God has blessed me greatly too!!

It varies greatly...
Where I work the range is from 6 cpl up to almost 12 cpl so you just don't know. I guess decent is 10 or more. Anything less is not too good in my opinion especially considering I made 8 cents per GROSS line 10 years ago which would equal I don't know maybe around 11 cents per 65 character line and again that was 10 years ago. The only profession I know of where the pay continues to go down! Thanks technology! :(
Greatly depends on whether you are an IC or employee.

Katrina is going to impact us greatly in the wallets.
Prices everywhere are going to rise.  I am not an expert but I can almost feel everyone preparing to raise rates for services and products.  My biggest fear is insurance premiums.  Can anyone argue me out of this thought process?
The incidence of errors could be greatly reduced - sm
if MTs were paid in such a way that they didn't have to positively RACE through everything they type, just to make a decent line count and an honest day's wage.
Take proofreading for example: Sometimes I think we come out ahead by NOT proofreading and taking our chances with missing an error, since if we really kick butt on our line counts, it can make up for being docked. But that goes against my nature. So I slow down enough to actually SEE what I'm typing, and then go back and proofread. It produces the best-possible quality of reports, but then eliminates any chance of a bonus because I can't reach that *carrot-on-a-stick* that is dangled a bit too high (in terms of a qualifying line count) for me to reach.
you should really start using expanders now! That would greatly help your production - nm

Any help on form 8829*Expenses for Business Use of your Home would be greatly

Hi All,

I was a statutory employee last year but not now.  I usually do my own taxes but am having trouble with form 8829 and am not sure if the accountant can squeeze me in at this late date.  Thought I would try here first for help.  I use my den exclusively for work (almost) and am going to take this 7% of our home as a business expense.

Under Part II... Lines 10 and 11.  Deductible mortgage interest and real estate taxes...I am going to take the entire amount on schedule A, so, hopefully, do not have to enter anything here.

line 17. Insurance.  Are we allowed to take a portion of our homeowners insurance as a deduction? I have no separate business insurance.

Line 19. Utilities.  I know I can take 7% of my electric, gas, water, garbage (I think), but what about phones? We have both cell and regular phone.  When I call, I use the regular phone for toll free numbers, but the cell phone to my boss who does not have a toll free #.

Then, I need to find the value of my home for Part III. I guess I will check home sales in the neighborhood and go by that.

Geez..sorry for sounding like such a dummy.  I can do all the other...capital gains, etc, just not sure what is allowed for home expenses.

As I say, I will try to get in to the accountant, but any advise for any of this form would be greatly appreciated.  I cannot complete schedule A until I have my Profit or Loss done, which I cannot complete until I do this form.

Thanks.

I find that exercise has greatly improved the quality of my sleep
I used to need 10-11 hours of sleep to feel rested, but since I started exercising (40 minutes a day on an elliptical machine), I feel completely refreshed with 8 hours.
The Microsoft Wireless optical keyboard has greatly eased SM
The Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 keyboard (came packaged with wireless mouse at Staples), box says "standard keyboard + optical mouse) has greatly, greatly relieved symptoms on my elbows and wrists.

My elbows just stung before I got this keyboard. If I relax and kind of let it do what it wants, kind of get used to its touch, I really like it. It has greatly helped my elbow symptoms in particular.
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP!!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!!

Any help would be so appreciated. sm
Starting a new account and it is using a Dictaphone c-phone. I have never used this type of machine and told them that when I took on the account. The office provided me with a Dictaphone Voice Processor Connexions phone, Model 421, and it has the headset and foot pedal connected to the phone itself.

I have managed to program the dial-in number successfully (yeah).

Their office manager is not helpful or knowledgeable about this at ALL. She just looks at me and says, "I have no clue about anything to do with the transcription."

When I call into the dictation server, it rings, connects, beeps once, and then sits there. I have looked at the instruction book (or a partial one that was given to me - book is ripped in half) and have tried the command #*18 to go into transcribe mode, but press the pedal and nothing happens, but I do hear three beeps.

In one part of the book, it says to program a quick access key to "sign off and get next" by using the number 8. I have also done this, but still - just three beeps.

Please help me - I am clueless. Always used FTP with digital recorders or Lanier, but never Dictaphone.

Thanks!

Thank You. Much Appreciated by Those of us Looking!

have a good day!
Burnt out and under appreciated
I can relate. My income is decreasing, my hours are increasing. My son is making more as a security guard at the local casino. I'm so tired at night I can't do anything. I think we all need vacations, if we could afford one.
It is SO nice to be appreciated by somebody!
I am so glad to see that somebody realizes these ESLs are practically impossible to understand, as the "higher-ups" in these outfits don't have a clue what we have to put up with, and they think our job is so easy-- we are "just typists", you know.  I am just finishing up a very long night shift and you have made my day.  Thanks again!
Thanks all for your responses. All help is truly appreciated!
We're just gonna ride it out. It's been 9 hours and he's still going. I did get him to agree to try to nibble a cracker and DH is bring home ginger ale and Gatorade was recommended by the NP, so we'll try that and maybe a popsicle and dry toast. Thanks for all the help. Say a prayer for us as we ride this out and pray I don't get it after him.
I really appreciated my dictator just now.

At the end he said, "This is <his name> bumbling through this again.  Thank you so very much."

Guess it makes me at least feel a little appreciated.

Thank you all for these sites, they are truly appreciated (nm)

I didn't tell that to try to get anything from anyone though it is appreciated.
Things have progressively gotten worse for us since this summer. First having to work less to keep an eye on my child who is having problems, missing work to go to school, go to court, etc., then having work dry up AND having a company not pay in a timely manner. Not having insurance and having to spend hundreds of dollars a month on medicine. I was also a gestational surrogate and had the parents stiff me on bills, which eventually they paid but the stress of dealing with the lawyers and bill collectors didn't help. It has just been on thing after another...just piling on and drowning a bit at a time. We haven't paid rent on time since July and of course the landlord is upset. They have bills to pay too and I understand and appreciate that they haven't booted us yet. Next month I won't pay on time either and they are mulling over their options. I don't have money to move us anywhere and frankly no where to go. There are a couple homeless shelters here but they are scary and I don't think very safe.

I'm trying my hardest to dig us out. I think we'll be okay next year but I'm at my stress max now.
Thank you for answering. Much appreciated.

Thank you Jan for the info and the prayers - so appreciated. (nm)

any info good or bad would be appreciated

on JLG and All Type. Speaking with one, actual offer from the other but not sure about either. Concern for more is flexibility which they both promise, but I heard that one before.

Nice post! It is appreciated! Thanks! :-)

Your kind words are so appreciated.
I sincerely appreciate your so very kind words and you are definitely doing the most important thing, I feel - praying. I do believe in prayer. :) Thank you so very, very much.

I put my life in God's hands each and every day and have for many years now. :) That does not go to say that I am still not scared though for sure. :)
Thank you both!!! Much appreciated. Will relay the info. (nm)

It's nice to feel appreciated
and usually a rare occurrence to get that kind of recognition - good for you !
I appreciated your post just now but dontcha...

I appreciated what you just said in this post about union/organizing/mts....however, I think most of Americans are like this, not just MTs.

In this country, it seems to me (and I'm 3rd-4th generation), it's all about the individual and their pocketbook(s), finding a rare person who does actually  think globally or universally.

I feel this way politically too....for 6+ years people are complaining, moaning, and groaning about the govt - but not a single person would challenge same govt, only challenging with words and not actions (not enough actions) - so they will continue to moan and groan, not getting off their duffs and doing anything REAL.

just my nickel's worth.....

I really appreciated these posts too. Today
I just increased my work load for myself (I am an IC) to afford more things at food shopping (LOL) and also because the holidays are coming. I keep crabbing on my days off (during the week BTW) that I don't have enough money, so I don't go anywhere. I scheduled myself just a bit more for those days off, about 3 hours extra a day. I figure if I can crab and stare at e bay, I can type a couple of hours. Now, I have to motivate to do so, and your suggestions here help a lot. It isn't just boredom it is the motivation instead of putting the energy to crabbing to myself, to actually type, get the work done. Even a little bit more will make me feel like I accomplished something. Now I will apply what you suggest above and I know it will help! Thanks so much!
To each their own. I appreciated FedUP's post.

Glad to know my experience is appreciated....

I was just told by a company that 8.5 cpl as an IC was too high, even with 20+ years of experience!

actually, ladies, it's III/VI

ladies she said IF!

THANK YOU LADIES!!!

Ladies, ladies, ladies!!!

First off, let's get something straight:  It doesn't matter HOW I spell words in my posts because you are NOT paying me for my posts, okay?

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I'm giving you MY experiences - like them or not, and I don't care if you do because you weren't the one who lost $$$ coming out of the word work because of it and had a bunch of sleepless nights.

I didn't like the experiences I've had with subcontractors I've used - I give and give and give and can't get decent work back.  Those are the cold, hard facts, like them or not.  I didn't like them!  That's why I do it all myself now.  I personally just don't have time to babysit SCs who are supposed to know how to do their jobs but for some strange reason, refuse to do it.  It was the mentality of pure slop - type it up as fast as you can and hope no one reads it!

It's a good thing I'm a nice person because I tell you, some of these SC's got me SO irritated with the slop quality of their work that I should have strangled their little necks with my own bare hands!

Ladies, please!

If the MTSO is getting, say, 12 cents a line from the client, do you REALLY expect to get paid more than 8 or 9 a line subcontracting?  I mean, after all, isn't the MTSO entitled to make SOME profit, or do you believe the MTSO is in it just for the joy of it all?

I get a little irritated listening to these SCs who expect a line rate equivalent to what an IC/MTSO is getting.  If you want those line rates, then please.....find your OWN accounts, ya know???  In the interim, please get with reality and understand that when you work for someone, you're just NOT going to get pay like you would if you worked for yourself!!!

Thanks, ladies
How did I not figure that out???  lol!
Hello Ladies
Its not the system, it works great for me. However, did not work so great at another company I was employed with. It was near impossible to make decent lines with this very hostile company who got very very ugly with me when I asked for specifics on their line counting methods. I am now with another company that uses Extext, typing the same work types, working the same hours and my lines I feel are commensurate with my speed and time actually spent typing. I feel really terrible for you guys that are going through what I went through. My advice - get another job. Don't let any company walk all over you. Don't believe everything you hear here either about "what a great place this is, or what a great place that is." Find out for yourself, if it doesn't seem right then it probably isn't. Trust your instincts.
Thank you all for your kind wishes and prayers. It is much appreciated.
You are all great!
That is a wonderful benefit...and I am sure your daughter appreciated you being there...

Ladies, what is on for din din tonight?????

beef tenderloin, mushroom gravy, noodles, salad and some fruit.  Then, a whole pot coffee while I work.

Okay ladies, that's just childish

I wanted to have a serious discussion about the value of taking the test compared to the value of the profession at this point and where it's headed in the future.  I do take a lot of pride in my work, but taking the test and maintaining my certification are something that will put a strain on my already strained budget.  I'm wondering what good or if it will do any good at all to spend the money to get a 1 cpl increase and still come up short after a 55% line cut due to VR.

I keep reading posts that say if you're not happy get out, there's other jobs. And posts that say VR is the future for MT, so get used to it.  When hearing all this, it makes me wonder if I'm smart to invest to secure my future or just get out now before I invest all this and be obsolete in 10 years.

grow up ladies
Don't you get tired of the cat fighting? It isn't any wonder you don't produce any lines.
To the ladies who have their own accounts
What method do you use of receiving your dictation and tracking line count to ensure proper billing to the client?
