We have to stand firm for the Americans of the future here!

In Reply to: Done with Walmart too.....sm - Walmart and what they are doing..

When the trade agreement was signed with China, the imbalance of imports and exports was not suspected to occur since they have like a trillion residents. Did not happen as they had anticipated.

Think again of the cheap merchandise coming our way. It turns into garbage within two years most often since it isn't built to pass the test of time (unlike higher priced American and German products). So, the tons of imports turn into tons of landfill. Pollution is what is basically ends up being.

And yes, I do believe China will not stop until it is in a position to control the world economy.

I waited for coverage of the currency in China which they took off the world market. This will cause, or should cause, Wal-Mart prices to go up and allow other stores to continue competing (and providing jobs within this country) in the American market.

This is appalling.

What is name of law firm

I lost my link to the firm darn it.

You know, not all MTs have gotten checks.

And last I talked to the attorney at the law firm putting together the class action suit for the MTs, they were no where near even getting the suit to a class action stage because it was going to have to be probably handled up in NJ!!!

So, yeah, I'd watch real close about cashing those checks.  It may be a "trick" on the part of MQ that releases them from their obligation to you for anything else.

Law firm's name
Drew, Eckl, & Farnham, LLP.  They are interested in hearing from the MTs
You have to be firm
The schedule itself doesn't really matter, I don't think. I personally work 1 hour without interruptions and take a break, then another hour, etc.

I had my son's friend's mother tell (yes, TELL) me that her son was walking home with mine and she'd pick him up later. I could tell she was stressed and needed a break, but I said I was working and that didn't work for me. She still acted reluctant to change the plan. Finally, I said "Our motto is if I don't work, we don't eat". She immediately back off and came to pick up her son.
MQ using new recruiting firm. sm

Anyone else get a totally unsolicited letter from a recruiter?  The initial letter sounded wonderful, lots of promises, great bennies, etc., no company name.  When I wrote and asked for information, it turns out this person is recruiting for MQ and singing their praises.  When I said I would not work for MQ, as they offshore, her reply was:

"There are many companies who outsource overseas, I am curious how you found out which ones do and which don't.  I cannot think of any national who does not source overseas outside of MedQuist's new changing."

Personally, with all the lawsuits, MQ had no choice left but to change.  Cheating clients, cheating MTs, sending work offshore and the list goes on.  And this person thinks we are too dumb to figure all this out.  I mean, how in the world could any of us possibly know or be concerned about what MQ has done!  It's insulting.  The fact is, this person is ill-informed. There are many nationals who do not outsource offshore and who have taken an oath not to.  Also, many clients are writing clauses into their contracts that the work is not to be offshored.  MQ thinks we are a bunch of idiots. That has always been a big mistake on their part.

firm 15 cpl --you will lose it
Sorry but at 15 you will lose it.  Once you get used to the dictators you will easily make $35 to $45 per hour even counting in the delivery time.  Define your line as gross lines with 1" margins and if they want smaller ones, then you revert back and do your line count that way.  If you want to cover yourself, tell them that at 12 cpl you want it written up in the contract that should they cancel at anytime  -- unless it is due to gross errors, incorrect billing (cheating them), not keeping TAT, etc. that they  will pay your average paycheck for the term of the contract. Again look at what you can make per hour not what the cpl is.  If you come across too high, they will advertise and get someone for the 12 easily.   Good luck.   Get it all spelled out ini black and white.  Also go back at 12.5 -- again good luck
The problem is they are too big. No increasing needs to be done. I just need to firm them somehow!

Insurance Transcription Firm
I am with the largest insurance transcription firm in the U.S. -- we are always looking for great transcriptionists and have plenty of work....
They are a recruiting firm, but they represent some

of the same companies that post ads here.   They make it sound like they have a client base of all the MT companies, you apply with them and they match you with the company that best suits your needs, but they only represent a  few companies, and they may or may not be a good fit for you.  If you reject an offer with the company they refer you to you never hear from them again.   You don't get a better rate going through TM.

They are a legitimate though.

Looked at the info on law firm site and
it looks like all the platforms are involved in this. Anyone heard from the law firm as to what is going on at present with the class action and how long it takes to get the thing moved to NJ and in process?
Not company - it was a private firm's offer. nm
.
Idea for a new transcription service. We are looking for some ideas to firm things up. TIA. sm

Here is the basic structure:

All work kept in the United States.  Recent graduates of either a 2-year community college program or one of the better distance learning courses.

We are thinking of opening a combination office/training center.  Half will be recent grads.  Half will be seasoned MTs who like to mentor.

The seasoned MTs will get an hourly with a line incentive as there will be time taken away to be second ear for the newbies, more in the beginning, less as time goes on.

The newbies will have to be in-house at the company for one year on either 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift.

The newbies will receive either by the line or by the hour, have not decided.

What do you think would be a fair hourly for the new grad?  For the seasoned MT who will be transcribing their own work and mentoring.

We want to be generous without going bankrupt.

Do you all think the idea is a good one?

If you could work in house at a company with good benefits would you prefer that to working at home?

Just looking for some input.  It looks good to us, but outside opinions really can be eye-openers.

This is an established company, so there would be plenty of work.  All of our MTs are home-based now, but not sure if everyone really wants to be home-based.  We are near a major metropolitan area, so finding the MTs should not be a problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

As Americans....
All I see us doing is "convicting" Natalee and her mother.  I just want to know why some come to the defense of the ones that are thought may be guilty and the ones that are actually being held, yet at the same time are so ready to tear apart the victim and her family.  I mean come on, let's complain about the mom's make up for crying out loud, or the fact that she is distraught and saying things that aren't right.  PLEASE PEOPLE.  Get real.
Believe me, when we Americans are
fed up with anything something will be done!!  What do you think the original American Revolution was about???  I know, I know....so many Americans have become just "sit on your butts watching TV and let someone else handle it" idiot!  But I do have faith in plain ole common horse sense.  This is our country and we must do and shall do what is necessary to keep it that way.  People will rise up when the situation gets bad enough and quite honestly, I think we are almost there, don't you?
spy on all Americans....did you not...sm

Did you NOT see all the newswires on this very subject about the govt spying via Google's new desktop?  Read and then go to Google and read some more!!

Google Copies Your Hard Drive - Government Smiles in Anticipation

Consumers Should Not Use New Google Desktop

San Francisco - Google today announced a new "feature" of its Google Desktop software that greatly increases the risk to consumer privacy. If a consumer chooses to use it, the new "Search Across Computers" feature will store copies of the user's Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets and other text-based documents on Google's own servers, to enable searching from any one of the user's computers. EFF urges consumers not to use this feature, because it will make their personal data more vulnerable to subpoenas from the government and possibly private litigants, while providing a convenient one-stop-shop for hackers who've obtained a user's Google password.

"Coming on the heels of serious consumer concern about government snooping into Google's search logs, it's shocking that Google expects its users to now trust it with the contents of their personal computers," said EFF Staff Attorney Kevin Bankston. "If you use the Search Across Computers feature and don't configure Google Desktop very carefully—and most people won't—Google will have copies of your tax returns, love letters, business records, financial and medical files, and whatever other text-based documents the Desktop software can index. The government could then demand these personal files with only a subpoena rather than the search warrant it would need to seize the same things from your home or business, and in many cases you wouldn't even be notified in time to challenge it. Other litigants—your spouse, your business partners or rivals, whoever—could also try to cut out the middleman (you) and subpoena Google for your files."

The privacy problem arises because the Electronic Communication Privacy Act of 1986, or ECPA, gives only limited privacy protection to emails and other files that are stored with online service providers—much less privacy than the legal protections for the same information when it's on your computer at home. And even that lower level of legal protection could disappear if Google uses your data for marketing purposes. Google says it is not yet scanning the files it copies from your hard drive in order to serve targeted advertising, but it hasn't ruled out the possibility, and Google's current privacy policy appears to allow it.

"This Google product highlights a key privacy problem in the digital age," said Cindy Cohn, EFF's Legal Director. "Many Internet innovations involve storing personal files on a service provider's computer, but under outdated laws, consumers who want to use these new technologies have to surrender their privacy rights. If Google wants consumers to trust it to store copies of personal computer files, emails, search histories and chat logs, and still 'not be evil,' it should stand with EFF and demand that Congress update the privacy laws to better reflect life in the wired world."

You all must be the Americans sm
Do you have any idea how it feels to natives of other countries who speak a different language, when Americans go there and insist that everyone speak English with them? Not even the courtesy of being able to say please or thank you in any language other than English. It is rude. It is selfish and it is no wonder that much of world holds this opinion of Americans...rude, selfish, bigoted and mean!

Not only that, I have been around these boards long enough to notice that MOST OF YOU aren't very articulate. I watch many of those acting as "grammar police" are no better. So many of you cannot spell and will not learn (or even use the spellchecker). Overall, many if not most of your have a rather tenuous grasp of the English language. It is sad to remember that you all are MTs.
please don't condemn ALL americans...sm

PLEASE do NOT condemn ALL Americans for what the Ignorant Americans do......most Americans are NOT this ignorant and would never do something like some of these people *owned* up to doing.....

HE is disrespectful of ALL Americans
She is completely right. She has a right to her opinion and she is free to express it on this board. This man has disgraced us on the world stage and is not deserving of respect in my opinion. He certainly did not respect the 3500+ soldiers that died fighting a trumped up war. He does not respect the American people when he disdains public opinion and pushes his own agenda. This is a free board and as far as I know nobody's children have any desire to read anything on this board.
Most difficult: Americans!
I absolutely cannot get the American accents in which the doc sounds like he/she is running an auction. At least with the ESLs I can get into the rhythm. Not with these guys. Although once I figure out what a grunt or a cough means I make a normal LOL.
I had some decent Americans,
some decent nurses, and then started getting probably the worst dictator on my account. Is 15 blanks a problem? :o}

It is because she HAS a job, which many Americans would love to have right now.
She is going to quit her job to get the assistance. She is not in need of it as she thinks she is. When people abuse the system, it runs funds down and then the people that truly need the help don't get assistance. If she in fact had lost her job, I would feel differently, but she has a paying job. Why can't she use the money she earns to pay for insurance? If what the posters below are saying is true, this is not a surprise pregnancy, but planned. Shouldn't they have included in their plan to have a baby a way to pay for it? I would love to have another kid, but I would never dream to do it on taxpayer money. Why should someone else have to pay? That is what I wrong with America. Too many feel so entitled to live the life they want yet don't want to work for it.
Opinion of Millions of Americans
Hate to tell you, Bush lover, this is the opinion of millions of Americans..Shrub is a failure, a jerk, an idiot, a warmonger.  This country has not been this divided and torn apart since the Vietnam war.  Bush was a uniter and compassionate conservative, yeah, right..The guy is a lying murderer and he alienates the world and half of American from him and his followers, who follow blindly, even though we have proof he lied about this illegal war, his advisor, Rove, outed a CIA operative and so much more..The guy is terrible and thank GOD he will be gone in three years.
Americans don't want to work...that is just hogwash.

not that Americans dont want to work, we just

What we deserve, but paid what it actually costs to LIVE in America, to afford the insanely high medical care, insanely high gas, insanely high food, etc.  We can never work for less than what we get because we'd then have to move to a different country where we can afford their cost of living.  Its all backwards.  Thats why CEOs are all slime...they're sitting pretty up there and do not care what goes on because they're comfortable and well taken care of.

What's really sick is when Americans can't understand
plain and simple sarcasm
I tell them they are taking jobs from Americans and...

I do not do business with anyone not in the U.S.A..  I try to say it very nicely, though.  I totally resent having my financial records (let alone medical records) in the hands of other countries!

If everyone would refuse to deal with them, U.S. companies would be forced to bring the work back home.

oh yeah, like white americans and others...sm

another one who needs their head examined - blaming all the crime in America on illegal aliens.....you're very sick......

Just look at the predators going after kids - NOT ONE IS EVER FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY - only white trailer park trash oh and priests.......pedophiliacs......

Gang rapes - usually done by white men.......

drugs were around way before the illegal aliens - street gangs were around before illegal aliens (think MAFIA and then Bloods and Crips)........

Geesh - you need to just quit posting is all....ill-educated as far as the street goes, eh?

look in the mirror before you falsly accuse Immigrants!!

Trailer park trash has been on the welfare rolls for 4 decades in this country!!  They keep having more babies thinking they can stay on forever.  Good thing the welfare laws are changing!!

regarding post below - How not to hire Americans
I sent an e-mail to Hillary Clinton's website with the article and video - visit and leave your comments - democrat or republican - I just want an American to work on this very important topic. Low or middle class - to strengthen it we need our jobs - not to mention the security of our personal information by not off shoring.

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/middleclass/

Now I am off to visit other politicians websites.
Many newbies and even oldies and VR - Americans only.

If it weren't for us Americans, he wouldn't be the star

Huh? Your logic is amusing. She deserves Americans looking for her?
That's just not how its done, as the poster below for eloquently explains!
Ditto. I hope you others realize that most Americans are NOT this way. nm
x
Bullfeathers. Americans work the longest hours.

We average 1960+ hours worked per year.  Google "Americans work the longest hours".  Nobody else can touch us.  Provide us with a link proving your theory that Americans don't want to work.  Young people want to work as well.  Every young person I know of is working on top of going to school fulltime.  Maybe it's just the people you know who don't want to work, because I can tell you that everyone in my family has a good work ethic.  Google "American youth don't want to work".  Oopsy, no hits.  Guess that blows your theory.

Gee, I dunno. Maybe since you find Americans fat and arrogant is a start
so we're stuck with your nasty ol' hair-ball self
I hope you realize not all Americans are this nasty and arrogant.
ss
I will only agree with outsourcing and off-shoring when Americans have carte

are going to.  Like, the companies that enjoy the protection and luxuries of operating out of the United States -- when those companies work deals with the COUNTRIES they are allowed to send our jobs to SO THAT WE CAN VISIT, MOVE TO, EXPLORE, SHOP IN........when we can go to those very same countries without question, passport, or visa, then I will say I will not fight off-shoring and outsourcing.

But the way it is now......basically we are being held PRISONERS IN OUR OWN COUNTRY while our JOBS ARE GOING OUT THE DOOR.

Americans should be so lucky as to be paid what some Canadian transcriptionists are.

Job security, union jobs, full benefits, 1 year of maternity leave, parental leave, vacation time, sick time, $18 or more an hour...

Glen Beck right now: How not to hire Americans video!!!

Maybe she should have stayed in America where Americans look for drunken teens everyday.
If you go to a foreign country, you are under their laws and their policing.  If you don't like it, DON'T TRAVEL OUT OF THE COUNTRY!  In the meantime, TEXAS TEAM IS SEARCHING IN ARUBA WITH PERMISSION AND ARE VERY HAPPY WITH COOPERATION FROM ARUBAN GOVERNMENT!
Iranian, Cuban,England,Faster than lightening Americans sm
They're all self-explanatory. The English (from England) speak this way. "This young chap was involved in a fisticuff a fortnight ago full stop." You can't really change too much, but what it means is this young man was involved in a fight (or altercation) two weeks ago (period). Jeez! Full stop means period, it gets on your nerves after two pages of it! Type it like he dictates it and add the period after every "full stop." Period.
future of VR
My personal opinion is that for now only some companies will use it but eventually it will become more predominant like all technology, i.e., cassettes to mini-cassettes to C-phones, etc.; as well as manual typewriters to electric to memory typewriters to computers. It seems to be something people either love or hate, but I do believe it is here to stay, though not take over.

In the future you should try
doing a catchy flyer with pertinent info and faxing it. This works much better. Most of your mailers probably went in the trash without being opened. If you do a flyer, try using phrases like -will beat your current Transcriptionist rate- you WILL get calls. You can bargain from there.

I have a friend who works in a doctor's office and a drug rep gave them a list of phone numbers and fax numbers for all physicians in the area. If you can get one of these, just go down the list and fax 10 or 15 back to back at a time. I got several calls.
MT future
I have ben doing transcription for 7 years and ASR editing for about 6 months. From what I see, it will be a very, very long time before it is perfected. Honestly, transcription has not been lucrative for me in the past and although pay is slightly lower than transcribing, I have not seen much of a diffence to my bottom line.
MT future
sorry about typos, been a long day!
future
unfortunely, seems to work well for radiology...hospital probably a safer bet for future work.
there is editing needed, but personally would rather type thanlisten and correct. and many self edit anyway.
no future in MT
I agree. Itis the same old crap everywhere you go. Lousy pay, no raises, etc. I've worked for several agencies and it is only same old routine.
since i'm not sure about the future of MT

I've gone back to school as well.  I'm completely torn as to what I want to do, i'm back and forth, and the past two years have been taking courses for nutrition and psychology, and cannot decide between the two.  When I was a soph in HS I knew I wanted to do something with psychology,  but here it is 15 years later, when I've decided to go for it, and its just brutal, the studying, the work on top of a full time job.  I SOOO wish I would have just started 15 years ago, in that direction. I've always had a full time job and moved out at a young age, so just took the technical college route and learned MTing.

I'm looking at about 10 years of college because I can only go part-time, to be a clinical psychologist.  I'm thinking of just going for the nutrition.  I love working with food, time flies when i'm in the kitchen and I love watching people enjoy what i've made.  I just know its a stressful job, you're on your feet a lot, and its more about speed than anything.  I went to the library today and bought a book "can you stand the heat" all about the working conditions of a chef.  I know I do not have it in me to be in school the next 10 years, i'm sorry, maybe if I were independently wealthy and could just focus on that.  Becoming a chef will take less than three years.  I will do MT'ing as long as its around though, as I enjoy working independently.

Go to the library, there are books that fit your personality type with a specific job, and then a list of the pros and cons, the money you would make.  Just really research it.  If its what you want to do the rest of your life, make sure its something that will make you happy.

Future-Net
I do work for Future-Net and this is what they do.
I'm sure your future will be

Is there a future for me as a IC MT...
Hello!  I'm new here but any advice would be welcomed.  I haven't worked as a full-time MT in nine years.  Mostly I've done Pathology at a hospital in Las Cruces, NM.  I would like to get back into the MT field so I've purchased the SUM Advanced CD, which I am currently working on, and 19 practice dictation tapes from "Absolute Experience".  I have also just started a workbook entitled, "The Language of Medicine."  After I've finished all this, is there a future for me as an independent contractor MT?  This is really the only job that pays well that I can do from home.  Please let me know your thoughts.  Thanks in advance!  Shelley  P.S.  I took a test this week through a company called StatIQ in Albuquerque and I was surprised that I scored 94% (since it has been so long).  However, you must score 98% to secure a job.
Why not? Don't you think that even future - sm
programmers, code writers and technical engineers are warned that a lot of U.S. work is being sent to other countries?
