there are reasons for part timers
I have a medical condition and cannot always do a full two weeks, due to exhaustion and pain from my blood dyscrasia. That is why I am not a full time employee.  I was but had to cut back and when I did MQ canceled my insurance.  I would gladly go back to a hospital and work in-house but the two hospitals out here have outsourced all transcription.  When I did work in-house, I was able to work part time and the hospital offered insurance coverage to part timers.  I only had to pay $70/pay period for insurance.  Im astonished that most trans services will not cover part timers..I cant figure that out.  If the part timer is willing to pay the extra amount, why not?  I also have lost faith in American private insurance, as how can you trust private companies making decisions about whether you can get chemo, MRI's, etc?  Back a few years ago, whatever the doctor said you needed, you got.  Not anymore.  Now American HMOs and insurance companies pay people to check over your medical history and decide whether you can get this or that done.  How can you trust companies when their only concern is profit and making as much for the stockholders as possible.  Give me a universal health plan throughout the country any day.
Part-timers or IC with Spheris?

I wondered if Spheris hires part-timers and how many hours they can work.  Or if anyone works IC for Spheris?  What is the difference between IC and part time?  I would like to work between 20 to 30 hours a week, maybe a few more but couldn't guarantee 40.

Thanks.

Not at this company. The part timers seem to get the best
and choice of work, the best schedules, and the best of all worlds. Full time are treated like you are the lowest stepping stone in the pond.
Have 2 job offers, one pays 9 cents per 65...sm
character line and the other 11 cents per 85 character line.  I am not sure how to figure the difference so am not sure which might be the better offer line rate wise.  I would SO appreciate some help!
MedQuist pays more. They pay 80% of your
nm
2 part time (totaling 40+/-) 1 pays weekly/1 biweekly.

Weekly for food.  Biweekly for bills.

MedQuist board is now set up. See Medquist link to the left.
Link is also below.
I've known some old timers did the same

Wanted their reports to be lengthy "so they were getting their money's worth".  Nothing was bilateral, everything was "on the right and on the left".

It was like a car mechanic describing your car "The car is red.  The red car has two doors, one on the left and one on the right, both having reddish hues consistent with the general paint scheme.  The red car with left and right doors has door handles, one on the right and another on the left,  The left and right door handles on the left and right doors, respectively, of this red car seem to be working properly: the one on the right opens smoothly, the one on the left opens smoothly as well on this red car.  This is consistent with normal door handles on this red car."  Good grief!

free timers - here's a bunch

VR pays half of what typing pays...
If you would read her post more closely she said she does VR, which pays half of what straight typing does.  I do VR and have made 4 cpl, so 5 is actually good and 4-5 is an industry standard, and may be even less if you are an employee.  The problem is that you have to double your line counts in order to make decent money, which is not always easy.  I embrace VR because I like it better than straight typing, but it is not productive for everyone, no matter how hard you try.
You know how use old timers fixate on our bowel function. nt

Any "long-timers" with Focus Infomatic?

I am thinking about applying to FI and I was wondering if there is anybody out there who has worked for them at least a little while.  I checked some of the archives about Focus but is there anyone who likes working for them?

401K
The answer will depend upon your age and your tolerance of risk. The younger you are, the more aggressive you can be with your fund because time is on your side with markets correcting over time. On the other hand, the older you are, the more conservative you need to be because your time frame to recover from bad markets won't be as long. Only you can determine your tolerance for risk and that depends upon your complete financial picture. HTH.
401K

I have had a Vanguard fund for 15 years. They took care of any changes as I aged;i.e., I'm in the age bracket where I now have 2 growth funds (safe), one aggressive fund, and a another fund which I don't remember what type it is. But when I opened this account with a rollover, I tried to choose a mix of everything, utilities (oil, water, gas, phone, and electric companies), merchandising (Wal-Mart, etc.), franchise restaurants (McDonald's, etc.), health care (drug companies, nursing homes, etc.).

I was a bit mad when they switched my utility account to a "safe" fund. Think how much money I could have now. LOL

Just read your prospectus carefully AND the amount of yearly costs and expenses. That could make a huge difference in your overall "profit".

Ind 401K for self employed

There is a new type of retirement fund for self employed business people where you can put money in as both an employee ($15,000) and as a percentage of your profits as the business owner.  It is called an Ind 401K.  Here is a link...

I wanted to go with T. Rowe Price but they do not allow loans, so i decided to go with Oppenheimer.

I think it's different from 401K matching
but I would think the distribution of it might be different from company to company. I think some companies have profit sharing in the form of stocks and such. Others give bonus checks based on percentage of profit either yearly or quarterly.

Disclaimer: I'm no financial wizard, though. Sorry!
Sure you can. I currently have 2 401K, a Roth
IRA and a traditional IRA.  I will probably roll one of the 401K over into an IRA.
E-MTS has 401K plus match and benefits. Try them.
x
also 401K, % of company contribution, etc...nm
x
Each 401K is a separate entity. You can have...sm
as many as you want. Sure helps with the taxes!
I have what is perhaps a dumb question about 401k plans. Can you have 2? sm

I am starting a part-time job in addition to my full-time job, and they both have 401k plans with matching, so if I could have both, I could get a little extra on both sides.  Somehow, though, I am thinking that probably is not allowed.

Thanks for your input.

plus my company was kind enough to put $4K in my 401k every year...*smiles*
x
Only if they're paying 20+ per/hr with cheap benefits, 401K, and generous vacation time.

The easy part is making the decision to leave, the hard part is
actually doing it.  Been in your shoes and it took me a year and a half to leave after I had made the decision to do so.  It was the best thing I have ever done for myself and my girls.  I had family and friends and a counselor telling me what needed to be done and I knew what needed to be done but until I had the courage on my own to do it I stayed.  One day, we had an argument and he spit in my face and that was the last straw for me.  Even though it is something that I will NEVER forget, that day is also a day I will never forget because it is the day that I took my kids and left.  I am a single mom of 2 and have been single and supporting us for 5 years now.  I have been healing ever since and still am to this day.  You can do this.  I know that if I hadn't have left and I would have stayed one of us would be dead by now or both.
THANK YOU! That is my point. She still pays taxes, her DH still pays taxes...

so who exactly is getting cheated?  And just who are you talking about when you talk about whether it is "fair" or not.  I don't give a crap how much taxes my neighbor pays.  It's none of my business.  And if I found out they were paying less in taxes than me, I would ask them how they heck are they doing it so I can do it too!

I just want ask, is it necessary to get personal and insult?  You disagree with me, fine.  But I've been called a liar, a cheat, a no-ingetrity thief, my intelligence has been insulted, and I have had my parenting skills questioned.  That is a little over the top.  If you cannot debate an issue without resulting to personal attacks, then YOU are the stunted one!

It is a very good thing that some of you work at home, ALONE!  You are sorely lacking in people skills and diplomacy.  Let me guess, when you worked in the office you were one of those girls who didn't like to share her desk, griped if someone dropped a crumb on your desk, and kept track of everyone's breaks, lunches, and line counts just so you could tattle to the supervisor!  I've worked women like you, it was like working with kindergarteners.  That's why I came home to work.  Do us all a favor, looking in the mirror, count your wrinkles, and realize that this isn't high school anymore!

Yes, yes and yes!!! I had so many offers...

after I graduated that I was shocked!  The standard 2-year experience requirement was waived by every company I contacted.

Yes, M-Tec is totally a self-paced, self-study program, but there is also incredible 1-on-1 instructor support.  The program is very comprehensive and definitely not easy but well worth every penny!

If you want a career as an MT, you can't go wrong with M-TEC.

CPL offers
are usually set in motion by what the MTSO is receiving in pay from the facility. As a small MTSO, I am very much restricted by what the facilities are willing to pay me as a vendor. It is an unfortunate circumstance, but it is a sign of the times. There are MTs willing to the work for 8 CPL, and if not, the Nationals outsource it overseas. I think that sums it up in a nutshell....It is a shame, but it is where the industry has gone of late. EMR, VR and outsourcing cutting into what a MTSO can get from the facilities for line rates. Sad but true....I hope you find what you're looking for.
I am not a CMT and I get job offers all of the
much unless you like having initials after your name.  It is not like you can put it on your reports.  XXX/xxx, CMT - can you?  So no one but the company you work for (who probably doesn't care) and you will know... nobody else.  Most CMTs complain they aren't compensated enough anyway, so who gives a hoot?  The only benefit I see is having initials after your name, which unless you are in this field, who knows what that means?  Sounds important, but to have to pay hundreds to test and then to fail only to have to pay hundreds to take it again?????  I'd think that one over and over and over and over... JMO.  A penny more a line???  Just seek out your own account and you'll make lots of extra pennies per line...  believe me!
It is only because no one offers that anymore
nm
I don't think anyone offers PT MTs benefits - sm
at least I have NEVER heard of any. I don't think I have ever even heard of any PT job that had benefits. All you can do is start making phone calls to said companies and ask them. Good luck.
Just because someone offers their opinion,...
and it differs from another's, does not make it negative.  You didn't hear what you wanted to hear in my responses, but that does not mean I am being negative toward you.  I just think you need to do your own work.  Asking for help is one thing, and asking for a handout is entirely different.
You may not need all that MPWord offers.

I've looked at MP Word several times myself and it just more than I need, although in a different setting/situation, I may need all the options. If you have a choice and you have MS Word available to you, you will be fine. You should have an encryption method available to you; WinZip offers encryption with it's Pro version, about $50.

Just something else for you to consider.

When you take on too much work. Getting 2 PT job offers plus have FT with national (sm)

Two local doctors offering me 2-3 hours per day each, plus the FT (about 6 actual hours of typing a day) with a national.

One doctor is orthopedic, the other vascular surgeon (H&Ps in office).  One is a mumbler, the other has a lisp.  The national job is radiology (fairly easy - would be faster if I could master IT, though).

What should I do?  Am afraid I will take on more than I can handle and at same time, refuse a job that I later will regret.  I need the money, needless to say.  Anyone ever face this?

I wonder if the state where you live offers
In Georgia they do have this, and a person who is convicted of a felony and completes the sentence requirements then has their rights restored, such as voting and the ability to officially answer "No" when asked about a felony conviction. Supposedly the information would not be available to a potential employer and most others, though I believe some are still privy to the information.
Does anyone know if IT offers a trial period? sm

From the comments on this post and the post I placed yesterday, I am convinced I would like to try IT.  I hate to spend $189 though and not like it but I do not see on their web site where they offer a money back trial period.  Also, do you know if you download it and have it immediately or if it comes in the mail? Thanks to all who have offered their opinions, it really helps!

Whoa, are you blessed! You see offers out here for 6-8 cpl
s
Only do Free offers - no cc needed!
Take a look at my blog again - even in free offers they are trying to sell you something, you simply say "No Thank you". Also, I included a couple of links that are how-to guides. E-mail me if you need more help or visit the forum. Best wishes!
For Iowa their 12 cpl is good. IHP usually offers...
11 cpl to contractors. If you're from Iowa IHP should be one you recognize, their statewide.

The local service in Waterloo, pays their MTs 6 cpl, ridiculous. Hospitals paying hourly are still around $9 hourly.

It's the midwest, for those others who don't know but cost of living is nothing near other areas of the country.

Personally, I work for a national on the east coast and make 10 cpl employee status, far better than anything I've seen in my home state.
MQ offers PT employees benefits
You have to work 24 hours a week to be eligible.  I don't carry the insurance, so I don't know much else about it, but I'm sure if you read through the MQ board, someone on there will mention it and you can email them.
2 separate companies/offers
x
Medgarde offers PT and just noticed that they ask if you own Lanier.
nm
Obviously, she can or the offers wouldn't be coming out of the woodwork.
I've been turning down offers lately, too.
The place I work already offers 800 numbers for all
inside accounts and most outside accounts as well. Not all are not good to the MTs.
U.S. offers them medical school at a discount
if they remain in the country and practice in out of the way places for a period of time before returning to their country or to a higher wage earning position within the medical establishment.
This is cool...ShortHand offers monthly SM

subscriptions.  I have a free trial right now and was worried I wouldn't have the whole $99 after my trial, but I can buy a subscription and save for another month!  That's so cool!  I didn't know they did that.  Didn't know if others knew, so thought I'd share. :)

Chickadee

Have you seen: Internship offers 3cpl on Job Seekers Bd?
Even as an intern, that should be considered criminal. I don't understand what some companies are thinking when they do that sort of thing.

Just a thought.
Bytescribe offers a 14-day trial (DocShuttle).
xx
Stedman's offers 1/4ly now? Didn't know that. Love it anyway! nm
s
I received 2 job offers from posting here just last week.

I agree... lots of flexibility offers
This is not the only field that offers flexibility or work from home status.  Congrats on your raise!  It's nice to know someone else likes this line of work....
Switch offers free trial so can see if it is what
