Pitbulls...sm

Further down this page, I saw a post that asked about people's favorite breed of dog.  I saw various posts with people's preferences.  Then I saw one that said "anything but a pitbull."  That really upsets me because you see I am the owner of a pitbull.  His name is CJ and he is the most affectionate, caring dog you could ever want.  He loves me and my family with everything in him.  I know before I got a pitbull and before my friend got one I too believed they were dangerous fighting dogs.  I was wrong.  Not all pits are used for fighting.  And it isn't in all pits to fight.  The way they are raised has a big part in it.  Those pits who fight are trained to fight.  Yes some pits are aggressive.  But not the majority.  You would be surprised to see how loving they can be.  Mine stays inside and he thinks he is a 70 pound lap dog.  He is such a big baby.  That is not to say he isn't protective.  If a stranger comes up he will show aggression and get very ugly.  BUT that is because he is scared and doesn't know this person's intentions.  He is protecting his family.  But once I let him know it is okay and we are okay with this person he will listen and go sit.  Once he gets to know someone he just wants to lick them and love on them.  He is just protective initially.  A lot of people don't know that pitbulls serve as therapy and service dogs.  Did you know Helen Kellar had a pitbull as her companion and to help her as she was blind.  Yes, look on the internet and you will even see a picture.  What about Petey the pit on the TV show "The Little Rascals"?  He spent countless hours with children everyday and never hurt anyone.  Do you think they would have let a dangerous dog do that?  Many celebrities such as the late crocodile hunter, Usher, Alicia Silverstone, Sinbad, Linda Blair, Vin Diesal, Bernadette Peters, and Rachal Ray have pitbulls.  What about the many pits who are heroes?  America's first war dog was a pitbull named Stubby.  He earned several medals during World War I and was even honored at the white house.  Weela another pit was dog hero of the Ken-L Ration of 1993.  She saved 30 people, 29 dogs, 13 horses, and a cat during a flood in South California.  And Bogart another pit saved a 4-year-old child from drowning in a swimming pool in Florida.  Dixie was inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame after she saved some children from a cottonmouth snake.  So you see not all pits are vicious and dangerous.  Many are heroes.  Many are so full of love it will touch your heart.  So don't judge these wonderful animals for WHAT they are but WHO they are.  There are bad people and there are bad dogs.  Not all people are bad and not all dogs are bad.  Show some love for these dogs.  You would be surprised how much love they will show you back.

I just felt the need to let people know what I came to know about one of the most misunderstood breeds out there.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and have an open mind and open heart.

Pitbulls
The reason pitbulls are used for fighting more than other dogs is because of their loyalty. Pitbulls, in the effort to please their owners, will do almost anything INCLUDING killing other dogs. These pitbulls are not aggressive or hateful by nature. They are just doing what they are taught to do.

Most of them that are taught to do so need rehabilitation, not death. They can be retrained just like criminals can be reintroduced to society. There are extreme cases, but there are people qualified out there to retrain even those.

I appreciate this post. While I have never personally owned my own pitbull (my husband brought a lab to the marriage and I already had to little scampers so three is enough for now!) my parents have about ten that they have rescued and rehabilitated and they are amazing, sweet, loving dogs!

All I can say is AMEN! Ya know when are people going to get it that it is all in how you raise them.... I guess never. Guess this is a battle that we will always be up against & we are very willing to take that challenge cuz we know the breed & we know how wonderful they are. I am and always will be a pitbull owner!!!! :)

Do you think the dog was crying out for attention? I have had many dogs in my life & the ones that I find are the ones that are more likely to turn are mixed breeds. I had a Samoyed mix breed that was raised from a puppy & was great till he reached a year and a half old & he started trying to bite us. We kept him and tried our hardest to change him, but no matter what he would at any given time out of the blue growl at us and try to bite us. So believe me it isn't just a breed issue.
Pitbulls
I do believe that very seldom sometimes you may run across a dog that gives you a problem, but you have to remember dogs are alot like people, and that there are by far alot less mean dogs than there are mean people that's for sure. I don't blame you for your bitterness toward the breed at all considering what you went through. I am curious did you know the background where she came from? How was the mother/father? Was this a reputable breeder? purebred? We have owned Samoyed, Chow Chow, Boxer, Pits, Black Mouth Cur, Laborador Retriever, and German Shepherd along with mixed breeds. Our experience is definitely the opposite of yours we had problems out of mixed breeds & not the pure bred. Having said that I know that every mixed breed isn't going to be trouble because just as people are different individuals so are dogs.

Hey SO glad to hear that! I tuned in to the Rachael Ray show also & she definitely loves the breed! I admit I was a skeptic at first cuz u hear so much, but after taking a chance & owning one & doing my research I LOVE pitbulls. My male pits don't hardly shed but now my female shed like I don't know what. I told the vet & he gave me a multivitamin to give her & that fixed that:) If you ever think about owning one I'd definitely do my homework & research the breeder & see the mom/dad's personalities. Also you could check in a reputable pitbull shelter & tell them your lifestyle and what you like & have them make a recommendation as to what dog would fit you. Older pitbulls from a shelter already have developed their lil personalities & the good shelters work with them day in and day out and know their likes & dislikes. I really like the Villalobos shelter & I think they are doing an outstanding job!
pitbulls
Lolabug is using phrases that some owners use to defend the breed simply because she obviously isn't narrow minded into thinking it is just a "breed issue". One thing about the pitbull breed that isn't in any other breed is that they are the #1 most abused dog in the U.S. and they are in serious need of good homes, and that is why I own them and will continue to own them. Instead of passing BSL around, they need to make people take dog ownership classes and get certified to help ensure they know how to take care of the dog, and frankly they ought to do this with all dogs and not just for pitbull owners. You can't let dogs raise themselves. Just like children need guidance and discipline so do dogs.
No pitbulls at all
When I said mainly on leashes, that means either on leashes, behind actual fences or behind electronic fences. I'm not sure where you think I live, but it's a small town in Upstate NY. Just because it's not hoity toity section with an association telling everyone what they can and can't have in and around their homes, it doesn't mean it's a slum. I'm sure that goes for almost everyone else who's posted that doesn't happen to live in an HOA.
Pitbulls personality
I totally sympathize with you. Sorry for you having to go through this. I really try to urge people when they get a pitbull to really get to know the mom/dad personalities & the breeder. Like I said in an earlier post my male pitbull that is inside is VERY dog aggressive BUT on the flip side he is the most gentle loving dog I have ever owned. He just doesn't like other animals, ESPECIALLY dogs. We have a fenced in yard though. If he come in contact with an unfamiliar dog he would definitely be in kill mode with his aggression. BUT I knew what I was getting myself into cuz he is Boudreaux bloodline & his mother was aggressive. His father was an absolute sweetheart to anything. I knew that aggression would probably surface up in my dog & it did at a year and a half old, but I wouldn't ever trade him up for anything in this world. He wouldn't dare turn on us, and I know that animal or dog aggression is not people aggression. I do have a great respect for what could happen if I let it happen, but I am responsible enough to know what my dogs like & don't like & I never have a problem out of them. They are definitely a vital part of our family & we love them dearly.
Insurance and pitbulls
Yea insurance companies have a "black breed list" that usually include Pitbulls, German Shepherds, Boxers & Chow Chows. Some pitbulls have that aggressive nature in them that can be brought out, but you have to trace back to the breeder & get the history of that dog's mom/dad's temperment.
Education on Pitbulls
Know the FACTS: visit http://www.thetruthaboutpitbulls.com/
According to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association 82.5% of the American Pitbull Terriers that took the temperament test passed, compared to a 77% passing rate for all breeds on average. Pitbulls have achieved the fourth highest passing rate of all 122 breeds tested.

OK, I must admit your dog is cute, but I'm still afraid of pitbulls.

breed? come on

What breed?
Ears can be a source of odor. They need to be dried thoroughly after a bath with a drying ear solution. Floppy ears can have more problems than prick ears since they hold moisture.

Dogs with facial folds get food caught in there. These have to be wiped out daily with a moist cloth. Oily coated breeds have more odor than others. Labs and some other water retrieving breeds have the oily coats. Teeth can cause odors. If using a doggy enzyme toothpaste once a week doesn't improve it, probably time for a dental cleaning. This is expensive because the vet needs to do labs before giving anesthesia, and the labs nearly double the cost in older animals because they check more levels (going from memory). The most surprising odor causer to me was my CJ seemed to have odor from stomach acid reflux. Daily Pepcid AC fixed it.
A food with corn can cause stinky feet ("Frito-feet").

Did you remember to wash his dog bed or blankets or Febreze his favorite chair? Odors could be transferring back to him. One loose dog I brought home from the park one time was stinky, so I bathed him before taking him to the SPCA. After he was dry I picked up his collar and it was horribly stinky. Yuck!

Just some possibilities.

?what breed of dog? some
breeds are known for hearing sensitivity (border collies and healers). does your dog seem to be bothered by sirens or train horns? you could try cotton balls in their ears, maybe. just a thought.
It is not the breed.
Yes, Bostons do have a lot of energy, but just like any breed, they can be properly trained. I have a Boston and she is the best little dog. She does like to jump around a lot and loves affection, but all I have to do is tell her to sit and she will. If I tell her to, she will even stay in that spot until I tell her she can get up.

If they didn't even know if their dog was in heat or not, they don't sound like the greatest pet owners, and my bet is that these dogs have never had an ounce of proper training.

Don't blame the breed. They can be great dogs. I would definitely get another one in the future.

Very true. Even if you like a certain breed, as I do (sm)
with my "Persian-habit", there are specific breed rescues out there for just about any breed you can imagine. I've adopted all my Persians as adult cats (who are often overlooked) from a local Persian rescue. Fancy bloodlines do not protect a cat from abuse, and sometimes I think it adds to the problem. Many of this rescues kitties come from kitten-mills that produce 'way too many kittens. Some grow up in squalid conditions (as my former Persian did... his breeder went to jail, and he was confiscated and sent to a rescue.) Sometimes even beautiful show-cats who have won in competition will end up dumped in the pound if they cannot be sold as pets afterward (again the problem with being an adult cat), or are no longer able to breed. How sad that a kitty can win a championship in the show ring, which certainly isn't any fun for them, with all the caging, baths and grooming, etc.)only to be dumped when the owner has no more use for them. My present kitty was purchased as a kitten by someone for (gasp- $3500 !! - oy VAY!)... and a year later she took her to a vet to be destroyed because she had a litter-box aversion problem. Can you believe that? Just thru chance, that vet had a client who worked for a rescue, and she came and saved the kitty, which is how I ended up with her. Granted, she was exasperating at first, as she would ONLY pee & poo on the FLOOR, not the litter box. But with lots of TLC, some time, (and crate-training like a dog), she is now a happy user of TWO litter boxes. (One for the pee, and one for the poo! haha).

You're right about the good dog vs bad dog & breeding comment, too. Look at pit bulls.... some of the nicest dogs I ever knew have been pits, but the type of person who usually is drawn to this breed often knows zip about socializing dogs, or else wants them as watchdogs, and of course, you read about what happens when things go wrong with these dogs every day. Where I live you now have to post a pretty hefty bond in order to be able to keep one within city limits, so of course in the poorer sections of town, that forces people to give them up. The pounds are OVERFLOWING with pits because they are now considered such a liability to own.

Too bad people don't have to attend some sort of a class, and pass a test, before being allowed to own an animal of ANY kind! And unless one has a license as a LEGIITIMATE breeder, I think spaying & neutering of ALL other pets should be mandatory.
I wish they would let the breed just phase out
that being the pit bull. There was an unprovoked attack on a man in our city a few weeks ago but 3 pits. He said glad not a child- could not have survived. He wound up in the hospital. I do not like them being put down per se, just wish each spayed and/or neutured and that would take care of everything. Too vicious to be around me, even the so called "sweet" ones.
Do any of you breed dogs?

My husband and I are debating this so I want the "real scoop"?  How much money do you make after you consider shots, care, etc.  How much work is it.  How much space do you need.  I want to know everything!

Maybe, but then you'll also breed mosquitoes.
We can't win!
They are so adorable! I love this breed so much, but I SM
know people who have one and she ran across the yard and got the neighbor by the foot after he got out of his car to go into his house!  They are feisty little dogs and cute as a button. I still love them. I used to live next door to a Chihuahua who would not let me out of my car, and when I got out it bit my foot. Our Chi is afraid of her own shadow and very sweet. The most she does at strangers is bark!  Just like people, I guess . . .  each one is different.
Ugh, I knew I butchered the breed name!
Kim, please accept my apologies for that.  My internet is saying connected for mere minutes at a time and I wanted to get her picture up as quickly as I could and with speed sometimes comes mistakes.  Forgive me!
Should we destroy a whole breed based ...sm
on what a few do wrong? Look at the Dalmation attacks, Alaskan Malamutes, Pomeranians, etc. Should we destroy these breeds too?

Senator Kennedy did not breed him -
Senator Kennedy's breeder of his two dogs bred him and when he could not stay with his original home, Senator Kennedy first took him in and then gave him to the girls.
I adore that breed, too. I was talking to breeders SM
at a dog show about them. I think they are just beautiful!
What an adorable breed picture. They will give you all s/m
the love you handle and then some. I wish every animal in the world was treated so beautifully. Good love this little angel's heart.
Lucky, you! I am sorry I got the spelling of this gorgeous breed SM

wrong. I study dog breeds, know every one in the dog shows, etc. and then made that fo-pa.  Not intentional, I assure you.  They had the Pembroke and Cardigan. You would have loved it.

Yes. You must make a point to see this next year. It is so adorable and a change of pace for those of us who don't watch the football game. They have them on what looks like a football field with lots of toys and they are all running around, and they play a sound track in the bakground that sounds like fans cherring in the crowd!

Years ago had a mixed breed (1/2 pit) and he was allergic to the carpet! sm
We tried everything and finally had to put in outside. My husband built this beautiful kennel for him. He actually thrived outside! I missed having him to snuggle with, but seeing how his health improved outside it was the best for him.
Because you breed out of wedlock then that makes you a responsible person?
Sorry, not where I come from. I am so glad I did not bring home (well years ago it just WAS NOT done) children. If a female got pregnant, sent away to an unwed mother home, most of the time the child given up for adoption. When I was growing up you did not pop out babies right and left without a husband. I have had more than my share of responsibility, been able to stand on my own 2 feet and provide really well for my family. I made the right decision for me and do not regret and have never looked back on my decisions.
Good for you! This one looks a little like the breed of dog, Brussels Griffon in the face!!! NM
xx
My son had this happen to him, as well--sm
and he did report it to the bank. however, he only got half of his money back (I don't know why) even though the woman who stole his cc# was caught. I had the same bank as he did and apparently they told him they would only reimburse half of the charges. To this day, he will not buy items on line.
me too but I don't think that's going to happen...sm

GOP-democratic ongoing battle will make it political, but if WE can resist all that.....it would be good.

Just as an aside, us older MTs...are really going to be the largest senior group ever.......in the USA - something like 70+ million - and we, politically, are a HUGE voice (in numbers)....so I still believe WE CAN change the world.......that we CAN make the difference.

just as I believed 40 years ago too.......

perhaps I'm deluded.....*winks*

sure hope not......

p.s.  please don't burst my bubble....

Did this happen already?
I'm watching CNN and they haven't mentioned it. They just have a message up saying that Judge to decide if Paris Hilton goes back to jail. She isn't even at the courthouse yet. The Sheriff are picking her up at her house. I definitely think she needs to go back to jail no question about it.
Happen to be in
or is this something happening all over Indiana, thanks to our MITCH????
He does not ALLOW it to happen...
We are humans, with minds of our own, allowed to make choices. We're not puppets on a string being guided around. Come on now, you can't be that unschooled in the Bible. It's unfortunate that bad things and abuse and so forth happens in this world, but it does...and it's because there are so many nonbelievers and so much evil...God wants us to come to Him. He's not going to force Himself on anyone.
Having same happen to me
Gosh I love these fuzzies but shocked every time I pet them, etc. but that is just the tip of the iceberg- getting shocked from clothing, coats, blankets, etc. etc. Does anyone have a good idea how to stop some of this- and no, I will not get rid of the fuzzies.
You could have this happen to you sm

where you disconnected from someone because of something petty (shower) and then when you really had time to look back on it and put it into perspective, along with putting yourself in her situation, you realize that you miss your friend and try to reconnect.

When you do, you find out she actually died a year before.  Think about that before you make a decision to end the friendship.  I wish I had.

I can see how it could happen
Years ago, I went for an upper GI. The tech came in right before the test to ask if I had done the bowel prep. They were preparing to do a barium enema instead of an upper GI. It was a good thing I was in the medical field and knew exactly what test I was having and why.
I agree that it must happen a lot..sm

A few years back I had an ink cartridge that I wanted to return because I had grabbed the wrong one.  The Walmart wouldn't take it back.  For that store anyways, it was their policy not to accept ink cartridges in return for that very reason.  They told me that I wouldn't even believe how many they get back and are actually empty.  I was told that I needed to send it back to the company for whatever brand it was.

I believed what they said because at that time my husband was a manager there.

When they do inventory it takes them like a month to do it, and you wouldn't believe sometimes how much money and merchandise is unaccounted for, not just easily concealable things either.   No way to know how much of it was really stolen, but I would bet a good portion of it.

I'm sure they'll take back your cartridge.  If you can't find your receipt, they will probably just give you a gift card figuring that if by chance you didn't get that cartridge there, at least they know you have to spend that gift card at a Walmart.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll tell you exactly what will happen.
If you don't buy it, everything will break. If you buy it, everything will break right after it runs out. lol. I bought a blazer a couple years ago, bought an extended warrantly and literally a month after it ran out my fuel pump burned up, some motor for my blinker burned out, had to get a new alternator, new battery, new tires (due to neighborhood felon in the making), driver side viser broke...I think there was more but I can't remember at the moment.

Anyhoo, good luck! :-)
i expected this probably would happen, but not yet.
I feel for her baby growing up without her mom and for her mother, who i'm sure always had hope that "vicki lynn" would come out of this downward spiral before it was too late. It's tragic all the way around. I would love to know if mr. lawyer is really innocent of all this too.
did these happen at once or different times? nm

I can only imagine what would happen
to all the animals that would not be adopted because the owners could not afford health insurance. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats, all adopted from shelters. We don't have insurance on them but isn't them living in a loving home a better alternqative then what might have happened to them?
Gee. I knew that would happen! LOL!

Know things happen but.....
I can relate to what you say; however when my own father asked me to move in with him (close to age 90) I refused to do that. I visited, had seen him growing up (parents divorced) but I would never ruin my life moving in with him as life would have been hel* for me, overbearing, rude, constantly belittled me in front of others (weight issue he had with me) and generally not the kind of person I would care to live with. However, this is what I did and he could take or leave it. He lived close by in another state and I told him I would get any assistance he could use be it Meals on Wheels, rides to and from appointments, just anything. It was up to him if he wanted or not. I did not care norr do I care now what anyone would think about this situation. My maternal aunt (who knew my father very, very well) said he had lived his life, now I should live mine. I am not throwing away my happiness to satisfy someone else. Now, if he had been a kind, understanding, loving father he could have possibly (and that is not a sure thing) moved in with ME but definitely not giving up my home, etc. to have lived with him.
What's the worst that can happen; you buy a new one?
I have heard people clean them by running them under the shower and letting them dry in the warm outside air. I'm going to try it, I have a backup cheapie to use if it gets ruined and I have to buy a new one.
Would you happen to be a male
Because any female knows how hard it is to go to school while having your period, especially having your FIRST period. And the thought of her using a tampon at that age I am sure freaks the poor child out. My DD is 17 and she still doesn't use tampons. I never used them until I had my 3rd child, over the age of 30. Only a male (I hope) would make such an uneducated response...more power to ya Mom, stick up for your DD 100%... the teacher was absolutely wrong in the way this situation was handled and should be confronted about it...good luck!
Yes, my mother had this happen. sm
I think she was in her 40s, can't remember exactly. She said it was the worst headache and vomiting ever. Her's also was a small bleed, such a small aneurysm that when it burst that was the end of the aneurysm. She recovered fully and if I remember right she was only in the hospital for a week or so.
A lot of assuming going on here. Did it happen or
x
