Yeah, I'd have to let them start helping with the cooking to learn some appreciation (sm)

"Sounds mean but I came from a family of 7 that had only 1 income and we ate what was put on the table and if we complained too much then we had liver and spinach the next night. "

That's hilarious! Your parents were smart! I grew up the same way, except that spinach was one veggie we liked, and mom only made liver twice a year because she hated it herself.

not trying to start a flame but if you come to america, learn our language. sm
no pitty party here for those who can't learn the english language. if you expect to live and work in america, you should darn well know their language. i personally think that should be a requirement for citizenship. i couldn't expect to go to another country and expect everyone to adapt to understanding my english grammar. it is our taxpayer money paying thousands of workers for the government extra money if they can speak more than english, what a waste of my money.
Almost Gobbler Day. Who is cooking and who is going out to dinner? Myself cooking. (sm)

We usually have everyone bring a dish of some sorts.  Large family, probably about 30 plus.  Set up 3 extra tables in the garage for smokers and cardplayers and have a great day stuffing ourselves.

Looking for different side dishes, suggestions anyone?

Appreciation
I was wondering if the MTSO companies could offer a word or two of praise occasionally to those of us who are sitting here trying to make sense out of nonsense?   I sit here day after day and all I get back is criticism.  These companies do not have to wait until MT week to offer a pat on the back.  Come on guys......
New appreciation
I've done MT off and on for 20+ years.  Get burnt out, start again, etc.  Every time I quit for a while,  I come back with a better attitude and a new appreciation of this skill that we have that allows us to work part-time, full-time, seasonal, temporary, no boundary as far locations or age, and the option of bringing our work right along wherever we go (in most cases), and with increasing technical enhancements that make our work easier and less physical.  Can you imagine typing every word and phrase out on a manual typewriter and making carbon copies?  I don't care that no one appreciates my job, or knows what I do, or thanks me for doing this.  That is not why I work.  I work for money.  And as I get older, I also work to keep my mind sharp and to keep this skill sharp that has taken years to perfect.  That's just my opinion and I do understand that someone from a different age group is going to feel differently and that's just fine, but just wanted to share my outlook on things.
Appreciation
That is why I love the company that I work for currently. Almost everyday we receive emails on how they appreciate their employees and how much they are blessed to have such wonderful MTs. We even get emails from clients that the company forwards to us with compliments on how our skills and abilities. I love this company and wouldn't trade it for the world. I do wish that more companies were like this though.
$100 and letter of appreciation
Better than the candy apple and lay off notice that I got from a former employer for Christmas one year.
appreciation (or lack there of)
One thing I have learned is that not many people understand this working at home gig.  I will say though that after I have let my kids listen to a few of these dictations they are totally amazed and over the years I have helped them with the words to quite a few songs they couldn't understand.  One daughter is now a pharmacist and she is totally amazed at what I can understand.  My son-in-law, also a pharmacist, asked if he could let me listen to the voice mail from ESL's that call in prescriptions and he cannot understand.  My sister and brother-in-law are doctors, so they appreciate my talent and work ethic.  However, just today my second daughter got mad at me because I told her I could not watch her boyfriend's new puppy (not housebroken) and work at the same time.  I have been doing this at home for over 10 years now, so they have grown up with it, and still don't always get it.  I left a hospital job after a divorce because I was never around when the kids needed me and it was difficult to leave work for emergencies.  I made double the income - at first with no benefits.  I miss the retirement, but I wouldn't have been able to keep my house, so everything is a trade off.  Only we can understand each other
Honey, you must not be getting enough love or appreciation!
nm
getting paid is showing appreciation for my work. that's all i care about.
who cares if some supervisor "appreciates" me?  i'm in it for the money not for someone to "appreciate" me.
You read my post ABSOLUTELY correct. Supervisors don't need my appreciation nor
do I need their's.  We all just want to get paid if you are honest.  I don't have time to worry if I am appreciated by MQ.  I just want them to pay me for an honest day's work.  I guess that shows they like me, they really, really like me.  Talk is cheap.  I get it all the time from MQ CEO/management, how much I am appreciated.  I just want to paid for my time and don't want to hear all the talk.  I mean who really cares.  So if they appreciate me and don't pay me for my efforts, what do I do with this "appreciation"?  Bank it?
Situations change. We are all in this for the money. Loyalty is great but appreciation (monetarily
And be honest. This is a financial issue and a matter of there is only so much time in one day. They may be shook up for a bit but in the end, they will remember you for the work you produced and your day to day performance and personal character traits. Give them plenty of time to find someone new if you are very fond of them and, in this case, you could offer to train the new person.
Well, since he does most of the cooking..
Maybe let him make their dinner and you make yours! That's what I would do. I would not give up my meals for two spoiled rotten kids ;)
cooking in crock pot right now
Either beef stew meat OR a chuck, whatever.  One can cream of celery, one can cream of mushroom and one can french onion.  Don't have do do a thing.  Delicious
I'm cooking. Daughter and son-in-law,
son, husband and myself will be spending Thanksgiving together (after my son and I get off work).
Yes, and I'm the one cooking the turkey
Don't think my guests would appreciate a "tofu turkey". I will do the whole traditional meal and those who choose not to eat the turkey will still have plenty.
How do you get rid of cooking smells?

I've about had it with cooking any beef or pork at all.  Even cooking with hot oil.

I cannot get the lingering odors out.  I wash the pots and pans, put up the leftovers immediately, clean the stove and all surfaces but it just lingers.

Does anyone have a solution?

Ever try cooking a meal in someone else's kitchen? sm
You know how to cook, but have a tough time finding where everything is kept in that kitchen so it takes a while longer.  You could cook the same thing in your own familiar kitchen in half the time.  This goes for MT, too.  It takes a long time, even for those of us who have been transcribing half our lives, to get used to new formats, new work type codes, new voices, and learning idiosyncrasies for each and every dictator.  It takes time--a few months or more.  Be patient, and the line counts will surely add up as you become more familiar with the account.
son cooking steak and shrimp
what a treat.  Someone else cooking for a change.
Make my own. Cooking's a hobby.
I'd almost like to be a caterer or chef, but I don't like working evenings or weekends.  LOL

You should see some of my personal medical reports other people have transcribed. Jeesh, can I sue as a patient for such poorly transcribed reports? Thanks for the laugh...
Thank you very much for helping everyone! nm

helping ...
I'd really love to do this, but, with my health, I never know if its a 'good' day or not, generally not. My plans this year are painting, it'll be cool enough, and should be rather entertaining with 3 little dogs sticking their noses in the paint LOL
helping others
when I can reach through whatever pain is in my life and help someone else, my pain seems to lessen
Thanks for helping me to get a different (sm)
perspective on this. Both of your responses made me remember just how often the docs do say thanks, or have a nice day, or wish me a happy holiday if I happen to be working on one. Think I'll just try to remember to focus on the good ones and stop letting the ones with bad attitudes get to me.

Thanks again for letting me get that off my chest--hope you both have a great rest of the week! :)
Ya ain't helping yourself
Tru dat is slang expression appropriated from the urban/hip-hop culture that even here nestled in the far far reaches of the midwest I am aware of, rating right up there with foshizzle and the old favorites 'dissing', 'blood', and 'groovy'. If you believe that to be a mockery of Southeast Asian pronunciation, maybe Curious did hit the nail on the head.
Meat cooking is harder, IMHO
Remebering my childhood as an animal eater, I think it is harder cooking for meat eaters and way more expensive than vegetarian foods.
Take turns w/ menu (and cooking and cleaning..)
I grew up in a house w/ a six-pack of kids and if you didn't like what was for dinner, too #$$# bad, will give it to your brother lol.
What are you cooking for 4th of July? Recipes encouraged please!

Your school should be helping you
to find employment. All the best MT schools provide job placement assistance. At the very least, your school should be able to tell you what companies seek to hire their graduates. It should be something your school is proud and eager to share with you. If no one is willing to hire graduates of your school, you might have to bite the bullet and get some further training from one of the MT schools that turn out job-ready MTs. Companies are eager to hire from those schools because they know what they're getting. Good luck to you.
thanks for helping. I still don't know what to do though. I can't hear V5.

I do QA also and agree with that QA - she is helping you really. nm

Helping U.S. MTs is exactly my thought.
I don't really believe that there will never be a need for U.S. MTs, but I feel this may open up a new market for U.S. MTs, giving more expereinced MTs a new avenue for their skills (at least that would be my hope). I appreciate your comments, they really help!
thanks for helping to describe
what I cannot - and Jim is the guy that I talked to, also.  I wanted to jump through the phone and kiss him when I finally found one to replace my old one.  I am so glad someone knows what I am talking about.
Thank you all for this! I appreciate your time in helping me! (nm)

Don't be afraid of it. It's really hard to mess up Oriental cooking.

Here are the links to the recipes that I printed off of Google.  (I love the Internet!  No more cookbooks, only Google for recipes.)  I cheated on the plum sauce by buying a jar because our plums aren't quite ripe yet.  Buy the egg roll skins instead of trying to make your own, too.

http://www.cooksrecipes.com/sauce/homemade-plum-sauce.html

For the fried rice, you can use any type of rice.  I use brown basmati or jasmine rice mostly.  You can also throw in extra vegetables and leftover meats (pork, beef, chicken) to make a meal out of it instead of a side dish.  I like those Oriental pea pods, bok choy, water chestnuts, baby corn, and Chinese cabbage.

http://japanesefood.about.com/od/friedrice/r/friedrice.htm

I'm going to combine and modify the eggroll recipes so I have shrimp/pork egg rolls.  I use canola oil instead of vegetable, peanut, or sesame oil.  I don't care for sesame seeds or bamboo sprouts, so I add extra water chestnuts.  Use frozen or fresh instead of canned crab or shrimp.  Use diced, boneless pork chops instead of ground pork or sausage.

Usually I just have coffee. Sometimes I'll have oatmeal. Today, DH is cooking again!
We're having breakfast "hash" with scrambled eggs, ham, hash browns, cheese, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and red pepper in one skillet.  Whole wheat toast and chipotle Tabasco.
Oh, me too!!! When I got my first microwave (very expensive) we all watched the bacon cooking.

as he is in very close proximity to a lot of businesses and they are tiny places and may not be aware they are sharing and he gets it for free.  May have to take mine over and see what happens!

I am so grateful that there are such smart and kind people here to help.  Thank you so much.  When you walk into a store you never know what ulterior motives they have in telling you what you need!
