How does one go about getting a raise? IC working for pennies needs more $$$

I have been working with my company as an IC for over a year, want to make more $$$$. Make 3 cpl editing and 8 cpl typed.  The first time I asked for a raise I was making 7 cpl and owner said they could give me a penny more for the typed lines but no more for editing, since that would leave the editors with only a penny per line?  I like the flexibility and freedom of working with them and thought it was a trade off but feel unappreciated and underpaid...

thanks for any replies...

made pennies working on-site-sm
but I live in an extremely rural area were the pay is generally lower across the board for any type of job.  I also drove an hour each work as well, to the next town over. Around years ago the transcriptionists in my hometown were making 7.50/hour.  So I am pretty proud of my 9 cpl job.
Anybody else not feel like working today?
You know how you're sleep deprived, then when you catch up on your sleep, you feel even more tired than before?  Ugh.  I slept for 10 hours last night.  I've got a killer headache.  All the work coming up on my account today is lousy.  I'd rather be doing anything else right now.  Time to set the timer and get 'er done.
Working for a national, do you ever feel you can't ask for

an increase in pay because you're concerned you'll price yourself right out of a job?

I make 9 cents a line IC.  I get my line count pumped up to where I want by hard work on the accounts I'm working.  I get pretty efficient in that account and then I get pushed to different work where I have to start all over again and work really hard to make a decent line count.  It's seemed to happen again, so I'm thinking about requesting a pay increase but then I start thinking that I'm already at a "better than most" pay from what I've seen posted here and elsewhere.  What do you think?  I'm interested in opinions if anyone will share.  Thanks.

Does anyone else feel like you're always working
i feel like i'm typing constantly!! my whole life is type type type type type
Actually, no don't feel weird working at home.. sm
You make a life outside of MTing too. Your message was "who smiles at everyone way too much and tries too hard to make conversation." I'd say, how nice, how kind, how interesting to be around. As opposed to the years of office toods (attitudes), back-biting all the time in offices, no thanks, no thanks ever again. Just tell others you meet you work at home making a living and look at their eyes (they wish they could too, oh yes) the longing for peace and some measure of tranquility. You CAN be a very interesting person to be around.
Do you think you would feel isolated working at home?sm

I do have children and I have worked at home for the last 7 years, the whole time they were both infants.  I have one in school now and one in preschool.  You are right.  There are benefits to being able to pick them up or staying out with them, and I hadn't really thought about the costs of clothing, gas, etc. - good point.  Thanks for your input.

anyone feel weird working at home all the time?
Who smiles at everyone way too much and tries too hard to make conversation?
I get less done when my husband is laying in the bed - I feel cheated if I am working while he is re
x
I know how you feel. Working at home can be distracting, just having other things on our minds (sm)
like dirty dishes in the sink, piling up laundry, a bed right across the hall to take a nap in. What works for me is tune everything out including internet distractions and e-mails, phone calls. No more than a 10 minute break every couple of hours, 30 minutes lunch time and just hit those keys. The end result can be pretty rewarding.
One week of working on a new platform and I do not feel it is user-friendly
Editing itself is not bad. It is the documentation of the changes I made, I think for purposes of feedback to MT, which I have to do on Word (outside of the platform) that is driving me crazy and is eating up a lot of time. I do not think I am being productive. I am paid an hourly rate but I am almost embarrassed with my production. I think doing QA without going the through the MTing using the same platform presents a lot of difficulty. Is it too early to decide whether this is a good fit for me?
YES!! Love 'em! Lots of fun, doesn't feel like working out. :)

How do you guys pinch your pennies
Anything, how to save on toiletries, can you mix and match what you use for your hair as well as dish soap, split the toilet paper into two separate sheets?  I absolutely hate using coupons because I end up buying what I don't need just because I have a coupon so those are out.  Any under cover stores to find cheap scented candles?  Cheap produce?  I think if I could cut back it would save me a lot of stress on where my money is going, it just leaves my pocket so easily these days. A way to get all the food groups in without breaking the bank because thats where most of my money disappears, toiletries and groceries.  Advice needed!
i remember having to roll pennies
to buy gas for the car, and it wasn't 30 dollars. Gas was about 1.50 at that time, but doesn't matter how much it is if you don't have the money!  Another time, I had a 25 cent coupon good towards some cleanser...the store clerk forgot to take it off my grocery order, stating that "it's only a quarter!"  I only replied, "I hope you never have to find out just how much a quarter is."  Unfortunately, I found out a few years later that, yes, she found how much a quarter meant.
Received one also -- saving my pennies

Got my yesterday in the mail.  Thought that they changed their name.  And I thought it was personally addressed to me.  Don't know how they got my name and my business name as I do not belong to the organization.   Anyway gotta get my reservation in by December 20th or so.

Why do they expect perfection for pennies?...
When you work on production to make a decent check you have to push it, and you have all these horrible accents, why, then, do they expect miracles?  Maybe if I had an hourly salary.
physicians pinching pennies
while making over $100K a year (after insurance premiums), for a service that is tax deductable.... they really dont have a clue...
Even if they pass, how can they do the work? They will make pennies an hour and
zzzzzz
They wish LOL.. I love to pay pennies to cheap to play anything else. I just figure they want us to
Things we do for fun!!! Now, you know why I have to work while I travel.. pay for the trip.
instead of outsourcing Wal-Mart is "importing" illegal aliens to work for pennies

if you feel like that after 12 years, and I feel like that after six months
what hope is there?
I feel people who feel like this post
needs to a) either be a stay at home mother and not work or b) realize that she is no queen bee and I could care less about a degree. What company out here that you know of compensates for having a degree? Means nothing to them. Your working and being there when they assign/need/require/whatever is what you should do IF YOU WANT A JOB in this field, otherwise get out and do something else or become that babysitter.
You get more working the evening or night shifts and working w/o benefits. And producing like a mad

Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping.  I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes.  I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this.  Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time.  But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course.  I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot.  My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon).  Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day.  I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change.  Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.
Working holidays? Out shopping in stores where someone IS working

that holiday you refuse to work?  Grocery stores, food joints & seems any store is open on holidays and you expect them to be fully staffed, so why shouldn't we?

Yes, I took off for the first time on Christmas day, in 18 years and it was great, but I worked Christmas eve and this whole past weekend.

Someone has to do it!

No need to feel badly for me - feel badly for an adult who has no control of his/her own life!
I hope these people didn't produce any daughters! Bad, bad example!
working IN A HOSPITAL is different than working at home.
Someone can steal you identity from the internet if they want to. Why would you go to the time and trouble to jeopardize a job that requires some level of skill to steal someone's identity or medical records? You could get a job as a retail clerk and get info easier than going through the testing required to become an MT.
Somehow working at home translates into not really working
My in-laws are the worst. Whenever they plan something last minute and my husband says that I had to work, they say, "but she works at home!". When I one time mentioned I had a "schedule" and basically punch a clock and work full time, I don't think they believed me. They will sometimes call mid-day during the week if they are in the area to see if I want to go for lunch, etc! The best is, my husband doesn't make all that much money, so where is it coming from, the money fairy? I am ready to strangle someone! So I know how you feel and I'm sorry it upset you. You are not alone.
I daydream about NOT working while I'm working.

There are so many other things I need and want to get done.  I've been working way too hard lately, and summer is just slipping by again.  Well, I'm outty.

I know how sad you must feel
Yes, you will love her forever, and someday you will be able to think of the good times you had with her, and you will be able to laugh.
I know how you feel. :)

Don't feel bad!
It took me nearly a year to even find out if I had passed just before they went to the instant results system.
Don't feel bad...
When you take a position with any company, up front ask them if you will be working on a "ver batim" account. If so, don't take the position. Keep looking. Someone will appreciate your intelligence and knowledge somewhere! Good luck, and please know that you're not alone!!!
I feel the same as you...
My account does not allow me any normals. I am to leave a blank and they fill in the standard. I'm also a CMT and been at this for 30 years. I feel I'm doing something wrong when I hear all these 300-400 counts. I average maybe 200 per hour on a good day. I know some of my problem is having to look up referring doctors, but I can't imaging doing 300-400 lines on a consistent basis per hour! Thank you for your post. At least I know I'm not alone!
I feel for you
Last November I fell from a ladder, grabbed it with my right hand and severed nerves in 2 fingers, since I was at home, had home owner's which paid me a little and had AFLAC thru my job which helped, finally about to get back to normal but the last 6 months have been pure heck, good luck.
I feel that way every day. sm

I just take a break every 2-3 hours and take the dog for a walk or exercise or something.  Sometimes, I run up and down the stairs or just go and sit out on my deck for a few minutes to get some fresh air.

Not sure it is menopausal symptoms as I am younger than the age.  For me, it is my personality trait.  I am a type A personality.

I feel like...
I am just having the very life sucked out of me!
Now I don't feel so alone
Well, at least none of us are alone in the work all the time boat. I guess that is some consolation.
Enough so we don't feel

like a hooker on the street paying our "pimp"!  All the MTSOs need to review their overhead and cut out unnecessary expenses and overpaying their CEOs.  It is like the government spending $6,000.00 for a toilet.  Look at the UN who is wanting to borrow the money from the U.S. to refurbish the UN building.  Donald Trump has been in meetings with Congress and it is a very, very interesting thing to watch.  The UN wants to set aside $431 million dollars just in contingencies; Trump said that the contingencies should be no more than $1 million to $2 million at most.

Basically, if the MTSOs had to live like many of us live, I'm sure they would be able to cut their waste and extravagance, don't you think?

Okay now I feel bad. I know I sit here in
my own little world with my family of 8 not having much time for the news and such. But really cannot believe I haven't heard this. How sad. He was a great man. When I did get to watch the news he was the one I watched. May God bless him and his family!
I feel sorry for you
This too shall pass.  Tomorrow will be a better day.
you have every right to feel anyway you want...
this is just the way I feel. My life has been changed with this knowledge I just acquired, and I wanted to share it.

growing up on a farm, in the country, I am also aware of the local slaughterhouse, and even in the bible (old testament) how God commanded the slaughter of tens of thousands of cattle/ox, or whatever they were, DAILY - never could figure that one out (said the smell of burning flesh was pleasing to him or something ??)

BUT, just me, I cannot bear the thought of eating meat from a stressed animal dying in agony...I would think that has to be passed on to us, somehow, and also as you mentioned the growth hormones and antibiotics, and who knows what (some cows are fed other dead cows cut up), ick.

In my humble opinion, as far as peta, I do not think animals have 'rights' and I am just not the 'fanatic' type I guess. I do think as a member of the human race, there has to be a more humane way to kill these animals.

It is disturbing how easy it is for us to 'ignore' it.

Like in the video, it mentions how schizophrenic it all is, and how it goes on all day, every day, not far from where we live...
Anybody else feel this way?
I am so tired any more and I think I hate my job.  Every day same thing.  Between the lack of money for doing this thankless job, the way this company I work for treats me, the constant cherry-picking that I have to go through on a daily basis, I need a break.  Can someone tell me ONE company that appreciates hard working MTs and is good to work for PLEASE.  Thanks.
I am so sorry you feel this way
there are companies out there that are fair and good to work for.
Anyone else feel that when they have to
drive anywhere on the roads it's like driving in a Nascar race? I had 3 close calls today because of people not looking or seeing me in my lane and trying to merge into my vehicle. They try and zip in and out of traffic. They drive like maniacs yet I still see the same cars at the next stop light when I get there. Waiting for the flag to come down and yell "we have a winner" some days.
I know how you feel ...
My son's best friend was killed Monday in a motorcycle accident. He was only 16. Of course, we are extremely close - our families.

I haven't taken anything to any of their homes yet. I have sent a plant for the service tomorrow. I will make a nice memorial to his youth group. I plan to wait about 2-3 weeks, when things have settled down and all the items brought have disappeared. I'm sure his mother won't feel like cooking for a while -- then I'm taking a complete dinner over, maybe once a week until I know they are doing better.

I have also written a letter to my state legislators in his memory, asking for some changes in legislation that may have prevented this death.

My oldest son is 20 and his best friend was killed a year ago on a motorcycle as well. I'm handling this situation the same as the other with a plant, memorial to the youth group, and a few meals afterwards.
I know how you feel..
I am so discouraged. I am considering cutting my losses and moving on. This had turned into a cut throat operation. The employee is no longer treated like a human, just take the crap and keep your mouth should attitude. It is pretty sad that this company has turned into this type of operation. What is really sad is any company that would push the issue of line count quota and not quality....MTs will be so worried about getting quota that there will be no time for proofreading. SAD SITUATION.
I know how you feel
I took several tests like that. Actually the company that I now work for gave me a foreign dictator (very hard)for my test, and I have never typed for a foreign dictator and I have been there almost four months.
I feel so sorry for everyone there and wish there was
more I can do, but I think the schools are doing all they can. If the students don't have phone service, then the school can't call them either so that doesn't solve the issue. At least if they post a number, then hopefully the kids are out of the places now that are still out of power and have made it to family's home or a shelter and can call them.
I feel the same way
Only I'm really pathetic...my youngest just started half-day kindergarten and I'm missing her! I have a 21-year-old, and 18-year-old who just started college..and then I have my 5-year-old.  She was born with hydrocephalus and is shunted. Doing great though..just like a normal kid except that we did have a rapid and no-warning shunt failure a month ago which involved a Medflight and surgery, etc.  I've spent every day with her since the day she was born..and even though she's only going half days right now, I'm really missing her during that time. I know that I'll adjust..and I am happy that she is growing up and able to go and spend the time with the other kids which she just loves. I'm just really sad, too..and missing my baby girl.
I know how you feel
I can't go to the bathroom or into the kitchen (that part is probably a good thing)
