Yes, I'm a single person - sm

Two people could not fit in this cottage it is so small.  The $1,100 mortgage alone I could not do without working for 2-3 companies consistently.  And pay a car payment or take a trip on top of that?  Or pay for medical insurance?  Forget it, it's not in the budget.  If I have a slow week my finances are in ruin.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

1,000 as a single person with no exemptions
(I'm assuming only, since DP is a renter.)

If she brings home 1,000 a week say, her FEDERAL taxes she needs to set aside weekly are:

$174.90 Tax
$62.00 FICA
$14.50 M-care
-----------------
$251-PER WEEK for Fed Taxes

***THEN THERE ARE STATE TAXES.***

When you take state taxes into account, of course it varies from state to state,...
but they're usually worse than federal. What is she really KEEPING/bringing home?

Let's just hope DP doesn't live in California or similar states.
Single person and bills
How does any single preson today make ends meet as an MT?  I work a 2nd job and still way behind in bills.  Job-hunting for a full time position other than MT is fruitless, as employers take on look at all of your years in transcription and ask you how you think can do anything else.  It seems like a curse.  The dreaded "transcription" word is getting me nowhere fast when it comes to breaking in to other clerical work.  Had I know this would be the case, I would have left the MT field years ago.  I can do SO much more than transcription if given the chance.  Maybe I should lie on my resume and not mention all the years of transcription.

You said, "A single mom to me means nothing more than 1 person working"...cont'd
"If they need to make more money to live, maybe they should get another job as I did years ago when I was a divorced mother."

How can you say, "a single mom to me means nothing more than 1 person working." Have you totally overlooked the fact that God knows how many children are involved???

A full-time college student who commutes between work and school is 1 person working.

You make it sound like there is nothing significant about a single mother who is never home and has children that are left unattended to fend for themselves. Do you not realize that this setting is not a healthy environment for a child or the mother??

No offense to the single moms out there working their tails off to raise their children without the help of the father. I don't believe any mother who is worthy of being called mother, would choose to put herself and children in this situation. Unfortunately, there are times when it just cannot be avoided.

To the poster, I don't even know what to say. How you could say such things in such a matter-of-fact tone, actually proves my point without me having to say another word.

Point was is the person willing to make up for the slack of the person who types 1 job when there is

if that is all they WANT to type.   Is the person who wants to be a supervisor willing to make up for those people?

You have crap supervisors, editors and mts in the business like you have good ones.   Sadly, the really good ones of all of them are few and far between.

Being a family person (sm)
if you are close to your family and saw them often, I wouldn't want to be apart from them.  I feel for you.  You must really love him to move away from your loved ones.  Unless you can visit family often, I'd want to move back.  If he loves you enough, he will try and accommodate your wishes.  No flames please, just offering my opinion.
Is MT a job that a person can raise a family on?

Curious how MTs do it.

My family now has a hard and fast rule... (lm)
Nobody who is incapacitated/confused/at all unaware is EVER alone in the hospital.

Family comes from all over if we have to, but that's what you do. Family takes care of each other no matter the inconvenience, and having good friends, good neighbors, and a good church helps, too.

We learned that after my father suffered a head injury and was confused and combative and kept trying to get out of his bed, pull out his IV, etc. Someone from the family was with him most all of the time. Family only left when someone from the church or a friend or a neighbor came to stay. (The church had people sign up to come stay with him so that we could get a break, and neighbors would just show up and say "go get something to eat. NOW! ". God bless them all...)

Thank God, my father made an almost complete recovery. He has some personality changes and hearing loss, but nothing we all can't handle. I would NEVER leave a loved one alone in the hospital unless they were FULLY alert and oriented.
My family's not into hard liquor. Beer on one side and wine on the other.
Ugh. I only "like" to drink alcohol maybe once a month.
No you are not! I'm a single mom and I'm trying to make a house payment, pay utilities.... SM

buy groceries, and provide for my two kids all on one paycheck.  I recently got a job doing QA and getting paid per hour and that has helped me tremendously, but I know how it is to scrape by on 8 cpl, low line counts due to a number of factors that work against us (high ESL accounts, technical difficulties, and interruptions).  It isn't worth shelling out $300 for certification when you get very little in return not to mention the $300 could be better spent on clothes for the kids or to pay the electric bill or to buy groceries, etc.

We should be treated better than slave labor!  It's ridiculous and very discouraging to say the least.  Hang in there!  I've been studying coding on my own and I'm about confident enough to take the CCS exam.  After that, I may move on to RHIT, but that means back into the office.  So we'll see.

is there an adapter that can be applied to make regular single prong headphones (sm)
(the kind of prong that would fit into computer speakers or an IPOD) fit into the two-prong outlet of a Dictaphone machine?  What I would like to do is use my Bose noise-cancelling headphones with my Dictaphone C-phone.  Could someone point in my the right direction of finding such an adapter?  TIA
I would never sacrifice my family. If you can make
ends meet on what you are doing now, I would stay put. Your kids are only going to be kids for a short time! Good luck to you.
Sure am. Hopefully the baby will make her more family oriented! nm

RE: How can one person make it
If you get a job at a hospital and then take part-time job, you might can make it.
I agree to this one! And I thank them that they are there so I can be here w/my family!! nm
;
I agree..that was the only way to get family
members to stop calling. It didn't matter how many times I said I was working or on a deadline or in a middle of a stat report, they just didn't get it until I quit picking up the phone! Nine times out of ten they didn't leave a message, so just how important was the call?
i don't know why people make fun of mq and ceo(s) of mq. they are trying so hard

it takes TIME to award these prizes and to figure out pay increases.  They have priorities you know.  They are fighting lawsuits, figuring out bonuses for management and trying to save their own jobs or at least accumulate some cash in an offshore bank before going to jail or getting fired for running a scam operation bilking the shareholders, clients and MTs.

Just be patient.  In a year or so Frank will come through (or at least his replacement) as to who won the Hawaii trip.

Enough already! I am a very caring person. I don't make a lot of money either.
I still have canned goods stocked up and I know how to wash out a plastic soda bottle or milk jug and fill it up with water when I'm told to do so. That has nothing to do with posttraumatic stress or FEMA. I never said anything about either of those, so quit jumping down my throat about things I never said. It's not about the people that NEED help because they lost everything. It's about the people in their Lincoln Town Cars who can obviously afford a jug of water and DID not do it. The ones who didn't bother to prepare are sucking up the resources that should be used for those people who lost everything and NEED the help. How can you disagree with that?
No, that doesn't make you a horrible person.

Completely agree...you have to do what works for your family.
I wish you the best of luck, and keep us updated! :)
Your MTs will find it hard to make any money with eScription.

I definitely feel like we are dealing with the same person! I think I need to make some phone calls
and put a stop to her!  I cannot stand the idea that she is out there still scamming people like she scammed me!
I agree, but it's so hard getting used to at first. -nm

YES, your email has COMPLETE protection on this site. We have worked VERY hard to make sure
that e-mail addresses are protected.  Spheris did not glean your email address from this site.  In the meantime, if you enter your email address in the E-mail field, you can be emailed, but the sender cannot see your email address.  They have no idea WHAT your email address is.  ONLY if YOU reply to them will the sender then find out what it is.  If you have further questions, email me and we'll discuss it.
not a liar, not an old person, I make waaaaay over $20/hour, probably double (CA, .15-.17 line) sm

I have two accounts of my own and do vacation coverage for a few other MTs as well as occassional work for a lawyer and a psychologist.  I charge .15 for one clinic and .17 for the other clinic... clinic #2 is a husband/wife neurologist team, and the husband was a major A&& at first... with a very strong accent and every possible bad dictator habit you can imagine.  I told wife I would transcribe for her, but not for him, I had plenty of business.  She said charge whatever you want, have whatever turnaround time you want, just please don't leave.  At the time they were at .12... so I upped them to .17.  That was 5 years ago and now after having gotten to know him and his *quirks* I adore them both.  I am an IC, but they give me very large gift cards for Christmas, kind of in lieu of a bonus, I guess.

Clinic #2... just this week took on another physician and I told them point blank it was too much for me to provide quick service and they may want to consider a service.  They said no way, we changed the turnaround time to one week with stats as needed.  I even asked them if they considered voice recognition and the office manager laughed and laughed.

I am just now putting both clinics on digital, and after the initial cost, this will increase my estimated hourly wage as it will take away my delivery time and cost, and my paper and ink printing cost and time.  Though I still plan to visit each office on a regular basis for customer service and because I know my customer service is what got me here in the first place.

For the *occasional* work, the lawyer and pysch I charge $50/transcription hour.

I know you will all doubt me.  But I work extremely hard, have put in my time with my education - not just learning MT but learning the ropes of running a business and how to do everything smarter, faster, and in the most efficient and sensible way possible.  I also have another business I do in a totally different field!  I am very blessed.  Well, I also know the fields I have chosen were perfect for me, and also I've had good luck.  You know what I think though?  I think my sense of humor and just being as honest and open and observant as possible has made this possible.

Has anyone used Tessier paper back version 5 x 8 book with over 2000 pages - does that make it hard

I agree...working at home with children is possible just very hard...
I have a 9-year-old and an 18-month-old and I wake up early in the morning before the kids wake up and work and then work some more during my daughter's nap...there are days I want to pull my hair out but my children don't suffer and neither does my job...thank goodness my company is flexible otherwise I couldn't do it...

Being these are pretty darn important documents, it's equally as important for us to get it right as it is for them to slow down so we can truly actually hear what they're trying to say. It's a joint effort that often falls short on their end for whatever reason.
I agree. Life is too short. Be the bigger person and keep reaching out.
My sister is a big 'ol gossip.  She has talked about me more times than I can remember and she has been telling our mom on my all my life.  She and I would have bitter fights as adults and not speak for months at a time, but then one day I realized that she's never going to change.  So I basically stopped confiding in her things I didn't want to the world or my mom to know and moved on.  We have a great relationship now mostly because I won't allow myself to be in a position where she can make me angry.
I totally agree. Them not paying is NOT hearsay. It is fact so why let them scam hard-working MTs.
SAY NO.. to their advertising. What a scam they have going.
I agree, but where can I make what I do at MT
I see no way out of it, but do agree with you that depression and anxiety are rampant in transcription circles. Thanks for a wonderful post.  At least we are not alone here.
Agree, you can make much more
I average $20-25 per hour at home (left a $12 in house job to work at home), and this is at only 8 cpl.  I don't think you have to worry about making less than $9 per hour.
For once I agree with you. OP needs to make self

Make sure everything you agree to
is in clearly defined writing as well!!
I agree. I make 8 cpl and get $29.00/hour
you have to stay in one place long enuf to get used to the dictators, then you can make good money wiht them
I agree with you, and this is why we don't make more money too sm
Seems like, if you don't have a magic wand dangling between your legs, you don't count for much. This is still the 21st Century...kinda sad isn't it?
I agree with the average as 0.08 to 0.85, however if you type 200/lph you will make much more than y

Great post and i agree 100%. As a former depressed person myself, ,I learned that the most depressed
people are self-centered whether they want to admit or not. I stayed in my cave and only talked about me and my problems and I was severely depressed (runs in family)
After I found God and started attending church regularly, I have completely changed and am off medications. I also give lovingly now to my husband, children, family, and friends and have recently taken over teaching a large woman's Bible study class locally and have never experienced such joy, peace, and happiness in my life.
It wasn't until I began taking my eyes off of me and started looking around at others in more desparate situations that I began to learn the true meaning of life.
Great post. I, too, think fasting is a life-changing exp. When I fasted from food for the first time (I am very overweight :) it was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. There's just something about withholding something that you truly desire or want - it's like putting out flames to a destructive fire within you and it feels GREAT!!!!
If it rains hard, the wind blows hard and there are trees
nearby, it snows heavily it will mess up the signal.  The speed is not constant, sometimes as slow as dial-up, but at least still connected.  Many companies will not allow satellite.
I work for the person. I know. Very excellent person, personally and business-sense.
It is an INSULT to have QA hovering over seasoned MTs who know what they are doing. She trusts her MTs and again if there are questions there is one person, a trainer, who can answer them via phone, e-mail or instant message or you can send the whole report to them if you choose.
Have to agree. Kids do make working at home "different" (sm)

Mine are grown, but the grandchildren occasionally are over.  The oldest one will play his Gameboy or some cube thing all day and only occasionally ask to be fed.  However, when the youngest one can't go do daycare for some reason my world is turned upside down.  The granddaughter has it in her head that when I ask her to be quiet it means come over to my desk and whisper.  All in all, it isn't too often that I have children in my house when I work.  My hat is off to those of you who do it on a regular basis, you are queens of organizational/concentration skills.

RE: I totally agree!! I work at home can came make upwards or $25+ per hour (sm)
Where outside of my home could I make that money, not have to pay gas, buy extra clothes, etc.  I am very happy right where I'm at.
So, you think it is okay for hard-working MTs to earn 7-8 cpl for their hard work?? nm
