free firewall

I use free AVG for my virus protection.  I think they may have a firewall, too, as they have added some new things, like Spyware and rootware.  Right now I am using ZoneAlarm for my firewall, although Microsoft already has a built-in firewall.  If you want to look at AVG, do a search for "free virus protection," and it should appear there.  If you go to grisoft.com, all I can find there are things to purchase, but no link to the free downloads.

Any good/bad news about free firewall

I needing to find a firewall and thought I'd ask you all for opinions - Any good ones?  Any to stay away from?

When I am on my computer, I keep hearing clicking sounds as you hear when you click on something within a website.  Am I being paranoid?  I have heard stories where people's computers have been "overtaken".  My Norton Security expired this month and just a couple of weeks ago I downloaded a free antivirus program that was recommended by my home office.  Now I'm without a firewall and I think I made a mistake in doing that.

If the firewall is the problem the you can set up your firewall to allow you to access the FTP -sm
difficult to do. But usually my firewall springs up with a message when I try to access something that it won't let me do and then you can "allow" it. So since you are not getting that sort of message I doubt its the firewall, but I suppose it is a possibility. You could always just turn it off, try accessing the FTP, if it works then you have your answer. Obviously turn it back on when you get off, then set your firewall up to allow you access to that IP address. It sounds weird though that you can do it on XP but not 98, I have used FTP software for years and have never had any trouble using it with either OS. Good luck in figuring it out!
Could be your firewall. nm

firewall info
You might try looking at some reviews on C-Net.com. Go to the website and find the reviews section for security. We use AVG for virus protection and Zone Alarm for our firewall (both free). Microsoft has a firewall built into their OS, too, which you might want to go ahead and activate while you're deciding. As I understand it, the MS firewall is pretty weak, but I'm only familiar with XP, not Vista.
Yes I did have a separate firewall....sm
I have also used the AVG for years. My friend has also used it for years. I know a lot of people who have used it and continue to with no problems. I had no problems until someone hacked into my computer. When I took it to the computer guy, he said you are using a free AVG version. He said that is the problem. He said why do you think they are free? They don't fully protect your computer. I have no idea with a firewall on how they still got into my computer but they did. My friend had someone hack into hers while using AVG free version and separate firewall and stole her identity. I am just trying to keep the expensive mistake I made from happening to other people. It is costing me $250 to have the computer repaired.
VPN and my firewall question

Hi. This is the first time I'm using a VPN to work, so please forgive my ignorance of the whole subject.

I was having lots of connection problems, being dropped, etc., on my first day and the IT person was supposed to contact me. That took a while to get back to me, so I had been trying different things. When I reported I could only connect when I disabled my firewall, they said "of course," that I can't be connected to the VPN and have a firewall up and I would have to work my whole shift every day without a firewall, like duh, I should have known this was their tone and I had wasted their time. Not to mention, I have forgotten twice already to enable my firewall when I'm done working and have left it off.

Is this standard? Or is there a mode I can set it to, to work with the VPN or something. I'm feeling pretty vulnerable here, with my own computer at risk, not theirs.

Thanks for any enlightement you can provide!

Sarah

Been using AVG for years. No problems.Have a firewall also
that will prevent the highjacking. Were you using a firewall?

My firewall is a totally separate and different program from AVG.
Router has hardware firewall that SM
needs to be configured, so it has that for extra security. Plugging modem directly into phone jack leaves you wide open to trojan horses, viruses, etc. I have NetGear, it is good. LinkSys is Walmart quality but adequate; we had a lot trouble with ours resetting during power surges so keep your ID handy and do not lose your manual.
It sounds like a setting in your Norton firewall.

Check your antivirus program or firewall.

Conflict with LWWLicenseCleanup.0001 file and firewall?

I installed the Comodo firewall on my computer and it seems to be working fine except one very annoying problem.  For some reason, I will open a program, ie, DocQscribe, Instant Messenger, etc., and my firewall keeps asking whether to allow LWWLicenseCleanup.0001 to run, I click yes but then when I open the program again for some reason this stupid file is trying to link to another part of the program I guess and I get the same window asking for permission to allow it.  Here's the kicker, a lot of the time it will totally lock up my system and I will have to reboot. I called Stedman's tech and they really didn't know what to do but he had me go into Administrative Tools and turn off a Stedman's License file but still this crazy Cleanup.0001 keeps trying to run because my firewall is still detecting it.  Has anyone else had this problem? I did a Google search and found a link to one other MT who had a problem with this file and Zone Alarm but there was not really a solution offered.  The firewall I am using is Comodo.

Abacus is not free. It is $20 but worth it. You can download a trial version free which does not h
I have used this for years and have compared to Sylvan, Word, and MP Count, etc. When you have it set to count every character, bold, shift, tab, etc. It is great and always higher than the others. Now if you are wanting gross lines like in Word then no it won't be as high because Word counts blanks lines and Abacus counts a line only if there is a character on it. There is also two places to check for it to count the Headers/Footers. If you have the FREE version then it must be the trial or a very old version so you don't have all the features and functions.
Free? As in, free trial? Otherwise, I don't think you'll find a spellcheck software that's

Is it their computer? Why are they installing a firewall and autocorrect on your computer? That sm
is usually the responsibility of the transcriptionist, especially if an IC or SE.  Which company?
There are free ones out there. I have been using a free one for 5 years. sm
Just have to research FTP server software.
free? We are not *free* - what planet R U on?

Free? Liberal?  You know nothing about me......I'm a 4th generation American so don't get up in my face......

We have a bad bad reputation today....and we do NOT HAVE 60 ALLIES/COUNTRIES BACKING US UP IN IRAQ....you better open up your eyes to the REAL stats.  Perhaps in 2003 we had 60 allies/countries backing us up....NAME 60 today.  I can name maybe 10 countries.......

You are terribly off-base.........even the soldiers have spoken up stating *unfortunately, this has become OUR vietnam* -

here's where you might think of beginning...iraqi veterans against the war......not a liberal website by any stretch of the imagination..

AVG free
I used McAfee, Norton, Panda, etc, all types of viruses and worms slipped through and caused my computer to crash. I now use AVG free edition, free upgrade every day and free check every day of my computer, that I set at at 4:00 a.m. If in doubt try www.worldstart.com, lots of computer geeks there and they will answer your questions about computers, etc on their message board. They have helped me a few times with reliable, good information about many different problems on my computer. Good luck.

Nothing is free!!
My family is in the restaurant business and I can cook like a maniac .. so screw the free meal stuff!!  I am over 50 .. look great for my age .. make very good money .. have no bills .. and though my daughter lives here she is 32 and wishes I would meet someone and cut her a break!!  I was a nurse in another life.  Do I want to take care of someone whose body is in worse shape than mine .. no; do I want to cook for someone who makes a mess I have to clean just because the moron breathes .. no; do I want to hear the constant whining, burping, farting, dribbling, and all that other geezer stuff .. a thousand times no!!  So, I find a guy who is 10 years younger than me and he is crazy about me and likes my old body, and we get along great .. but I have issues with the 10 years and I feel I am more than a wild piece of keister and nothing is free .. and that is on a good day!!  LOL!  Oh, yes, and he is cute as a button too .. I must be over the edge.  Maybe not
Can anyone tell me what the name of the free SM

Thanks for your help.

This one is not free. If someone KNOWS of one
Thanks.
I don't think there is another free one
There are different footpedals available though, and not all are interchangeable between transcription modules. I have two pedals, one that I ordered to use with Express Scribe that connects via serial port, and then I got a new computer that did not have the serial port and I also began using the Olympus module, and so I ordered the Olympus pedal, which has two connector ends that you can switch so that you can connect via either serial port or USB.

I am not sure why the pedals are not interchangeable (some of them can be used with more than one module, but I just do not know how to tell the difference other than ordering the pedal based on recommendations from the software manuf. of the transcription module).

I also have had a problem with the Olympus pedal that started after I began loading .wav files into it. It is made to be used with .dss files, but plays .wav and other file types as well, but when I have been away from the computer for a while or when I have closed the programs and reopen them, I often times will have to reach behind my tower and unplug the pedal and then plug it back in. I am not sure what has caused the problem though because for the first couple of months using the Olympus I never had to do that.

...or you can do it for free (sm)

by eating less and exercising more.  I'm not being a smarty, but this method had me from 235.5 pounds to the 119 pounds I am now, so I'm just speaking from experience.  I even kept it off through a pregnancy because I learned how to eat regular food in an intelligent way.

These weight loss plans do NOT offer the secret code.  It's within the person who wants to lose weight!

I'm getting it for free
We bought a couple of new HP computers this fall and we get a a copy for free, which we should get within a couple of weeks. We will probably install in on a spare computer to see what it is like before putting it on our new ones. Hopefully the software that we use for work will be compatible with it!
Do you want to pay for it or want for free?

Do you want to pay for it or want it for free?

No fee; it is free
There is no fee; you must have clicked the wrong button.  I'm sending the signatures myself (out of my pocket) to DC.  Try again; no fee to sign it.  It is free.  http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/medrecords/
I use AVG Free.
I bought a refurbished hard drive and loaded microsoft office 2003.  So many companies are not allowing Vista or 2007, so I felt this was the way to go.  I have had good luck so far and a great running system.
I use AVG Free also. I also have several other
programs for adware, malware, and spyware. I usually search Kim Komando's site for things like that. I find that she is pretty much on the mark with her choices, recommendations, etc. When I hear that I "need" to install something, I figure if I don't know what it will do or not do, then I just leave it alone. A good running computer is a happy computer. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Not OP but I have done this for free too
I go in through the IRS's website and select Free E-File and go from there. You can choose from several different software programs. I have used H&R Block for the past 3 years this way and have never paid a dime.
AVG Free
This is an anti-virus program that has been recommended by all my "tech gurus" including Hiwired.com -- its free and comes HIGHLY recommended.
Hey a free one!
I'll check that out too. Thanks!

I think it expires in 60 or 90 days.  Then you have to pay
Free help

One of the best anti-virus programs out there is AVG 8.0, and you can download it for free. Combined with Spy Sweeper by Webroot, your PC will be completely protected. Ad Aware is another good one.

Today I have been poring over job listing sites looking at the openings posted, and I picked up several viruses. There is so much junk out there....

RE: Free
They will replace it for free. I didn't know that. You just contact them and they will replace it. I just kept buying them.
?? A free AV that did that...sm
..would hardly be likely to sell its "paid" version to anyone. Nothing like that could go unnoticed by the technical community and their reputation would be trashed instantly.

AVG supports its free version through the sales of its paid version and offers the free version as a service to the computing community. In doing so, their free version has a very good reputation. I recommend the paid version simply because it is a much more complete package of protection.
Are you looking for free ones?
Googling found one that's $18 for a CD manual, but I didn't stumble across anything free.
free software....
I guess I'm just ditzy.... but what is all this about the software... how do I access this?? Thanks for your patience!
free software
Oh - gotcha.  Thanks.... but what is everyone going on about the new features??  I'm still lost on that -
You can try ShortCuts for free....sm

Since ADVANCE is free, there would
be little immediate impact if we cancel our subscriptions. Contact the advertisers and express your displeasure. They're the ones who provide the income stream for ADVANCE. They need to know that the people they're trying to reach are displeased and that their companies are associated with an extremely unpopular position.
I use Free MP Count
A long time ago I used Sylcount, then I used DocuCount on my old computer but when I upgraded to a new computer/software, I had to find something else. I compared Abacus and MP Count and I, personally, was happier with the consistent counts I got with MP Count. Also, Joe Vann supports his product well - even the free version! It makes for a very professional Invoice/billing statement that I use for my own local account.

Why pay at all? Grisoft's AVG is free.

McAfee was good back in the olden days of computing.  I haven't used them since then.  Norton is OK.  Honestly, I dislike Norton because it's annoying and expensive.

I use Grisoft's AVG for antivirus, Sygate Personal Firewall, and AdAware/Spyboy Search & Destroy for spyware.  All free.  All work great.

You know -- I'm free to work for however
many companies I want.

If I made $50K a month from 5 companies and you only make but $500 from 1 company -- that's my reward for being resourceful, for working hard, for doing the work that is offered when it is offered.

Nice thing about this country is you are free -- free to be as rich as you want to be or as poor as you want to be!! I love it!!
There is a free 30 day trial you
can download to your computer. But it is missing a couple of features, can't remember which ones
Are there free FTP programs?

Are there free FTP programs?

TIA

Anyone have a link for a free (sm)
greeting card site that does not have a lot of annoying popups? I just need a quick birthday card.
Thank you!
