My ears are feeling so horrible that I can't stand the feel of my headphones.

I have URI symptoms, saw the doc yesterday.  Has anyone ever not used their headphones and used the speaker instead.  I'm concerned that I won't be as accurate.  Any suggestions for me?  Thanks.

You could use headphones that go over the ears
over your hearing aids, such as the noise-canceling headphones. I would assume this would work just fine. I don't like to wear my noise-canceling headphones because they get too hot, however.
Oh please, somebody tried to make me feel guilty for leaving a horrible job using this same line.
How much $$ it cost to train ME.  Like I should feel sorry for the company who basically misled me every step of the way regarding hiring, training, accounts, etc., etc. The job was a horrible fit, and I stayed way longer out of guilt. Not worth it! Conditions are deplorable enough for the MTs right now - we don't need to now assume responsibility for how much or how little a company spends to train us. PLEASE!!
I too am feeling the same.. almost in tears and really feel like quitting altogether!! So you are n

No, I do not feel that way, but I understand. A few years ago, I was feeling similar, but
when I look at what I make an hour ($30-40) who is going to pay me that without a Masters? I have it pretty darn good and will see it through until retirement - about 30 years from now (hopefully if I live that long) LOL.

You just need to find a good paying company or hospital and you will feel much better. The healthcare industry is here to stay, whether it be VR or offshoring. Most hospitals are bringing MT back in house. Not all hospitals agree with offshoring out of the country. There is a big world out there - go get em. Don't be discouraged.

Horrible, horrible place to work. nm

Horrible, horrible platform. Not
user friendly at all.  The best tip I can give you is don't do it.
I'm all ears
I am totally frustrated myself and so ready for a change. Trust me, I can relate.
Protect ears where you can
I recently bought a new blow dryer that is louder than my old one. I have started putting cotton in my ears while blow drying, and it muffles the high, painful whine. I suddenly have more patience with styling my hair, so I guess it may have been bothering me before this, too, and I didn't realize why I could hardly wait to finish.
definitely UNFAIR. You are our 2nd set of ears and still MTs. NM

OMG - My ears are always itchy - I actually
have an "ear itcher" that I keep on my desk - kinda gross, but what can ya do. I thought it was just me. I don't think I could go without them though, I work too much and my ears get sore. I guess I'll try Radioshack and Staples, if not, I guess I'll get them online. Thanks
My aching ears

Hi everyone!  Just wondering if you all have suggestions for inexpensive headphones that don't hurt your ears, but have good sound quality.  I have 2 different ones that I use and I prefer the sound quality of my little "bud" type, but they end up really hurting my ears after several hours of use.  The other are much more comfortable, but I lose sound quality.  I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds -- oh, and inexpensively, too!!   (I don't ask for much, huh?)

Take care all!

and most of them have cellphones stuck in their ears. nm

Unfortunately, it will fall on deaf ears.
But give it a shot.

Sorry no wonder you are so down on being a Transcriptionist as it is evident you have problems spelling.

Ears now beat red and they are off for good.

My ears are not beat red and killing me.  I love the NC and they help quite ambient noise even with the feature off but wowzers.  Back to my cheapos for me.  I may try the Koss headphones and see if they are any better.  Hubby is not working so he gets to do all the running. He is going to kill me.

I have real hearing loss (30%) in both ears and
was recommended to get 2 hearing aids, but did you ever price those things? 1200 for one? So I got one. I barely use it. I can't use it for work as it isn't small enough to accomodate the headphones. But since I got on DEP, the only good thing about it is the voice comes through the speaker right into my headset so I actually have to turn it DOWN. I was evaluated and wanted to hear so bad that it was work related but they say mine is congenital, and with a little digging into my family's history I realize that it is. I do know plenty of MTs, however, who do have credible hearing loss with no other factors. I mean, come on, how could you not? The secret is to keep the volume as LOW as you can stand it to try and avoid any loss. I also have terrible ringing and think that is job related.
My daughter is 17 and has never wanted her ears pierced!
She has always been involved in sports and would have to take them out during a game or put a band-aid over them. I wanted that to be something she wanted, and she has never wanted her ears pierced. For prom we bought clip-ons and they looked pretty nice. I was afriad they would be tacky. She might want to get them pierced before next prom but, again, that will be HER decision.

snot suckers, in our ears, like they don't know we hear that

Harder on my eyes than my ears but I find it hard to

believe that listening to dictation could cause hearing loss.  Blasting music through headphones maybe, but not dictation.  I've been doing this for 20 years and have not noticed any difference in my hearing.

However, my eyes get soooooo tired.  I've started zooming in to make the print look bigger and that helps a lot.

Once a week, I clean my headset ears with alcohol.
Then swab out my ears after showering with Q-tips with alcohol on them. Keeps the itching down to nothing, and the ear wax doesn't build up that way, either.
Ears itch b/c of ear sponge bacteria (mine did)

Take off the sponges and clean the actual headset with rubbing alcohol damply applied to a towel, then replace the sponges.  Do this periodically.  Also, replace the sponges every month or so, especially in hot weather.

I have a pair of the earbuds (cheap ones) and they hurt my ears.
I couldn't wear them very long.
Actually it's years to ears. I can spell just fine, just don't take the time to proofread eve
post as I'm busy transcribing at the same time.  Sorry to say my priorities are such that you guys here don't rank perfect posts.  Now, if you guys want to pay per post....

I have drainage too and a ton of ear wax! YUK! I lavage my ears with a bulb syringe and warm saline

about once a month or they will start to itch something fierce.  Nobody tells you about the ear hazards of being an MT, do they?  I also have to deal with recurrent bouts of labrynthitis which my doc has said may be a side effect of ear phones in my ears all day long!

We should get hazard pay or worker's comp!

I notice sometimes the dictation goes directly from ears-to-hands. Bypasses the brain entirely! n/

I learned to put my phones in front of my ears inbetween dictations so I don't get blasted.

Yes, they are HORRIBLE
LIES, LIES, LIES. Line stealers, no help. There are plenty of other companies to work for. Please don't let Soft Script ruin you as an MT. Good luck.
They are horrible, horrible, horrible.
They advertise about how skilled their MTs are, yet they are recruiting MTs straight out of school.  You need to start somewhere to get training, but you'll be sorry if you work for this company.  They'll pay you peanuts and try to steal some of that, treat you like a dog and just leave you broken.
This is horrible!
Wow that is insane! I worked in medical records while training in coding and transcription. I was responsible for mailing the reports out. I made sure I got them out daily. The girl before me would hold them and the girl after me did the same thing. I never understood it. Those doctors need those for patient care. This is besides the fact that it just causes more work as the doctors will end up calling for the reports and someone will have to fax it to them if they need it whereas if they were sent right away time would have been saved on this. I think this is horrible as it ultimately will affect patient care not to mention productivity. In my opinion there is no excuse for this!
I used to have 1 PA who was horrible. Every

report was 20 to 30 minutes because he was such a bad dictator and was very disorganized.  He always said "thank you for this dictation" at the end of every report.

I have several docs currently who say thank you at the end, some will say have a good weekend or happy holiday too.

How horrible!
My prayers are with her and her son.. I have a 3 year old son and hearing this makes my heart break for them!
That's horrible!
I would definitly take these findings to the company. Your initials are on those reports, and it could come back on you, not to mention what could happen to the patients whose medical records are being changed. I wouldn't hesitate. What a sad way for people to act!
that's horrible!
Gosh, I cannot imagine working for even one week without being paid!  You surely have my sympathy.  Wish we could think of a way to REALLY get the word out about them - like a full page newspaper ad or something.  Wander if the Better Business Bureau would be appropriate?  Or at least the Labor Board?
pay is horrible
That is funny cuz I had gotten an email stating that the starting pay is .5 cents a line 1-1200. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And that is not VR!!!
I do it too; it IS horrible nm

OMG, how horrible!
AHDI used to be AAMT, and it was my understanding that for what it's worth nowadays (IMO, zilch), the CMT credential was available only from AHDI (AAMT) after at least three years as a practitioner. This was a few years ago.

It's hard to believe that these unscrupulous places are victimizing those who don't know any better. One place to submit a complaint would be the Better Business Bureau.

This just sux. :(
OMG! How horrible! nm

It is a horrible shame
because I have loved my job at the hospital and I still do love my work there, but MQ has put us in a position where we really have little choice, but to take a tremendous cut in pay or leave and if we leave, our options are limited.... no benefits (IC) or less money with fewer benefits.
No work - it's horrible sm
I just finished doing my resume. There has to be something better than this out there. Today, I rotated through 6 or 7 accounts, one job at a time from each one. Had to keep checking the profiles and was so worried that I would mess something up.

I just got the Points review in the mail today, it was done back in July. I was doing 6 or 7 accounts at that time as well. I got BIG DEDUCTIONS for having a formatting error in an account that I almost never get to type.

I am so very very sad. I used to love MQ. Guess those days are in the past
Horrible place
I would not recommend it
That is horrible! I'm speechless. nm

Mine were horrible and now I only
have one day of crying for about an hour and then remember, oh, I must be having a period today! I was having them 17 days apart with breakthrough and heavy, I mean heavy cycles...2 pads changed every 45 minutes the first 2 days. The worst part was the emotional roller coaster. I would stand in the shower and cry all day on the day before, not knowing why, then understanding the next day.

I took my PMS cocktail. First I tried Tylenol. After an hour if no relief, I took Annaprox. After an hour if no relief, I took a 5 mg Valium. If after an hour if no relief, I stopped working and started drinking...heavily!

Now I don't know I even have them except for that one stupid hour of crying about every 2-1/2 weeks!
You have done all you can to protect others, then. It's really horrible. I'm so sorry.
(nm)
That is horrible. I'm so sorry for your loss (sm)
Those animals should be outlawed as well as the people who train them to kill. We have a Golden Retriever who is the sweetest thing in the world and we love her and she wouldn't hurt a fly. I am an animal lover but I do not like pit bulls. I also have small children and I'm thankful no one in our neighborhood has a pit bull. Again, I'm so sorry for your horrible loss.
Yes, it was bad, but they can take an every horrible voice
and make it better in a recording. She does not have a horrible voice, just not the strong voice that she THINKS she has. It will be a lot better when released on a DVD, just watch and see.
