Reply to posting 'Looking up words'...MT way too long...sm

Posted By: == on 2009-05-08
In Reply to: Looking up words. I see sm - MT way too long!

I checked all he questions posted on the Word help board during 2 days, May 8 and 9, and found ONLY 1 question that the poster could have looked up herself and was not really justifiable to be asked on the board, namely...

---------------

How do I transcribe this?

The patient will return in four weeks/weeks' time.

So, why make a big issue out of this, dear 'MT way too long?'

I mean comeback using long words nobody knows the meaning of, he-he nm

Those would probably be the LAST words out of her mouth for a long time

Lots of 'em, but use a Lab Words, Sted's Ortho/Rehab Words, & Tessier's Surgical Words most
s
Stedman's Ortho and Rehab words. You'll keep researching screws & pins as long as you do
s
You'll need a lab words book and maybe the Derm and Immunology Words..nm
s
Not to flame but every day there's posting after posting about how awful MQ is

Why does anyone still work there?

I don't get it.

Stedmans Med $ Surgical Equip words, Path and Lab words, and Tessiers Surgical Word book (3rd
edition).  I never buy drug books anymore.  Waist of money in my opinion.  New drugs come out so often, it's best to use the web.
Email reply vs. Post Reply
Could someone tell me how to post a message and then have someone reply by email instead of just "Post Reply."  I'm pretty new to this "chat" board.  But I WOULD like to say it is VERY informative and helpful.  Too bad some of the companies we work for aren't as helpful as one MT is to another MT.  We'd have it made!!
The Sted's Ortho & Rehab Words is probably my most used book and then the Lab Words book. GL! nm

I hate Instant Text. It is expensive, long long learning
curve, and too much distraction for me.
How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some.  Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not.  I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position.  Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this.  Thanks again for any advice.
Congrats! How long have you been a MLS and how long did you study for the test!

Please see message. I have three daughters with long, long hair.
I also have long hair down to my waist and my three girls have hair that long too. My daughter brought them home from school last year. I was devestated and grossed out!!!! I have never had to deal with lice. Anyway, we did the treatments and two of my girls broke out in a severe rash with the OTC stuff. Their little heads were so sore!! I thought I was being meticulous with eggs, only to find them hatching again down the road. A nurse at the pediatricians office suggested I try oil to suffocate them since my girls were allergic to the lice solution. I bought a huge bottle of veggie oil and dumped it on all three heads, plus my own. I then wrapped the heads in platic wrap and then a towel. I left this on for 30 minutes. It takes a while to wash out the oil, but we never, ever had the lice or eggs again!!! If you try this, make sure you put on an old shirt and put a towel around your shoulders. Obviously we were desperate, but we all have such long hair and very thick hair so I was willing to try anything. And I figured there was no chemicals involved so that was pretty safe. And it sure did help my littles ones since their scalps were pretty raw from the solution. Hope this helps and Good luck!
It's been a long, long time since I've used a C-phone, sm
but I do think jobs can be paused.
I had a problem with this for a long, long time sm
I have always worked days, like from 6-3. Over the last few years, it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I became real groggy between 7 and 11. Really shoots the day. Talked to my doctor and he said my blood pressure pills were the culprit but he refused to change me to another brand or dosage since I have multiple aneurysms (2 in the brain). My BP has been stable for a long time and he wants to "keep it on the low side". I tried taking them before I went to bed instead of early in the morning, but then I had headaches all day. So, I am changing to a night shift for a few months so I can sleep when those pills kick in and so far it is working pretty good. I stay mostly awake during my shift and die when I hit the bed from 6 am to 10 am, then I lay down again later in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. I still get 6-7 hours of sleep, it's just split up during the day, plus I am mostly awake now when I sit down to type. I don't have to deal with the heat in my office, either. It tends to warm up real fast in here with the south sun on the house and 2 pc's running all day, even with the air conditioner on.
Way back when, a long, long time
ago and in a galaxy far, far away, I had my own accounts also and some years cleared $75,000.  Yes it can be done, but you need to have your own accounts.  Also lots of delivery, and other duties involved.  I work for a large national now and make much less, but I got tired of accountants, having to deal with hardware problems, deadlines, driving deliveries, printing, printers, etc.  So I decided to simplify my taxes and stay home and just type.  Don't have to worry about computers either, because the company will just send me a new one.
Long, long files. Seemed like they'd never end! I'd never go back to VA again. nm

I've been doing this a long, long time...

I used to make $70,000 and up a year and did so for most of the late 80s and 90s (one girl used to make six figures a year working 7 days a week!)  Because we were making more money than the supervisors and Medical Records Directors in hospitals, they began to switch to transcription services which were sprouting up all over the place.  Plus AAMT came into existence and even though in the beginning it claimed it was to fight for transcriptionists (although assured us it was NOT a union), they eventually morphed into an organization that was more management friendly.  They developed the "guidelines" and the 65-char line.  That was the beginning of the end for those high-end wages.  Then all those mickey mouse transcription schools popped up, and now outsourcing overseas.  YES, we're complaining.

Been in this biz a long, long time, 30+ years and....sm
I love/loved MTing. However, things have changed so much during these years. The job definitely gets easier; don't have to look up much, can decipher ESLs much easier, in other words, you get pretty comfortable with things and you have confidence in yourself. The more experience you have the easier the job, but....

I actually made more money 10 years ago!! We didn't have speech recognition and you actually got paid for headers/footers, demographics, carbon copies, etc., you got paid for what you did fairly; today, I am not so sure.

You will feel burned out at times, but that passes and you find you like your job again.

Good luck to you!!
A long, long time ago, I was going thru
a really bad time emotionally and physically. I was suffering, and my transcribing suffered. I assure you - if you are to the point of not paying your rent, literally, and needing food stamps, there is something else going on in your life than current transcription rates. We are all in this industry and many are thriving, most getting along comfortably. If you are literally to the point of food stamps, you honestly would be a fool to continue. I blamed it on my job, on my line rate, on everything but the honest truth that I was ill and was NOT working as I should or could. It is a really sad thing that you keep spreading this propaganda that MTs in our culture are doomed and now destined for food stamps. Food stamps are not something to toss around lightly, as you would know if you ever had to use them. Please let's not be quite so dramatic. Again, if you are really in those dire straits, you really need to face that MTing is not the fit for you, personally, and do something about it rather than blame our industry. You dwell on the past, but we can't do that. While you may have made other wages 20 years ago, may I remind you that we were pounding away on IBM Selectrics using layers of paper and bottles of white out, going crazy trying to rewind tapes over and over to get that dang word, with no idea what an Expander was. Technology is fantastic. Things have changed, but things are still great in this industry, and in this world. Those who change and can adapt will be fine, but you need to recognize that most of us are not ready for food stamps.
Sure did...you been around for a long, long year

I KEEP POSTING ON HERE
What MQ is really doing and how they are crookedly counting lines, but someone keeps deleting my post.
Done! Thanx for posting this!! (nm)
.
I am not the only one posting here.
Others see it too because they are responding as well. I don't think that you are Zipper in the least. If you would notice the posts from Zipper, Frankie Boy and No whining the wording is almost exactly the same in their posts and Barney is defending them. If you ever saw the posts from Frankie Boy and Zipper, they were extremely offensive. No one in their right mind would think they are funny or want them back on the board.
thanks to all for posting
your post touched me most because i about your same age (52) and now have a 3 yr old to ride. I tried to send to your e/m but it wouldn't send (said invalid e/mail)... My husband told me (ex-racerider) to ride in the corral til we got used to each other -- i thought, 2 hours in a corral? -- i've always just rode out in the open...but now i find that i've spent these last 3 wk exclusively in the corral except for 2 outings when a friend could go with me. I feel like all my molecules have started to respond to the movement under me again (pretty rusty), but was totally upset by those feelings of *&#%# ?? Hate to call it fear, because i have felt true fear before and this was different. But it was totally new to me and i didn't like it. Yesterday was better. I always had so much confidence before and its making me doubt myself to have had these fleeting feelings that day. This is probably about the best colt to have if i'm starting with a young horse (which i also didn't plan on doing, another story); he's been well-started and basically laid back and level headed...again, thanks for your post (and to all). jml
Thanks for posting this...

Some of my stuff has been acting weird, too.  Just curious...have you tried uninstalling the Update w/ Service Pack?  Long story short, my DBF is in IT, said to uninstall the update, but when I tried it said "this update cannot be uninstalled."  Oh great!!!  Guess I should have known to have him install a Service Pack manually.  They can screw things up big-time sometimes if they're not done right.

Anyway, ditto on the heads up folks.

Thanks for posting that ...
I'm a real sucker for cute animal stuff ... now I want a squirrel LOL

I am sorry about posting this here, but
I need help asap.  I asked on the tech board about a couple of things:  1.  Since I installed VWPlayer on my PC, it has been running a lot slower and my screen has been freezing causing me to lose jobs.  Also, everywhere I look for directions on backing up autocorrect, it says something about look in C:ProgramFilesMicrosoftOffice and then it says office10, but my only option is to look in Office and when I do, it does not say macros.  I have MS Word 2000 if that helps.  Also, I just recently added some memory (going from 128 to 384 after addng 256)  Are there any techies around?  Thanks for all your help!!
Thanks for posting...
hat is what I make now as an MT, of course, which is par.

do they have a different name/classification/description now for that job duty?

the AAMT is always boasting how they are going to help transition MTs into the technology, but have yet to offer ANYthing more, as to how, when, for whom, etc.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this does not mean a cut in pay...

appreciate the input...

Post anytime. We all make mistakes and we all have been there. I posted something upset and I've been in the business for years. I got some smart mouthed answers and I received help that discounted that, so it evened out. Posting is good for you, you are as sick as your secrets and I am not going to judge anyone who posts upset. That's a good thing, get it off your chest. Don't run away. Stay and we'll support you IMHO. Good luck to you, sounds like you're having a tough time. Been there, done that, I showed up 2 hours late for a TAT in my black dress and got a nasty remark. I buried my Dad at 9:00 and went at 11:00 am to return my work. I said, "I just buried my Dad this morning." Didn't make a darned bit of difference. You get no sympathy from TAT excuses, believe me, one doc told me he didn't care who died, he just wanted his work. Stay, please.
She was posting under a different name

so, honestly, I'm new, what is THIS board for?
I think some of those are posting, above.

Thanks for posting
I imagine those shows do over dramatize everything. But I do hope it really did give your husband an overall appreciation for what you do. I work part-time, I couldn't even imagine working full-time and doing all of my mom/wife/housekeeper duties.

Yes, thanks for posting...SM
You can't always believe what you see on TV. All of that is edited to make for better ratings. It seemed like you both gained a little something from the experience though, so that is a plus.

If you don't mind me asking, what made you both decide you wanted to go on the show?
you are the one who is posting under different--sm
names, you little troll you. why don't you just stay off this board, Kikki, if you just hate everything, everybody, and your own life so much. you are pathetic. You had better find yourself some help. We all know who you are. The only one you are fooling is yourself. You are truly the devils spawn...and maybe you had better look that up to know what it means. go away!
where did my posting go?
I just posted something less than an hour ago about input on companies. Now it is not here?
Why don't you try posting it
on the job seeker's board that you need overflow/vacation help?  You may find some candidates that are willing to help.  If it needs to be local then state that the candidate would need to live in that area.  Just a suggestion.  Good luck.  Some transcriptionists like to help out and to try something different.  It is also a great way to network and meet new people.
thank you for posting this

I saw a similar ad, maybe the same one as you, and I too wondered how much could be done in an hour.  It sounded like it could be fascinating but I too was apprehensive about how complicated it would be and what the hourly pay would amount to.

I used to do this kind of thing back in the 80s and charged at a minimum $25 an hour based on the time it took me to transcribe.  I got plenty of work, but it was often a headache trying to follow along and keep track of who was saying what, etc.  If it was really difficult, I'd contact them after an hour or so into it and tell them it was going to be pretty expensive and give them the option of taking it elsewhere.  They usually told me to keep going and they'd pay whatever it cost and then tell their friends so I'd keep getting more and more of it.  Sometimes it seemed like no amount of money was worth the hassle of it!!

thank you for posting that....
a lot of us who work for -you know who- are really vulnerable right now because we are looking for an out. If it sounds to good to be true it usually is.
Try posting this on
the company board. I have also read a lot of negative things about them, actually just after I turned down an offer by them for another job. Sounds like I might have made the right decision but again, post on the company board and I'm sure you'll get feedback there.
Wow, with so many posting here
I think making over 40 thousand a year is a good living, for this job. I don't know why so many say they can't pay their bills or this profession pays less than minimum wage. Last I heard, minimum wage is way less than 50 thousand a year, and also being able to stay home. That, to me, is a good living wage. I don't make 50 thousand, but I would like to and am going to try.
LOL! Thanks for posting this.

Re-posting

Just re-posting about speakers, as I did not get any responses: Note: I have the couple speaker brands that were originally mentioned written down.

I would like to get away from headphones too.

Where do I find those speakers mentioned (or other good ones I can use)?

Right now I am plugging my headphones into $30 speakers I got at Best Buy. They sound crappy without my headphones.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I do not know how to post a subject line without posting a message as well. Sometimes just a word or two would do, but it will not get accepted if I don't include a message??? Thanks in advance.
OMG, sorry for posting like this, but . . .
if you haven't in a while, you need to defrag computer, preferably after you run these programs.  Actually, there is so much information out there which can be confusing and, like I said, daunting, but please choose what's best for you.  I'm sure others here have great ideas too - shoot, I could always use help too.
LOL! Thanks for posting this. nm
