But he sure is quick to throw blame on everyone else.

Mayor NO followed NONE of the procedures he was supposed to
Heard this on the radio.  There are certain steps in the city emergency procedures that are to be followed on a local level, state level, national level.   The mayor of NO for all his complaining about the Federal Government, did not follow any of the procedures he was required to.  Interesting.
Followup (or follow-up) for noun/adj. Follow up for verb. nm

I'm not angry when I say this about the mayor - sm
The mayor kept telling people to leave over and over and over again. He stated that he knew thousands did not have cars. He even said "this is the real thing, folks." Why didn't he provide school buses or city buses to get these people out - just take a few belongings, get on the bus, and get out of the city.

Did your husband know that the plans the mayor of NO used

were the same plans that were specified by the Department of Homeland Security when they did a simulation of this disaster in the 4 years prior?  When FEMA was absorbed by the DHS, they did simulations of events like hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.  In their simulation called Hurricane Pam, which was only simulated as a category 3, they said that the only place available as a shelter in this type of storm was the Superdome.  They studied this for years.  The mayor followed their recommendations.

As far as buses being available, the mayor made the public transportation system available for free but that was only inside the city of N.O.  He can't make private sector transportation services provide free transportation OUT of the city and then, again, he could have used the public transportation and the school bus system to transport them out of the city, but to where?  These people had no money - where were they going to go?  The only option the mayor had was to use the recommendations of the DHS and house them in the Superdome.  What other city was available in Louisiana that would have housed hundreds of thousands of people in shelters designed to withstand a category 4 (possibly 5) storm?  There was none.

There was an article published yesterday in which many administration officials described how FEMA would work since it was absorbed into the Department of Homeland Security and what the responsibilities would be if the president declared any disaster an incident of national significance.  It was an excellent article and very eye-opening.   FEMA isn't the FEMA we knew from years ago that could act independently and at a quicker pace.

and he as mayor of that city had no responsibility at all?
Such convoluted logic. Believe me, he's doing a great job of pointing the finger of blame and ducking responsibility on his own without any help from you.
I think it was the mayor of Fort Lauderdale that I saw on TV.
He was going through where people could go for shelter, etc, how the government was prepared. BUT, he also POINTED OUT that it is an individual's RESPONSIBILITY to PREPARE for themselves. C'mon PEOPLE, RESPONSIBILITY is an individual thing. Why does everyone expect the GOVERNMENT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM instead of PREPARING for THEMSELVES! This is probably the BIGGEST PROBLEM with America today. PEOPLE DO NOT WAHT TO BE RESPONSIBLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES. It's so much easier to expect others to do it and complain and whine when they don't get what they EXPECT. THIS IS TRULY SAD FOR AMERICA!
Comment about New Orleans and Ray Nagin, the Mayor...sm

I just read below that a lot of you believe that Ray Nagin is a "hero" for speaking his mind, etc.  My DH just told me this morning that he read the evacuation plans for New Orleans and what the city and its leaders (Nagin being the main leader) were supposed to do in the event of a hurricane, flood, etc.  The manual stated that ALL public transportation was to be used to but the elderly, sick, poor, and those unable to get out to higher ground until the storm or catastrophe passed.  He did not do that. He got on tv and told those to get out. No public transportation or school buses were used to get these people out.

I hate to judge, but I just cannot help but think that this guy is all talk and no action?  I don't know, sure does sound like it to me.  I too thought he was awesome, until my husband explained the evacuation procedures and how the city did nothing but warn of people to get out - and did not help them....

I know, sounds like the blame game and I am sorry if it sounds like I'm blaming.  I just can't help but state this when now the facts are coming to light.

Maybe ALL the tourists didn't have access to the mayor
Yeah, he's a regular Rudy Guiliani isn't he? You don't have a clue.

"Good" reality TV?
Sounds like an oxymoron to me.  There are many things I'd rather do than watch boring TV.
"good" days is right sm
At least we had our fingers on the pulse, albeit full of carbon paper. At least we were face to face with our employers or clients. Today who knows where our work is going and who is "editing" it. I have responses from companies such as "received your test results and you will "here" from us. Felt like e-mailing it back to her supervisor, but she WAS the supervisor! Gimme hands-on, face-to-face, we were tired and poor but we knew who we were dealing with!
If the clinic does procedures or is SM

accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of HEALTHCARE Organizations, they have to comply.

I think gynecologic procedures
get me- it makes me sick to my stomach to hear some of the stuff they do, like I can feel it myself. And could there be a creepier term than uterine cry???
I have them for routine procedures for
the same doc -- T&A, cholecystectomies, appy's, and a lot of my orthopedic doctors. I also have them for ROS and PE exams. I just leave jump markers for values, right/left, and things like that.
And once you have a "good" sample,
SAVE A COPY for yourself in your own samples file.
I like procedures/ops, because of not fooling with grammar much or Sm
drugs, new stuff. I am lazy and don't like to work very long in the day!
Ask your QA what the account considers procedures sm
and make a list.

This really CAN be confusing at times.
What types of procedures? I love doing

cardiac caths because most docs will say the same thing over and over, same for bypass grafting, just different grafts and locations.  All in all the procedures stay basically the same.  This also works for cardioverting, just change the joules where appropriate.  When I do a cath or other procedure for the first time. I will make a normal for it then make changes as they come along.  These procedures can be good for the line count!.  Also, in your short keys, make short cuts for left and right anterior descending, ejection fraction, end diastolic pressure, etc., you get the picture.  They will use these a lot.

I have found that most of the time the more difficult dictators are the ones that will basically go word for word in dictating their reports.  Good luck!

No such thing as "good" money sm
There is money for some - is there any such thing as "bad" money? I was told by a health information "director" with high-level degrees who outsourced 12 million lines per se that we are a "dying breed - dinosaurs" who are going to be obsolete. I wanted to bite her head off. But truthfully, that's how some think of us. So if you are making "good" money, then thank your lucky stars because it may not last. Then you will have to join the ranks of those who are struggling. My past experience is that those who make "good money" don't brag about it. I'm not flaming you, I'm just asking you to have a heart and realize that you have to walk in others' shoes. Sometimes they pinch and some day you may have to wear them. So please calm down and let others speak from their hearts, not their pocketbooks. I used to do a platform in MT on career day at a local college but stopped two years ago because I told the director that I in all honesty could not encourage people to spend two years tuition on a career that may be outsourced and/or obsolete. I really meant that. Nuff said!
Oh, and $10 an hour is considered a "good" wage here.

Tired of SS, any "good" places to work

I know there are many messages on the subject, but am getting tired of putting up with SS bull and would like to know of  for.

I will have 1 year of experience in March.  I'm tired of my line counts never adding up and the differences in the way QA corrects things so I never know which way I'm supposed to do things.  It never fails that I can be making 100% on most everything I do, but when it comes audit time they can find things that bring my audit score to 1 or 2 percentage points below the required 98%.

If there is a company out there that does not require weekends I would love to know as I don't have anybody to watch my 4 and 5 year olds every other weekend.

I'm sorry, I know this is not a grammatically correct message as I am very upset and just want out.  The only problem is that I have nowhere to go once I do get out so I need a new job first.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Tired of SS, any "good" places to work

SS = SoftScript - The main company anyone wants to "RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM" ....  No kidding on this one - been there, done that!

As far as another position have you tried searching on Monster.com or going to any of the Transcription Services web sites?  I believe most services now request you work one weekend day; however, it never hurts to explain your situation and one never knows they may make "special arrangements" with you.  Never be afraid to ask!

It depends on what you define as "good money". sm
I do acute care, part time, no more than 24 hours a week and made 56K for the year.

Everyone's definition of good money is different - I think.

What makes a company "good" to work for?

In reading some posts below, I came across one that peaked my curiosity.  She stated that she has not seen anybody post the name of a high-paying or good company to work for, so this made me think.  I am an IC and have a job but am afraid of losing it as I just lost one account.  So my question is I am completely new to the "big company" scene.  If people are unwilling to divulge who they like working for (for whatever reason), how does one go about researching on what will be worth it or not?

Just curious

Sorry, but if I have an emergency, I would rather have an
RN or RNP around than a fellow MT. It is easy to know the words to use, but putting things into actual use and practice is a different ballgame. Why do you feel so insecure that you have to challenge someone else? You know your field, they know theirs, and let it go at that. This is a child's game.
Not an emergency?

You don't have grandchildren? The only family the girls could live with was the two grandmothers. I only had one child and her husband is also an only child. The military doesn't care what happens to your kids when they send you. Oh wait...I know....we could have put them in a foster home....why didn't I think of that? Any OTHER grandmothers don't think caring for your babies is not an emergency in time of war?

need help fast! Is 8 per 65 character line a "good' rate for an
MT with 10 years of exp? Was offered a position yesterday with a company and right now I make 9.25 - I know I will be losing, but right now I am on DQS and am so sloooowww.. What would you do? Not take it/ Tell them it's just too low? What?!

Emergency Room
I type ER notes at my current job and I get the same thing.  I bet 90% of my reports are for sore throats.  I actually had one a few weeks ago for a cold!  Come on now people!  Everyone knows there is no cure for a cold!  That is why most of us cannot afford health insurance.  I had a couple bring a baby to the ER because it spit up during the night (just once).  Come on!  Babies do spit up.  Natural.  This happens.  Buy a baby book!
If emergency, take your PC and go live where

Computer emergency. Question...
I turned on my extra computer next to my work computer and got a black screen that says "operating system not found"  What the heck happened?  It worked fine yesterday and shut down normally.

emergency room visits

I have often wondered this exact same thing. A lot of people go to the ER who have no health insurance or no primary doctor.

I had one woman bring her child in because he made a funny face after eating a sour fruit candy, I mean come on!

Emergency room report

What sort of background do you need to learn ER reports?

Daily emergency work as IC...

Is it normal for an IC to be called often for emergency reports that need to be completed within a short amount of time - one to two hours.  Is this normal practice?  I get these calls fequently and it makes it difficult to complete the work I was doing, and/or I may be out on my own time when these phone calls come in.  I tend to work best in the evenings so I do most of my chores, etc., during the day.

Poll for IC's - do you have emergency backups for your equipment - sm
I'm wondering how much is enough - I just got a new keyboard so I have my old one for a backup.  Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have emergency back-ups of my other equipment - C-phone, foot pedal, etc.  Anyone else have this?
Be sure to check your local emergency services regarding 9-1-1 sm
Just saw a news story that 9-1-1 is not set up yet on these systems to pull up the home address with the phone call. Just an FYI.
Call the police...the non-emergency number
most communities have noise ordinance laws. If the cops show up enough times they will stop. Trust me, I've done it. I had a neighbor that used to blast music at the wee hours. I tried the *nice neighbor* tactic of asking him not to do that becuase I have a child and we need to sleep, etc. Well, that didn't work. He worked 2nd shift and believed it was his *right* to blast his music whenever he wanted. After I called the cops a few times on him...he stopped, and I haven't heard so much as a peep out of him since!
Quick question or poll - What does one consider "good money" for weekly bring home income? sm

Would you consider $1000 a week, IC status, working 5 hours a day, 5 days a week "great money"?

What do you make a week and how many hours do you work?

This is for informational purposes only and not to belittle or degrade anyone or boast and put anyone on a soapbox about their income.

Thanks for your help!

Does anybody understand the meaning of EmErGeNcY room anymore?

I cannot understand why I type SO many ERs with trivial chief complaints such as:

sore throat - cough - pimple - splinter - blister - farted - (okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but COME ON people!)

The most recent ccx.....Can I take a laxative? Not constipated, just needs to know if she can take a laxative along with her hypertension med. Thought she better go to the ER to ask.

Why are these people allowed to be such a waste of ER resources?

Just a pet peeve....wondering if anyone agrees with me.....perhaps someone else who has spent hours in an ER waiting room for something or other.

Emergency question for brilliant computers techs. sm
I just had a weird experience with my computer.  The screen looked like it was shaking.  I thought it was in Word at first, but the desktop was doing this also.  It was like a wavy line was going down the screen, part of it would jump a little bit, then below it some more would jump.  It was almost like a wave pattern to the side, I could see the edges of the screen moving in and out.  I thought I saw this yesterday once or twice, but decided it was my eyes.  It wasn't, this was definitely real.  It lasted for approximately a minute.  Is this something to worry about?  TIA.
I love procedures, colonscopes, EGDs, cardiac caths - this stuff earns me the good money, ESL or no!
