Are you able to rest your arms?
Maybe arm rests? They helped me for a while until I started getting carpal tunnel symptoms from not having my hands properly positioned (due to resting my elbows on my arm rests). Needless to say, got rid of the arm rests and after a while, the pain just went away (both in wrists/hands and shoulders/back). However, I do have quite severe knots if you ever feel my shoulders :)
Put a small pillow on it and ..
lay it on the armrest, just under your elbow. Just a little pressure will press the mid play section. Ease up to stop.

No, the 2000 is the small one without the palm rest.
When I saw the 4000 and the 6000, they were bigger and I think they were cordless. This one is small, has a cord, and is very inexpensive; something like $15 I think he said!

I do better without a wrist rest also.
The down side of working for a small
things stating "you get paid when we get paid by the client".  WRONG!!  Stay away from these types!!!  That is a wrong practice and should not be passed on to the subcontractors.  I hope you get your $$$!!!  Jerks like this give all small companies a bad name.  As if your bills aren't as important or the time you spent transcribing is not worth the effort to make a timely payment!!!!
I need some advice on starting my own small side business. sm

First of all, I have worked for several nationals in the past few years, and equipment has always been provided.  I currently have a f/t position with a national that I use my own personal computer for, they just put their software on it.  I had what I needed already, as far as foot pedal, Expander program, etc.

I have just been sort of rolling ideas around in my head about possibly starting up something small perhaps on a p.r.n. basis just to bring in a little extra income.  As I am still just mulling this around in my mind, my questions are:  How do I go about getting started? Do I try to purchase equipment first, or start out using tapes? I am worried about spending the money and not having any takers, so I am thinking, I should send out some sort of letters first; but, without having the equipment already, how do I tell them I plan on doing their transcription.  Maybe mention tapes first, and tell them I have plans to go digital after I get up and running? These are all just things I wonder about.  If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to email me with any advice.

I have been an MT for 16+ years, but as I said, I have always had all of the stuff provided for me and just don't know how to start.

Thanks in Advance!

my physical therapist told me to, but i find it is just about impossible to do ! My shoulders are reallt bad also.
Is this w/the built-in hand rest? Touch was nice, but the rest made my palms achey. Didn't

I drink San Pelligrino sparkling water with a lime wedge
and that does the job
I have a big old pillow or two.
I sit on one and have the other behind my back. I wish I could take the seat out of my blazer and type on that all day. :-)
I just use a pillow
for back support
How about a neck pillow you can
That can help sometimes; you can even make one. Just sew up a tube and fill it with beans or rice. Or maybe you could get someone to massage your neck to loosen up those tight muscles? If nobody is around to do that for me, I sometimes stand under the shower with hot water or take a long soak in the tub with Epsom salts. Also, those neck rotating exercises help loosen up tense muscles sometimes. Hope it gets better; I know the feeling well. If it's not the hands, wrists, or arms, it's the back, neck, or butt.
I used a pillow. I placed part of it on the
the keyboard tray so I wasn't having to chase it around.   You could also get something to put under your desk to put your foot pedal on.  The old wooden Coke crates are great.  There are adjustable keyboard trays.  Part of mine broke and I'm limited in what I can do with it, but could go up and down, tilt it, go sideways.  You could go to a store like Office Depot where they have various things setup and see if anything would work for you.
I use a pillow that I prop against either my desk or my

keyboard tray and then put my keyboard on the pillow.  It helps my fingers, wrists, back, and shoulders, which helps my production.  I find that I sit back with back against the chair, which helps ease shoulder and back discomfort.

I use a standard-sized bed pillow and isn't too fat or firm.

Try using a standard-sized bed pillow

instead of a board.  I put the pillow on my keyboard tray or I prop it against my desk.  My posture is better and you aren't banging on a hard surface.  It helps with wrists, elbows, and shoulders.

It may take a day or two to get used to.  I found a sort of quishy pillow works better than a very firm pillow.  I don't have problems with the keyboard bouncing off.  I've also had the pillow up again my chest (I have a large ledge - LOL) and I type with the keyboard angled down sometimes.  The pillow supports my forearms that way and relieves the stress on my shoulders/back.

I do the same thing. Put a pillow/cushion in my lap
and type away.  I had purchased an ergonomic keyboard and simply could not get used to using it.  I read on one of these boards about somebody putting their keyboard in their lap.  I tried that with my ergo keyboard and now I love it.  It's really hard to type on a flat keyboard now.  Typing with my keyboard in my lap is much easier on my shoulders and back, too.  I usually have one leg propped up on the hard drive of my computer, too.
Try propping your pillow against your desk or

or keyboard tray.  I'm short and not much lap, so having it in my lap doesn't work for me.  I don't have issues of chasing my keyboard when I prop the pillow.

I think a sort of squishy pillow works better.  If you have a fat one I think there is too much bounce in it and then you will be chasing the keyboard.

Thanks for the pillow suggestions; the frontal

wow, you'd think your arms would
Has anyone tried this?
I bought a wedge at Michael's for about 59 cents. Bought one for my SM
Lanier station so I could see the display and one for my keyboard.
Try sitting on a pillow. Extra cushy!
Advice on any topic given freely here.
I changed my pillow to a memory foam and
that has reduced my neck pains and headaches a lot. I also have a memory foam neck pillow I bought at Wal-Mart.
I prop a pillow on my keyboard tray and then

put my keyboard on the pillow.  You need a sort of squishy pillow, too firm and it doesn't work.    I find that it makes me sit with my back against the back of the chair and it also helps with pain in fingers, wrists, and shoulders.

I use a standard bed pillow - foam not feather.

How many of you transcribe with your arms on armrests? nm

You need a better chair with adjustable arms.

Need some help. Weird stuff on my son's arms. sm

I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before.  It's just too weird and I have worked for doctors (mostly general practice) for 20 years.

My son is 20 and he has these really weird looking discolorations on his left arm. They are flat, pink, scattered and in many different dimensions from the size of a pencil eraser to an actual small squares. They are not raised, don't itch or hurt, but they've just been appearing slowly and are now covering more areas of the arm.

He works in a kitchen at a nursing home, but the spots appeared before he got this job. The nursing home said he needs to have this checked out before he comes back to work on Tuesday (he has tomorrow off).

Rundown on his health history is that he is asthmatic (not enough to be on meds)and coughs a lot. Unfortunately, he is a very heavy smoker and I've been trying to get him to stop. He has cut down, because he's living at our house now and smoking is outside. He doesn't cough as much, but still coughs a lot.

He is 6 foot 4 inches and weighs 135 lbs. He eats constantly and never gains weight, but he's been like this since he was in grade school. He has a confirmed diagnosis of thalassemia and also has symptoms of what may be Marfan's Syndrome.

One last thing is that he had months of unprotected sex with a girl he was in love with until he found out that he wasn't the only one she was sleeping with, so he left her and moved back home for the time being.

Any ideas would be helpful.

weird stuff on son's arms
I think you need to go to the doctor with your son in the morning -- mostly because you will understand more about what the doctor is saying (because you've been typing this stuff for so long), you'll be able to ask the right questions and be sure it's not passed off as dermatitis which it most certainly is not.
Good luck - let us know.
pityriasis rosea would not be on arms
It only goes all over your trunk. I had it on front and back.

Visualize each hug...parentheses are arms:-)

small mentality usually means small pocketbook
Still make more than you and I but that is deserved. They've put the effort forward and educated themselves.

Any time I travel and don't have room for my keyboard I use a pillow in my lap or prop
it on the edge of the desk.  I find it also takes some of the stress off my wrists and I tend to sit straighter in my chair.  Takes a bit getting used to, but if you travel with your own pillows you can use your own and it won't be so bad.   You could also go to one of the office warehouse companies like Office Depot and look at their keyboard trays.  They may have some that slides or clamps onto a desk that would work for you.
Yikes! He had the "saggiest" upper arms I

"adductive" (lifting arms away from body)
Doctors are always making words up...sigh.
I've always been partial to a chair with arms
and I'm not sure why.  I don't know where people put their arms with no arm rests.  Would that cause shoulder tiredness?  I don't have an idea for a new one, but I sure need one!
Joint Pain in Arms/Hands/Shoulders
I am just going to relate this story for what it is worth to someone else.

In 2001 I began having problems with my left hand, arm and shoulder. Orthopedist thought it may be the beginnings of carpal tunnel but EMG was neg. It was bad enuf that at times I couldn't pick stuff up and it hurt to type. It waned and waxed. A few years later I began having problems with my hands and the joints in my fingers hurting, along with left shoulder pain. My hands were so bad I could not open a jar at times. Eventually I went to a rheumatologist who told me that I had no visible signs of severe arthritis. All MDs, incl. orthopedist and rheumatologist recommended trying Celebrex, aspirin, etc. The regular stuff. I was resigned to early arthritis like my mother.

Well, one day in late 2004/early 2005 I decide to see a chiropractor for my shoulder because I'd had electro therapy for an injury years ago and thought maybe this would help. I had some adjustments and electro therapy on my shoulder.

I want to tell you -- ALL and EVERY pain in my fingers left and never came back. ALL and EVERY pain running from shoulder to hand stopped. It had to have been some sort of pinched nerve.

Not a single MD had even suggested seeing a chiropractor. And had it not been for my shoulder and my past experience, I never would have thought of it and would still be suffering, possibly with even further damage to the nerve by now.
The few I've done use the robot arms as extra hands &

I like a chair with arms, deep seat and high back (sm)
so I bought a leather chair from Costco about a year ago and have never regretted it.  Think it is made by Lane.  It was a little expensive but since I'm in it for hours a day - sometimes 12 - I figure it was an important investment... plus it is so good looking we often wheel into other parts of house when we need extra seating :)
With short arms, I need chair with shallow seat, good back support and high back. Want arm rests

All I can say is rest when you need it and - sm
listen to the docs.  I, personally, have not had cancer but after dealing with my 5-y/o Wilm's tumor (kidney cancer) this year, our family has been but through the wringer.  Jen handled her chemo great, lost her hair with 2 treatments to go (had 14).  Kids are great about that though, got a little self-conscious but after a few minutes in a new place would forget she had no hair. I got her a couple hats for the sun and for her to feel better too. Painted her head one day, had fun with it.  She had good days and bad of course, but for the most part handled it all very well.  Just had a clean ultrasound and chest x-ray today, yeah!  She looks like a little boy now, with dirty blond hair (was an incredible shade of red before), with now the roots growing a new color, a strawberry blond/red, really pretty.  So if you do lose your hair it may grow in different (probably will).  Jen's was very fine before, now it is a lot thicker, still straight as a board though as it was.  You may lose some weight too, but after chemo is done you will regain it once you get your appetite back.  Best wishes to you and feel free to email !
Just take out 1/3 of the mix so far and add only 2/3 of rest

If she's like the rest of us MTs out there...
She's doing an excellent job and just wishes the docs would WAKE UP and start doing the same. Docs ARE incompetent for the most part, and that's sad. But you go ahead and think they walk on water, honey. When they amputate the wrong leg during your operation, you'll be the first to scream, LAWSUIT!!!!
How is this different from the rest of us?
I haven't said this before, but I've been thinking it.  So the suits only think about the bottom line and the doctors don't care whose jobs go overseas as long as it isn't theirs.  How are we any different?  How many of us cared that textile/garment workers jobs went overseas?  Until the lead paint scare, how many of us cared that toy making jobs were going overseas?  Do we stop buying the latest electronic gadgets, not to mention computers, because they are virtually all made overseas now?  For the most part, we didn't worry about those jobs, so why would anyone care about ours?  Wal-Mart, K-Mart and the other low-price retailers push their suppliers for ever cheaper products, and plants overseas are the best suppliers.  Have we stopped shopping there, or is price all we care about, too?
about themselves? Help the rest of us
I think it is wonderful that you are making so much money. Why don't you help the rest of out and share your secretes? Please...I need all the help I can get at 7 cpl.
The rest of the world
Thinks Americans are suckers. We help everybody, give money away to everybody, and then they all turn on us. I'm beginning to think they are right-- we ARE suckers! Maybe it's time to tell the rest of the world to take care of their OWN people and problems for a change.
Why? Except for the rent all the rest is the same everywhere.

foot rest
So do you put both feet and the pedal on the foot rest?
Foot rest
I also would like to know if anyone has an idea for a foot rest.  I also have swollen feet at the end of the day.  I looked at my daughter-in-law's foot stool for breast feeding and thought it might work since it is slanted.  Off to Google this and see what I can find.
