Never will be another Motown sound
or anything close to it. Gosh there was no one who wasn’t the best there, was there? Kids off the street (as in Idol) getting the chance of their lifetime and giving us all that wonderful music. I can sing along with so many of the songs from back them. Such fond memories.
Catchy newsletter title.
Need some suggestions for a "catchy" newletter title.  Am a home MT who works for a local hospital and we are starting up a newsletter for the MT.  Thanks for your suggestions.
It was a Four Tops song.....love Motown..
xx
I wish that story was unique but it's not
The instances of DHS screwing up are unreal. We knew a family who someone (apparently out of spite) called DHS and reported abuse. They had several children who were taken out of their home and they had to fight for months to prove their innocence. Unfortunately, with DHS you're not innocent until proven guilty, but guilty until you manage to prove your innocence.

In the end, all the kids were traumatized by the whole episode. Pitiful, really.

Well, it's quite unique and very hard to describe, - sm
but I'll try. It happens out in the middle of nowhere in the Nevada high desert, northeast of a town called Gerlach. For one week a year, what is normally a totally devoid-of-all life, ancient lake bed ('playa') is turned into a temporary city known as 'Black Rock City'.

It is basically a festival of art and free expression. A community is born where no money is used - all transactions (other than ice and coffee) are either trades or gifts. People build totally amazing art pieces, building, vehicles, etc. out on the desert floor. It's a photographer's dream come true, but one rule is that no photos taken can be sold for profit. Clothing is anything from amazingly elaborate to nonexistent, but the imporant thing is outlandishness. 'Playa fashion' tends to include lots of fuzzy fake-fur leggings, goggles (for dust-storms, among other things), tutus, stilts, face and/or body paint, frilly, brightly-colored square-dance petticoats worn as outerwear, etc. etc.

There are many themed 'camps' throughout the playa community. The more bizarre, the better. There are things like Giant Chess Camp, Neon Camp, you name it and there's a camp for it. My friends will construct the 'Black Rock Roller Disco', which has become such a favorite that it's located in the center of the city in 'Center Camp'. They bring rental skates and put down a wooden outdoor roller rink, and you can boogie to the disco beat for 24 hours a day.

As the 'city' is a couple miles across, bikes are a MUST for transportation around 'town'. Everyone brings their worst bikes, as the fine, slightly alkaline dust out there gets into everything, and is not good for expensive bikes. People tend to decorate the bikes as outlandishly as they do themselves. Many seem to have dolls, stuffed animals, horse or unicorn heads attached to the front. (I was at a yard sale last weekend and saw a rather unique 'Mermaid' doll that would've been PERFECT for use as a 'maidenhead' on the front of a bike!)

Motorized vehicles aren't allowed to drive through 'town', unless they are 'Art Cars' that have been registered through the Black Rock City DMV ('Department of Mutant Vehicles'). Decorated Art-Cars roll slowly across the desert - many are as big as ships (or even ARE ships), and have many people riding them. My favorite (seen in videos & photos of B.M.) was a humongous dragon-car that actually had 40-foot flames coming out of its mouth!

Fire is a BIG part of Burning Man. Many of the art projects involve fire. (One of many reasons why the festival is held out in the desert, and not in a forest!) One of my favorites at a Burning Man party in S.F. a couple years ago was an ORGAN that when the keyboard was played, the notes were produced by FIRE roaring up through a multitude of different-length pipes fed by propane. Other art sculptures move when the fire is turned on. So obviously the whole thing is quite a spectacle at night!

'Burning Man' gets its name from the end of the festival. At the beginning, huge wooden man-like sculpture is built. It's the symbol of the festival, and on the last night, it's set on fire and burned.

This festival originated on Baker Beach in San Francisco (haha...where else?), and after a few years grew too big for that small beach, so was moved to Nevada.

The best way to see the amazing photos and read more about what it's like is to go to their website (burningman.com). Look in the Photo Gallery to be amazed at some of the incredible photography. (Also a great place to go in order to get unique ideas for Halloween costumes!) The site is quite addicting!

If I were more of a camping-person, and if I felt I could spend a week there without going into total sensory overload, I'd be there in a heartbeat. But, maybe someday when I'm a little older and hopefully a lot more mellow......
To say that Adam's was unique is a mouthful!
I thought he sounded like a little girly guy. Now don’t get me wrong, maybe that is what he wants but heck no I thought the song was horrific. Ugh!
Every child is unique, and you will find your stride.

Homeschooling rocks.  Good for you thinking out of the box.  At first you will wonder if you are doing the right thing, if the curriculum is right, if you know what the heck you are doing, if you're trained properly, and the biggie--what will others say about the S word (socialization), etc.  Just go with the flow, know you won't be perfect, but you are able to tailor what you teach to your daughter unlike in school.  If she benefits from the small class size in private school, you know that she will benefit from the one-on-one teaching and learning relationship with you.

I have no experience in schooling special needs kids, so I'm sorry that I cannot offer assistance.  Hopefully you have lots of support in your town.  We have a Home School Assistance Program headed by 2 licensed teachers who are homeschoolers, and they have been quite invaluable to me.  They head up lots of opportunities for the big S word.  If you don't have that support, it's okay.  You will do fine.  Have confidence in yourself, because you care the most about your child's education.

My favorite site is time4learning.com if you are looking for something secular and fairly comprehensive.  It can be used for supplement or as a core curriculum.  My daughter does not like learning on the computer so much (she's 6), so we use textbooks and workbooks instead.  We are library hounds as well.

Homeschooling does not take 8 hours a day, either.  We don't line our kids up to go to the bathroom.

yep - your tune shall change down the road..LOL

That Lady Lumps tune...

was the cell phone ringer tone on Michael's cell phone in "The Office" show there.  Darned near slayed me the first time I heard it!  Now that you put it in my head, there it will be for a good 48 hours or so...thanks for that.

I'm sure I'd be singing a different tune if I was in Ohio! :-D
But it's neat to see it here!
How funny! BTW, skunko, how did you get your unique name??? inquiring minds want to know!!......nm

Anyone have any good/unique baby shower games?
My oldest daughter is having a baby at the end of June and I am throwing a baby shower. I would like to do a couple of simple games. Any ideas???? Thanks in advance.
The latest on this looney-tune story
Her family has asked that the public not judge her. I heard this morning she was a mother first and foremost. She has 3 children but like I have stated many times before, you NEVER know what a person might do. Being first and foremost did not stop this person for being charged with attempted murder. My hubby also stated if you had to wear a diaper as an adult, surely you would not want millions to know about it. I feel sorry for her family.
Cool! He sounds like a radio trying to tune in
s
Dang it! I can't get the X-files tune out of my head now!! (nm)

Well, with his current predicament, I'm not surprised
Is he careless or just stoopid? lol
Current hairstyles..to RetroMT
I don't think it will be an easy task to find any beauticians like we had in the old days. I am really exasperated in my "do" I have been attempting to grow from very short style with the aid of a very expensive guy who states the style is coming along nicely. This is third time I have went to him and he says the style he is trying to do is "coming along" nicely. It looks nice one day, then the rest of the days, I am back to wearing one of my hats and/or wigs. I don't think I will continue much longer, too expensive just for what??

But I do know what style you are talking about, hope you can find someone that thinks that way. I don't recall if I had many of those
sets"
My current husband is just the opposite...
In the 8 years we have been married he has paid over $97,000 in child support for his 2 children. His youngest daughter is getting married (and will be giving up the rest of her child support) and the child support will finally end. There are dads and moms out there who do pay their support. I hope you all get the back money owed to you. My ex owes my 2 daughters between 20-25 thousand. I never counted on it in the first place and when it sporadically came in I was happy, kind of like a bonus every now and then.
current and past choices

Current:  NCIS, Mad Men, Damages
Past:  West Wing, Will & Grace, M*A*S*H, Shark, Golden Girls

so with the current state of the economy
Banks aren't safe anymore...I think i would buy up lots of $100,000 homes and rent them out...since the forclosure rate is so high more people wil be renting.  Then when the economy turns back around I can sell my property.  Better than putting money in the bank!
okay, curious here -- what's the current temp outside

that's about it for the week!!

Thank you for a voice of reason
I think there are more than one or two of us in this predictament. Making the changes I'm trying to make right now is actually exacerbating the anxiety, but I know it's my only way out and in the long-run will alleviate the anxiety. My body and mind have been screaming at me for a year now, I can't live on Xanax to keep this job, I'm getting less and less effective and more apathetic. My spouse is supportive and has recently put his foot down on "no dinners at the computer" and "no vacations where I look at you hunched over a computer," and "tell them to take their vacation policy and stick it where the sun doesn't shine." I think I needed that nudge and am glad for the support, though I still feel someewhat guilty when I don't push myself to the limit.

Quietmoods, you're not alone.

Everyone has a right to voice their opinion - (sm)
No need for you to debate - just state your opinion and move on.
Anyone who never has to raise their voice to get (sm)
I have an 8 year old an almost 11 year old and my husband is gone a lot.  They are basically good children, never get in trouble at school except occasionally for talking, don't really do anything malicious or mean.  But sometimes the bicker incessantly with each other and many times I feel as if I have to tell them repeatedly to do something and finally have to get a mad voice before they listen -then their feelings are hurt because I raised my voice.  Right now my son is crying because I told him he has to help clean the house before he can have friends over this morning (he is almost 11).  On school days they don't want to help because they have been at school all day. On weekends they don't want to help because those are their only days off. I am making them help even though they don't want to, but why the tears? It makes me feel like a mean mom, but I can't do it all myself and don't feel I should have to.
IMO a current PDR (Physicians Desk Reference), which runs about $200.00 (sm)
but WELL worth the expense.
Here is a great site that lists all current deals on CCs......
Use the drop down menu to search the different features. I have used it to find balance transfer deals, etc.
It just shows the current moral climate of our country...
you can advertise a site offeriing help to have an extramarital affairs but don't try to push anythig that has anything to do with morals or values such as church, God, taking personal responsibility, etc. Very troubling times indeed.
I think Blake has great voice and
a very unique style all his own.  He deserves to still be in the competition.
Oh, the voice of Darth Vader!
I've definitely been spending way too much time on the Medquist board!  Thank you everyone who reminded me about James Earl Jones and the finer things in life.  Isn't it amazing that he has a problem with stuttering but has managed to develop such a beautiful voice?  See what some of our docs could do if they tried?  When I'm done working for the day, I think I'll listen to his narration of Aaron Copeland's A Lincoln Portrait.  Beautiful music, gorgeous voice.
A truly magnificent voice and talent. nm

I CAN have my opinion and give voice to such.

Thank goodness, another voice of reason!
My husband did not "cop out", he provided more than enought support, insurance, braces, etc. The deadbeat mother who didn't want to work is to blame here, she taught her daughters to take men for all their worth and then move on; nice role model. As long as she got the child support and played the "victim" she was happy as could be, yet still dumped her children off on other's to raise without notifying the father. Yes, he did go back to court, but guess what, when kids are in their teens they are allowed to decide where they want to live and dad was not one of their options. Too bad because had they have given him one ounce of respect and kindness there is nothing he would not do for them. Now that the well has run dry for them support wise we don't hear from them. Grow up, accept responsibility and get a job to help pay for school; millions do it and have survived!
Just say "Dave ain't here, man" in your best stoner voice... nm

Unfortunately, if you don't change your eating habits, you will just maintain your current weight
To see real results, you are going to need to change your diet. You need protein, fiber, and good carbohydrates for energy. What you need to stay away from are the saturated fats, trans fats, and high-calorie/high-fat foods. Always be sure to eat a full breakfast since that will boost your metabolism and keep you from overeating the rest of the day. Also be sure to stop eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Once you have been exercising for a while, your body will get used to it, and you will need to pick up the pace and start doing more than just treadmill workouts and giving your body more challenges. Hope this helps.
Finally - a voice of reason in the wilderness!
and please, OP - GET OVER IT - he WAS just being nice!
Rachel Ray also drives me nuts with her voice.
I like the woman who does Barefoot Contessa, calm and relaxed with a soothing way about her.
Gene Simmons' son. He has the MOST awewome voice.

that's not surprising; he has an awesome sounding voice

I thought Adam's voice was SO annoying.

Electrical current through foot, the other hangs in walking midway through a step, anyone else?

have this problem? I have been to numerous physicians, have been told neuropathy. I am walking so gingerly this morning around the home because know if I step flat on 1 foot (left) it will have the electrical current as happened earlier this morning. Always when walking, never with lying, sitting, etc. You never know when it will happen. The other foot (pedal foot, right) will hang in mid air sometimes when I am taking a step which makes me hop so I will not fall. Gosh, I would love to look forward to my vacation this summer but sometimes the feet ok and then other times not so good. I know the electrical current is probably nerve related but have been told so many nerves in the foot would be like looking for needle in haystack to trace down. I mostly only wear bergies and put them on as soon as I get out of bed. This is not good!!

Anyone else going to Cancun for Spring Break and concerned about current safety concerns
We're all set to go to Cancun for Spring Break and then we hear all of this on the news about people being careful in Mexico because of the drug cartel activities and killings etc. Does this even involve Cancun or is it just the border places. The Spring Breakers are being warned about going so it makes me wonder if it is just the borders as most Spring Breakers do not go to the border towns. Does anyone have anymore information. I have a good friend who met her husband in Mexico, has crossed the borders etc and she said going to Mexico isnt worth risking your life because they hate Americans. Yikes.. I don't know whether to go or not or if I'm just being paranoid now.
no, I have to say that came from Tim O'Leary and his drop acid tune in, turn on and drop out ment

Album: I Love It

(Craig Morgan/Kerry Curt Phillips)

He had plastic bags wrapped 'round his shoes
He was covered with the evening news
Had a pair of old wool socks on his hands

The bank sign was flashing "5 below
It was freezing rain an' spittin' snow
He was curled up behind some garbage cans

I was afraid that he was dead
I gave him a gentle shake
When he opened up his eyes
I said,"Old man are you ok?"

He said,"I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree
I was runnin' from some honey bees
Drip dryin' in the summer breeze
After jumpin' into Calico creek
I was walkin' down an old dirt road
Past a field of hay that had just been mowed
Man I wish you'd just left me alone
'Cause I was almost home..."

Then he said,"I was just comin' round the barn"
'Bout the time you grabbed my arm
When I heard Momma holler son hurry up
I was close enough for my old nose
To smell fresh cobbler on the stove
And I saw daddy loadin' up the truck
Cane poles on the tailgate
Bobbers blowin' in the wind
Since July of ཱི
That's as close as I've been

"Yeah, I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree
I was runin' from some honey bees
Drip dryin' in the summer breeze
After jumpin' into Calico creek
I was walkin' down an old dirt road
Past a field of hay that had just been mowed
Man I wish you'd just left me alone
I was almost home"

I said,"old man you're gonna freeze to death"
Let me drive you to the mission
He said,"Boy if you'd left me alone
Right now I'd be fishin'"

"I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree
I was runnin' from some honey bees
Drip dryin' in the summer breeze
After jumpin' into Calico creek
I was walkin' down an old dirt road
Past a field of hay that had just been mowed
Man I wish you'd just left me alone
'Cause I was almost home"

"Man I wish you'd just left me alone
I was almost home..."

No, Robin...You're the VOICE OF REASON on this topic and
And you're saving me the trouble of posting since you're beating me to it.

Keep posting and keep the reality checks coming, please!!!

I heard the voice yelling out about broken record
and I figured Kara was saying similar statement as she had for previous round. Had no idea Megan's brother. I, like you, could not believe how she was acting and basically think she shot her own self in her foot. What music producer would take a wannabe and try to make a star out of that? Besides do not consider her that talented at all.
Yes, I watched that. She has a beautiful voice. A real joy to listen to!! nm
nm
Basing on talent, I think Taylor Hicks has a phenomenal voice.
t
The voice of Darth Vader was James Earl Jones.
