I don't think....(sm)

he'll exactly be having bar-BQs with them.  I think his intention is to open a dialogue with countries that we normally would not communicate with, for example, Iran.  The point of this is not to change their country, but to find common ground.  As far as the middle east is concerned, the big pink elephant in the room has always been Israel, and that has to be dealt with one way or the other.

I'm not saying that all countries are going to be amendable to this, and quite frankly, yes, he will need to watch his back with some.  I don't think Obama has said that this will definitely work, but he obviously thinks its worth a try, as do I.  Honestly, we haven't tried that diplomacy first thing in at least 8 years, and I think its about time we went back to it.  This does not mean that the US should lay down and just take whatever is handed out.  It simply means that all alternatives should be exhausted BEFORE the use of force.

As far as setting an example, no, not all countries will become a democracy.  In fact, my guess is that as soon as we get out of Iraq and Afganistan they will return to their former states.  So, for those countries who are not a democracy, what would be the point of setting an example?  They don't have to copy our government, but they may learn a few things from it, and if we can get a government that is run without corruption, they may even come to respect it.  We can't go around and preach, for example, that torture is wrong and then turn around and do it ourselves and then be beyond reprieve.  With the use of torture we have not only committed what our country should see as a crime, but also how many treaties with other nations?

Interesting fact:  Did you know that Germany has taken the case of Rumsfeld to the world court over torture?  Other countries take this stuff seriously.  I think if we plan to have any capital as a super power in this world we should too.
