Been asked to speak to local high school ....sm

Our local high school is trying to gear curriculum towards the medical industry.  My husband is a biology teacher there and they have asked me to speak to students about Medical transcription.  Any ideas?  I have been doing this for many years but I'm no expert and never really had any actual school training except a secretarial course in a vocational school years and years ago.  Mostly on the job training at local hospital.  Should I discuss where this industy is headed?  Please help.

teach pronunciation in med school?

how in the heck does one become a doctor and pronounce things like:

ex-zeffer (that is, Effexor)

cla-mit-tra-zol (rather clotrimazole)

tur-bun-ins (how about turbinates!!)

makes me crazy...er.

In our Sunday School class, now we teach!nm

I would think the school could fire him if he can't effectively teach- sm
and the kids take advantage, etc. It is for his own good as well as everyone else that he can hear. They make hearing aids so small now, vanity is a big price to pay for not being able to hear. I would think though that the school would have good cause to can him though IF he does not try to work to the best of his ability and if hearing aids help him to work better than he needs to do it, no one is going to make fun of him for wearing them (he's a big boy anyway I'm sure he could take what the kids can dish out), I would think he'd have more trouble from the kids without them. Good luck in making him see sense.
teach and guide, start my own school? sm
I guess then they should take the Word Board off if teaching and guiding is a "no no?" Difference between teaching and just telling somebody something they can look up for themselves.

Yeah I am into books! Not too slow if you know what you are doing! Still do 250-300 lph with accuracy which is more than I can say for your post.
I DO call you a crook. Do you teach your kids

I don't think I asked about MQ. I just wanted to know the
Shorthand and Shortcut, so I can buy the best one.
At least they asked you how you wanted to handle it. SM

They could have just not paid you for those dictations or they could have just called you up and told you they weren't going to pay you for that those dictations.  As it is, they attempted to be diplomatic, I guess.

I would, in a friendly way, say something like "I wish I would have known which ones had already been typed before I started typing.  I could have skipped over the ones already done."  And then ask with the next group of dictations, if any have been transcribed that they provide you with a list up front.  But I agree with everyone else, I would let them have this one since they are probably scrambling to try to figure out the mess that the former girl left. But if it happens again, I would put my foot down and let them know you're not in the business of typing for free.

Just got an offer from a local hospital and wanted to run it passed you all before I say yes...

Employee status w/benefits

$13.50/hr with 0.05 cpl incentive fo anything above 1200 lpd and $2.00 shift differential (for 2nd shift which I will be working)

1000 lpd minimum productivity requirement

Work in the office first month for training and then home with hospital provided computer.

Dictaphone EXText Word Client transcription platform

Is this a decent offer?  I've worked at the same place in the office forever and haven't actually been out there  looking in several years.  I tried working for a national part time at one time because I wanted to be working from home, but couldn't see how someone could make a living on 0.08 cpl without working yourself into an early grave, so I gave up the part time job and kept the full time in office job.  Now I have a new boss who doesn't know her butt from a hole in the ground and I started looking around and came across this current job and before I jump ship, I want to make sure I'm getting a good deal.

The $13.50 seemed kind of low to me given my years of experience (13 years), but because I was at my other job for so long I maxed out pay wise.

try local school...

Is there a school nearby that offers a transcription course? Students who are either done with their program or dropped out always seem to want to sell their stuff for cheap since they sometimes can't sell their books/CDs back to the bookstore. In my experience there is usually a board somewhere on campus where students can post stuff.

Also, you can use the school to find out what books they are using in the program (check out the bookstore) and then buy it cheap off of Amazon.com. Hope this helps.

You could try a local beauty school
Their rates are extremely reasonable.  The one near me only allows students to cut and style hair who are about to graduate so they are quite good !  Can't beat the price - about $7 !
Local school, but really learned everything on the job,
q
We had a local program like that but now it is struggling
Because so many of the jobs have gone home over the years. In the early 1990's the service I worked for nearly always hired our intern(s) because it was such a great program, but when our service was sold, then sold again to a national, everyone was sent home and the college lost another intern slot.

Yet another reason new MTs have trouble finding work!
Say: Operator - this is the call that I wanted traced! nm

Call your local MD!
find a medical care provider, whomever is on call for your local MD, and do what they say. Once something lke this involves the head/neck/face, it can get hairy. And if it begins affecting his airway, there's hell to pay. Find someone medical to give you advice right away. Otherwise, he could end up on the floor, and you on the fone with 9-1-1.
at my local hospital, they always call the

I think that is pretty standard. Calling by the first name only would be rather confusing. Especially if it is a busy hospital with a waiting room that is always full, like our local hospital.

I have a "questionable behavior" story for you! I went to the walk-in clinic held at our local hospital b/c I was having pain in my pinky finger. The waiting room was packed, as always. I go in, see the doc, and he tells me to go back to the waiting room until they call my name again. After a few mins in the waiting room, he calls my name & I get up thinking he was going to bring me into a room to privately give me my diagnosis. NOPE! The dope says it to me, loudly - not at all in a whispering tone, in the middle of the waiting room for everyone to hear!! He said "I think it is some kind of fungal infection" His actions were not only humiliating, but wrong! It was not an infection, rather a blood clot that developed on my nerve that needed to be removed surgically! Now, that, I think qualifies for a HIPAA violation!!  (Yes I did file a complaint with the Patient Care Rep)

See if your local college has an MT program that you can just take certain units of, like terminol

Call your local paper and see if they have a route

available in your area. You have to be an early riser and work 7 days a week though.  I used to get up at 6:00 to walk.  Now I get up at 5:00, walk for one hour every morning with only 65 newspapers, and I make an extra $70 to $80 a week for 7 hours a week.

My sister does 250 papers by car (roadside tubes) and she makes $1000 a month. It takes her 3 hours a day though and she has a full time job, so I think that's a bit much.

Seriously though, papers don't hire kids anymore to deliver because kids just can't or don't want to do it.  Besides, who wants their 13-year-old out walking the streets at 5:00 a.m. ?.

No boss, good exercise, good money.

Go through your local yellow pages and call
companies who advertise they offer health insurance.  Call several companies as the premiums can vary widely, although the coverage will be the same.   I did this and called 6 different companies and the premiums varied as much as $200.00/mo for the same exact insurance.   Celtic was the company that had the best rate for us, but that was nearly 4 years ago.   If you have no pre-existing conditions you can get a temporary insurance through Fortis for 6 months to a year depending on your state, provided that you have not been without coverage for greater than 45 (I think) days.   You can also go on-line to einsurance.com and get an idea of rates, though I still suggest you call local agencies.
Go through you local yellow pages and call
companies that offer health insurance and get a quote.  Call several because the premiums can vary significantly.  BCBS may have a low rate, but they are a pain in the rear to deal with and deny more claims than they pay.
Call your local BC/BS for private insurance. (sm)

I pay $292 for just myself with a $750 deductible.  After the first year, they will pay for pre-existing.  I hated mine at first, but I'm used to it now and it's coverage that will protect me.  Thankfully, I make enough money that it's working out well for me.  Check out the link below.  They may have affordable insurance that will help you as well.  A friend of mine is considering this.  Her pharmacist thought it was a nice policy.  Good luck.

When the kids started school I wanted a job in my home town. A hospital clerk position (sm)
came open. You started compiling charts, making copies, etc. Then I was promoted after a few months and began learning transcription and did that part of the day. Then a few months later they taught me coding and abstracting and I did that part of the day. It was a great learning experience to learn things from the bottom up. Needless to say, I am an old dog here who has been doing this more than 25 years now.

I agree. Take none of this. Let their behavior be known and even if necessary call the local News
many TV stations have to help. There was a service in our city who never paid her people and the local news On Your Side was contacted and not only was she on the news for not paying but she was also picked up by the police. There is usually at TV station in every major area (even if they are not in a major area, will go to the local surrounding areas) to help folks with problems such as this. Take it to whoever you can. People like this do not respect you.

I never understood why people continue to work for people that are even one day late. Pay should be on time. If it isn't, the MTSO would never get an ounce more of work out of me and believe me he/she WOULD pay me! I am not one to let it go. I too have worked in the legal field and I do know how to proceed.

Just don't give them one more day of your time.
Call local dentists and see if you could talk (see inside)
with their hygienists. Maybe you could drop by at lunch time or something and they'd be willing to talk to you, or maybe you could arrange to chat by phone when they are not working.
Yes, call your local vet, any vet, and ask for the wild rabbit rescuer in your area.
There is always someone nearly everywhere. If you can't find one, please write me and I'll search for someone for you if you're short on time.  They are so worth saving.  Mom might still be around. Let's hope so!
Call a local camera store and see if they offer this service.

Many times photographers will also provide a similar service.  I personally haven't had it done, but have heard of people doing this for a memorial service or a wedding.   They can take still pictures/slides and incorporate them too.

I probably read about it on MSN or someone mentioned it to me. Maybe call local college or JUCO
?
You did call the school, didnt you?

My first job was a total cold call to small local company...got hired over the phone- sm
give it a shot. Look in your yellow pages or on-line white and yellow pages and see what you can come up with. MT Daily has a list by state of MT companies to with their contact info. Also test your butt off anywhere and everywhere on line, you will learn a lot during the process. I found it quite enlightening when I was doing it 3+ years ago. Good luck.
I had to call my supervisor to get the hospital to program those settings.

Pros and cons of each too. I have two little ones that will be starting school soon and I would like opinions on all. Thanks in advance! :)

Buy local. The local stores pay taxes to support your city and state. (SM)
Using online and catalogues does nothing to promote the local economy.  We complain about outsourcing and about the big companies gobbling up all the work so the jobs at local hospitals are gone, yet we do the same thing when we buy on ebay, catalog, and these web sites that may be located any place in the world as their primary business location.
I went local. Great local tech support, they know what I do and were able to set it up just for me

those who can't do....teach

There is  a HUGE difference between reading what someone else has already deciphered versus being the one who is deciphering it at 140 words per minute.  The bottom line is that we all make mistakes because we are paid on production - not because we are ignorant or guessing or whatever unprofessional nonsense they choose to call it.  As for the comment about not spelling physician names correctly (cities, schools, etc.), we do not get paid by the hour to search for these things - QA people do or they are getting paid for lines they do not type to compensate their time.  There is no cause for unprofessionalism or personal attacks.  I do not appreciate commentary.  I don't appreciate remarks about punctuation, grammar etc. particulary when it comes from someone who doesn't understand what an independent clause is, a complete sentence and so on.  Passing on their infinite wisdom because it is what they "were taught" isn't valid - back it up and I don't mean with the BOS, which basically boils down to someone else's opinion.    I find the QA people contradict themselves left and right, contradict each other, contradict the account manager and most importantly contradict account specifics, and some contradict the doctors themselves.   Very few have come across my path that were friendly, helpful or even knowledgeable.  They just often have misplaced confidence in "understanding" the word no else can...I find it better to err on the side of caution if it is a word of substance; if it is not, move on.  Perhaps, QA should respectfully mentor the newbies, give feedback to MTs who make repeated mistakes and otherwise take a supporting role in helping MTs to produce quality documents, instead of getting into a p1ssing contest.

How do you teach someone s/m
who has been typing since age 16 to now only put 1 space after a period instead of 2? That's going to take a LONG time to break that habit.
I did that with 2 kids with time mgmt and a high school girl who babysat 3 days a week after school

some one should teach them grammar

The cost of running a private school or any school is expensive....
Why do you think public schools are so run down and can't find good teachers?  Because the government and people to not put forth the effort or $$$$ to improve the educational system.
I teach classes online.
nm
What was wrong with trying to teach them when they were young?
I learned to dust, wash dishes, clean my room, etc., when I was about 5 years old, and it was part of our routine. Every week our chores would rotate and as we got old, we learned more. Same thing with cooking. You obviously let this go too long but now is the time to change it, not when you have a nervous breakdown.
There are schools that teach you the business in about...
6 or 8 weeks, not quite sure.  But the idea of expressing anal glands on the dog just sickens me.  I love dogs, but I couldn't do that nasty little detail.  no way, no how.
We teach people how to treat us - I would not put up with this.
It seems this arrangement no longer works with your schedule. If they say they need the work now and you cannot do that any longer then you need to let them know why. Best of luck to you.
I think it is all about your beliefs and what you teach the kids...sm

We do let our kids trick or treat, as stated before.  However, it is all just for fun (and candy) for them.  I think it is all about what you teach your kids.  I see what you are saying about Christmas, I actually can't stand it when people celebrate Christmas who don't believe in God and Jesus.  But I guess someone could say the same thing about me (for "celebrating"Halloween without "believing" in what it stands for).  I think I am confusing myself!!!  All I think that matters is what YOU believe and what you are teaching your children.

However, now that this subject has come up, I am going to do some more research on Halloween and possibly consider the idea of a "fall harvest party" or something like that.  I do like that idea, so thanks for letting me explore other ideas!!!  I never thought that deeply about getting free candy from the neighbors!!

Teach a newbie to fish
I don't think it helps them. I started looking at the Word Help board after I read a post earlier this evening about the low-level questions newbies are wanting answers for. One was something like "vigomatic...this is somewhere on the head." Are you KIDDING??? I couldn't believe it. I think it would serve this person much better to give him/her some ideas on how to find the answer rather than to just give the answer away. Just giving the answer away is not really helping them learn anything. It's just letting them copy your homework.

What's that saying? Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

In the earlier discussion I mentioned, someone thought posting on the board (in a virtual situation) was the same thing as asking a teacher for an answer in a classroom situation. Well, I think a great teacher in a classroom situation would do the same thing; i.e., point the student toward the dictionary or the encyclopedia or whatever, not just give away the answer.

I really have to wonder how someone can end up as a working transcriber & not know, or at least have been exposed to, the word "zygomatic" at some point. How did this person get a job? Scary, especially considering how protective we are of our field and how much better at it we think we are than anyone else on the planet.

There are no shortcuts. Every great working Transcriptionist has had to look everything up, has had to go through the unbearable period when getting through one report was like swimming through concrete. Are newbies these days under the impression that there is another way? Because there isn't.

QA should be used to teach and aid in the process of MT'ing sm
Not to pick apart and make the MT feel inadequate. Does it really matter if there is a comma missing....not really. The report still reads the same and is a technical document.

QA should be friendly and helpful, at least that is how I try to be in my QA position. We are in this together not against each other. We have the same purpose....to make sure that patient has the most accurate record possible. We all should work as a team, in my most humble opinion.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
