First let me say God bless firefighters. Truly amazing human beings.
Those 5 in your company - the difference is your company COULD get rid of them without worrying the union legal hassles. In a union shop, it would be a much bigger problem to try to get rid of them, and I think you know that. You were the one who mentioned the legal issues of firing a union employee. I suspect, however, that there are some flaws in your comparison here as the calling for and responsibilities of a firefighter are obviously worlds apart from those of an MT.
I want to add my dad was one of the people who lost his job to a union strike, not one he was in favor of but stuck with because it was a completely union shop. he had no choice in the matter. You worked there, you were a union member, period. Even though a good number of employees were against the strike, they were still in the minority and strike was voted (at union urging). After months of trying to live on strike pay, not wonderful at all, after having cars smashed and people beaten and injured on picket lines, the union made no concession, the company closed and moved to Mexico and all those fine people were left high and dry. The union could not have cared less. they were a machinists union with a huge membership. Losing a company here and there was collateral damage to them, but ask the men and women who were without work how they felt about collateral damage and how they felt about the union AFTER that.
