Is your antivirus program up to date
and a really good one because I'm thinking it sounds like you have a virus.  I got a virus on my computer even though I had a Norton antivirus program running on it.  There are so many new viruses that come out all the time it's hard for the antivirus programs to keep up with them.  Maybe you should install a different antivirus programs/sypware CD than the one on your computer.  Just a thought
Norton antivirus program
If my Norton antivirus program expires, will it still work but just not allow me to get updates, or will it stop working altogether?  I was hoping to wait until the weekend to install a new one.
Exactly, one should only react to messages and warning from the antivirus program
one subscribed. Dr Virus! LOL!
If the firewall is the problem the you can set up your firewall to allow you to access the FTP -sm
difficult to do. But usually my firewall springs up with a message when I try to access something that it won't let me do and then you can "allow" it. So since you are not getting that sort of message I doubt its the firewall, but I suppose it is a possibility. You could always just turn it off, try accessing the FTP, if it works then you have your answer. Obviously turn it back on when you get off, then set your firewall up to allow you access to that IP address. It sounds weird though that you can do it on XP but not 98, I have used FTP software for years and have never had any trouble using it with either OS. Good luck in figuring it out!
Just because some spell-check program does not
recognize a word does not mean that it is not a legitimate word. Not every word possible in the English language appears in the dictionary. An English-language dictionary assumes knowledge on the part of the user of how to form English words--such as, for example, how to form modifiers by adding "able" to a verb. Many words of that type will not appear in the dictionary. They don't need to be there. The base or root words are there and the meaning of the endings is explained in the dictionary, either as a separate entry or in an English grammar section, so it is assumed that the user of the dictionary has enough knowledge of the mechanics of English to use that information to determine how to form, for example, modifiers from verbs. If every single word that could be formed by using accepted English word-forming rules were to appear in an English-language dictionary, it would be too big to lift. If a word follows acceptable rules for English word formation, then it's a legitimate English word, even if your spell check doesn't recognize it.
And hopefully one with a spell check program
OUCH...your posts kinda make my eyes bleed between the spelling errors and the stilted grammar.

I'm gonna guess you're a newbie...or at least I hope you are.

Does anybody have program to dle-ck MQ lines? I would like to check every report

to see if all my work is being counted on a 65-character line, including spaces EVERY TIME - or are there occasional reports through the day/times during the day that the lines actually go longer than 65 characters.

At this point I would like to take the time to verify each and every report.  Sometimes it just feels like a report should have had more lines - or that a report goes on over to page 3 and you know it should have more lines and it is not much lines and you are on such a time crunch you don't what to go and count (of course because the report IS long).

So, is there a program out there that I could use as a double check to verify they aren't turning the knob at certain times during the day to make the lines be i.e. 90 lines or so?  I hope I have explained this good enough.

Thanks if anybody knows of one.

It's not personal, it's business.  (I always like that line from "You've Got Mail")

Does anyone know of a good, but cheap spell check program? sm
Just did an upgrade to XP and have lost my "free" Spellex that I got with my schooling on my old computer. I have a new job but cant afford to buy the Spellex program yet. Any good ones that do both medical and drug names that is CHEAP? I plan to buy the spellex again when I get a few paychecks, but for now I need something. It is getting really tiring looking up so many drug names!
Could be your firewall. nm

free firewall
I use free AVG for my virus protection.  I think they may have a firewall, too, as they have added some new things, like Spyware and rootware.  Right now I am using ZoneAlarm for my firewall, although Microsoft already has a built-in firewall.  If you want to look at AVG, do a search for "free virus protection," and it should appear there.  If you go to grisoft.com, all I can find there are things to purchase, but no link to the free downloads.
firewall info
You might try looking at some reviews on C-Net.com. Go to the website and find the reviews section for security. We use AVG for virus protection and Zone Alarm for our firewall (both free). Microsoft has a firewall built into their OS, too, which you might want to go ahead and activate while you're deciding. As I understand it, the MS firewall is pretty weak, but I'm only familiar with XP, not Vista.
Yes I did have a separate firewall....sm
I have also used the AVG for years. My friend has also used it for years. I know a lot of people who have used it and continue to with no problems. I had no problems until someone hacked into my computer. When I took it to the computer guy, he said you are using a free AVG version. He said that is the problem. He said why do you think they are free? They don't fully protect your computer. I have no idea with a firewall on how they still got into my computer but they did. My friend had someone hack into hers while using AVG free version and separate firewall and stole her identity. I am just trying to keep the expensive mistake I made from happening to other people. It is costing me $250 to have the computer repaired.
VPN and my firewall question

Hi. This is the first time I'm using a VPN to work, so please forgive my ignorance of the whole subject.

I was having lots of connection problems, being dropped, etc., on my first day and the IT person was supposed to contact me. That took a while to get back to me, so I had been trying different things. When I reported I could only connect when I disabled my firewall, they said "of course," that I can't be connected to the VPN and have a firewall up and I would have to work my whole shift every day without a firewall, like duh, I should have known this was their tone and I had wasted their time. Not to mention, I have forgotten twice already to enable my firewall when I'm done working and have left it off.

Is this standard? Or is there a mode I can set it to, to work with the VPN or something. I'm feeling pretty vulnerable here, with my own computer at risk, not theirs.

Thanks for any enlightement you can provide!

Sarah

Been using AVG for years. No problems.Have a firewall also
that will prevent the highjacking. Were you using a firewall?

My firewall is a totally separate and different program from AVG.
Router has hardware firewall that SM
needs to be configured, so it has that for extra security. Plugging modem directly into phone jack leaves you wide open to trojan horses, viruses, etc. I have NetGear, it is good. LinkSys is Walmart quality but adequate; we had a lot trouble with ours resetting during power surges so keep your ID handy and do not lose your manual.
It sounds like a setting in your Norton firewall.

Any good/bad news about free firewall

I needing to find a firewall and thought I'd ask you all for opinions - Any good ones?  Any to stay away from?

When I am on my computer, I keep hearing clicking sounds as you hear when you click on something within a website.  Am I being paranoid?  I have heard stories where people's computers have been "overtaken".  My Norton Security expired this month and just a couple of weeks ago I downloaded a free antivirus program that was recommended by my home office.  Now I'm without a firewall and I think I made a mistake in doing that.

Conflict with LWWLicenseCleanup.0001 file and firewall?

I installed the Comodo firewall on my computer and it seems to be working fine except one very annoying problem.  For some reason, I will open a program, ie, DocQscribe, Instant Messenger, etc., and my firewall keeps asking whether to allow LWWLicenseCleanup.0001 to run, I click yes but then when I open the program again for some reason this stupid file is trying to link to another part of the program I guess and I get the same window asking for permission to allow it.  Here's the kicker, a lot of the time it will totally lock up my system and I will have to reboot. I called Stedman's tech and they really didn't know what to do but he had me go into Administrative Tools and turn off a Stedman's License file but still this crazy Cleanup.0001 keeps trying to run because my firewall is still detecting it.  Has anyone else had this problem? I did a Google search and found a link to one other MT who had a problem with this file and Zone Alarm but there was not really a solution offered.  The firewall I am using is Comodo.

AVG Antivirus
I agree - AVG Antivirus is great - I actually have the pro version, which has a few more bells and whistles, but the free version is great too - mine runs an update every morning and scans my entire hard drive once a week and I never even notice - it also does a registry scan on startup, so you don't load anything onto your system when you turn your computer on - it's great!
Antivirus
It works great! No headaches like with Nortons. It runs and you don't even know it.
Antivirus software
I used to buy my software directly on the internet, but found that AVG is free, was highly recommended by many tech guys, and I have it running on two computers in the house. Catches all of the new viruses, so I don't have to worry about spending all that money on antivirus software. Try it. Goggle it to find the free software, as it updates on a daily basis and it scans your computer any time you want it to.
perhaps your antivirus or antispam?

Antivirus 2009
You are so right...it was entirely my fault...I definitely will be more careful from now on! I downloaded the Malwarebytes antivirus and it has partially removed it, but it is still blocking my IE, not sure how to get rid of this but I will keep trying.

Thank you so much for your help.
Antivirus programs sm

On my personal computer, I seem to have picked up some kind of virus.  I keep getting popups all over the place and one of them is telling me that I have viruses and I should purchase their program to remove them, which I don't want to do because that program is likely a virus in sheep's clothing.  I was running AVG (the free program) but apparently it did not stop whatever bug I picked up.

My questions are:
1.  If I purchase an antivirus program (from Walmart or Staples, for example), will this remove whatever has already taken up residence on my PC?

2.  What is the best virus program for the money on the market?

Thanks in advance!

What kind of antivirus do you use on your computer? sm
I have been using Norton AV, but my nephew (who goes to ITT Tech) says that I can just use AVG which is a free download antivirus....Im just not sure what to do.  The tech guy I normally use is the one who said Norton.  Anyone here use the free downloadable antiviruses or do you get better protection with the "paid" for antiviruses?   Thanks.
I doubt that, they use antivirus all the time. NM

question about antivirus software
I have always purchased my antivirus software online and downloaded it onto my computer.   If I buy the software, say at Sam's Club or anywhere, can it be loaded onto numerous computers?  I have 4 networked in my home and all are going to be running out of protection soon.  In other words if I only have to buy it once that would be great.  TIA
Beware of Antivirus 2009

While working late at night, I had something pop up that I thought was a MS product called Antivirus 2009, and thinking it was an update on their security, without checking it out, I clicked ok, then at the end, it states it costs $59...and I realized that it was not MS, so I backed out of it.  I currently have AVG 8.0 and it has always done a good job for me...but now after several days and asking several different places, plus the Internet, I cannot get rid of this.  It seems to be tied into my Google site, the one I use so much.

Does anyone know how you get rid of it?  I removed the software (or so I thought) from my program) but it is blocking Google, and just keeps popping up constantly...driving me absolutely nuts.

Does anyone know of a solution to get rid of this?  I hate to pay a techie to come out to my house to get rid of this, but I will if I have to...just thought I would ask here first.

Thank you for your help.

Beware of Antivirus 2009
AVG is great and not a resource "hog' like McAfee or Norton -- I have had computer problems in the past, and have dealt with Hiwired.com -- they are inexpensive, ALL USA-based techs and great people to work with -- they understand the MT and if you need a progam completely erased and you tell them as such, they will do it -- I had a problem a couple of weeks ago with Adobe and could NOT get files to load that were in that format -- they got it cleared up and no problems but almost every "tekkie" person including them, that I have talked to has recommended AVG
I am running antivirus softwre sm
and I am not working right now. The problem hs been going on for a couple months. I cleaned out my computer and it helped alot of other things, but not this problem. Thanks for the reply.
I would not bet on free antivirus programs,
that's how one usually gets some viruses in.

Download
McAfee
or
Norton.

Nothing good is for free....
for TechSupport: Do you think that free antivirus
programs ar safe?
Ewido security, Avast antivirus are what I use.

Search Google for AVG free antivirus

no virus but im sure you get trogans that are not detected by antivirus
Nothing is free. There is always a catch.
PRD is a DOS program. I don't think it work with Word, a Window's program.

It will count everything if you go in the settings and program it to. Good program!
Sylcount is an awesome and accurate counting program also. That will count everything if you "tell it to".
Change your battery. Also, some antivirus, screen savers,

and system utilities can cause computer time clock loss.

Download eTrust EZ Antivirus. Free, and it got rid of my spyware.

Multiple antivirus/spyware/adware on at same time?

Can you run multiple programs for antivirus, etc. at the same time, such as this PC Tools free antivirus that I keep talking about, and the AVG that I keep reading about?

I know you can only have 1 firewall, but I'm not sure about the other security software.  Any input?  This computer stuff is SO and confusing and oh so frustrating!

Thanks in advance.

Whoa - I mistakenly downloaded a free antivirus
and nearly ruined my PC because it downloaded threatening messages constantly, constantly pestering me to download the 2009 version for a fee. I did not have a virus, it was just a fake.

It took me months to get rid of the program and had to keep researching to find out how to get the files out completely.

Just a heads up - make sure you read it before downloading.
Does anyone know of a good free antivirus software that will work with -sm
windows XP.  I currently have AVG but I am not happy with that.  Thanks.
Also avoid Antivirus 2008/2009. It is very nasty.

Also regarding foot pedals and antivirus software programs
You can also try to find foot pedals on ebay, there they are much cheaper, I know, everybody knows this.

I think every antivirus software 'works' with any platform.
Why should it make a difference?
I do not think that the companies mean that some antivirus softwares DO NOT WORK with their platforms, they just ask for the safest and believe tht these 2, Norton and McAfee are the safest.

I work with Escription/Editscript and it is strongly recommended by my employer that either Noton or McAfee is downloaded and paid for.

I have McAfee, because, be;ieve it or not, MTSOs see these 2 as sefest.

Now I am expecting to be bashed by certain MTs for my 'rude' comment.
Never mind.
My Norton antivirus is showing a red X on my email and I have no idea what happened. How do I fix
that.
You can use Shorthand in ANY program, it works outside your program
I have never found a platform it did not work with and I have worked on several different versions of Meditech. Just start using it.
Is it their computer? Why are they installing a firewall and autocorrect on your computer? That sm
