I see where you are coming from because I would be nagged by guilt and feeling responsible

for the problem.  I have those tendencies too.  No way should you cash your IRA for a car.

The feeling up was when she was a child. The coming on was when she was an adult.

please don't take on any guilt that someone--sm
else is trying to lay on you. You have enough to worry about without feeling guilty about a human reaction. First off, it was not your husband's fault for not taking the quad off the trailer. It was all your BIL responsibility once he took the vehicles to his property, to make sure they were safe. period. If they are reacting out of anger towards you now, it is because they feel the guilt of responsibility and it may end up costing them something in the future. They do not want to have to pay the consequences for their mistake...so...they are trying to turn it around on you and make you feel guilty for blaming them for your loss. they can only do that if you allow them to. You are in the right. You are also within your rights to attempt to recover for you loss, whether it is family or not. Secondly, the disagreement you got into with your sister is on her shoulders. Heated emails or not, she came to your house, became confrontational with you, and ended up placing her hands on you in anger. Whether she hurt you or not, she aggressively assaulted you. If you let it go this time, just like in any abuse case, be it male or female, it just gives her an open door to do it again, maybe not to you, but to someone else. She feels she can get what she wants by physical means, and that is wrong. You say she and her husband have always been this way, by screwing people over, so they can get what they want, no matter what the consequences. They have apparently never been made to pay the consequences of their actions. They have never learned not to be selfish. Family or not, sister or not, you have the right and obligation to defend yourself, your person and your property, against a selfish onslaught. As I said previously, your sister and BIL would be knocking on your door wanting compensation for their property if it had been stolen from you. Situations are always different when the shoe is on the other foot. Thirdly, even though you love your nephew dearly, she is the parent. It is her responsibility to act in such a way *maturely* so that her *business* is not in jeopardy and she will not lose her job or her home because of it. It is her actions that caused any consequences that come from this. Not yours. She seems to be very good at turning anything she does wrong onto someone else, making it their fault. Do not let her guilt you into thinking you did this, because you did not.

As you said. The damage is done. You cannot undo it. You cannot change it. You did the right thing in protecting yourself from her physical assault. Whatever happens now is a result of her actions, not yours. If per chance this ever calms down, and it will in time, perhaps an amicable solution would be for them to pay HALF of the loss. That way both parties take responsibility. That is just a suggestion. But please, please, do not take on the guilt she is trying to get you to take. Stay strong. Family or not, she had no right to inflict anything on you physically. Just remember that. Abuse is abuse whether you are hurt or not. Trust me on that. I have been there. I wish you all the best!
You ever think it may be guilt that has - sm
kept him from contacting her? People tend to sweep under the rug what they feel bad about, so maybe he swept his former life and child under the rug and cannot go back because he feels guilty of how he treated them. It does happen. Granted there are those who feel nothing and want nothing to do with their past "indiscretions", and are just horrible people to begin with. If it were me I'd get in touch, but with no expectations of becoming one happy family; basically for curiousity. My mom was adopted and on and off I have searched for her birth parents. She is dead now, and unless they are very, very old, her parents are dead too, but I may have some aunts and uncles I know nothing about as well as some cousins that I am still curious about and hope to one day meet. It took me a while but I got her birth certificate released via the courts when my mom was still alive and at least she died knowing her birthday really was her birthday (we had our doubts as her "parents" lied about so much) and the names of her parents, assuming they told the truth on the birth certificate, one never knows. Yes, her contacting her dad will ruffle some feathers but she has a right to contact him and should not let others stop her if she really wants to contact him just because they don't like the idea.
Guilt
Guilt is a major side effect of depression. Believe me, I know! I didn’t realize the extent of my depression until after I started treatment for it. Now that I am on the “other” side of the coin, I am much more aware of the symptoms and triggers. I, too, wondered why everything made me feel guilty, especially when no one really even tried to make me feel that way; I brought it on myself. For years, I kept asking myself why I was feeling that way and never came to a solid conclusion. Now that I am on medication, there was no real reason for my guilt other than I was depressed. I can honestly say that any guilt I feel right now is a normal healthy level, enough to help me remain considerate to others, but it is no longer a major part of my life. I feel like a slave who has been set free from bondage. I’ve learned that it’s okay to pamper myself and take care of some my own needs. However, I don’t think I could have ever done it on my own without the help of medication.
I would never put you on guilt trip for that
That little beast is a nervy ho!!!! The worst part of having kids is dealing with other kids and their parents. How DARE she do that? Use your computer? But I will say, this will be an ongoing war for eternity now with the mother.
first, quit the guilt
If you have been burned by someone repeatedly, and they still want you around, they have to be open to your verification to gain your trust. He doesn't respect you enough to get help and stick with it, as he has proven repeatedly, so why should he be surprised if you want reassurance of his activities. If he doesn't want to change, then there is nothing you can do to make him. You have to decide if it is really worth hanging on. Is life apart from him really that much worse than with him? I would advise you to see if there is anyone you can talk to who is an expert on addiction and those who live with addicts (you didn't say whether you have a counselor available or maybe a support group). FWIW, I've been there, and I would never give a man as many chances as you have. It is your life. Reclaim it for yourself!

My point is that the e-mail check is not what you should worry about. How his problems affect your life/sanity/sense of self is what you should focus on.

Good luck!
Regardless, that doesn't take away his guilt sm
She didn't believe it then, but she does now. Better late than never. He is still guilty and people who are willing to do those types of things don't change. My point to Mrs. R is that we are not villifying men in general, this woman's husband is guilty of doing something very bad.
you're into guilt by association? s/m

As I know it, they broke up months ago..........so I have read...and anyway - you sound like my 87 year old mother!!!

Guilt? I am much too old to think about such a superficial thing
I just wondered who makes you the guru of all things good or bad? I just happen to know that things mentioned here, not all, but some are absolutely good for you. My husband is a chef and I am a registered dietician. You need to go back on the other board where you always seem to stir things up.
Keep waking up at night - Guilt? Anxiety?
Okay - for months now I have been aking up in the middle of the night with my heart racing and feeling hot.  I have to sleep with a fan and keep fipping from one end of hte bed to ther other so the sheets will be cool.  I guess that could just be that I'm hot, I don't know.  Then I end up being awake for an hour or two while my mind wanders through everything that I am not happy with myself about and I end up making resolutions about how I am going to improve because I'm so bad, etc.  I keep wondering if the heart racing is just physical and is maybe anxiety and I am trying to rationalize it as guilt so I start to try to think of what I might feel guilty about?  Anyway, the next day I am fine, although I have started spending less money as a result of one of my late night attacks!  Does anyone else do this or know what it is? I'm tired of it - and tired the next day!
either postpartum depression or embarrassed/guilt

I have known people to withdraw due to feeling like people are going to make fun of their child, blaming themselves or postpartum depression.  Is this their first child?  Could be that she is just simply overwhelmed. What does her mother-in-law/mother think?  Is she also pulling away from them?

Just let her know that you are there for her even if that means sending her a card.

Confessional is for the purpose of relieving people's guilt of sin.
The law is written on mankind's heart. Confessional and or talking with your pastor is a helpful tool toward relieving guilt and for guidance. People who quote scripture like this should know it is fine to quote but also should be educated on the original purpose of confessional. No one ever said the Pastor is taking the place of Christ. Read up on Luther's papers, please.
Yes, guilt is my downfall. Now, I feel guilty because she has no life survival skills because I have
done everything for her...so now I blame myself about how she will survive because she has no idea what to do. I guess I didn't have anyone leading my way. I've been on my own since I was 16 years old and I made it okay.  She calls me for EVERYTHING..how do I do this.. how do I do that and I know now it's time just to let her fall because she'll never learn how to pick herself up if I keep doing it. That's the hardest teacher..falling on your face. She even said that she feels different because she doesn't know anything other kids her age know how to do.. That right there should have made me STOP.. I have not done her any favors..When I thought I was helping her, I was just making it worse and enabling. I'm done with it. Thanks for listening.
Yes, but if only 1 kid responsible, do you really think
the whole school would be given notice of being punished? Think about it. I am sure and anyone who does this type of work knows there are products out there to help a gaseous distention. My goodness. My DIA parapro here in Georgia and she tells me when her classroom children do things like this and she tells them to say excuse me - they tell her their parents don't mind. You all need to research this a little and I am sure you would be surprised as to whether medically related or attention getting actions.
You are not responsible for others
especially in an age group like this, just as you are not responsible for your parents. When you are grown, responsible for your own actions. Saying this did not have to happen- your life is written before you are born and no matter, that is already decided. This is the way it was supposed to be or never would have happened. I am not saying this is horrible situation but just the way these lives were supposed to start and if not this way, another way but I believe things are going to happen like your whole life is already planned out. Make plans but does not matter.
There are a lot of responsible and
a lot of irresponsible 15 year olds out there. In our state you can't get a license until you are at least16 and 3 months and then after driver's ed and behind the wheel. At 15 my son was definitely responsible enough. My daughter will be 15 in January and I don't know if I would say the same about her. You are the parent and you know your child and what they can and can't handle.
You are not responsible if he won't help himself (sm)
Tell him you think he needs to go to be observed a little while at the mental ward at the hospital. If he will not work and will not go get welfare, that is his problem, not yours. He should not expect you to take care of him if he won't even apply for welfare - anyone can fill out the paperwork for that, good grief. I think I would have to tell him off really well...or seriously tell him that since he won't do anything at all to take care of himself, he needs to go to a nursing home or mental hospital. Tell him you will have him committed.
be responsible and fix your cat.
nm
No matter how responsible you are
and how much time you spend with them, you cannot be there 24-7 to supervise them. That is completely unrealistic. Can we take them to the doctor, to the store, to the kids' school? Come on now.

There is a responsible way to crate an animal. No matter how much you train them, my labs still would have eaten anything in site for a certain period of time. There is no way I would leave them unattended to run my errands and chance them getting into something that could harm them. Regardless of the material objects as you call them, they could get hurt.

Also, a child does need a crib and a playpen. To say that those are used so that you do not have to supervise your kids is ridiculous. Everyone has to go to the restroom at some point. Should we carry them everywhere or perhaps let them run around so they can get into something that would harm them until we finish our business? Wow....

I believe a pediatrician would even tell you that those are necessary in raising a healthy child, and I am not talking about someone who puts their kids in a playpen all day instead of spending time with them either.
No, he is an adult and responsible for himself.
nm
Too bad some responsible adult...
could not get those kids. We have a celebutard, immature, crazy mother against a wanna be anything hanger on who is only interested in money...some role models! I hope there is money put away for the therapy those kids will need. The parents even give white trash a bad name!
sounds like you have a very responsible son!
that's awesome. He hasn't pushed the issue so I may just wait until he asks again. i also need to check the policy at school regarding boys wearing earrings.
no, it is not all a matter of responsible
ownership. There have been very loving responsible owners themselves attacked by their own dogs. A popular dog breed can be overbred indiscriminately and ruined. Unfortuntately this breed is too unpredictable. I've always been around animals, large and small and have both now. I would never have a pit bull. I visit my friend less often now who now has one, and won't get out of the car if it is loose. Not to mention that these dogs don't just bite, which would be bad enough, they instinctively go for the kill. I haven't read the link you provided yet, but do NOT believe that breed-specific legislation is stupid. This particular bill may be over the top, but breed-specific laws are brought on by a need, and wouldn't get off the ground without plenty of facts on record to support it.
A responsible owner would never allow...sm
Their pitbull to wander around public. That is why we have attacks. Owners should be responsible and keep them as well as any dog in a fenced in yard. Or if out in public on a leash. Mine will never be wandering around in public on its own. That is totally irresponsible. If I saw a pitbull out in public I would be cautious myself.
Dear Responsible
I think responsible and owner of pitbull somehow just does not go together.
The owners who are not responsible are ...sm
the problem. I would be mad too if I went out and was approached by a pit bull who growled at me, and I own a pitbull. He should be kept in his owners yard or home. No dog, pit or otherwise, should be allowed to roam around the neighborhood.
I fully understand you being furious. I would be too.

You are not responsible for any loonies out there
By having feedback like I got from this site, gave me an understanding of how to approach this sorta awkward situation. You just have people out there that seem to thrive on what they perceive to be right and what is the actual truth.
Yes. Make your teenager responsible for as much as she can pay for.
and maybe a little more. Don't make it easy. Make sure that she has to work a little (not so much that grades suffers), has to budget, and plan and take the responsibility of driving seriously. This is more than likely the most dangerous thing your child has done so far her life. Make sure she understands that. It's not a social thing, a drive-around-with-your-friends thing. Preparing a young person for driving responsibilities is life and death.
Unfortunately, in the last three yeas, I've been to three funerals for teenage drivers -- all of whom were out of control in every aspect of their lives. Our state does not allow children to become licensed drivers until age 16-1/2. Our house rule was age 17. We did pay for the driver's ed, because it was pricey, our sons truly could not afford it, and we wanted our boys to have ever chance to learn to drive safely. Even though we taught them ourselves, as well, sometimes kids hear better what total strangers say to them! Also, I had a rule during permit driving sessions with my boys. They were never allowed to argue with me while we drove together. I was the teacher. I knew more than them. No arguing over anything, or else I terminated the lesson, car was pulled over, I drove home and that was the end until I felt we were ready for another driving lesson. That rule drove home how serious a responsibility driving is. I only had to do it once to one of my sons.
My oldest was lucky enough to inherit is grandfather's pristine 1991 Toyota (38,000 original miles) when pop-pop no longer could drive. It's a decent, dependable car. My son pays for repairs and gas. We pay for the insurance at this point, simply because we live in a big eastern city, and insurance is sky high. But, our son is also paying his own college tuition, so I have no problem helping him out with the insurance on his car.
This is a big deal. Make sure your daughter grasps the gravity of the responsibility. Don't argue with her about anything. These decisions have to be made by the parents, because it's a health and safety issue for your daughter and everyone else on the road with her.
Make him responsible for the decision
If he wants to switch schools and give up the scholarship, tell him he has to get the funding to do it. I had to do the same thing with my daughter. She gave up a good scholarship at a great private school for pharmacy because she wanted to come back closer to home to be around her boyfriend. She ended up having to take out the loans to pay for it.

There is nothing written in stone that says we have to pay for our children's educations. It is nice if you can help as a parent, but I think kids learn much more if they have some of their own resources invested.
Dear Ms Thinks she is responsible
Truely funny how pitbull owners go on the defensive with what other dogs do. I am sure animal control knows how to be around and handle but even these people are attacked by these dogs. I rescue animals (not these as I want no responsibility for their acting out)but where I rescue these dogs are not adopted out, just put down. Even the people who are in the "know" so to speak do not want to be responsible.
YOU are not responsible for his debts, HIS ESTATE is....
You should read the posts better.

Was your brother your stepbrother and your mother your stepmother?

Therefore you did not care to help in locating your stepnephew/niece, so that they can get their shares?
No, you can not be held responsible for their bill -
nm
You shouldn't feel responsible....

As mean as it sounds, you have put up with it and YOU have decided for yourself that enough is enough and if you tell him so and IF he bounces back to alcoholism, then basically he is a grown man and that is HIS choice, you cannot let it affect you or make you feel responsible.

My sister-in-law is in the same boat as far as her husband being an alcoholic.  It has put so much stress on her and their children and it has been going on about 15 years.  He won't seek help though and she won't leave him.  She just says that she is hoping one day he wakes up and sees what a good wife she is.  I feel bad for her that she has wasted so much time on someone like that.

You are only responsible for changing your behavior, not someone elses
I am the product of a divorce years and years ago and thank goodness my mother had enough sense to not stay with my father. He was actually caught running around on her with other women. I knew my father growing up, spent time with he and my stepmom, loved her but I missed absolutely nothing by not having him in my house every day. You are responsible for your own self-. The advice you are giving is like saying a man messes around on a woman, drinks too much and maybe after the marriage he will change. You can only make yourself happy, no one else can do that for you. I have never had a time when I could not stand my husband, never and I would believe he probably feels the same. We laugh when others say they have to work at marriage- we just do not get this. Like I said, product of divorce, happily married myself, never missed my father, saw him but never, ever close in my life. By the way, I am one of the older and wiser group also.
Because you breed out of wedlock then that makes you a responsible person?
Sorry, not where I come from. I am so glad I did not bring home (well years ago it just WAS NOT done) children. If a female got pregnant, sent away to an unwed mother home, most of the time the child given up for adoption. When I was growing up you did not pop out babies right and left without a husband. I have had more than my share of responsibility, been able to stand on my own 2 feet and provide really well for my family. I made the right decision for me and do not regret and have never looked back on my decisions.
I completely believe Howard Stern is responsible for both Daniel
much for it just to be overdoses in two cases.  I don't buy it.
O talks about our government being fiscally responsible and his wife is wearing $500 designer shoes.
It's not "her money to spend as she pleases."  It's my money, your money, his money, her money.  O better put up or shut up and that means his family too.  No more big talk about the deficit, fiscal responsbility, and redistribution of wealth when when his wife is walking around in designer duds.  Am I the only person that sees hypocrisy in that?
I know the feeling.......

For all of us feeling sorry for ourselves

ok - i'm not feeling sorry for myself because this is the story of my life - but I do feel very bad for my sister who is not even 60 yet.

First off - about 6 weeks ago my son hurt his knee playing softball - he had surgery and is on the mend - he has OI (osteogenesis imperfecta - so he knew he shouldn't be playing to begin with).

Then a month ago - got a call and my sister had fallen at work and broke her hip. Had surgery - OT/PT rehab, and was in the hospital until last wednesday - having home PT and doing much better.  Then, on Saturday, she fell while getting back into bed and fractured her facial bones - she got dizzy and fell to the floor - falling onto the hip that was broken and onto her knees and then face.  So, back to the ER - more CTs and now facial fractures.  She wants me to take her to the pharmacy to get her diabetic supplies, since they found her to be diabetic while in the hospital (although I think it is probably really from the trauma since they didn't bother to do a hemoglobin A1C and just took blood sugars 4 times a day - and put her on insulin (someone's screw up) and I really don't want to take her out of the house - does anyone blame me.

I'm just asking here for prayers and good thoughts for her.  She has had a hard life - 3 marriages (she's now married to the physical therapist who was our dad's PT when he broke his hip back in 1999) and just generally hard times.  We are thankful that she has her current husband - and I would much rather him take her to the store when he gets home than me - but I'm gonna go ahead and call her - pray that she is too tired to go - and let that be that -

this is such a great place -

No, not feeling better- had a dog
dognapped before, not good. My neighbors cat caught a squirrel outside and I ran to rescue the squirrel and the cat ran and needless to say I was no help at all. Did you have one of those exotic cats by any chance, wonder why so wild? I have 3 cats and I entertain them by opening the shades and letting them view the birds but I could never let them be outside, seen too many animals killed that way and anyway our community has rules regarding no animals running around loose.
I know exactly what you were feeling. sm
My daughter is only 14 but she is such a "Daddy's girl" I can only imagine what her wedding day will be like. I will be a happy mess but my hubby will probably totally fall apart.
Thanks so much everyone - Fox is feeling a bit better sm

this evening. He was very lethargic this morning and I was concerned that the fentanyl patch wasn't controlling his pain, and I refuse to let him live in pain.

I gave him some Metacam (vet said it was okay) and gradually during the day he has perked up. We still have to lift him up because he has a hard time getting up but once he's up he's walking pretty well.

And he's still got a bit of a sparkle in his eyes...I think that's how I'll know. If the sparkle leaves and doesn't come back, it's time. But please God, not for a while yet....

Have been there and I know the feeling but
I got over the just burning, ticked off feelings I had, for no reason at all that I could explain. This was probably when I was in my 40s. I just did not want to talk to anyone, did not seem to want to be around anyone but get this, now in the 60s and golden years, what a difference! No more anger, loving life, sweet beyond imagination, no financial difficulties, basically nothing to worry about except when do the cats need feeding again! Yours probably will pass also. I cannot tell you or anyone else what was causing mine but I have so gotten over it, just took awhile. I do not think for 1 minute mentally related. Hormones? Who knows but as I age life just keeps getting better and better.
Been there and know how you are feeling

I lost my Tasha (chow/lab) this last May after 16 1/2 years but I did not make the decision she did and passed away on her own.  It was hard, have two cats but it is not the same as a dog.  Still tear up when I think about her but she is out of her pain and running like a puppy again I am sure.  I swore no more dogs but low and behold finally in November went to Humane Society and pick up Molly (another chow mix but a lot smaller) and did ot realize how much I missed a dog.   Back to walking and socializing.  Am getting a digital camera later this week and once I learn how to use it, will get her picture on here so I can brag.  These little furry things bring so much into our lives and ask for so little.   Love my cats too and they love the new dog.  Decided on the dog in my life instead of trying to find another man.   Take care, treasure your memories and love your remaining brood.  Thoughts and prayers, Patti

I know the feeling
Last week I went to have a tooth extracted, was not impacted, I just broke it - when I went in the receptionist told me that it would be a surgical extraction rather than simple - they had not even looked at my mouth, when I questioned it, she said she would see what the dentist said and did - when he finished pulling the tooth, he proceeded to put in a suture - I asked the assistant why and she said he does it to prevent a dry socket - okay, I have never had one before - the receptionist then told me that since he sutured it, it was a surgical extraction and costed me 3 times as much as a simple extraction would have, simply because he sutured it closed to prevent the dry socket. Kind of a rip off in my opinion.
I know the feeling of getting nothing

done.  I have 3 boys, ages 10, 7 and 5.  I work 2 part-time jobs and I specifically scheduled myself off 1 of them on Monday, knowing they would be home.  Fortunately, it was nice enough out that they could play outside in the afternoon while I worked and then had baseball practice in the evening (all 3 of them woo-hoo) so I could get to the track and the store.

I actually got to sleep in yesterday and got some cleaning done before I went to work (I do work at home).  Overall, it was a pretty nice day off, but I learned a long time ago not to try to work an 8-hour day with 3 kids home.  It just doesn't work.

same feeling here
I only had one child and I too think that it was really hard work - not just physically but emotionally - trying to give them all the right tools/knowledge, etc. to become responsible, productive adults. . We must have done something right because my 23 year old is quite an amazing young lady. I do miss the times when she was little and loved almost every minute of it, but I wouldn't want to go back and do it over.
I have a feeling.....

they Mike and Susan will get back together eventually.............

Sorry you are feeling so down (sm)
First of all, relax. You need to go to a doctor and get on an antidepressant? No insurance? If you can get the money to go to the doc for one visit, you can get them to prescribe an antidepressant that is on Walmart's $4 list and get it for $4 a month. Call United Way and see if they can direct you where to get help with your rent. Don't worry about whether or not you have cable, you'll be okay without that unless you need it for your job? Don't worry about not being able to give Christmas gifts...just explain that you don't have the money. People will understand and your grandson can have it explained to him. I have the same isolation issues that you do because of the job. Can you go to a temp agency and see about getting a job outside of your house so you can be around people more? There is a website called Exercisefriends.com where you can meet people in your area who want exercise buddies, maybe just someone who is starting out trying to walk every day or something like that (not sure what your fitness level is). Or advertise on Craigslist for a walking buddy (but be careful of course when first meeting the person). I met one of my best friends this way and have known her for 4 years now. If you want an email buddy feel free to email me. I think everyone is struggling right now and it is hard. I would be happy to have you vent to me via email all you want. :-)
I know the feeling though
I wish i could exchange my cat!!
I know the feeling...
my son tests me every day even though the answer in the end will be no...normal behavior...I also wanted to say I think you are brave for getting out of bad marriage, so good for you for being a good Mom and taking care of your kids!!!
