I find that exercise has greatly improved the quality of my sleep

Posted By: sm on 2006-07-15
In Reply to: Tired all the time and sleepy during the day even after an eight hour nights rest. Does anyone else - Susan

I used to need 10-11 hours of sleep to feel rested, but since I started exercising (40 minutes a day on an elliptical machine), I feel completely refreshed with 8 hours.

I don't find less quality getting my sound - sm
through my home PC. In fact, it's digital, and my phone is analog, so I think it's better. It can be altered further with different headphones, too. Of course, I still do sometimes get some pretty bad dictation quality sometimes, but it apparently comes from the equipment at the dictating hospital.
If I work when the kids sleep, when will I sleep?

I understand what you are saying about the kids will always bug me no matter what.  I just thought that if I had a job where I didn't have to hear dictation and type word for word that maybe it might be easier to block out the kids.  There are no babysitters to watch the kids around here, besides that is why I work at in home in the first place.  The kids are 2 and 5 so hopefully it will get easier.

Thanks

Hahah!a! Funny typo: not quality 'scAre', quality 'scOre'. LMAO!...nm
nm
I think that depends on the quality. Do you honestly think there is good quality just throwing every
MT on any account like they are. I also think QA has been told to not waste a lot of time on blanks so I think the hospitals are getting a lot more blanks. I certainly have more when I get in a hospital I dont know and they talk 100 miles an hour.
I thought quality was a given. Speed and quality are not mutually exclusive. sm

I maintain 99% accuracy above on my reports.  However, the original question was regarding personal preference, and I have stated mine, and I respect your opinion as well.  :-)    I do think if I was working in an office or hospital setting, the setup you mentioned might be more profitable in the long run.  There are too many interruptions and such when you have other people running in and out, phones ringing, etc.

I doubt that anyone but me really cares about the lines per hour it takes for me to do a report.  They just want an accurate report in a timely manner.  I take pride in my work, and would never just slop something out for the sake of the almighty buck.   And, as an added incentive, I work for 2 companies, and one of them has my name on each report.  I don't have a problem with it, but I did think it was a bit unusual at first.

Oh well ... I must confess that what I'd TRULY like is to be paid lots of money to just sit and play Battle Phlinx on Pogo all day long, but as of yet, no such luck.

Improved... some
I had this done about four years ago. I actually worked for the doctor who performed my procedure. Because of my anatomy and "large" uterus, I knew that it would not totally stop my periods but it has helped me have what would be called "normal" periods, lasting 3-4 days, normal/light flow, instead of 8-10 days of heavy flow. According to my GYN it does not help as much for painful periods, helps more with just the heavy bleeding. Simple procedure for me, only had to take one Wygesic that afternoon and was back to work the next morning. I could have had a hyst, but couldn't afford the "down time". Everyone is different, so don't expect miracles. Communicate with you doctor and get answers for your particular situation, but from my experience I would recommend it. Hope this helps.
I improved on it after a while, but then stayed the same.
When I first started on VR I had a really hard time because we don't have an expander on our program. I was so accustomed to typing shortcuts that I typed them when I was editing and ended up having to edit my editing.  But I've been doing it for a few months now and got used to the program, and my line production picked up a little.  I'll never be able to double or even get 60% to 70% above my usual typing rate though because I can produce a lot with typing (about 1600 lines a day).  I haven't heard of anyone producing 3200 lines a day when 100% editing. It would be different if it was like QA editing and just filling in the blanks, but sometimes this takes longer to do this than it does to type it.
I think they have improved over the years though
There are many choices out there but the ones I always look for are the ones that do not get hot to the touch, have automatic shut off even if they are tipped slightly, and also if they overheat.

I like the ones with a thermostat and fan and oscillating is nice as well. They really produce a dry heat though so having a humidifier would really help you feel warmer and you would be less likely to have it set at a higher temp., thus, costing you less if it doesn't run as much I feel.
Focus has definitely improved
since Nuance bought them out. I don't work there anymore but I had a pleasant experience and made money while looking for a place that offered benefits regardless of line count (they found me, actually). If they aren't your first choice, apply with them as well as any other company you can find. Good luck :o).
Has the job outlook improved any?

Hey, all.  I have been out of touch for a few months, getting some personal stuff out of the way, and have not been keeping up with the job market.  Now that I am ready to start looking again, I was curious about how the conditions are right now.  I was just wondering if it had improved any since, say January?  Is the economy starting to come back as it pertains to MT'ing?

Thanks in advance.

My line count improved on DQS. sm
I wonder if they are complaining about their having to select the proper account now instead of slamming in phonetic spelling, MR#, and going with that.

I like DQS's ability to give me all the parameters I need for proper selection of the proper account when the report uploads to the client. I wished I had it now because the company I work for sends out so many e-mails about improper account selections (one patient can have several active accounts because of several visits), but the program we have now does not give enough search parameters to distinguish the proper account.

The real issue may be that the transcriptionists are not use to their reports directly uploading to the client's electronic medical record.
My husband has talked to them, it has improved some but they still do it....so it stays as it is - n

Yes, thanks a lot - helped greatly!! NM

God has blessed me greatly too!!

THANK YOU ALL...Greatly APPRECIATED
Thank you SO much for the help...and Doctalk...you were GREAT...thanx for all the info. I am working on this as we speak and appreciate your giving me all the information you have....

THANK YOU ALL!
It varies greatly...
Where I work the range is from 6 cpl up to almost 12 cpl so you just don't know. I guess decent is 10 or more. Anything less is not too good in my opinion especially considering I made 8 cents per GROSS line 10 years ago which would equal I don't know maybe around 11 cents per 65 character line and again that was 10 years ago. The only profession I know of where the pay continues to go down! Thanks technology! :(
I resisted it initially. Much to my surpise, line count has improved. Lots of backspacing being do

Thanks for the info. Its greatly appreciated!nm.

Thanks for that info! Greatly appreciated!

Thank you both! Your advice is greatly appreciated. nm

Greatly depends on whether you are an IC or employee.

Katrina is going to impact us greatly in the wallets.
Prices everywhere are going to rise.  I am not an expert but I can almost feel everyone preparing to raise rates for services and products.  My biggest fear is insurance premiums.  Can anyone argue me out of this thought process?
The incidence of errors could be greatly reduced - sm
if MTs were paid in such a way that they didn't have to positively RACE through everything they type, just to make a decent line count and an honest day's wage.
Take proofreading for example: Sometimes I think we come out ahead by NOT proofreading and taking our chances with missing an error, since if we really kick butt on our line counts, it can make up for being docked. But that goes against my nature. So I slow down enough to actually SEE what I'm typing, and then go back and proofread. It produces the best-possible quality of reports, but then eliminates any chance of a bonus because I can't reach that *carrot-on-a-stick* that is dangled a bit too high (in terms of a qualifying line count) for me to reach.
THANK YOU giddy pc guru! Your help is greatly appreciated.

you should really start using expanders now! That would greatly help your production - nm

Any help on form 8829*Expenses for Business Use of your Home would be greatly

Hi All,

I was a statutory employee last year but not now.  I usually do my own taxes but am having trouble with form 8829 and am not sure if the accountant can squeeze me in at this late date.  Thought I would try here first for help.  I use my den exclusively for work (almost) and am going to take this 7% of our home as a business expense.

Under Part II... Lines 10 and 11.  Deductible mortgage interest and real estate taxes...I am going to take the entire amount on schedule A, so, hopefully, do not have to enter anything here.

line 17. Insurance.  Are we allowed to take a portion of our homeowners insurance as a deduction? I have no separate business insurance.

Line 19. Utilities.  I know I can take 7% of my electric, gas, water, garbage (I think), but what about phones? We have both cell and regular phone.  When I call, I use the regular phone for toll free numbers, but the cell phone to my boss who does not have a toll free #.

Then, I need to find the value of my home for Part III. I guess I will check home sales in the neighborhood and go by that.

Geez..sorry for sounding like such a dummy.  I can do all the other...capital gains, etc, just not sure what is allowed for home expenses.

As I say, I will try to get in to the accountant, but any advise for any of this form would be greatly appreciated.  I cannot complete schedule A until I have my Profit or Loss done, which I cannot complete until I do this form.

Thanks.

The Microsoft Wireless optical keyboard has greatly eased SM
The Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 keyboard (came packaged with wireless mouse at Staples), box says "standard keyboard + optical mouse) has greatly, greatly relieved symptoms on my elbows and wrists.

My elbows just stung before I got this keyboard. If I relax and kind of let it do what it wants, kind of get used to its touch, I really like it. It has greatly helped my elbow symptoms in particular.
exercise
Exercise helps.  After doing a few annoyingly hard reports, I go over to my stationary bicycle and ride for about three miles, then go back and do a few reports, get up and ride a few more miles.
Regarding exercise
I believe the original poster said that she had a mini-dachsund.  Those are really small, as in mini, so 30 minutes is probably more than enough exercise.
Exercise sm

Denise Austin's videos/DVDs are really good.  There are different levels, low impact, high impact, etc.  I lost 30 lbs using her videos (and with a healthy diet, of course).  I started with the low impact and eventually worked my way up to high impact.

She came out with a children's DVD and now I have my 6-year-old using it to get exercise, especially in the winter and also during rainy days.

Hope that helps!

Exercise
I noticed a few posts down that you all were discusing exercise programs.  I am looking for some exercise DVD  with mild music.  I can't stand loud, "rock-style" music.  I did locate an aerobic exercise VHS through Bob Jones University to Celtic music which is great -- but they do not offer it on a DVD.  Are there any suggestions with milder music?  Someone mentioned Pilates.  Is this to music also?
Wait until you've been there six months and if you've improved
quality and quantity, I'd say go ahead and ask.  Otherwise I'd say annually...  good luck
You could probably lose 10 lb. just from exercise. SM

Go to www.collage.com. There are hundreds of good exercise videos.

I could not get into t pep rally thing of WW.

Do something that is FUN and exercise at the same time. For myself,
I love to go for walks, rollerblading, biking, almost anything outside, etc., with my dogs, and like keeping in shape, but if I try to just "exercise" inside my home or on any machine, I simply won't stick with it. To me, "exercise" is something you have to make yourself do, whereas if it's something you consider "fun," it's something you look forward to doing and don't have to make yourself do it--it's a reward for hard work! And, congrats to you as well. (I'm still smoking).
Question: What exercise(s) do you do to keep from getting....

"secretary's butt"?????

I was warned when I started transcribing at 19 that it would appear. I'm 39 and here it is.  LOL.  But then again I do have 3 kids and a frig readily accessible 24/7

Just wondering what everyone does to stay in shape.  I need to get into a program or you'll see me on "The Biggest Loser" TV show next season.

My exercise routine
Walk to the fridge, open door (works arms), lift food (good strength training, lifting weights), put in mouth, close door, walk back to desk while lifting cup of coffee to lips.  I gave my legs and arms a good workout, also my mouth.  Transcription is hard.  But I know if I keep up my exercise routine, I will be buff.
Breathing exercise
I think I read this somewhere a long time ago, but it has always worked for me.

Inhale to the count of 3, hold it to the count of 3, exhale to the count of 3. You can gradually increase the counts.

What happens is you get focused on counting and breathing and eventually conk out.
I agree with you about the exercise sm
I've had elevated BP for 13 years due to a vascular condition and I used to work as a CNA for many years so got plenty of exercise. The minute I went to a desk job, boom. Big ankles and hands, along with a bigger rear. Started walking for 30 minutes daily and watching the salt (I can't stand it now, I never salt my food) and 8 glasses of water a day. Really does seem to help. It seems I can knock off 5 pounds by just drinking the water.
exercise programs (sm)

For about three years, I had suffered with severe asthma and allergies.  I could not ever get any of it under control.  I had to take a lot of steroids during that time and everytime I tried to get in an exercise routine it would just exacerbate my symptoms.  It turned out we had a black mold problem.  I was the only one with symptoms though.

We moved though and now I am in total recovery.  My asthma is completely under control.  I might only take it now once or twice a month, if at all (used to take it 4-6 times a day).  Doctors say I may always have it now.

I have put on a significant amount of though and really would like to get it off.  I don't feel good about myself anymore.  I eat very well and I am maintaining my current weight.  I just do not get the exercise I need.

I was really active into Taebo before all of this began, but I don't feel like I can just jump back into that right away.  I need something that would slowly work me back into shape.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help!

exercise while typing
Need a work out during your typing day?  Get a Yoga ball ans use it instead of your chair the simple act of keeping you body center on the ball will work your abs. while sitting in your chair, do leg lifts by simply lifting your heel off of the floor.  Instead of ittinf for lunch, stand up at the counter or walk while having a sandwhich or what ever it is that you eat.
Do you exercise periodically throughout
the day? Seems like an obvious suggestion but not everyone would think of it.

Been scribin for 20 years and my father suffered from carpal tunnel, so I wanted to make sure I practiced preventative measures.

I am fairly regularly flexing my wrists (make a ball and flex inward)then spread fingers wide like a jazz dancer...

Also interlock the fingers and "wiggle the fingers" around (should feel pressure on the joints -like a massage).

These are ones I just made up. You can develope your own of course, or find recommended exercises. Just use common sense and dont force anything.

One last thing that works great for me is one hand massages the other - and try putting your thumb in the webspace of the other thumb (outside of hand) and give a rounded firm pressure.

If these work for you (et al) let me know where to send a bill.

Yuk.
But do you have a LIFE? Do you get any exercise?
?
DID anyone ever sit on an exercise ball?
hello
DO any of you ever sit on an exercise ball?
Is that better?! !!
Me too, what is it? Craft or exercise? I enjoy
zz
Does anyone take dance classes for exercise?
I'd like to get out of the house once in a while and can't stand the gym.  I just don't want to be the only adult student among children.  LOL
exercise bike.. tv news
What I have been doing is get on my exercise bike and turn on CNN for 10 mins, I get my heart rate up and wake up and feel better and am more clear headed to work after that.  Its working so far! Also, worry beads are good, sugar free lemon drops, sunflower seeds, etc.
Do you use an exercise ball for a chair?
I know some transcriptionists do, and I think the wine and the ball would make a really fun combination to watch.
Can you exercise with light weights?
If you don't have a problem with a disc or something serious like that, working the upper body with light free weights may be just the ticket. It improves the posture and strengthens the muscles you use to hold up your arms while working.
I exercise my gray matter more than most..sm

so I believe it's from having TOO MUCH ON YOUR PLATE.....*l* - really, more responsibilities, more things to remember......all that stuff.....so who would remember typing the report.

What's great is....if someone down the road ASKED you about that certain report(s), MQ, QA, or an MD's office....you'd most certainly remember it......*LOL*

So, it's only the short-term memory that is affected FIRST *l* - that and the eyes.......first to go *rofl*
