you know what gets me?

What gets me is how everybody keeps talking about the poor don't deserve to be helped because they are there because they want to be...

Well, let me tell you a story.  I have a 23-year-old daughter who finds herself divorced and alone through no fault of her own.  Her exhusband is in the military.  He talked her into quitting college and a good job and marrying him, moving away from home, and then proceeded to find someone he liked better at the military base, and sent her packing.  She now works her 40-hour week for her measly $10 an hour.  She is ordered child support, but the Navy thinks that the judge gave her too much money and therefore they only debit from her ex's check the amount they considered fair.  In the meantime, he is still drawing a check from the military based on being married and having dependent children.  Of course, he does not help contribute in any way whatsover other than what the Navy deemed fair to take from him.

Her childcare alone for the kids takes up more than what the Navy sends her.  That leaves nothing to help pay for all the extras.  She is not a deadbeat mom walking the streets and leaving her children at home for someone else to raise - she is with her children every night and every weekend day.  Her $10 an hour job is not enough to cover the rent, the power, gas, water, car payment, car insurance, FOOD, CLOTHING...

Because of her court-ordered child support, she is not eligible for any kind of aid now because her income is too high (but keep in mind, she does not get it all).  It puts her out of range of getting any kind of help with childcare, food stamps, medicaid - NOTHING...

And I know that she is not alone in this - there are millions of people out there who by no fault of their own need some help and should be getting it.  Being poor does not equate with being lazy or bad or uncaring about your kids, or wanting to do nothing but walk the streets - it may equate with having some down on your luck times through no fault of your own, it may equate with not being able to afford a secondary education which is much needed to get yourself out of being poor.  Hard work does not necessarily mean good money in this day and time.

I hope none of you who are so down on helping the "poor" ever find yourself in this situation.

And God help our children and their children if these attitudes continue
