I too believe it is a trend, basically to cut costs. As far as MQ, SM

I don't work for them, but honestly, from reading posts, seems like they were just bought out by a mad scientist who thinks up ways to drive people crazy. Sort of a game of how far can we drive people before they crack.

Beware of ink replacement costs. The more inexpensive the printer, the more the ink costs.

    Must be a trend
We are having roast with potatoes and carrots too. Cooked in the crock pot all day. Wouldn't know what to do without it!! It's just so hard sitting here all day having to smell it. My tummy has been growling...can't wait to eat!!
    Trend
I also use Trend. I just bought a new computer with Vista and it came with the computer. So far it's working great.
Seems to be the trend in this business
Sliding downhill bit by bit. I hope you find a solution too :(
    Anyone else notice the trend.
I'm just amazed when I look at the Job Seeker's board and every job has at least 400 or even up to 1000 views.  Are that may people really looking for jobs. I think most of us are just not happy where we are and are always looking for greener pastures, but what I am finding..there aren't any..This professional has gone way down. Between the line rate and less-than-average benefits, why do we want to waste our times with the frustration. At this point, I think I can make more at Star Bucks and I hear they offer great benefits including medical insurance. I'd rather make a latte than put up with this stress...At least, those customers are appreciative of their coffee!!!
You can go to Trend housecall and run

free and it works.  You don't have to buy anything.  Last year when I had a horrible tough virus I was able to get around the virus disabling on my system using the online scanner.  It will clean and correct what it can.  Those viruses it can't, it will give you to the tool (for any worm or trojan viruses).  After you do that and you're clean, get your virus protection on there ASAP.  Here's the link ...

    reversing OUTSOURCE trend ?
that I will not make the money that the hospital pays me. But is it true - that outsourcing is being reversed? I'd love to hear that ... so many more options for decent employment would come our way.

    THanks !
    Trend Net from http://www.newegg.com!

Thanks, I have Trend Micro. I'll try that.
Just supposedly it might not work with some programs. Has anyone had trouble with Trend Micro having problems with certain software or programs?
It's not deep at all. It's a trend and I am glad to see it go away with Jude Law's
movies miserably failing at the box office.  There's nothing deep about that.  Just the facts maam.
is the new trend to not put spaces after a number and the measurment--sm
6cm?  I got QA back stating that the space I entered 6 cm was incorrect.
Trend Micro is the only security software I use.
    .
Trend? Lets go back to the 60s, Rock Hudson...
Epitome of masculinity by your standards and he turned out to be as gay as a song  bird!   Talk about girly...so you never know, Toby Keith maybe hiding a few secrets too!
just hope he doesn't start a new trend--ewww!
I can't stand it if I accidentally forget to put mine on. I can usually tell pretty quickly if I do. Just not comfortable to me (or anyone else around probably).
I have Trend Micro PC-cillin and have never gotten a warning for this site nm

well now there's a trend. doesn' t everyone in auburn, alabama live in a trailer?
what college do the trailer park students attend?
How are hiring companies getting away with trend towards IC versus employee status SM
after the lawsuit that determined that IC was indeed an employee because she was told when to work, what days of the week.  The company got into trouble with employment laws because of this a few years back, yet I see most of the job postings on this and other sites are mostly IC.
Adware is extremely limited. Try Trend Micro House Call.

Good for you, Linda! SM First, editing's a desirable trend. Higher skill, easier SM
I feel it may be like a train about to rush around the bend at me.

For the discussion, editing is a higher skill and it's easier on the hands--absolutely no carpal tunnel problems since I started editing. And the WAGES ARE ABOUT THE SAME--you go through approximately twice as much dictation (some people more, some less depending on talent) in the same time it would take to transcribe it and get paid half as much for that amount of dictation, ending up without a drop in wages from editing. This is fair and market-driven.

Fewer editors would be needed, but some would be needed for the stinkers, even scary-good as VR gets with most dictators.

The big threat is from the electronic medical record, where physicians and their assistants check boxes on a handheld device they carry around with them and there is NO text report to come to us at all. England has had this for some years; go look and see how MTs are doing on the Emerald Isle.

No Chicken Little here, guys, AND not burying my head in the sand either. I don't have a view into the future, but the one thing that's clear is the future will require developing new skills, professional or trade level, of one kind or another. I just hope and pray it doesn't require going back to suits and office politics. School's okay, even at my age, but am guilty of putting it off to see if I'm going to be allowed to continue pretty much as is until I'm too old to work...huh--maybe there's some sand obscuring the picture after all. Best wishes.
So basically she herself is QA?
    x
I do basically the same as you, but I will
as I type in Word, and this helps with not having to go back and read the entire document.  I find that if I notice it right away, correct it, then I can move on, and it also helps if I need to re-listen to the term or phrase.  I have also noticed where my auto correct did not expand correctly, and even though my final spell check would most likely pick this up, I tend to be a little more careful with that as well.  I am so afraid to go with an Expander because I'm sort of afraid I'll lose that "specialist" touch you speak of.
    They are basically just saying
we will make your transcription look good like she looks good.

I don't see what the big deal is. Sex/beauty sells everything lately. It's just the world we live in, unfortunately. Every commercial on TV almost has some type of sexual undertones to it and some very obvious.
    Basically, yes and no.
That doesn't help much, does it?

They all pretty much perform the same functions, but some have different types of connectors that hook to the computer and/or equipment.

I've got 2...a USB that hooks to my computer, and one that hooks directly into a Dictaphone. I know some other pedals connect to game ports. Sometimes the software allows you to set up a variety of pedals with different connectors.
It is basically just something you have to
make yourself do. I learned this way as when I started as an MT we were on typewriters, so you had no choice.
    costs
I also agree that the cost of vet care has gone way up in the last 10 years, having animal companions is expensive. I think as more and more people are coming to realize their companions are senient beings they are willing to do whatever is necessary for optimum care just as you would do for a human. That being said, it is extremely expensive and where I used to have 5 cats and 2 dogs, I now have 3 cats and 1 dog due to losing some to old age and illness. Although I would love to have more, I know I cannot afford it if one of them gets sick.
Can you tell us how much this costs?
Have the Martel catalogue but oddly it does not give price. Am hoping it is under $50.
    Rx costs
I get 2 of my meds from Canada.  Can you get yours that way and save $?  Just do a search for cheap drugs or Canadian drugs.
    MT Costs
I have been a working MT for 2+ years and I am still buying things.  I have a full library of books but there are only a few I use all the time.  Still there are days when I find I need the others.  I believe I have around 16 total.  The Book Of Style is an important one.  I would recommend that for sure along with any other specialty books for the type of account you plan on typing.  I had my computer prior to training but with books, the MT course, pedals, software (spell checker, expander) I spent over $2,500.  This doesn't include a desk, chair or the other things you'll need. I would suggest you buy some 3-ring binders to keep samples in for each account you type.  I have a binder for every doctor/client.  Every doctor you come to learn to type will have his/her own rules.  The binders are my Bibles.  At first I went through a ton of legal pads.  I always keep one at my desk to jot things down.  Now I only need one on occasion.  It will be a learning experience and slow going at first, but hang in there.  Like some other MTs mentioned, it is not as easy as it sounds, but I do enjoy it.  Welcome to the club!
It costs more than $10 believe me.
They take a percentage of what is sent to you - it's not a flat rate fee. The more you make the more they take.
My costs have actually gone down
This year my property taxes will go from over $2,300 to $800 a year, that is because I have turned that magical number of 65. That is good and yet if I were to die, then the taxes would go right back up for hubby as he is 10 years younger and has not gotten there yet. He better treat me right!
I feel basically the same way sm
why waste their time, as well as mine, just to say, "Hey, I'm your new sup"! Come on, if you need a message to figure that out...well, I don't know what to say about that!  Anyways, you're right.  I don't need anybody holding my hand...that's why I work at home!
You are so right - it's basically worthless
    nm
But you could basically try 50 lines per sm
report, and go with that.  That is a reasonable ratio with the differing times you sated.  Would add up to about 1250 lines, give or take different dictators, and the ways lines are counted.   Some dictators take FOREVER to dictate 7 mins, others breeze through 3 mins, with lot of lines.
Basically, it boils down to this....
Back in the day, we were seduced!

    Now we're being raped.
I agree. I mean as an IC you basically pay
so many write-offs.  Hire a tax professional your first year to see what things you need to write off.  From then on out, a lot of ICs actually do their own.  Employee status simply means the employer withholds tax money, but they also have a lot more control over you as far as set hours and pay for that matter.
I basically tell them I know nothing about that route (sm)
Like you I was an MT for 7 years or so before I ever had kids. And even then I did not have the chance to work at home, nor would I have wanted to, actually. IMO with our work, the choice, if you have high-need babies like mine, is either (a) ignore the kid and work or (b) work when they're sleeping. Which means I don't get to sleep like, at all, because I had babies who did not sleep much.

I would, and have, done what you did the drugstore clerk. You can't tell some people anything.

I personally have told people who asked me, "I wouldn't. You won't make enough money for the aggravation." I've also told them, "If that was your plan, you should have started 5 years ago so you had all that under your belt before you had kids." Depends on the circumstance and how hateful I'm feeling that day. (blush)
In theory, it's basically the same as the other
MSWord version; it just has all the bells and whistles.
It was basically an example of a post on there.

Everything should be checked out first, but just like you confirmed, there are local practices for each state that will post for MTs.  I found one myself but I guess I was too late because they never contacted me.

    Just trying to help...

    Absolutely, but basically because
It seems ANYONE thinks they can do it. Even those with atrocious spoken English who apparently slept through basic high school English classes and those who have no gift for spelling at all seem to think that if they can play hunt-and-peck on a computer keyboard, they can be an MT.

I reached the point long ago and when I they propose that godawful question, "How do I become a medical transcriptionist?," I give them the most blunt answer I can without being downright rude...

"Take some night classes in basic English and spelling, then you'll have to take a couple of classes in anatomy and medical terminology. That's just to start."

They lose interest quite quickly when they realize they'll have to exert some effort.
    basically I agree
I think definitely industry was better before the BOS, when good MTs simply used good English skills and common sense. Some uniformity in the business was an okay concept, but too much of the "rules" make no sense, and changes at the association's whim. Like another said, it **severely** reduces productivity, which works against the patient, the hospital and the MT. I flat refused to pay any attention to it for years, after a hospital supvr told me some of the "rules" in it, and only when I had to for employment, finally got one and now use it.
Yes, and that same jug of water costs how much after it's
been paid for with tax dollars, hauled in on trucks, and handed out by National Guardsmen and FEMA workers who are being paid and are away from their own families? That little jug of water costs more to the taxpayers than Perrier.
My son did too. It costs a lot and unless you're
a real people person who can SELL, you won't make any money and you'll spend a bundle. TURN AND RUN, don't walk away unless you're ready to LIVE IT! IT has to be all you think, talk, eat, use, buy, etc....and you won't make a bunch if you don't get people to sign up.
I cut my costs a year ago...
I have noticed very little difference. I get the same speed and the only things that inhibit that are the usual things such as when the ISP is doing an update etc. Everyone I know with different DSL companies have said the same. You can always go back up to the higher speed if it doesn't work well in your case. To me it was worth saving the extra $20/month
    AT&T business costs
I pay 230 a month for three lines, unlimited long distance, and DSL on a business plan. The biggest difference is the DSL cost is higher, and they charge per jack on installation. As opposed to 20 per line, i pay a flat rate of 50 for the LD for all three lines.
hidden costs by being an IC

The taxes are more as an independent contractor.  period.

you pay the matching that the employer would pay.

Normally your benefits pkg from the hospital or employer of sick days, holidays, insurance, etc is worth about $10,000.  Somehow you have to absorb that with what you charge.  In addition to losing the matching the employer is paying.  Otherwise the company you are contracting with is making out like a bandit -- and you truly are coming out on the short end of the stick -- they know this -- and they are laughing up their sleeve until we wake up out here and start charging so they won't be coming out the winner in this all the time.  The very reason they OUTSOURCE is to get rid of those hidden costs and we now have taken on.

And then of course the hidden days down for work on computer, waiting for storms to pass, and the various and asundry responsibilities you take on and absorb that the company you are contracting with gets to turn loose of.

p.s. and oh please don't pop up with ITS WORTH A LOT TO TYPE IN MY JAMMIES.  No, we are expected to be professional whether in Gucci or WalMart specials.  And we should be paid accordingly.  That argument doesn't fly.  and being home with the kids doesn't either.  Only one thing can be done at one time, and you can watch the kids or you can transcribe but you can't do both simultaneously.  The guilt factor may be less when one needs to do errands in the day -- but guess what -- while people are sleeping guess who is up into the night beating the keys.  No, this should not be a trade off.  It's a business like any other business who does a contract with another company.

    phone costs
    Hi,

Cell phone runs 89 per month,, that is the whole package, unlimited internet access, free text, nights and weekends, etc,,,,and I was able to do away with home internet altogether. No longer have a land line or DSL at home so the savings there made up the difference
Actually, VR actually costs the client....sm
less money, which is why some are changing to it...to pay less for transcription, which is why WE get paid less. That is how it is with my company. So in essence, the company is taking a cut in pay as well....why else would anyone use it, including the MTSOs??? I'm just sayin'.
MDI and Transcend both use basically the BOS rules
unless client requests something else.  Sounds more like one of Futurenet's nightmare accounts.
I found basically the same thing - sm
    Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN)
    Dayton, OH Doug Moore
York, PA Roseann Freundel --- was on the Residency list in 04-2004. So she has probably completed her residency and has moved to another state/country by now. Also the hospital would have the records I would think, especially since a resident did the delivery. Good luck.

I basically was offered a position..
She said I did excellent on the test. She asked to let them know how many minutes I would want, FT or PT, which I did, and haven't heard a thing since.
