Is it normal to have pay docked for errors? . .sm
I have been working at this company for a couple of months and they just sent me an e-mail telling us that if a report has the wrong date of service or gets rejected by the client for any reason, they are taking it out of our pay. I agree that we should be accountable for our errors but some of these reports are 20 to 30 minutes long. If the doctor does not dictate a date of service, we cannot leave it blank. We have to put something in and send it to QA. I really liked this company until they started this. (I'm an employee not an IC.) I guess the reason I am so worried is because about half the time there is no date of service dictated and I have to guess and send it to QA. What if they don't correct it and send it with the incorrect date? I know I need to ask my employer this. I was just wondering if this was normal. Thanks!
why you would be in the position to make the changes looking at the big picture wouldn't you?
I can only see things from my point of view but you are in contact with those who probably want answers as to why things are not turned around on a timely basis and perhaps when they ask you, you could tell them about morale issues, etc.
I'm with you, we're all still human beings operating these
It doesnt hurt to say a few words on behalf on someone at the other end.  If you don't have that within yourself, and you don't need it in return, you're a cold and lost person.
You're human. Blanks happen. Should never be penalized for them. nm
s
Call human resources. I called human resources about it. Sooner or later they will get tired of the
calls and do something about it. Safety in numbers. I have called twice. I forgot to mention the assinine QA point plan though. Mostly I bitched about the no work thing. Told them the new pay plan based on incentive is another joke with no work. Cant make incentive with no work.
Not infallible
QA is not infallible either and to be docked for their errors would be adding insult to injury. Don't be taken!
You're right! I wouldn't work for a company that SM
expected me to surf all over the world just because some prima donna didn't want to be bothered with proper dictation.
I wouldn't like that either. So, you're not typing in Word? sm
If not typing in Word, I wonder if you could copy/paste your work into a Word document to keep track of your line count.

If you can do that, make sure you have your line count set up to do it the same way they do....including lines, spaces, etc.

wouldn't implicate anybody since you're posting anonymously anyway
Just say who the company is!
QA means knowledgeable, not infallible or perfect -- As a new QA'er, I will be the first to admit
have things to learn, even though I've been doing MT for a long time.
You're absolutely right - I wouldn't recommend this profession to a young person either.
and no respect for it
We get docked by QA for not filling in the address
or carbon copies, EVEN if we've notated that we can't find it anywhere and leave a blank.  I have to look things up on the website, in a word document, anywho.com, and Google to fill in blanks.  The doctors mispronounce the names and don't spell them out.  It's a waste of time, and time is money when you work production.
I most certainly never docked an MT a single dime SM
for errors or blanks. That is completely insane (I know companies do it, and my hospital used to do it till I took the helm).
No, it is NOT the norm. You shouldn't be docked for that! QA
s
Would you work for a co. that docked your paycheck for blanks?
nm
I work for Spheris, was docked by QA for typing 02/13/08 as a date SM
instead of 2/13/08 (dictator said "two" not " O two", and I read this garbage!!! Holy crap batman...
Only a person who consistently leaves blanks because they are lazy should be docked.
Or maybe they should just be fired. The first place I ever worked docked us for errors that we should not have made. I was only docked a couple of times, and it was only a small amount, but it made me pay attention and be more careful, and I think it made be a better MT.
Two errors per page is a LOT of errors! nm

It wouldn't load with my Office. Somehow it wouldn't "read" my 2003 Basic, although sm
technical couldn't find anything wrong with my software. They really tried hard. I see so many people that like Escription, I'm sorry not to be able to use it. Hopefully I can get Office Pro on my next machine, and maybe use it then. I could upgrade, but I'm still not sure it would work.
Human? - sm
To err is human...to scam is criminal....and she will be brought up on charges this time, I will make sure of it.
You must not be a human being.
If you knew a patient's life was in danger you would not be at all concerned?
that is verbatim. QAs are only human too. nm

Human responses?
?
Actually it is the height of human
We are poisoning the earth and ourselves. Nature is amazing in her resilience, but do you know how long it takes the ecosystem to recover from fires and floods? Did you know that fire retardant has been found in human breast milk? What about the amount of pesticides and chemicals in the bloodstreams of infants and children? Denial is the only thing scarier than that. Do the research, it will open your eyes.
Every species EXCEPT HUMAN. nm

Yes, I think it's human nature

NM

I agree with you. We are ALL human...nm.

Human nature

People generally don't talk about how happy they are on a regular basis. They tend to want to talk to others when something is bothering them, and focus more on the negative. So I guess it makes sense that you don't see a lot of posts that say "Ladeedah, how I love my job and what a stupendous day it is in the transcription world today!" The job is just a means to a happier life, not the definition of a happy life.

Personally, I feel honored that I am in this profession.  Not because of the money or the skill and intelligence that it requires, but primarily because it allows me to be home with my daughter instead of shipping her off to daycare every day for some stranger to screw up. That is why I will deal with the lack of raises, crappy dictators, periodic lack of work, mgmt that is too overworked to care, etc. To be with my baby all the time and still bring in a paycheck, however meager it may be.

They believe ASR is human transcription?

They were all probably told that is why the work is over there and they have to fix our stuff, that way it boosts their egos.

I still believe it is the other way around.  OH...our ignorant minds.

Wouldn't that mean that you simply wouldn't have to print out everything?

Yes, we are all human BUT my post isn't going to part...
of a medical record.
DeVenture & Human Rights
You may want to check out the Bangor Daily News online State page for August 7 of this week. President, Michael Deville was found liable for employee discrimination. Sounds like a great place to work. In addition, that manager you are speaking of most likely has no backbone when it comes to standing up when it's require of her.
You are probably more upset than the doctors will be. They might act tough, but they are human too.

ENFJ here, miss human contact
working at home.
No, I like to feel human thank you. I wear my jeans or better.
I am not the type who wants to go around sloppily all day. It makes all the difference in your outlook as to how you dress and your personality.
Nice job by calling it. Docs are human too.

Its human nature to impose on other people whats right for yourself!

Even when its not asked for.  Maybe some people like to surround themselves with nonsense and chaos, where as I like peace and quiet!  I think people who like working with other people are either pretending or just plain crazy!

sorry, you are assigning human logic/emotions to animals...
seal mothers do not go nearly insane with fear and pain as they watch their babies being clubbed to death in front of them. - you've got to be kidding. Animals are incapable of the complexities of logic and emotion to get to that conclusion. If you want something to be frantic about, go to Africa and see the abandoned newborn infants piled in chicken wire crates in the hospital. Let's get priorities in order and no, a boy is not a dog or a pig or a rat.

Sorry. I am human and I make mistakes like everyone else. Obviously I meant "two." nm

nm

I'd love to agree, but I can't. I do think some doctors are aware a human being is transcribi
for them, but I think it is far from the majority.
When I worked for a vet. guy had dog allergy tested and dog was allergic to human dander. No kidding

The people proofing are human. Humans make mistakes daily.

Anyone know higher-up contact names at Dept. of Health and Human Services..sm
this is who created HIPAA. Anyone willing to email or write any of these people in regard to these offshoring issues and how the doctors should be required to inform the patient when their medical information is leaving the country in order to be transcribed. HIPAA was created with privacy and protection as its main purpose, but ironically once the work leaves the country, this means nothing. The Dept. of Health and Human Services (HIPAA) needs to step up and do the right thing here in the best interest of our country's citizens, while preserving many U.S. transcriptionists who will lose their jobs if no changes are made.

NOT GOOD!!!

Ya still got errors
Keep trying, you are almost there!
if you had that many errors

then something was wrong from the get go.

>>>It sounded good because I thought it would be less wear and tear on my hands. I type already all day on a FT regular job. I never had a report that didn't need massive changing and it just didn't take long to see that I was getting the proverbial screw.

Like I many times before:  [1] have the correct sound card; [2] have the correct microphone (the one that comes with the product is probably not good enough); [3] have VR analyze as many documents as you have available (I have more than 500 MB); [4] add words and phrases to the Word List (decreases errors in the long run); [5] do not dictate like you talk to someone ... you need to ar-ti-cu-late correctly; [6] take the time to correct errors when they occur or at the end of the day. But, if you see an error and change it manually, the program is not going to learn; [7] You cannot use VR for all dictators, but you can for all good dictators. I would not use it for the nightmares from hell, unless they are so repetitive you know what they are going to say as soon as they start to say it.

These are the most critical factors involved with using SR (speech recognition) software. If you eliminate or skip over any ONE of these items, you're going to reduce accuracy.

I've been averaging 99.5% (one to two errors per page) for a long time. It think it's obvious I'm doing something right.

There's nothing more I can say.

Errors
Aunt Bea -- no question is a dumb question. I personally correct errors as soon as I see them. I always have the fear that my spellchecker will not pick them up -- for instance if the error was "too" instead of "to" your spellchecker would not catch it. I leave nothing to chance. Hope this helps.
errors
.25 for typos, commas that don't affect the sentence
2.0 for missed medical terms
2.0 for incorrect use of a medical or nonmedical term
0 for leaving out a significant part of a sentence or replacing anything in a sentence that is not said.
when in doubt - leave a blank
errors

Is it typical for a co. to deduct for errors?  I have had some, but nothing that is overly noticable.

Errors

Do you find that it irritates you probably more than it should to see errors in the newspaper, etc.?  I mean, something that will be read by so many people should be proofread to perfection, don't you think?  They seem to just jump out at me and I know I'm more critical since I am an MT.  How about you?
