RE: Post below...Let me assure you this "company"

has no ethics either and has been banned from this board because of it.  They don't treat this account the way they should and quite frankly the client deserves better.

Very wise post. Didnt look at it this way before.

Sorry, 'MT way too long,' my post was not meant for you, it was meant for Wow! Sorry!!...nm
nm
Ah, I really meant to post that under the original post
Though it was gourdpainter's post which inspired me to post that suggestion.

What I meant to post above

From somebody in Houston.

Well...

I feel sorry for these people - they have lost everything - they have nothing. I blame their own government at least a bit for not evacuating the ones that were too poor or had no way to evacuate.

That being said, it isn't going as well here as the media makes it out to be. Anthony has been down the to the Astrodome as required by the Fire Department, and I went down on Saturday with a friend of mine.

The Astrodome holds around 50,000 people - and there aren't that many evacuees down there. There are bathroom facilities, but these people are squatting on the streets, parking lots, and lawns of places down around the astrodome and leaving behind urine and fecal matter. They are throwing trash wherever they are when they finish with it, and quite a few act like we "owe" them something. I can't tell you how many people were bitching about the MRE's that they were being served.

As high as gas prices are, I will go out of my way not to have to drive by the Astrodome (my RE's office is about 1 mile from the dome). When you stop at a stop light they come up to your car and beg - and knock on the windows. There have even been reports of some jumping in the backs of pickups and even scratching cars and trucks with knives, if you don't give them money.

I know that there are some good people out there, but there are a lot of bad ones too. There are some that were appreciative of the baby formula (breastfeeders - please don't jump on me here) and diapers and coloring books that we were handing out - and some that were bitching about the brand of diapers, the fact that we were only authorized to give out one can of formula per child and that we didn't have a certain kind of bottles. I even had people that refused to take gift cards from Grocery Stores - wanting money instead.

Last night, one of the evacuees was able to score some alcohol somewhere, got drunk and carjacked a car and ran into several parked cars - the police were able to pull him over after a 15 minute chase.

And I can't get over the smell of raw sewage in the area of town that most of the evacuees are housed. The plumbing in the toilets are working just fine - but they aren't using it. They are trashing the place.

I can't imagine what it must be like for them, having nothing but the clothes on their backs - but I think I would be more appreciative of whatever someone could do for me, instead of griping about what kind of bottles they were giving me to feed my kids with, and that the MRE's were cold.

I really have mixed emotions about the whole thing. I feel sorry for the people who couldn't leave, and got stuck in the chaos. I don't have as much sympathy for the ones who could have left, but didn't want to.

I am sure I sound like a cold, callous, b****, but I was absolutely amazed at the attitude of most of the evacuees that I was in contact with on Saturday.

I had my post under the wrong one. I meant it for the other one just above yours where sm

they said they are paid on production.  I saw yours and I did understand yours, but somehow I guess while I was reading it, I responded to the other one.

Sorry about that!  I too made much more per hour as an MT even if I made $25 as QA, but I am vehemently opposed to QA being paid per line.

Post was meant to be helpful
so why do you want to turn it into something ugly?

It sounds like you have not had very good luck lately, but by the tone of your post, you sound like a very scary person. Brush-up on your people skills and maybe your luck will get better.

meant SM, there is a message in post above.

That's exactly what I meant - then whole post got crazy

I MEANT the one above you is a good post

They meant in OPs post. We don't know what kind
So people shouldn't assume anything is anti-Christian about the question.
Believe it or not, only now I understood what you really meant in your post,
you meant that she should pose as an Indian, then she would be hired, that's funny!
This is a wise, wise woman! nm
From a thankful gay guy who needed a word of encouragement tonight. God bless!
I wrote the post and I am not offended, I took it how you meant it.
and like I said.... I love warm  milk, drink it almost every night.
The post was meant for Professional MT newbies
We agree and thank you for your comment. It really was not necessary and somewhat unprofessional in my opinion. It certainly does not further the cause of professional MT operators/Entrepenurs.

Someone once said "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions..."
SORRY. meant for MTSO post below. Must be Sunday
My only night off.  Big old brain cramp here!
Enabling post not meant for OP, just Peidmont.

oops meant to post this on MQ board. I really am stressing out. (nm)
nm
Excuse me - I meant to post this on the company board.

I meant it in a good way, and I will not turn this into a huge ugly post.
I am not a "paranoid mass of jelly", for Heaven's sakes! But I have lived thru having neighbor children try to poison my puppies over our fence in similar circumstances - not identical, but similar.  These same kids used to stuff picked flowers in my mailbox, and I never knew how to take it.  I just asked that she be extra cautious. Obviously you ladies have been blessed with not being confronted in life with strange "encounters" like this - I have, and have tried to learn from it. There used to be no more trusting person than myself.  I have learned, though, to be cautious in situations like this - not paranoid, just cautious. Wisdom, some would call it? For what its worth, my sister is a psychiatrist, and she thought the flowers creepy as well, but in a different analytical light - with her mother's and sibling(s) death of late, and her expressing that she wanted the puppy killed, to my sister, she said they could be symbolic of flowers on a grave.  Not paranoid - she's nearly 60 years old and deals with school-aged kids on a daily basis. Her "job", so to speak. Again, probably a 100% innocent gesture, but to those of us who have had encounters with the "children from H*ll", it could be eery.  My post was meant out of genuine concern for Puppy Mom!
I meant to answer your post earlier, but I've been trying to catch up on

housework before school starts.  I cannot WAIT for school to start.  I'm so tired of the kids' bickering and attitudes this summer.  They've taken to ignoring me whenever I ask them to do anything.  I threaten them with grounding, loss of privileges, or slave duty.  Then they bicker about who did more chores or who made the mess to begin with.  Instead of cleaning up after them, I leave it sit until their Dad gets home.  If they don't want to listen to me, they'll darn well listen to him.

They are usually really good kids.  I think it's mostly cabin fever because a lot of their friends went on vacation or stayed with their biological Dads for the summer.  The kids are so bored.  I'm just so tired of it every summer.  I have all these grand plans for finishing work early and doing something fun each day, but I get the same garbage every year.  Too many kids over here, too many interruptions, too much bickering, too much mess.

Let me tell you, I'm celebrating on the first day of school.  I'm going to the coffee shop and buying a big mocha latte.  Then I'm going to sit there all by myself and read a book.  On the way home, I'm grabbing lunch for myself and watching a chick flick by myself.  No McDonalds either.

The post wasn't meant to be posted forever. Most visitors know by now.

Because advice is a part of this "company board,"
If you don't want to answer a question then don't...quit being so rude to everyone. Help and advice are a part of a forum. Just don't participate if you don't want to help someone in their quest for a great job!
That's probably so she can change her "company name" and start the cycle all over again! n

direcway has not been a "company" since at leat 09/2006. They are now hughes. sm
Service is great. Tech support stinks cause it is done in a different country. Been with direcway (now Hughes) for 5 years. wound not change.
This is how I handled it.
I also worked for a physician for over 10 years. It was an awful choice I had to make and I couldnt stand the thought of having to tell him right to his face. I knew I would get choked up, or stammer, mumble around or something. It was much eiasier for me to do an "official" resignation on paper at first. That way I knew I could say everything I needed to say and he could read it and have time to process it before we talked. I feel like when you just walk up to them and "drop the bomb" they just do not have the time to process it so they may react out of disappointment by even just a look on their face and you'll never finish what you wanted to say or what you wanted them to know as far as why your making this choice. I just expressed how I had loved my job with him but I felt it was time for me to give more time to my family etc.. I mean, really, what could someone say to the fact that you have made a choice to put your life and your family before a job. Good luck on however you approach it. We all do what is best for ourselves. Letters work for me and also because I am not a confrontal type of person.
She handled it graciously (sm)
It would have been just as awkward if not more so if she had not acknowledged it, especially after it being talked about on the show yesterday. I would imagine Star would probably think that nothing would have been said and she would just have been obviously absent. As Joy said, nothing stays the same and this is a perfect example. I guess it will almost be like a whole new show in the fall with Meredith and Star gone and Rosie and ???? replacing them. Wonder if they have people in mind yet? I've heard Gail (Oprah's best friend) as a possibility. Wouldn't it be cool if they late people at home vote on the person? That would be interesting. Then again, if they had done that with Rosie, I don't suspect she would have made the cut.
Sorry - but I think you could have handled it differently
I am assuming you are an IC - which means who you work WITH is your biz and no one else's - and no one's business if you took on a second contract.  An IC works for who she wants when she wants and within reason sets her own deadlines.  A company understands this and does not give you a 2 hour TAT unless you request it or can handle it and you have an understanding with them
However your client wants it handled.
This should be addressed somewhere in their instructions. Check with your supervisor.
Sounds like your company handled it wrong there.
Was the company threatening the MTs? It sounds like the account was threatening the company to leave.

If your company did nothing to let the MTs know they were not in danger, the company failed.

There is nothing wrong with MTs knowing that an account is in danger of quitting but the company needs to let the MTs understand whether or not that will effect their employer relationship. Two tee-totally different topics.

Regarding the Advance article, here's how I would have handled the examples

I'm curious how other MTs would have handled them?

1. Hemoglobin 9, hematocrit 39. (I would have flagged this with a blank for the hemoglobin and sent to QA).

2. The nose and mouth were suctioned on the perineum (during a C-section dictation).  (I would have changed "perineum" to "abdomen" and sent it on).

3. SKIN: Without lesions, rashes or scars (Patient has HIV and kaposi sacroma).  (I'm not the doctor.  I did not examine the patient.  Therefore, I would have transcribed as dictated and sent it as usual).

4. Left atrium is normal, measuring 4.6 cm.  (I don't get paid enough to second guess the doctor on whether the LA is "normal" or not.  You get what you pay for.)

5. VITAL SIGNS: Heart rate 70, respirations 18, BP 120/70 (in an 18-year-old with a comminuted ankle fracture).  (Again, the patient may have gotten pain medication by the time the doctor saw him, so perhaps he/she didn't have pain at the time of examination and so the vitals were normalized.  I wasn't there, I don't know.  Type verbatim and send it on!)

I think you handled it well. You wouldn't feel so good about those clothes if you cut off your

Ooops, sorry. My last post said "head head." I meant "her head." Sorry.

cherrypicking co-worker issue (meant to post it on this board instead of MQ board) sm...

I need opinions please...I work on a very small account with just a handful of ladies.  Because of the nature of the software (trying not to get too specific here) we can see who is working online and what reports they are working on in real-time...

We have one cherrypicker on the account.  Instead of using FIFO method, she retrieves the reports by author ID - usually picking the better dictators of course.  She knows I busted her and she did admit to it in on our work e-mail (not too bright) which I am saving just in case she gets out of hand - so far I'm still able to make money since really most of the dictators aren't bad.

But every night it's starting to wear on me since she's screwing up turnaround time.  I don't really want to cause a big uproar being that it is such a small account and I need to work with her almost every night usually one on one.

What would you all do?  I want to handle this as delicate and professional as possible because we can't really afford to lose anyone on this account.  In other words, I refuse to stoop to her level by cherrypicking right back.

My boss has asked me several times why so-and-so does so much more than I do...I just bite my lip at that point but one of these days I think I might explode and just open up a can of worms....

You are wise do be so thorough in your
research before committing time and money to training. By the way, you've made a very good choice for your education. Andrews is the gold standard for MT education. For a different perspective on life on the job as an MT, visit www.mtchat.com, click on the "message center" tab, and start reading. Read all the sticky topics (especially at the top of the New MTs section), read the archives, read the Andrews forum on that site, read the messages posted on the MT Business board; in short, read everything. I think you will get a different perspective on the profession from the very professional and articulate folks who frequent that site. Good luck with your training and in your career.
Very wise, but even better. sm

Lovely elderly couple came into my old office.  Married for 68 years. Holding hands to boot.  I asked them what made their marriage work so long.  The elderly gentleman winked at me and said, "Well, it's simple.  I always get the last words . . . .'yes dear.' "

Wise MT
I will certainly be praying for you.  I will pray that you can hang in there!  It has to be so hard.
SE and IC mostly same tax-wise except...sm
As an IC, you must pay the self-employment tax, which is your FICA, but you get to deduct half of it. Schedule C stays the same. I've been both IC and SE before. DISCLAIMER: I am not a CPA or tax professional. For qualified tax advise, please contact a tax professional.
A WORD FROM THE WISE!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR POSTING. SOMETIMES IT IS NICE TO KNOW YOUR NOT ALONE! I THINK I PROBABLY WILL HAVE HAVE TO FILE FOR DISABILTY BUT IT JUST KILLS ME, NOT TO FEEL LIKE A FUNCTIONAL MEMBER OF SOCIETY, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?  I STILL HOPE DEEP DOWN TO FIND THE RIGHT ONE TO GIVE ME A CHANCE IN A NEW CAREER. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING.

Actually the "three wise men"
that's how they knew to look for the star of Bethlehem and recognized the amazing event foretold by the stars.
Grow up? How about you wise up?
So, you mean to tell me that having 1 or 2 glasses of wine or beers is enough to call someone drunk? Come on and WISE UP!

Again, I didn't ask WHO GETS DRUNK AND TRANSCRIBES, I asked who has a few drinks while transcribing.

Being in the vicinity of MY OWN HOME having a drink or TWO and transcribing is no big deal to me. Some of you people are SO UPTIGHT and I think NEED TO DRINK!

HICCUP, pardon me!
Yes, that is a wise decision. (nm)
dd
Wise move.
I've been an IC with many companies and an employee with a few others. I've found that many if not most of the supervisors and managers at these places are dead weight authoritarians who get high and justify their existence by puking on people who work for a living. I left at least one place precisely because they tried to hold me responsible for mistakes made by the dictator. Happens all the time.

I wouldn't wish a future in MT on anyone.
My Mom, who was a very wise woman, would tell you...
to love her anyway just the way she is and realize that "everyone is doing the best they can with what they have to work with."  Plus, life's 2 short and life is fragile.
I don't think that optometrically wise buying off the
c
well darn. I thought I was being wise
in getting rid of credit cards - just down to 1 bank card and 1 store card that I only use when having a sale and we need new clothes and that I have 90 days to pay off without interest.
It's wise to dedicate one pc solely
for work purposes, in addition to having a back-up pc available.  If you do not have a medica/pharma spellchecker download on your pc, it's a good idea to purchase it.  Depending on who you will be transcribing for you may need an unlimited long distance calling plan if you do not have it already.  A high speed connection is recommended and necessary by most companies.  Up-dated virus protection is a must. A printer may be required.  You are a step ahead of the game by already having purchased a desk and a comfortable chair, which are a must.  If you need to purchase a foot pedal, I would recommend buying a new one.  So, depending on what you already have, start-up costs can run anywhere from $100.00 to approximately 1,000.00, and while it may seem like a huge expense, you should recoup these expenses within 3 months of working.  Good luck to you and enjoy!
