More like 90% are completely inept managers.
I have one currently who is good but the rest have been the pits, pits, pits.  And they're getting worse.
She is just socially inept and has to crowbar in her opinion.

Yes, McAfee (nm)
ss
My McAfee...
does this automatically. I remember paying for a "registery cleaner" a long time ago and it really is a scam. IMHO it is one of the "scare tatics" that they use to get you to buy their software. Are you sure it wasn't some kind of disguised pop-up that you got??
Maybe McAfee would have been enough
there was maybe no need to install all the other stuff, interfering and competing with McAfee.
Now, McAfee PLUS is only $ 30.-- and it's great.
I do not know why Norton should be better and nobody could give me an explanation.
Norton vs. McAfee..which best?sm
Just got a new laptop that came with McAfee..now they are offering me subscription for half price...$69.00...I've always used Norton before and wondering if there is any difference.
Did you contact McAfee??? They may
be able to help.
Are you talking about McAfee???

I don't care for McAfee, but...sm
I would recommend stepping up to the full version of AVG if the free version has been working well for you.

There's a sort of logical conundrum to the question of whether AV software is "working well" in that we don't know what we don't know. In other words, personal experience isn't enough to tell us whether our AV software is truly effective or we simply haven't been the victim of a particular virus that our software would not have caught. "Luck" looks exactly like "effectiveness" to the end user of an AV application.

It's like trying to prove a negative, in other words. What we do tend to notice is whether AV software affects the usability of our systems. Does it "get in the way", slow the system down, etc.? While these are not unimportant issues, this is not a measure of the effectiveness of AV software in detecting and preventing virus infections.

There are organizations that test AV software and post their results online. Unfortunately, there's a little catch-22 here in that such tests suffer from the same problem that the AV software they're testing has, namely the daily proliferation of new viruses that haven't yet been defined and therefore can't be tested adequately.

I can only say that I am very satisfied with McAfee..sm
The advertised claim of having caught 'viruses' by free AV might just be a manipulation of some sort.
How can a free AV system be more efficient than a paid one?
It is only logical that free AV users defend the free service.

Why would you not recommend McAfee?..nm
nm
I agree. I uninstalled my McAfee &
started using AVG years ago. McAfee was always causing problems, and I've never had any problems or viruses since switching to AVG.
Finally got McAfee COMPLETELY off my computer

www.komando.com has saved my butt a few times in the past, and though it took some time, I finally figured out where to look on that site for the answers to this problem, too.

Finally got McAfee completely removed from my computer, and was able to download a free antivirus software from PC Tools (also found on komando.com) and now feel somewhat protected.

Maybe now I can start looking into why the computer started running slow in the first place.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and I'm sure I'll be back for more help soon.

McAfee is huge bloatware. It messed up our PC.
And it's nearly impossible to remove. I had to physically remove some of the files from the registry to get it all off. Many would say "you need administrator rights to edit" but I was logged in as administrator at the time. I won't ever, EVER put any McAfee file on my computer again. It is almost definitely slowing down your computer. The best advice I can give you is to get rid of every single McAfee-related program and get AVG or Avast antivirus software instead. Not only is McAfee a big resource hog, we had viruses get through on it and Avast caught them. I try to tell everyone I know because McAfee comes bundled on computers a lot these days.
Even if McAfee shows under security, I'd dump it. sm
A lot of the ISPs nowadays have incorporated Spyware protection, spam protection, popup blockers, etc., so much of what McAfee claims to do is simply not needed. It bogs down your computer and takes up space, and it is next to impossible to get rid of with a simple uninstall. There are two great free antivirus programs, Avast and AVG, though I would spring and buy the profession version if the PC is used for work. Run those in conjunction with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware scans and a good firewall, and you should be adequately covered. Do a Google search for a good "techie" forum and ask some questions there. They can give you good advice about each program's pros and cons and what the best combination is for you. Or even call someplace like Geek Squad, though they might charge for advice.

My advice to anyone would be don't add anything to your computer without fully researching it. I speak from experience because I once downloaded a antivirus/antispyware program that was heavily advertised on TV and it ended up crashing my computer. It was a virus itself! Lesson learned the hard way, I tell ya! I now research any new software much like I'd research a company before working for them.
I agree that McAfee slows down the system, but
only when the scanning is in process, especially when starting. But I doubt that McAfee and Norton are less safe than a free download.
This has no logic.
I subscribe McAfee already for years and I NEVER got a virus.
McAfee checks every website with green
check marks if ok and puts a question mark in case it is questionable and a red exclamation mark if dangerous. So we, the paying subscribers, know which one to open and which not.
I did not get an answer from TechSupport why he/she does not recommend McAfee. What reasons do you have that you do not care about McAfee?
Apparently not
I am personally becoming very sick of it. I think I am done with this company. I have had it to say the least.
Apparently
the "brain" part is still working, if that is all  he can think about.  Men are a trip.
I apparently I still have my job.

I just came inside from doing chores, settled down to my machine here to do another day's work, and have 2 instant messages sitting here from my bosses saying they got my e-mail, know I'm tired, but put 'stats' in my cue that needs to be done up right away.

Either it's a cruel joke or the company really is testing me to see exactly what my breaking point is.

I appreciate the advice and the ears.  Thank you for lending me them.

Apparently not.

Apparently they are (sm)
Any teacher/counselor/whatever who would tell a student that work "used" to be done offshore and makes it sound as if outsourcing is a thing of the past is either deliberately lying to that student or is sadly misinformed.

The part about the quality being so poor that it has to be edited before being returned to the client is accurate, but that hasn't stopped anything.

There are, of course, some jobs that have been brought back to the U.S. but unfortunately, U.S. MTs are now being asked -- make that EXPECTED to work for the same low wages as offshore MTs.

Between outsourcing and VR, I couldn't in good conscience suggest that anybody embark on a career as an MT at this point in time. There was a time when this seemed like a solid career choice - but that time has passed.

Anyone who is considering signing up for an expensive course needs to decide who to believe - someone who's been there and has 0 to gain financially from them...or someone who wants their money.
Apparently
an MT who may or may not be Indian...REALLY defensive if you read the entire thread when just a simple question was asked.

Yep, WAY too defensive and won't let it drop. I'd just laugh and say 'no' if someone asked me if I were in India. This one's practically frothing at the mouth which is kinda weird.
Apparently so!

Having been accused of being blunt, insensitive, racist, etc,  I thought I got where she was coming from.  And frankly, I don't remember seeing an LOL in her posts, though I admit to not having read all of them.   I just think it's silly to slam somebody, then add the LOL.  It's like taking a swing at someone, then saying "No hard feelings?"

Live and learn.  I've added to the list of posters whose posts I no longer open (it now numbers 2.)  Actually, it's kind of fun to read responses to someone's posts without having read the original, and having to guess at the content from the reactions.

I seriously considered it myself because

my former coworker kept telling me how great it was.  She planned on getting rich off of it and retiring by the time she was 35.  She was too busy promoting her "home business" on company time and the company computer to even get her work done at her regular job.  She's still not rich or retired.

Also, there are a lot of negatives out there regarding Ameriplan.  There is one dentist in my entire state that accepts Ameripan cards.  No other medical providers will even consider it.  One good post by someone trying to sell Ameriplan doesn't negate lawsuits, BBB complaints, and thousands of people who weren't given refunds when they requested.  I would never stand behind a company that wasn't ethical and honest with people.

Believe me, I understand what it's like to work hard and still live paycheck to paycheck.  However, "Posting advertisements or solicitations of business" and "spamming" are against MTstars terms of service, which you agree to when using this site.  Selling the discount cards (and/or recruiting people) is what you were trying to do, so be honest here.

Have you considered......
Where I work, there are a people who actually work part time, at 30 to 35 hours per week so that they do not have to meet the high line count for full time. If benefits is not an issue for you and you are paid by the line maybe you should consider 30-35 hours a week instead of 40. I am sure you would not loose much money and making rate would not be a problem because you would have that big gap i.e part time rate is 5,100 and full time rate is 10,200 that would mean your only required to make 5,100 a pay period even if you are 30 to 35 hours a week......then you would'nt have to work so hard and you could have more time with you son. From what I have heard from other MTs...it was actually a relief for them to have to go part-time because they did not have all the pressure anymore.....it is something to think about. However, if insurance/benefits is an issue than I could see how this might be difficult.

You might also want to try getting on earlier, ie. 4 am to 7am and then once your son is off to school get back on and complete your shift. I wish you luck. I am sure something will work out.
Have you considered
asking your company if you could copy someone's? You wouldn't happen to be working on ExText and using the ESP would you?
It's not anything I considered, but I just...

Googled scoping and came up with quite a few hits that should be able to give you some info.

re: anybody ever considered
A lady I know is married to an HVAC man, and she got a general contractor's license. She makes money off it, but subcontracts all the work out on building jobs. Her husband does the HVAC part.
Anybody ever considered

becoming a plumber or some other type of construction?  My husband and I are looking at things we could do together.  Don't even know if a woman could do the job and I'm 54 so might be too old to cut the mustard and been doing MT for 9 years so out of shape.

Is 4 cpl considered too low?

Is 4cpl, 65 character line including spaces and hard returns, very low for a new graduate?  I've been told that this is exceptionally low.  BUT, with companies offering MTs with 5+ years of experience 7-9 cpl I thought it was a fair wage.

Am I wrong?  Am I working for a MT 'sweatshop'?  The accounts are not difficult, and no ESLs.

Now after hearing some people tell me I am working for peanuts I am wondering if I need to find a different job.  I like these accounts, but I also want a fair wage.  I was told we'd renagotiate pay when I got off full QA.   Am I being taken advantage of?

I have considered that myself but have yet -sm
to find a product that I can get my hands on cheaply (i.e. wholesale) in order to re-sell at a good profit, not 1 or 2 dollars. I have 2 boxes of stuff right now that I plan to put on ebay, old kid toys basically, books, etc. Don't care much about making a bundle just want to de-clutter my house some, one man's junk is someone else's treasure and all that jazz. I have toyed with the wholesale designer clothing scene (returns/imperfects) but it requires connections and basically buying a tractor trailer worth of clothes for $5K or more, nothing to enter lightly. As with most risky ventures you have to have money in order to make money (i.e. stock market). But in regards of gettign out of MT I have just gotten my CDL for bus driving, have 10 more hours of training (paid too at $8/hr) then I can substitute drive for my county, yeah! Within a year I should have my own route (don't have to use my own gas either to get to work, nice, they have a shuttle pick you up at home), work 2-3 hours a day and get $60 a day for my trouble, a lot better than I make doing MT. Great thing is I get paid 12-months a year and make about $1K a month which is not much less than I make now and I work a lot more than 3 hours a day. I still plan to do MT but cut back some so I can reclaim my life a bit. I will still have freedom to do what I want during the day and have a well paying PT job (which they call FT and it has benefits too, health insurance and 401K). So it is an interesting alternative for me and will give me a steady income and I will have job security too unless I have a ton of accidents for some reason, but really don't expect that to happen as I am a good driver. In time may apply to the USPS for driving the smaller mail trucks (not tractor trailers, different CDL class), have to get 1 year experience before I can consider that. Just looking at my options for the future as my DH wants to retire in 8 years at 55 (who doesn't?)(I'm 7 years younger by the way) so I need a job with good health insurance IF we have to change insurance that is, something I do not want to do since we have phenomemal coverage. Doubt this helped you at all but maybe it will get you thinking of other avenues other than ebay. Good luck!
Apparently so, since there was no name for that post...my, my...
you certainly are one touchy little thing, eh?  I wasn't meaning to reply to you, as obviously you already have all the answers.
apparently, WE are the stronger sex

Although I do not watch Survivor, from what you describe, the women were stronger than the men, correct?

Face it, women are way stronger than men. Why do ya think we have the babies? Cause the pregnancy alone would KILL a man!

I love men, though, weakness and all! (Please, I am just kidding, ok!)

Apparently my vision is gone after

looking at a computer monitor all day.  There is supposed to be a MQ board with a link to the left???  Would someone have mercy on me and tell me if they see it because I sure don't see it.  Thanks!

Why is the MT's fault? Apparently he
is being allowed to do that by his supervisor.

It isn't any MT's fault -- given opportunity, then those who really want the money will make it.

I know that for myself I work my schedule. I do work extra quite a bit of the time -- at the request of my supervisor. They ask me specifically to work more.

Surely, you are not suggestion that I say, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I just can't work any extra. You see, MT Mary Poppins will get huffy because she will think I'm stealing her lines and then I will be called a greedy MT so I should forfeit money to be made for myself because of how SHE feels." ???

If you TRULY think that is reasonable, you are going to be miserable as long as you are in this job.

If I am asked to do more, I will do it as long as I am working in this business. It's NOT unfair to anyone. It is my opportunity to make money. Nothing is unfair about that.

Apparently, they are doing away with that. see link
http://www.snopes.com/business/redeem/subway.asp
Apparently. I have some I have had to divide
xxx
Even though this apparently is not the same company that SM

the original poster works for, I recognize my own company in this post, and I agree with what you are saying. Because of something that happened with my primary account a couple of years ago, I also have looked at others but have found no better offer than the deal I have with this company - have even tried out a few.  I now know that I need to concentrate on the job I have, rather than looking for another one.  I can make my own production somewhat better, as you have, just by my attitude and just dealing with things on a day to day, or, rather, report by report basis and just rolling with the punches.  It's the overall picture that counts.

Thanks for your post. I enjoyed reading it, especially after the last few months when there had been a few negative threads, if you remember.  :)

Apparently some do, we all have jobs!
x
Apparently he doesn't
1. Nothing.
2. Nothing else.
apparently not too bright the guy is. He is
also cheap. Making someone drive 5 hours is a tad cheap. He should invested in a flight if you live anywhere near an airport or a train. If you are as old as you say, he certainly was not doing you a favor :) (I am only playing with you). Maybe he was hoping you would keel over on the way.

In all seriousness though, someone like this, his personality will come out in court to be just like he is...a/k/a Archie Bunker though it is my guess that Archie might have been a tad more loveable.

Go get him!
For the network either, apparently.
BTW, I think it sucks that he left his wife and poor little ill baby for his new co-star. Glad it was canceled!!!
Apparently you did not read everything
They are still there. read well into the posting about what's for dinner, and I mean all of it. It is pretty sad when someone has to criticise what someone else is having for dinner and make rude comments about it. Read also down further to the posting about what they perceived to be a low paying job and read what some of the posters have to say about hiring MTs that have children and how unprofessional they are. It is enough to make your blood boil and I agree with the above poster. Negativity breeds negativity. People get defensive when they are being criticised and lash back with words. Just read all of the below carefully, and you will see what you missed.
you need therapy apparently
So you are telling me you don't think I have a great deal of experience because I've done this for 18 years???? I honestly don't know why I am stooping to your level but your nastiness is not warranted on here. How dare you and you know what YES, I have done this for 18 years so that pretty much does MAKE ME AN AUTHORITY!! I would go toe to toe with you ANYDAY! Now get off your soapbox and go harrass some other innocent person. You are exactly the kind of person a supervisor hates to have in their pool of transcriptionists and you are probably mad at me because I am an Editor and you can't cut the mustard as one. I would say you have a bad attitude because some editor at your job probably picks on your work daily. I see US MTs every day who don't even know how to spell English words much less medical ones. So just get off the nurse thing, nobody said she was going to work for your company or taking your job so just get over it. I also never said anywhere in any of my posts that she had the qualifications, I just asked a question......
Apparently, I cannot spell either...lol. NM
NM
Apparently you don't understand what I was saying
there is a big difference between constructive and riding someone. If you sent one IM right behind another behind another to where a Transcriptionist is totally unable to work, that hinders on harassment and it is not allowed in any work place. I love my job and I do get feedback but it is not in a way that weights me down, emails, never onslaught of IMs. One transcriptionist got an apology from the QA person who rode them and even a letter from the manager of the company saying this would not happen anymore and taking immediate action to correct what had been going on. by the way, my QA has never fallen below 98-99. You have just picked something up and ran with it thinking against all QA. Know what you speak of before you speak.
Apparently you don’t understand too well
never called you a crack head, says it sounds the same, there is a difference, sounds like, same as, understand? I am glad people find you inspiring if they want to look at someone losing everything because just couldn’t make a go of it, like I said and will say again sounds like the praise I hear when someone getting off crack, oh well I just screwed up my life and my kids but now I am in recovery so give me a big round of applause and kudos because I am starting over. Your post said you got so down you lost everything and I said I just do not understand how people call that a survivor??? What did you survive? I just think you do what you have to do and unless you are laid up in bed unable to move or get around, then you work and make a living for your family and do not let things stop you in maintaining a home. I just don’t see making a hero out of people who lose homes, jobs, etc by their own hands.
You apparently are not aware of

in this business for 25 years.  Used to be able to charge higher rates, but partly because of offshoring, that is no longer possible.  Raise your rates, and the work will be sent offshore instead.  I see a lot of MTs on this board proclaiming what how much they should get and how much the MTSO should charge, but reality is different.  My accounts are all 14 and 15 cpl.  I pay my MTs 10, 11 and 12 cpl depending on the account.

Even a hospital MT supervisor told me that their MT department was getting 18 cpl for their MTs to do clinic work for the doctors at the hospital and the doctors decided they didn't want to pay that much and went with a cheaper company rather than paying 18 cpl.

What you say sounds good; but it's not reality.

apparently you've
most of what this person spoke of made little to no sense - i've lost more than one job to outsourcing and it's not a nice thing to have happen to you. I still do not have any idea what this person is talking about - HIPPA??? what???? if someone could explain it to me in English then I would gladly and respectfully reply. Otherwise, I stand by my first post. Call me mean-spirited or whatever you want - but someone from India trying to correct an American problem - that's a joke. Perhaps they should run for President and "fix" everything. But then Americans would have nothing to complain about.
Apparently it is, who knew?

Hi ya!

Haven't been on the board in a few days.

Yes, my friend in CA says that she heard Brooklyn was the new destination to go to according to "Budget Travel" and I have actually ran across tourists looking at maps in the streets of Brooklyn. New York Magazine now lists restaurants in Brooklyn along with the usual ones in Manhattan. I wish it hadn't caught up, real estate for one is out of control here.
