people who don't understand our jobs as MTs, I wanted to add a couple of comments I recently received at a HS reunion about which I just sigh:  When asked what I do for a living, one person said that she learned medical terminology and ShortHand in the past, realized shorthand is no longer used and thought medical transcription was obsolete/now fully automated.  I briefly attempted to explain what MTs do and about automated speech recognition, but she didn't seem too interested.  Another comment I received was how it would be nice to work when you want to; I didn't feel like explaining about having scheduled hours/punching in and out, TAT, production goals, etc., and just let it go...

I think the next time someone asks what I do for a living, I am going to say that somedays I am a magician, most days I'm involved in a race, and that at all times I am required to be a good interpreter!

Yes, she had post partum depression AND post partum psychosis. I posted on this a while back, and
it explained the two. The psychosis actually develops after the depression. Scary stuff.
ok I went back and re-read your post.

You have 2 toddlers who need daycare.

You have a teen (the childsupport)

You have $350 roomie but that + disappears with his costs of living there.  and I would be scared to count on it.

You have $9500 CC bill which that payment is probably about $200 a month.

At $42,000 that is not solid money - it is PT monies.

1.  Can the BF come up with his probable court-ordered child support of at least $1000 a month?

2.  Do you make car payments?

3.  How much is your student loan payment - and for how much longer?

4.  Do you have a degree in something?  Should you stay in transcription?

5.  Can you make the house payments if the BF finks out on the child support in 2 years if your 16 yo moves out and gets married and doesn't attend college?

6.  You will be at an expensive time in your life with the 1 and 2 YO/ who will then be 3 and 4 years old by then and still needing day care.

7.  A house is expensive upkeep.  And much energy.

I agree with the others.  Don't jump the gun here.  Take care of one thing at a time.  Get yourself into a situation where you won't be stressed if there comes a blip in the road - like you break your arm - or the car tears up - or you need an emergency root canal - one of the kids breaks a leg and you need to stay home.  There are a million things.

I would rent, move BF out, get childsupport started from him to see how that goes, re-look at the budget.

when the FT job comes around, and if you feel it is the one for you and they are good for the money, then look at the house.  You must live for you, not the 16 YO.

By then you will have your FT monies coming in, the child support coming in, you will know what your extra income is, you will have all your insurances in place and leave time built up, and a house may be good by then.  Also, the market is overvalued right now.  They are saying people buying right now may be buying things that won't be worth what they paid for them in a year.

Do you have any family you could stay with at all for 6 months.  You need some breathing space, girl.

Again, good luck.

First off, go back and read your post sm
and grade yourself. Start out by paying attention to what needs to be capitalized in your post. I see at least 11 areas. I see a word that should be plural instead of singular. One sentence is not a complete sentence. Maybe you need to go over these sections in your course again. They are generally in the very beginning.
There was a post here awhile back about sm

someone using a heated keyboard -- that might help.  I have used the typing gloves before when my hands/wrists were flaring up, but I generally found they slowed me down a bit.  However, if your fingers and hands are cold and stiff, that slows you down too, so it might be worth it.  Hand-Eze is the only brand name I can think of, but I am sure there are lots of others to choose from.  You can usually find them at places that sell craft supplies, maybe a little less expensive than the sites on the web.  Good luck.

Here's a post from way back in 2004 (sm)

If we still cannot get an organized group of MT's to write and innundate the senate and congress with letters or some kind of petition than we should all give us and do what a poster said "just give up tilting at windmills"...are you ready to give up?  (PS the first address for the San Francisco Gate is still active and is the full article.  The second address for the Deccan Herald is no longer active. Read the San Francisco Gate article and weep!)

Hello _______,

As a born and raised American I am appalled at the number of jobs that are being moved overseas by US based companies, all claiming that they need to cut costs. This is hurting the US Economy and boosting the economy for countries such as India and Pakistan. I am a manager with a medical transcription company and our industry has been infiltrated by these other countries. There is growing concern in the medical community regarding HIPAA and overseas transcription, since HIPAA is a US based law and not international. It concerns me greatly that the health care providers that are sending information out of this country are not informing patients of this, and the fact that patient names, social security numbers and other identifying data is made available to people in these other countries.

Recently a medical Transcriptionist in Pakistan threatened the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center that if they didn't pay her off a large fee then she would disclose these patient medical records. Here's their newspaper article that explains in detail what happened:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/10/22/MNGCO2FN8G1.DTL

In addition to that situation, a medical transcriptionist company in Ohio had 2 of their employees in India threaten to publish medical records on the internet because of a pay dispute:

http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/nov04/c2.asp

I would appreciate your consideration in supporting or initiating legislation to keep jobs in America, not only for the medical transcription and coding business, but for all American jobs. I would suggest that stiff taxes be placed on any American business that sends work out of this country to the point that it would cost them more money to send work out of this country than leaving it here. In addition, I would like to see the HIPAA laws expanded to state that medical records may not leave this country due to patient confidentiality and security reason.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Sometimes I post things I wish I could go back and delete.
Although, I think when people say things like what you mentioned, they are speaking out of fear. Of course, everyone wants to be married, they just don't want the heartaches. And some of us are no good at picking the right person for us. However, I understand when you are just having a bad day and need to vent and I hope others understand that too. I do wish the best with your marriage and family. Take care.
Thank you for taking the time to post back....sm
I'm sure he must be depressed, and my brother also. I'll bring up the subject to him and see if I can make him see that they are really needing some outside help here, more than we can do just as family members.  You bring up a lot of good points.  Thanks again.
You better go back and read the ORIGINAL post again -
What a self-righteous
be-** ch.
and all that is in your post to back that up is a red face for reasoning?
??
This is the last time I will post on this subject or back to you beacuse
you are most definitely a very unhappy person who needs something to fuss about...... It can never only cost 7.5% more because your social security and taxes are based on how much you make. When you add your IC income it is different for everyone, depending on what tax bracket they are in, and yes it cost me more. Even if it were 7.5% I would still say it is not worth it for ME but that is my opinion - you are free to have yours.

P.S. I do fill out my own taxes because I also refuse to pay anybody more than it is worth to do them when I can go buy Turbo Tax and fill them out myself. If you really want to see the difference, fill out your Taxes without your IC income and then put it in and see the difference!
Fine. Be sure to post back here in a year and tell me about her at-home job. nm

To adminstrators. Love your new format. Could you please back the actual time of the post.
Love the little smiley faces that can be added too.  And the print.  Just bring back the time along with the date of post if possible.
Bringing the head lice post back up. This has been going around at my daughter's school.
Saturday, after having been checking her head all week, found lice on her head. Did the treatment on her, on me, DH and other daughter, just in case. Only youngest and myself apparently had them. Got rid of the lice, now need to deal with the eggs. No problem with daughter's head because I am meticulous and have been checking daily and removing anything I find. My problem is my own head. Oldest daughter tried to look through, but she had hard time, though she tried. Husband "I don't see anything", so not much help. I can't look at my own head, so my dilema is how do I get the eggs off my own head and keep them from rehatching? Any help/advice would be appreciated. Never gone throught his before.
With short arms, I need chair with shallow seat, good back support and high back. Want arm rests
:+
OK! I'm glad you're back down here. Now don't go back up there and read those evil posts ag
Okay? But I have to leave you now, sadly. Thousands of noble dictating doctors are anxiously awaiting my help with their "dictations"....They're all loading up on chips, drinking lots of soda so they can burp, and then have to go to the bathroom...You know the routine! Off I go to earn some pennies!! But, truly, I am thankful that I have a job!
PS.. It apparently worked..I heard back and already submitted the paperwork back.

I'm not sure how many people they are hiring but you shouldn't stress too hard over it. Do the best you can.

Should just post all their open positions in one post and only be allowed to post one of those a day
nm
I would not do them back to back - I have done 2 and 3 jobs at the same time -- all PT - sm
It is possible to do of course but you will burn out fast. Now I do one almost FT (about 30 hours a week) and the other is about 8-10 hours a week-- I still get beat doing that and that is w/o set hours. I find that the older I get the harder it is to work late and I am only 40! But a mid afternoon 30-minute cat nap helps a lot in order to keep going on busy days.
How do you set your computer back 1 day. I messed something up and need to go back 1 day.

Yes, you get back to work now. Go back to
some routine, and it does start to hurt less. I know  And remember, she is still there at work with you. Always will be. I figure at this point I have a whole herd of loved dogs under my desk each day - along with a couple horses, hamsters, parakeets, rabbits...If only I could see them - must be quite a happy zoo! But I know they are all there I sense their love.
Yes, I tried to post same last night about 10 times, and it won't let me post.
I used to breed lab puppies (please no activist flames)! I had a champion female white Canadian lab, and people would be on a list for years if by chance I bred her, which I did twice, and so that I could continue her line.  Anyhow, she's my sweet Skye who passed away 2 months ago? At any rate, we had the same problems with kids in the "hood" who wanted to come over and play once the puppies were old enough to be exercised daily and played with.  At first I thought, how cute, right? Puppies and little kids - what better picture! Well, the majority of kids were adorable, but there were always 1 or 2 sick ones who would smack the pups, smash and hold their heads in the dirt (a real common thing, but I don't know why - psychiatrist anyone).  At any rate, I finally had to ban the whole group due to the 1 or 2 creeps, had to call the police, the whole 9 yards, and that's EXACTLY what the police officer told me - next thing is there will be poison meat or a donut in the yard. He told me to always go out and patrol my yard, especially alone the fence line every day before I let the dogs out, particularly at night. I went out with a flashlight.  It was about a month later, but sure enough - poison meat.  Because there were so many kids involved, we obviously couldn't pin point the exact family, but the police went and read the riot act to them all. It would stop and not happen again for a year or so, but every now and again we would find something. My dogs were NEVER out and barking, so it was nothing like that - it was just over the puppies and the cruel kids.... Not trying to freak you, but that's the way these kids and their families are.  You can really judge someone's character by ill treatment of a PUPPY, of all things. And the parents??  They sound whacked.  Please be careful.

Ah, I really meant to post that under the original post

Don't they post that information when they post the

Can't anyway. Just get them back. sm

I actually tried to dump a report today, which I never do, because it somehow got into my pool in error (not my area of expertise), but it jumped right back up at me after the next report.  So I decided to just do it.  I don't know how well I did, but I did it.  It was over 150 lines long and took me forever.  Lo and behold, 5 reports later, same guy, same type of report 145 lines. Second time around was easier and faster though.  The way I see it is that if I get negative feedback, I'll let them know that those kind of reports really shouldn't come my way.

But cherry picking for line count is just plain wrong.

I did, but then I came back to it.

The other jobs I took involved quite a bit of computer use, too.  I got tired of the office politics and other garbage, so I'm doing MT again.  Now, I prop my keyboard up with a block of wood, although you can use a telescoping keyboard drawer/shelf to do the same thing.  I have a habit of letting my wrists rest on the keyboard, so I had to modify it to get my hands into the proper position.  It might have helped if I had taken piano lessons.  LOL  The only time my wrists ache now is if I work too much, which has been the case lately.  I don't know if it would be helpful for you to try.  I've been doing data entry or some form of computer input work for 17 years now, so I'm hoping carpal tunnel or repetitive motion injury isn't definitely in my future.

Going WAY back here
It's been a long time and I'm not "up" on the lingo, but by reformatting, do you mean you re-indexed?

I would go into whatever function that is where you can re-index all files or functions and do that.

If you still have problems, it might be that a file has been corrupted somewhere. That happened to me on that program a couple times. I'm not sure if it was the dictionary, but something somewhere stopped working right and I had to reload the entire program.

Be SURE to back up your autokeys immediately just in case you have to reinstall the program.

Can I get back to you about this later?

WAY BACK WHEN
It used to be that we were treated as valued employees, treated with dignity, and actually felt like the higher-ups gave a damn about us.  Length of service meant something and those who were dependable never had to worry about running out of work.  I knew I would be taken care of.  Never did we get cheap plastic crap as a Christmas present - we got real, thoughtful presents to show their appreciation for the hard work that they knew we did.  It's pretty much like night and day - nobody gives a damn anymore about us.  It used to be the only thing I knew I could depend on to be stable in my life was my job.  Not anymore.
Yes, they could pay us better back then
because they weren't paying 2 people for one job (speaking of QA here). If you weren't a good, accurate transcriptionist, you didn't have a job.
Way back
I never heard the word at the time. It was fabulous! No turnaround time. I could shop all day and work all night. The service I worked for told me she wished she had 10 of me! Nice? Christmas parties and $100 bonuses! Flowers when a relative died. It was fun!
I think I might even go back further...
I recall using white-out and yellow-out for carbon copies (the REAL carbon copies) which had to be corrected separately. OH my... but I'm afraid I don't miss all that at all! LOL. I think it was okay to use the white-out until a couple years later, or maybe 10? Yeah, I'm old.

And 8 or 9 books? Did they even make that many back then? I can recall having a PDR and a word book that was separated into specialities. Oh, and the surgical word book. It was red. I am visualizing it now.

My form of research was more like finding the chart and going from there. Ah, but that was before production. Remember those days?

I wish I could remember the name of the first word processor I used. It was a mess!! More trouble than it was worth, but on the cutting edge of technology... and I was there!!

And here I am now, an MT dinosaur, getting ready to start using ASR...

Yeah, DixieDew, we have come a long way.

But miss it? Do you remember the noise those Selectrics made? And I complain sometimes because I can't stand the clicking of the keyboard when I have barely audible dictations.

One more thing... and please tell me if you miss this... "Standard" reports that you had to copy type instead of just having them appear on your screen with a few keystrokes. I used to HATE standard reports to the point of tears!

Okay, my ranting and reminiscing is done for now.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. :)
Come back
That Alice was bad, bad, bad. Are you and "her" coming back tonight though?
I will back you up too

I was told the same about two years ago by recruiter in Midwest.  She did not give specifics, but basically said that the full time employees would get priority if the work was low.

I wish they would come back!
No doubt Zipper, Chucky, MQLOVER, and Frankie Boy made this board alive - I would rather laugh in hysterics with their words than to listen to the same ol, same ol'!

By the way, admin confirmed it was not the same person posing as all of them!
