Good for you. There is no reason any hard working MT should put up with that crap. nm

So, you think it is okay for hard-working MTs to earn 7-8 cpl for their hard work?? nm
:{
I think one reason MTs find it hard to have diverse skills (s/m)
is that for all these years we have been pigeonholed into just one specialty - typing medical reports. When I started MT at my organization, we had a variety of duties. Now we just sit and type. Interestingly, the few who got promotions within or out of the MT department were the ones who weren't too smart, and not very good MTs. The good MTs were kept where they were needed - doing transcription work only. And the smart ones are considered a threat to management, so they have no hope of ever advancing.

I've been to night school to try to broaden my computer skills, and the community college system is totally not on the cutting edge. Everytime I learned something useful, it became obsolete before we could ever implment it in our workplace.

I've looked into changing fields, and one of the big stumbling blocks is all the prerequisites for just about any field of study. Many of them involve the math & science classes I was steered away from due to my gender. (This was the 60s, remember... it was still legal to discriminate back then.) I looked into training as a veterinary technician, and working full-time and going to night school, getting all the classes in that I missed in high school was going to eat up about 4-5 years. It would probably take even longer to get into the vet-tech program. By the time I graduated, I would probably be in my early 70's. What veterinary hospital is going to want to hire a 70 year old newbie who will either retire or die before she's even learned the ropes at the new job?

Meanwhile, what ticks me off is that MT's are expected to have a very broad knowledge of English, medical terminology and computers, and be whiz-bang typists as well. And yet the same people that want speed, accuracy and experience, don't want to pay squat for it.
1 main and 1 backup. You can't get good speed going with too many accounts. Scratch that crap! nm

It's a reason most of us are working at home...
I chose to work at home 11 years ago due to office politics and nastiness in the doc's offices.  As a result, I never have to *get into it* with any of the offices.  EVER!
Not working so hard
I'm not about to bash you or call you a liar either.  Each of us long time MTs have our own stories to tell.  When we have our fellow MTs obviously hurting in this business and seemingly not knowing which way to turn, I for one would rather try to lift them up and make suggestions that might be practical and useful to them. Hearing your (or my) success story isn't likely to accomplish this.

Remember, there's a reason lots of these folks are working at home. nm
it's not because their interpersonal skills were just too good for the traditional office.
working at home is hard work
I have been working at home for 22 years. I used to get the same statements from people asking me what I did all day, until one Sunday in a local paper they compared 8 hours of sitting at a computer and typing to digging ditches 8 hours a day, not as physical but a lot of mental use, especially transcription. I do my housework early in the morning if I get a chance. If I have extra work at night, I have my family order pizza at night. My husband used to say to me what did you do all day and I would tell him, well I typed, did laundry, made beds, went to the grocery store, before I started typing, took kids to baseball practice. Now I am older and wiser and so is my husband and he does not dare ask me what I have done all day as he knows if I am working I am making money and if I have the time I will clean, but if I don't, then it can wait until tomorrow. Occasionally when people would ask me what I did all day (not husband), I would reply "nothing", just sat with my feet up all day lol. My feeling is this, if they don't like it, let them do the laundry, dishes, empty dishwasher, sweep the floor, vacuum, etc, and you know what they do and will. Don't let them get you down. Just because we work at home does not mean we have it made quite contrary, we work hard and just look at how our bodies fall apart because of it.........
Proving that working at home is HARD WORK

HELP!!!!  How can we prove to our significant others that working at home is hard work and just because we are home, we are working and CANNOT always find extra time for laundry, dishes, cleaning, dinner, etc?????

I hear, "you work 6 hours a day, I work 10...I expect everything to be done if you have those extra 4 hours.... " Well, my 6 hours of working is actual sit at the computer and type my fingers to the bone....yes, I take breaks and do have extra time..but then I shower, chat with friends, catch the news..whatever....it is not excessive.  I keep up on the house most of the time, juggle my schedule to pick kids up from school, etc.... so once in a while if I just don't feel like making sure everything around the house is done, i get "What did you do all day..."  I AM SICK OF IT!!!!

My job is a full time job, I make more than I ever had working in an office 40 hours a week.....and I don't want to feel guilty for taking breaks and having some quality time for myself in between working...

Especially when he goes to work and talks to all his coworkers, brags about how easy his job is, sits around waiting for an assignment etc.....  Just because he isn't home to do the laundry on his breaks, why should I?????

sorry this is so long...but I KNOW a lot of you can relate!!!!!

I agree...working at home with children is possible just very hard...
I have a 9-year-old and an 18-month-old and I wake up early in the morning before the kids wake up and work and then work some more during my daughter's nap...there are days I want to pull my hair out but my children don't suffer and neither does my job...thank goodness my company is flexible otherwise I couldn't do it...
What a terrible thing to call a hard-working MT.
Disgusting name to call someone who has worked very hard, probably gone to college to learn this, invested a lot of time and money, perhaps worked in a hospital, certainly worked very hard, to be called a slob!
Merry Christmas to all hard working guys & gals in the MT industry!

It could be any reason. You could be really good
in which case they're dumping all the garbage on you that nobody else can do.  Or as some people on this board say, maybe they're trying to force you out.  (I highly doubt that!)  It's been my experience that if you show that you're eager to work and skilled, you'll get the stuff nobody else wants to do.
I totally agree. Them not paying is NOT hearsay. It is fact so why let them scam hard-working MTs.
SAY NO.. to their advertising. What a scam they have going.
I say she was screaming with good reason
If you don't want to work for her, then don't apply. It's a free country.
I can think of a good reason why...CYA and audit!!!!!!!!!! nm
/
Good reason to smack this doc...
She dictates diagnoses, giving three or four detailed diagnoses and then says, "etcetera, etcetera, etcetera"

OK, do I get to make up additional diagnoses for her? This is at the top of the report, so it's not like she's saying go back and copy admission diagnoses for discharge ones. (Not that THAT would be ok, either!) Am I supposed to read her mind? Or is this just a verbal tick that pops up whenever she's done dictating a list of diagnoses?

Garrrragh!
Of course it was - too many people still believe we went there for a good reason. nm

If you were that good, you would have no reason to complain about it. Maybe you should just ignore
it, but apparently YOU DO have a problem with editors. If you are that good, maybe you will become an editor and SEE exactly what we are talking about!!
I do not get when "in a rush" became a good reason to not find your own answers..
better up my meds I guess.
No reason to feel good about it. Just showing that kids are going to get into trouble
So let them learn how to function in society rather than hide them from it.
A good neighbor is worth a million bucks, they say this for a reason
I purchased a house at a remarkably reduced price because of a neighbor who was a lunatic. First thing I will do the next time I buy is try to get familiar with the neighbors bordering my home. Thank GOD, he moved but for several years, I had to get a restraining order and even with that, he used foul language, sometimes directed at me, tapped into my utilities, had loud fights with four letter words. I could even hear them in the bedroom going at it (yes, i know)... What I say is don't make her angry or she could make your life REALLY miserable. There will be times when you will not be home...people like her resort to all sorts of behavior, I have a feeling.
Maybe that's a good thing - it's a reason for the Indian docs to GO HOME
c
I didn't know I need to post EVERY reason I got into MT...Good God! **rolling eyes***
I stand by my posts as well. YES I did say my children, but pardon me for not listing EVERY SINGLE REASON I got into MT. My children are always number one at the top of my priority list as they should be and that's why I mentioned them. And no, I'm having a good day, but I am astounded with the nastiness on these boards. I've never seen such unahppy people. Is this was MT does to a person?
Also, good MTs hard to find. Might be worth
x
MTSO knows hard to find good MT,especially 1
x
Thats a really good question. Maybe they arent all as hard as the folks below had it.
The person who said they worked all those hours (the 3 dollar person the OP referenced) posted they werent doing it anymore.  That is what I read, but maybe I just assume that those were the same folks.
Even with multiple GOOD dictators, I still find it hard - sm
to do '8 hours' worth of transcription in less than 11-12 hours, mainly due to the lack of ability to make templates, as each doc does his H&P entirely differently. Also they want extraordinary accuracy, grammar clean-up, and proofreading done on each report. So a longish H&P can sometimes take an hour.
Good for you! So nice to see MTs rewarded for their hard very work dedication.

A good MT is hard to find. Check back with those 2 companies

Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
Good luck on teaching your kids but it's a hard lesson to swallow
if a kid is being made fun of and most kids just want to fit in. No one wants their kids hurt needlessly and I hope you consider this because you really can't change the world's perception of trailer parks. I don't know how it got to this point, but it is what it is and your kids should not suffer for it so you can make a defensive statement against all who have preconceived notions of trailer park people, further enhanced by TV shows.
Good working in MT help wanted ad...
It gives the usual stuff about transcribing reports, letters, etc, then says:

"...correct spelling and medical terminology errors using dictionary and medical reference books; edit documents by recognizing, interpreting, and evaluating repetitions, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in dictation; editing, revising, and clarifying without altering meaning and style..."

THIS is why we are so much more than "typists."

Good for you - DH and I are working on a similar

Anybody working for AssistMED? Good? Bad?

God gave us the ability to judge for good reason. Then told us judge not, lest thou be judged. NM

Go for it instead of working two jobs. Good luck.

Is it possible to make good money working for someone else?
.
My MJ is fine for just regular use, but don't think it would be good for working with... nm

Not a good deal! I get paid 20/hr employee for working with new MTs
x
It's good for testing. Kind of clunky for working

Does anyone have any good, realistic advice for working on 60 different accounts!?...(exaggeration)

but I am really getting frustrated.  I left a company who bumped me off my ERs (which I did for over a year and were my 'bread-and-butter', and the more I complained or asked about it, the worst dictation I got, etc.  This was a change of management in which that company went down-hill fast, anyway, as far as the treatment of MTs.

so I left, and now at the 'new' company I am still doing 5, 6 accounts.  Forget ERs, I am told.

the question is, I am working on so many accounts, and even accounts with different management, different QA.  I am embarrassed to mention I just did a report using the SPECS FROM THE WRONG ACCOUNT.  Luckily, I had sent the report to QA, but I get a note from the QA like 'read the specs' (stupid) is how it sounded.  Yeah, I did, but for the wrong account.

these companies do not see how making people work on so many accounts is going to be huge negative for them in the long-run.  they risk mistakes like this, not me.

how does one keep it all straight, and why do we have to?  the only people who are having success, are people who will take any kind of abuse, it seems, and are just making the best of it.  does that mean only the aggressive will survive in this business? this gets more ridiculous all the time.

not to mention, pay and money - LIVELIHOOD - severely diminishes the second week of pay-week.  anyone else notice that?  first week I am flying on the primary, second week in I am like getting scraps, working on 4, 5,6 accounts - there goes all I worked for in the first week.

so these ladies typing 300+ lines/hour and making $50 thou a year, like so many boast on here, how, where, when ????  I am not getting it, and I am a 99-100% quality MT, working 35 hours/week.  every company I have worked with, my paycheck is totally dependent on the manager, period.

If it rains hard, the wind blows hard and there are trees
nearby, it snows heavily it will mess up the signal.  The speed is not constant, sometimes as slow as dial-up, but at least still connected.  Many companies will not allow satellite.
crap
I agree.
Why do the MTSOs not DARE to tell the crappy dictators that their dictations are crap? Some doctors do not maintain their equipment functioning properly, then the sound quality is aweful.
MTSOs are afraid to lose the client if they complain about this.
And the MTs have to suffer through this all.

Yes, that me.....have way to much crap happening....
x
THANK YOU!! As QA I run into the same crap. Like they do not care...
The whole verbatum thing..they go a LITTLE far. There is still room to make it correct.
yes my spelling has gone to crap sorry
so much for proof reading.. I am sure to be bashed for that
What a load of crap!!!!....nm
nm
crap money
New transcriptionists are not given the opportunities that are available to experienced transcriptionists. Even though it is crap money it is the only way we can get our foot in the door to gain the experience we need to even be considered for higher paying positions. I, personally suffer with low pain just to gain EXPERIENCE.
offshore crap

HOLY CRAP!!!! Here's what I'd do:
1. Get a hotel room.

2. CALL ANIMAL CONTROL!!!!
