A sure-fire way to get everyone to quit is to totally disrupt things. Maybe they plan to outsource but don't want to tell anyone. If they can get everyone to quit on their own, no unemployment to pay. It certainly sounds very counter-productive, and undoubtedly will make those with families very unhappy. They should fire the person who came up with this hairbrained idea!

For your own client, that sounds pretty average.

Based on what I know some outsourcing companies charge, you are definitely in the ball park. Sounds to me the area might be underpaying, which in the long run, hurts all of us.


If they only pay an outsourcing company say .13 cpl, will that same company turn around and pay a transcriptionist .08 to .09 ?  Don't know.



It all sounds pretty okay, as long as you're not - sm
being paid by the line, but by the hour. (I assume you're currently paid per hour as an inhouse employee, right?) If you can still make your previous inhouse salary, rather than the paltry cents-per-line most at-homes make, you should be sitting pretty.

Double check and be sure the inhouse people have to maintain the same line count as you! There is no reason why at-homes should be 'penalized' with higher line counts than in-house people, especially if you're doing the same work, using the same equipment, etc.

If you're paid per-line, and it's not as much as you'd be making per-hour inhouse, what could happen is that you'll find yourself working longer hours for less money, which isn't fair. It's hard to maintain quality work when you're depressed about what you're making, or about never being able to leave the house!

Depending on your hospital's software, they may be able to clock you in and out. I worked at a place where they could see the time you started a report, and the time you sent it, but that wasn't always accurate if you were halfway through a report and then got up to use the restroom, and then had to wait in line for a stall, etc.

Even if you can't get worker's comp for getting hurt at home (though if you got something like carpal tunnel, you might be able to dispute that!), you would probably still be able to get Disability.

For the most part, it sounds like a deal that would work. You're better off being at at-home employee of an inhouse MT department than you are working for a large national. You probably already have better benefits, too.

And, at some point in the future, if you decide working at home isn't for you, you probably would have the option of going back inhouse without much change in anything, but if you left and worked elsewhere, it would not only be harder to come back if you wanted to, but they'd probably add insult to it all by offering you a lower 'starting' wage.

if you don't like it simply quit and start doing MT.
10 cents a line, 350 lph sounds pretty good to me!
I've got 30 years experience and I've not found to setup you have..Be very careful about changing. I've been looking for over a year and not found anything close to what you say you have. I've also worked for a company for over a year now and still get doctors whom I have never transcribed before.. almost on a nightly basis!
The line rate sounds pretty good compared to other places - by "punch the clock", you mean
it really is not a flexible schedule, even for an IC? That's what I need the most.
I quit once for 3 years, but then started again. (Quit cold turkey when I did)

I quit two months ago. I tried to quit for over a year, but I just had to be ready.
I tried the patch, NRT gum, Zyban, everything. One morning, I woke up and just quit cold turkey. There are some good online support groups out there that can help you when you're ready.

My complaints are about the losers who don't want to take care of their own problems. They are pathetic as the the poor poverty-stricken people from LA using their $2000 FEMA allowance to buy purses and crap they don't need. They can't make decent decisions -- that's why they are in the poverty state they are in. Neither can the MQ complainers. Can't make a decent decision.

Nowadays, no one in this business can possibly defend the way it is managed - except management itself. Certainly not us gerbils at the bottom, spinning the wheels.
IMO, she has a money mgmt problem!
I worked for a small MTSO (15-30 employees at any one time) for years and years and they were NEVER late on our paychecks.

I know from working in-office that collection was a huge, HUGE issue with some clients. I knew of several that the service had to repeatedly drop due to nonpayment. Some owed the company hundreds of dollars and were habitually late. Sometimes they would take them back if they paid up, sometimes they wouldn't (if they were chronic offenders and just not worth the hassle). One year I know for sure the owners did not collect their own salaries several times in order to make the payroll.

It sounds to me like this person is working too close to the bone, not building up enough in her own account to cover payroll. One should never have to wait on a client payment to pay an employee. That's just poor management, IMO.

By and large my clients are good honest people like the rest of us, but these few bad apples make it hard to trust the rest.

Have you talked to mgmt. about the lack of consistency?
Seems like mgmt would want to get all the QA on the same page, anyway b/c that is way too frustrating for the MTs to get conflicting requests all the time. Where I do QA we get mgmt emails all the time reiterating client requests and info to keep us all in the loop.
WebChart MD file mgmt svc - not MTSO
WebChart MD does not do transcription but manages your files, transfers files to you, etc.  Is a file management company.  You pay them so much per month for providing the FTP, and then the docs send their files to them, they send to you.  They charge per user, etc.  When I talked to them, very expensive for me and I could not pass that onto the doctors especially when I can do the services they provide
I think I'm pretty bright and pretty good, too, but
I am not a CMT. I am a medical transcriptionist who enjoys her job very much (most days). I have chosen not to pursue certification simply because I cannot afford to do so. I believe the certification is a nice thing to have, but I don't believe it is necessary for employment or for excellence in my job. If you can afford it, go for it. If you can't, don't feel too bad. You can still take pride in and do a very good job without it.

Ummm, since MGMT's reply was so quick to try and nip this post in the bud, I'm not
exactly feeling real confident about asking them at this point. I had the feeling if it was something MGMT had wanted us to know, we would've received notification from them at the time it occurred, such as was done when other changes in mgmt happened. I had also thought that was one of the purposes for having an anonymous board such as this--to get straight answers without fear of reprisal.
I'm the opposite.... the pay is okay, but I hate working inhouse. Mgmt. SUX! n/m

got an E-mail from Chase - the credit card company.  I do have a credit card with them that is paid in full and I'm fixing to cancel.  Anyway the e-mail was addressed to valued customer, which should have been the first clue.  It was offering to credit my account $20.00 for answering 6 questions about their supposed new and improved website.  At the end of the questions they wanted my ID, password, account #, etc.   Now you'd think they know this information if I had an account with them - LOL.   Of course I didn't fall for it, though I'm sure there will be many who will.

In biz anything that is paid is cost LOL what about the billing cycle revenue and legal protection transcriptionists provide. They fail to mention that everything is cost from the nursing salaries to the paper cups in the cafeteria.
What a joke and sad attempt to put the blame for their creepy ways on the big bad administrators and insurance companies.
Yeah lets support them so they can reduce wages even more with the black character line bs.
If they were devoted to MTs, apart from patient care & safety they would be advocating for us by emphasizing to hosptials admins and risk management and insurance companies about the legal protection that error free accurate reports provide. They would be emphasizing the value of what we are offer/our product instead of working against us.

I was stupid enough to take a job QA job...
making 3 cents per line. I thought it would be just filling in blanks so it would be okay and I was tired of typing. Well they wanted me to do 100% QA for 3 cpl! The MT's work that I was QAing were making 3cpl for VR editing. So basically, I'm making the same thing as them, expect I'm having to correct their work, provide them feedback, field emails from the MT's all day answering questions from the feedback that I gave and all for 3cpl. So basically, I was making less than the the MT's. I told my boss I needed a raise or I would just go back to being an MT b/c I could make more money doing that. She wouldn't give me one. Even after I told her that it took me 6 hours to get to 1000 lines in QA one day b/c of all the terrible MT's she hired and bad reports I was correcting. So what's that $30? I made way less than minimum wage! She didn't even respond to me.

I see job ad's here ALL the time from TTD saying they are paying 3cpl for QA. I emailed them to see if it was 100% QA and she said yes. Unbelievable.

It really makes me sick how MT's are so taken advantage of and so underpaid.

I would say on average, an MT would edit 300 lines an hour. That's decent. I would be offended if someone offered me 1 or 2 cpl for VR. Do the math. 3 cpl is too low IMO.
