Students Against War win

FASCISM: In brief, any movement, ideology, or attitude that favors dictatorial government; centralized control of private enterprise; repression of all opposition; and extreme nationalism.

The way I see it, we meet this criteria three for four. The control of private enterprise is just a formality. Under the label of capitalism, government has more control than is realized. But, that subject is for a later day. Democracy is a flighty thing and can be morphed into something else entirely right before the eyes. Realistically, we are not that far from being inadvertently culminated into a fascist community. I came across this article today in Common Dreams. It is an article about Homeland Security presence on our campuses.

Yet another example of how fear can be used in a society after a disaster to justify taking of liberties, and to add to the juxtaposition, you have the venture capitalists coming in an making billions off it. It is wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to begin. It is not too far fetched to consider this as a form of profiling. Thankfully, it seems that the youngest voting generation has opposed. Not unlike so many of the older generations who for some strange reason think it is justified under the auspices of national security. Due to opposition, most of it has stopped, for now. It does give hope that the youth are paying attention and that our future freedom and way of life rests in their hands.

Swastika vigilantes kill foreign students to keep their city 'clean'

src=http://images.thetimes.co.uk/images/trans.gif

THE African students did not even see the man raise the swastika-emblazoned shotgun as they emerged from the Apollo nightclub in St Petersburg.

When he opened fire from the shadows behind them, some of the group thought it was a firecracker going off.

Then they saw Samba Lampsar Sall, a 28-year-old student from Senegal, lying dead on the pavement with his throat blown apart.

Within hours, a sinister message had appeared on the website of a group called the Party of Freedom. “The clean-up of the city continues,” it said.

Mr Sall had come to study at St Petersburg’s State Communications University in 2001 in the hope of finding a better life when he went back home.

Instead, around dawn yesterday, he became the latest victim of a hate campaign by neo-Nazi extremists on the streets of Russia’s cultural capital.

“How can people be so evil?” asked Michael Tanobian, an African student who was with Mr Sall when he was killed. “We come here just to study, for nothing else. We don’t take anything here.”

Mr Sall’s brutal murder exposes one of Russia’s most disturbing problems as President Putin prepares to host the G8 summit in St Petersburg in mid-July. For all its grandeur and impressive art collections, Russia’s second city is fast becoming the racist capital of the world.

Critics say that the authorities are not doing enough to combat the extremists who routinely attack, and kill, Africans, Asians and immigrants from the Caucasus or Central Asia.

Seven people have been killed, and 79 injured, in more than 40 racist attacks this year, according to Sova, a non-governmental organisation that monitors extremism in Russia.

Last year, 28 people were killed and 366 injured in racially motivated crimes, it says.

The Interior Ministry sent a team of special investigators from Moscow to work on yesterday’s murder. The Foreign Ministry expressed “sincere condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased”. The Prosecutor’s Office said that the case was being treated as a racist killing.

But dozens of similar cases have been treated as “hooliganism”, a crime that carries a far lighter sentence. One of the most shocking attacks occurred in 2004, when teenagers stabbed to death a nine-year-old Tajik girl in St Petersburg. Last month, a court convicted them of hooliganism, giving six of them 18-year jail sentences and one of them five years.

Desire Defaut, chairman of the local community group African Unity, urged Mr Putin to lead the fight against neo- Nazism. “They must make an announcement at a state level that such a problem exists and state organs must work on it,” he said. “We can’t say they are doing enough if there are two attacks within one week.”

Last week, the nine-year-old daughter of a Russian woman and her African husband was wounded in a knife attack in St Petersburg. “What more proof of extremism do they need in St Petersburg?” asked Juldas Okie Etoumbi, chairman of the Association of the African Students of Moscow. But, he added, the problem is not confined to St Petersburg. In the past week, skinheads in Moscow beat up a journalist of Caucasian origin and the culture minister from the Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria.

Mr Putin has called racism “an infection” and pledged to stamp it out. But critics say that the Kremlin has tolerated, and even encouraged, ultra-nationalist groups to foster loyalty to the State and make itself look relatively liberal.

that's what this postponement was aimed for,
no Palin / Biden debate.  A complete meltdown of the GOP in 2008.
You only complain about 'bad language' if it's aimed at

This lame scare tactic is aimed at
twisting both the free choice of English language usage and the Bible verse/word of Jesus (who you claim is your Savior) to support the claims of a snarky cult. Back in the Puritan times, that was considered blasphemy and the ONES who chose to do this could be burned at the stake.

You make me ashamed to be associated with the Christian faith.

Glenn Beck:Obama's budget a loaded weapon aimed at you.
By Glenn Beck
Host, “Glenn Beck“

Hello America,

If you had any doubt that we were on “The Road to Socialism,” President Obama’s just released budget should clear up that confusion. In fact, we’re so on The Road to Socialism that Barack Obama’s budget reads like he went to MapQuest and printed out turn-by-turn directions to get us to socialism as quickly as possible. So far, President Obama is really making a big scary mess of things and this budget is a giant step in the wrong direction.

Believe me–I understand that I’m not the only one who feels this way. But there have been lots of times in my career when I felt like I was all alone in my thinking (and that’s exactly why I’m having my “We Surround Them” event on March 13th…so you know that you’re not alone –click here for more details). So it’s always comforting for me when I hear others saying the same thing. Just this past weekend on “FOX News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace asked Arizona’s Republican Senator Jon Kyl, “How big a change in direction does the Obama budget represent in the relationship between government and the American people?” Without missing a beat, Senator Kyl quoted The Wall Street Journal by saying, “The budget represents a historical shift in the ideological direction of U.S. economic policy.” No mincing words there. Then he reminded everyone that The Wall Street Journal also stated in an editorial that President Obama is attempting to expand the role of government to such a dominant position that its power can never be rolled back. A respected United States Senator and The Wall Street Journal–oh, I like that company. (Too bad we’re all agreeing on how bad things are getting.)

Here are some of the budget’s broad strokes:

* Obama’s budget takes the size of our government to the largest it’s been since World War II.
* It’s got a $1.4 trillion tax increase in it (and oh yeah–we’re in the middle of a recession).
* It doubles the debt in eight years.
* It never balances the budget and proposes that, for the next 10 years, our deficits are at a record high.

Hmmm. Usually I like to frame things in a “good news / bad news” context. That just won’t work here, but I don’t want to be a big downer. So let me put on a happy face and say that all the above was merely the regular, garden-variety bad news! Now here comes the super awful really bad news:

* Like a loaded weapon, this budget is aimed directly at you.

Is there a quicker way to end a honeymoon period for a new president than to propose a bunch of new taxes? It’s going to take a lot of serenading from Beyonce to make people forget about having less money…especially in this economy. See, not only is there a proposed huge tax increase for the energy and manufacturing sectors (and those get passed on to everyone), but overall tax rates are going up. All this is a real gut shot for small business. What too many people fail to remember is that small business is big business in America–over 70% of all American business is done by a small business. That means it’s likely that you either own or work for one, so President Obama wants more of your money (and I’m guessing it’s not like you have a whole lot extra lying around these days.)

And then there’s Obama’s suggestion of a “long-term investment in the economy.” That’s a fancy way of saying “increased spending.” (You don’t exactly need a decoder ring to figure that one out.) Another $30 billion for AIG…after they paid out six and seven figure bonuses and recorded the highest quarterly loss ever–over $60 billion–in U.S. history? How deep can our pockets be expected to be? Remember–every dollar the government “invests” in failing businesses is one of your dollars. If you had a stock broker who made the kind of crappy investments Washington has been making (and wants to make more of), you’d have fired them long ago.

This really isn’t that new a story–Democrats have a reputation of taxing and spending because, well…they always tax and spend. President Obama tries to soften his budget’s blow by stating that the tax increases don’t kick in until 2011. Um, Mr. President? It’s not exactly like 2011 is off in the sci-fi future where we’ll all have flying cars and live the life of George Jetson. Just like you need to plan ahead for re-election, small business owners need to do the same thing–plan for their future. So congratulations–now they’re doing that by bracing themselves for the tax avalanche coming their way in just a little over a year and a half from now. So instead of fueling the economy now–when we need it–business will tighten its belt and lower today’s bottom line in preparation for tomorrow’s new taxes. That lowers tax receipts! Instead of getting better, things get worse. Even I get that, and I’m the alcoholic rodeo clown.

Is it Election Day, 2012 yet?

At any time of day or night, you can see a McCain add followed by an Obama add or vice versa. November 4th cannot come soon enough!!!
When I was in college
I was very liberal - led rallies for Dukakis, made phone calls, passed out bumper stickers, etc. My dad, who is very conservative, called me out on my liberal views one day with this story.

"A girl with very liberal political views came home from college to visit her parents, who were very conservative. She started to discuss politics with her father, even though they always disagreed. Her dad, deciding to change the subject, asked her how she was doing in school. She replied that she was doing great and carrying a 4.0 gpa, but she didn't have much time to socialize because she was studying so much. The dad then asked how her friend from high school was doing. The daughter replied that her friend wasn't doing very well - she went to parties all the time, never studied and hardly ever went to class. She was carrying a 3.5 gpa. The dad said that maybe she could go to the Dean of the college and ask him to give her friend 0.5 points of her gpa - that way, they would both have a 3.5 gpa and they would be equal. The daughter was very upset by this suggestion, as she had worked very hard and given up a lot in order to have such good grades and that it would not be fair for her to give her friend her points when she had done nothing to earn them. Her father just smiled and said "Welcome to the Republican party."

Electoral College........
If you really knew what you were talking about, you wouldn't even have kicked your point down by saying anything about the electoral collge. The electoral college really is illegal and unconstitutional and there is no place for it in this country. It is mainly far left liberals who only look at for themselvs and could care less about the country as a whole. What a joke!!
Do you live in Ohio?
x
And if you did live in Ohio - sm
You might be able to vote three or four times. :)
the electoral college
I don't really know what people would want but I do know that the final decision on presidency rests with the electoral college, which vote will not take place until december 15th. The whole issue is designed to influence the votes of the electors so all remains to be seen after the SC today and the electoral vote on 12/15.
Ballot in Ohio.....sm
This should really raise some concerns. I wonder if there are any Ohio posters on this forum????

Getting rid of the electorial college....sm
or at least rewriting it is one of Obama's plans for his presidency. Perhaps his brilliant idea to beef up the registered voters in electorial-rich states will be his research market study to sell the idea to Congress and to the American people.

I don't think the electorial college is the ideal method of determining presidency as it stands now, but I am not sure what the answer needs to be. Popular vote would probably net the same results, a few more densly populous states determining the outcome of the presidency, but it does seem more representative of what the people want than some calculated system such as the electorial college.
Electoral college.... sm
What do you think will happen on December 15 when the electoral college convenes?

Do you think that Obama has succeeded in changing the color of the electoral college permanently or at least for this election?  Do you think the electors will stand by their votes or do you think some who changed over might revert back?

electoral college?
Honestly, this 'electoral college' always confuses me and I believe I am not alone in this.
Could you be so kind and explain?
Always open to learn something.
Thanks
Unless you live in Ohio and had to put up
with the crap that Taft was throwing out and saw first hand what Kenneth Blackwell did against his own party to try to make things right, you really can't make any kind of judgment calls. He's a good man, one of the very few left in politics these days, and I wish there were more like him. And yes, I do live in Ohio.
I'm really surprised in Ohio...
I figured Brown would vote yes, but am surprised Voinovich voted no - he's very much a RINO. I guess he figures he's got nothing to lose now that he's decided not to run for reelection.
Come on Ohio!!! Where's the money!!

Gov. Strickland’s Plan for Ohio a Blueprint for America’s Energy Future?

With oil hovering at $40 a barrel, and the price of gasoline nose-diving from all-time highs, do you think the worst-case scenario is behind us?
We are fooling ourselves if we think we can survive under our present system. Those are short-term numbers, and they are not encouraging to any of us. OPEC has already made it clear through production cuts that it is going to do everything in its power to get the price of a barrel of oil back up again.

So you’re saying we can’t afford to sit still?
Ohio can’t. Manufacturing is a vital component of our state’s economy. As a consequence our state uses an enormous amount of energy. Like America and its dependence on foreign oil, we are a net energy importer, which is why we are moving as quickly as possible to develop alternative energies. We have to.

What sort of steps is Ohio taking?

Last year the Ohio Legislature passed an electricity restructuring bill that has some of the strictest requirements in the country for developing electrical power from alternative energy sources. That’s the sort of signal investors want and need so they can commit capital and invest in alternative energies.

What other energy sources are being developed in Ohio?
I am personally a big supporter of nuclear power. Ohio was in the running and a finalist for a new nuclear plant being developed by Areva, the French nuclear power giant. We didn’t get that one, but there will be others to come. We have already taken big steps forward with clean coal technology. That’s a must for us because Ohio generates 95 percent of its electrical power from coal. I’ve also participated in several meetings with MTorres, a Spanish company, in Ohio as well as in Spain, about developing a wind farm on Lake Erie. What a great opportunity for us to make the most of such a significant natural and renewable resource. And our state is a leader in solar energy.

Ohio? Solar energy? That’s produced in the desert, not in the Midwest.
But how is harnessed? Come to Ohio and we’ll show you how. The Toledo area is one of world’s leading centers for solar research and development. To begin with I’ll tell you about First Solar, which is a publicly traded company that is one of the fastest growing manufacturers of solar modules in the world. The company is less than 10 years old and is already a leader in clean affordable energy.

Xunlight is another Toledo-area company that is a major solar panel producer. The company is a spin-off from the University of Toledo and was started by a young doctor, Xunming Deng. Xunlight manufactures microthin, three-foot wide solar panels that can be produced in sheets up to a mile long. They are completely portable and can be rolled up, transported, and easily installed.

And when investors tried to lure Dr. Deng overseas to set up production for Xunlight in a lower cost market, he said, “No. The University of Toledo took a chance on me, and now I’m going to stick by them.

From employment opportunities to increased funding in higher education and a broader tax base, that’s going to pay huge dividends.
I am convinced that renewable energies and developing the technology that powers them have the potential to be a major answer to the current economic challenges our country now faces. Anyone who needs proof can come to Ohio.

college educated voter in the

Then maybe that college educated voter......... sm
might like to test that theory by working a season or two in the redneck farmer's fields.

I live in an area where there are a lot of immigrant workers. The truth of the matter is that farmers really cannot afford to pay a wage high enough to be able to afford even a modest apartment, let alone buy food and pay utilities. I live right down the road from a poultry farm which employs a family of Mexican immigrants. The farmer, while making a fairly decent living (at least until Pilgrim's filed bankruptcy) provides a mobile home for the family to live in, pays utilities on said home and also pays the family wages to work on his poultry farm. No doubt this family recieves Medicaid and food stamps as well and the children probably get free lunches at school. It is very hard, if not impossible, to get Americans to work these kinds of jobs. I'm not condoning illegal immigrants, but if legal immigrants will do the job, then why not hire them?

Ohio is already starting to vote
Just heard on the news that in Ohio they have already starting holding the election and people can vote for president.  I don't know who this benefits and don't care at this point, but I thought election day was 11/4.  Can someone explain why people are allowed to vote ahead of time.
I agree with doing away with the electoral college....
it would certainly level the playing field and not give the bulk of the votes to the population centers. One only has to look at red states vs blue states to figure that one out.

about that free college education
I posted this below but I think it will not get noticed 'cuz it is so far down and I am really wondering about it. My daughter, who graduated law school, has over 100K in student loans for her education. She is working hard to pay that back. What happens to those? She is killing herself to pay back while the next guy gets for free? I don't think so. Will Obama also forgive those loans? If not, I would expect greater default than we now see. And I would certainly expect to see a lot of professionals, the people with those big loans, protesting this deal big time. Just wondering if anyone else has any input there. I know people spent up to 20 years paying off those loans, and I would certainly resent spending 20 years paying off something that everyone is getting for free. That 100K applied to their mortgage would certainly be nice!! Might even allow her to work less hours and be home with the family more.
Exactly. And the fact that the governor of Ohio...
ordered a background check on him is a violation of his civil rights and he should sue him. That is absolutely ridiculous.

Doesn't say anything about being taxable or not and definitely does not specifically forbid soda.

What can be bought with food stamp benefits?

Food stamp benefits can be used to buy most food or food products intended for human consumption. Items which

may not be purchased with food stamps include alcoholic beverages, tobacco, hot food and hot food products

that are prepared to be eaten immediately. Individuals who receive food stamp benefits may not sell or trade food

stamp benefits, buy nonfood items or use food stamp benefits to buy food for someone who is not a member of

the household.

Ohio War Veteran Running for Senate

By DAN SEWELL
The Associated Press
Monday, October 24, 2005; 2:54 PM

CINCINNATI -- Paul Hackett, the Democratic veteran of the Iraq war who narrowly lost a special election in a heavily Republican congressional district in August, made his official entry into a U.S. Senate race Monday.

He faces a tough Democratic primary with Rep. Sherrod Brown in the race for the nomination to challenge second-term Republican incumbent Sen. Mike DeWine next year.

(AP Photo/Al Behrman) (Al Behrman - AP)

Hackett's only political experience is a stint as a small-city councilman.

I'm asking all the people of this great state, regardless of political affiliation, to consider my message and to consider joining me in the fight to take back our government from the career politicians and their special interest support groups who have hijacked our government, he said as he announced his campaign at his home in suburban Indian Hill.

Hackett decided to run for Congress earlier this year after completing a seven-month tour of duty in Iraq as a Marine reservist. That special election in southern Ohio's seven-county 2nd District was to replace Rep. Rob Portman, who left his seat to become the U.S. trade representative.

Hackett won the Democratic nomination, then battled Republican Jean Schmidt, a former state legislator, in a campaign in which he linked her to embattled Republican Gov. Bob Taft while sharply criticizing President Bush's handling of the war.

Schmidt won on Aug. 2 with 52 percent of the vote, though Portman had consistently won re-election in the district with more than 70 percent and Bush had carried it in 2004 with 64 percent.

Hackett's strong showing in a state that was a pivotal presidential battleground solidified the attorney as a likely 2006 candidate for Congress or statewide office.

After Hackett decided to oppose DeWine, Hackett was irked when Brown, with three decades of elective politics behind him, decided he also would run.

Brown, a former state legislator and Ohio secretary of state, is in his seventh congressional term, representing northeastern Ohio's 13th District. He's expected to officially launch his Senate race in early November.

Brown said Monday he initially didn't plan to run because of family reasons, but changed his mind with his family's encouragement. He said he wasn't expecting the race for the May 2 primary to damage his chances of defeating DeWine in the general election.

I've had primaries before, Brown said. It makes me a stronger candidate.

Electoral college - Do we need it for a fair election? sm
Some states are talking about getting rid of the electoral college. Critics think this will lead to candidates pandering to urban areas to get the most votes.

Off the top, it sounds like a good idea to me because I'm in Alabama and if I could vote 100 times the republican party still would win our punny 3 electoral votes because we are overall a conservative state. Given that it seems like my vote doesn't count. However, I realize the electoral college was set up to avoid regional preferences.
