved in the school since my child is going into the second grade.  Well, the final straw was a few nights ago when a bunch of us parents were sitting in our driveways watching the kids playing.  It wasn't until after the ex-pres comes outside (she hasn't talked to any of us since all that happened), that the neighbor across the street starts talking PTO stuff at a level that the ex-pres can hear (I never replied to her about anything).  My husband went ballistic!  We came in the house and he said that was uncalled for, we need to move, and that he's very upset about me taking on the role of president.  SO, what do I do now?  How do I gracefully back out but not get shunned from being up at the school and helping out with some activities?

The other story with that neighbor across the street that has bugged me this week - everything my child gets (we are not frivilous by any means), she makes sure her kids get the same things, even down to the exact same pair and color or tennis shoes for school, clothes, bicycles and now, the yard ornaments that we have had in our yard, i see she has bought some and are now in her yard also.  I cringe now when I see her but I hate to keep my child from playing in the front yard just because her kids are out there (same age).  Any ideas on this too???

What a crappy week!!!

I need room under the rock, I didn't know either.

Navy Seals ROCK! sm

I am not surprised they were able to accomplish the rescue.  Have you seen those shows where they detail what exactly the training they go through entails and you watch people actually going through the training?  It is brutal.  Those guys who make it to the end are the cream of the crop.  Once again our military comes through!  I am so happy about the good outcome!

Reality show fan too! What do you think of Rock of Love?
LOL! And I Love New York from Flavor of Love! Surreal Life. lol. These are the best entertainment these days if you ask me. And there are so many I can't even remember all of them.

Also love Top Chef, America's Top Model, American Idol, etc., and that hair show called Shear Genius with Jacklyn Smith. Hope that comes back.

I had to get something similar to TIVO so I could record all of my shows!!!!
