Small Claims Court - it's easy sm
a few years back, i worked part-time for a one-woman company who had a psych hospital account.  All was great until she went through a mid-life crises, kicked her husband out, got a tattoo, changed everything about her, and then had me doing all the work... the last month i worked for her, she owed me $3,300 and refused to pay... wouldn't answer my calls or her door... so i took she and her company to small claims court... she didn't show up for that either and i was awarded the judgment via default.  I filed a wage garnishment with the psych hospital and they promptly terminated her contract... so then i filed a lien against her house and 3 years later when she sold it, i got paid... I did all of this without any help from an attorney - piece o' cake...I had the sheriff's department serve her, which was like $25 or so, and then whatever filing fees, which were minimal... good luck to you!
If you are wanting to make it bigger, but
not affect the final report, look on your tool bar and there should be a box that has a number/percentage in it. Mine says 100%. You can increase it there so it is bigger on the screen, but does not change the "font" of the report. This is in MS Word.
Agree with Small Claims Court.

You can't fault someone for wanting to make a living.

Outsourcing simply means that big corporations show bigger profits and the CEOs get bigger bonuses.  They claim that it's good for the economy because the companies and CEOs have more money to spend, gag me with their trickle down economics theory, but they refuse to see what it does to the working class people.  It's going to be interesting to see what happens in this country down the road as more and more working class people lose their jobs to offshoring.  What, are we all going to sign up for unemployment and welfare?  Will crime go up as we all start stealing just to put food on the table?  I wonder what's going to happen.

Wanting to make providers accountable
Love your message! I have done some writing and other things, but it is still the same and, in fact, out of control now. I wish we could post a list of all providers and companies who are outsourcing so we could know who to avoid. Is there a comprehensive list yet? I find it relatively easy to find out who transcribes for individuals in my area, but not the hospitals and clinics and I have lived here for years and years. It is some "big secret" or something. I wish we would share information in order to avoid having our personal information doled out to foreign sources. I would choose the hospital or large clinic staffed by Americans.
I can't imagine any father not wanting to make sure his flesh and blood

We make it look easy

The reason so many people think it is such a glamorous job is because those of us who have been doing it for years make it look so easy.  We can sit in front of our computer (at home) and breeze along through the toughest ESL dictators without picking up a book.  Why wouldn't everything thing they could do this.

Reality will show your friend that there is a lot more to being an MT than just typing.  I think back to the days before internet when I had to use a book to look up every difficult or new word.  Very time consuming.  At least new MTs have internet resources.

I exaggerated the part about
1/2 the pay for working twice as hard, but in my opinion that is quickly becoming the trend...

Also, I apologize ahead of time, for any typos.  I am not on the clock right now and am not obsessive/compulsive about it all...

This is grossly exaggerated.
The US does not have the best health care. The Canadian wait times is multifactorial is not based soley because it is socialized medicine. Of course, there is a wait time for elective surgeries. Absolutely not are people waiting years for cancer treatment.

This is always the mantra for those who are afraid of socialized medicine to exaggerate the pitfalls and completely ignore the high points.

Educate yourself on the subject and here is a start:

Easy mistake to make! (nm)
nm
Repetitive = easy, so no, they usually don't make more.
But there are exceptions to every rule, of course. As was stated in another post on radiology, the software is usually maddeningly inefficient, so sometimes it is hard to find and retain MTs for certain facilities. But the reason the software is bad for MTs is that they usually bought it with the hope they could change over to VR, thereby putting most of the MTs out of work. Radiology can be fun if you find a place where you can work in-house, have the skills to win the respect of the radiologists and learn to be able to read their minds, which helps you a lot when they misspeak.
It is NOT an easy way to make money
and most companies advertising at-home training and promising the moon are out for your money. Medical transcription is a CAREER and not a JOB. Stick with engineering and do some crafting on the side to make "extra money."
You make it sound so easy, BUT
I believe medical editing is more difficult than straight transcribing, especially if the MT lack years of experience. If the VR text indicates an incorrect term but it looks and sounds close to the accurate term, it would be very easy for an inexperienced MT to not realize that mistake and not make the proper correction. I only hope the physicians are reading their reports. Unfortunately, many of them do not because of time constraints.

With my 20+ years' experience,I do foresee potential problems with VR in the hands of inexperienced MTs. Unfortunately, many MTs will lack the necessary editing skills to acquire a 100% accuracy rate. They have mainly been taught to transcribe verbatim.

We will have to wait and see if any major issues present themselves with VR. I think it could be a very efficient system, but I do not believe the job of editing should not be taken too lightly. I think editing VR text could be easier if you are simply editing for a few physicians, but not for a multitude of dictators in the hospital setting.

Line counters...(sm)

There is no such thing as "gross line without spaces". You can count character lines without spaces, and you can count gross lines with or without counting blank lines (and perhaps that is what she meant). By the way... Abacus can count either way plus several other ways, and at $20 it is the lowest priced line counter that I have found.

line counters
Is there any difference between using a line counter i buy or word 2000s word count.  taking the characters with spaces, divided by 65 for my pitiful amount of lines?  When I started 21 years ago, I got one cent less a line than I do now and that was counting every line with at least two words on it.  Impressive, huh?
line counters
Is there a line counter that counts a line with any amount of word instead of by character. I count each line myself and I make alot less by 65 character. I have found it either counts every line even if no words or by character.

so easy to make your own baked chicken and tastes better.
Just wash a whole chicken (clean inside, as well) Then salt inside.

Put it breast-side DOWN on small baking rack in shallow baking sheet (I line the pan with foil first), bake at 350 for 30 minute, then turn the bird over onto its back (drain the cavity when you turn it over, put those droppings in the bottom of the cookie sheet). Bake for another hour, turn over (and drain cavity again) for 15-30 minutes, and then turn back on its back for a little longer. I do put some foil over the bird for the first hour or so just to save splatters on the oven. With whole chicken at 69 cents a pound, you just cannot get an cheaper, easier meal than this.
Well, I would like to applyl. I hope you can make a go of it but it will not be an easy road. If

kettle corn is great, easy to make, and you can spice it up...
and there are pretzels, potato chips, veggie chips. you can quickly roast any kind of nut and spice or sweeten them up. I use sucranat for sugar, or turbanado, anything not bleached.

yummy fruit, fresh or frozen.

lots of things you can do...
I agree---not that easy.

I edit for many specialites and docs and would love to know how you could do 1100/hr.  I believe you, but I just do not see how it is possible.  I only do 300 an hour on a good day, but I am sure that I am on the slow end.  I do know it helps if you use your mouse less and use the short cut keys, which I do not and know that this is hindering me.  Could you please give some tips?

Sue

I agree. It was very easy to install.
Mine even has pictures on it to show where to plug everything in. :)

I agree, but where can I make what I do at MT
I see no way out of it, but do agree with you that depression and anxiety are rampant in transcription circles. Thanks for a wonderful post.  At least we are not alone here.
Agree, you can make much more
I average $20-25 per hour at home (left a $12 in house job to work at home), and this is at only 8 cpl.  I don't think you have to worry about making less than $9 per hour.
For once I agree with you. OP needs to make self

Have to agree. Kids do make working at home "different" (sm)

Mine are grown, but the grandchildren occasionally are over.  The oldest one will play his Gameboy or some cube thing all day and only occasionally ask to be fed.  However, when the youngest one can't go do daycare for some reason my world is turned upside down.  The granddaughter has it in her head that when I ask her to be quiet it means come over to my desk and whisper.  All in all, it isn't too often that I have children in my house when I work.  My hat is off to those of you who do it on a regular basis, you are queens of organizational/concentration skills.
