to type and are very difficult as it is hard to hear with background noise, different speakers, usually no macros, etc. I think they are worth more pay, not less. I also get paid by the word at 0.008 and had figured mine to be about 0.09/line as well in the past. stick with where you are.

Easy free alternative to FTP for uploading lots of files?
I currently have a temp account that wants to send me a large # of files. I have tried to set them up with a free FTP utility but she is having trouble using it. For some reason she can receive files from me fine but cannot upload them from her computer, and I am stumped as to why this would be. So I am wondering if there is an alternative out there to FTP that is both easy and free (or low-cost). She's willing to FedEx them to me on CD if all else fails but any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks.
Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
That means that medical files will be in computer
Information technology jobs are the ones that create, build & maintain the systems and networks we all work on.

Undoubtedly, a conversion from hard-copy medical files to electronic ones would entail a certain amount of data-entry for records to be transferred.

But whether the actual record is on a hard-copy chart or an EMR, if the info is dictated into a microphone, somebody's got to turn the doctor's mumbled, gum-chewing gibberish into meaningful, legible and legal medical documentation.
She's right. It is not as hard as medical reports
Just like people who type for insurance companies, they also think they are qualified to be an MT - NOT.  Social work reports, although probably a lot more interesting, are nothing like typing medical records.
It sounds like your settings are off for the type of files sm
you are playing. Have you played with the special audio processes under the file tab? Check your playback tab settings, the sound device, check your vox/raw settings. What type files are they? You could also check and make sure your default sound didn't get changed to something like that. Sounds like maybe an equalizer on. I have an equalizer and can select it to sound that way. Did you rule out the headphones? Lastly, if none of the above work, can you do a restore on your computer to before you downloaded the new test files and see if that fixes it?
Please don't type in all caps, hard

to read and is considered screaming on the net.

I can barely type I'm laughing so hard
Yes, you are going to get slammed for saying some of that stuff, but it is Hilarry-ious!!! And, oh so true. Oh, my side hurts!
So what do you do to keep motivated to type during the work day? Sometimes I find it so hard to...

stay focused.  When you're working at home it is soooo easy to turn on the TV, take frequent breaks to answer the phone, talk to hubbie, play with the kids, take a hot bath, play solitaire on the PC, surf the net, post on a message board, etc.

I just wondered if anyone had any miracle cure for the wandering mind?

Make sure you have selected Medical as your speller type.

Been around the block lots of time but tell me
what is padding? I have worked in this field for over 30 years now. I have very good speed and regular typing I could do at least 2000 per day. Now with VR and straight combined I do about 3200 per day. My audio will not go that fast in order for me or anyone to do 1000 per hour. The most I have done in an hour (without having to slow the machine down, listening only) was about 600. It cannot be done with my audio system, totally impossible as fast as you can set it.
I seriously doubt that type of work is as complex as medical reports.

sorry you are having such a hard time...
but I honestly do not know what you mean. may I ask who are you talking about.

at some point, people have to stand up for themselves, that is, in my opinion, what
"this country is based upon." thank heavens some people felt they were worth more than just working for the government, and left to start a new life here.

if you are upset about the postings regarding MT profession disintegrating, then I disagree with you.

we do perform a very important service, one that helps our 'fellow man' every single day, in the over-50 reports we probably transcribe each and every day while people wait to have surgeries or need emergency care.

we are typing those reports to create a legal document with our names attached to them as well.

this is not "pissing and moaning" but active dialogue with the hopes something good can come out of it. sorry you feel that way, and I am sincerely sorry you are being touched by those problems because of a natural disaster...
Thanks, b/c 5 files at a time wouldn't work for me. nm

That doesn't make sense to me.  Just because you transcribe a report, that doesn't make you the only person who knows about it or even a significant person in the whole process.
Thanks for your input. We type regular medical reports in Meditech and radiology in Cerner. SM

I am really considering presenting the idea that we measure productivity on minutes transcribed instead of lines.  I don't know if management will go for it, but it seems like the best scenario considering all the trouble we've had.

Thanks again!

I have a hard time believing your overhead
I think you should consider selling your clients to an American-based company and go back to MT'ing.  It doesn't sound like you can handle the pressure of being a business owner.  I am an IC that makes 10 cpl and my MTSO owner does not mind at all that she is only making 3 cpl off of my 10 cpl, but she does not have to QA my work or do really much of anything, and she's clearing 3 cpl on my 10.  Now, if you have complaining MT's, then you need to be more strict about TAT and QA.  They should not require you to QA once they've become familiar with the dictations.  Also, you need to find a way to also provide 24-hour turnaround.  The problem here is that you are only willing to pay 7-8 cpl.  I'm still baffled as to the cost of your overhead?  Most physicians supply paper, their own dictation equipment.  FTP sites do not cost that much.  Lot of eyebrown raising ???'s here, that I don't think you are being forthcoming.  JMO.  Good luck!
A little hard and time consuming to figure out
If you do 300 lines per hour of 65 characters with spaces, no bolds, no caps, etc.then that would be at an average of ten words per line, 12 courier font - 1 inch margins, and so that would be 3000 words per hour divided by 60 which is only 50 words per minute.  Your speed on transcription is different than regular typing as you have to account for stopping, listening, correcting, etc.  For reqular typing speed I would double what your transcription speed is.   I would tell them what my average transcribed line count is and tell them to figure out how that turns into words per minute.
The hard time was the past thing.
Hi, I have just joined Spheris Hyderabad. Two months for settling down is what they give you and after that it is your regular type-type-type. There are nooooooooo problems with this new Spheris Clarity (R) platform. With this, things are just moving smooooooooothly.
It's hard so that you'll fail the first time and
Tell your employer that the money you give to AAMT/ADHI for the 'privilege' of taking their test is funding the progressive offshoring of the American MT profession. If you've been an MT for nearly 30 years, you don't need a CMT after your name. You were a professional MT long before that bunch of con artists dreamed up that scheme to make themselves rich by making MTs think they were on their side. Now we all know better. Don't fund their offshoring scam!
If you like to type (fast), are fascinated by medical field, enjoy working solo, you will be fine.
You may have to go through three jobs (over several years) to get to the big money. Best to chose a specialty which you find intriguing and tends to pay well (surgery, radiology perhaps).
Have to disable Norton Internet Sec & Del all Temp files every time, why???
I cannot get the links to stay but I know it has to be due to something in Norton because if I disable Norton Internet Security and then go to Tools, Internet Options, choose General tab, then Temporary Files, Delete Files, Delete all off line content, and hit okay, then I get them back, but they don't stay consistently. :(

Can anyone tell me what needs to be changed/added in Norton's Internet Security to keep the links/forums available in the blue/on the left side??? I have tried everything I can think of. I sure would appreciate your help.

TIA.
Doc trying to go digital and having a heck of a time/can't open files. Please see message.
I am working with a doctor's office who has an Olympus recorder (I think it's the W-10).  She has been trying to send me a sound file.  She sent a sound file that was left in the recorder from about a year ago to see if it would work and it opened up just fine for me with my transcription player (Philips Executive SpeechMike kit).

Since that time, she has tried to send many more test dictations that she just recorded herself to try and I am unable to open up any of them.  She says that when she downloads the sound file from the recorder to her computer it is a WAV file, but as soon as she tries to email it to me, it changes to a VAL file extension.

This is quite frustrating for both of us and I am trying to find any reason at all that this is not working (since it did work on the first dictation that someone else had recorded previously but won't work since on anything else).  This makes me think it might be something she is doing while recording?  Is anyone able to tell me anything she might be doing wrong that might be causing this problem?  Or any suggestions on anything else we can do?

I did download the voice software that came with her recorder.  I am able to play the files there, but not on my Philips transcription player, which I need to do to transcribe the files.  As I said before, the first file she sent did play on my transcription player, but none of the files she sent since then will work.  I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions you might have at all.   Thank you.

Restore to a previous date. Backup files next time.

I must say, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time
The above "Frank" conversation is a classic..  You guys have made my year with this one. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo FUNNY!  You two are in the wrong line of business.  Thanks for making my day.  I laughed 'til my stomach hurt.
I loved my account with Spheris, but had a hard time
punching in and out.  I worked originally for Healthscribe and then they merged with Spheris.  Things didn't change for quite a while and then all of a sudden things took a crappy turn for the worse.  I ended up with at least 5 accounts that I was in daily.  I went from having to punch in and out and being required to work full time hours to stay a full time employee even though I could get my work done in part time hours.  I didn't stick around and after 2 years with Healthscribe I left shortly after the merge was starting to take shape.  Like I said, the biggest problem was punching in and out.  Good luck.
I had a really hard time with a pastor who preached on marriage
when I knew this was not his first marriage. I couldn't stand it. All the things he said applies to us, but what about his first wife? Where does she fit in? Too confusing for me.
Waste of time and hard-earned money
when you can only make may be 1 cpl more if you are a CMT.  They should not charge you, they should just let you take the test and send you the certificate.
Just slang for girls, from a long time ago. Lots of them.. Dish, Broad, Chick...

I disagree, first off, I have a heck of a hard time hiring qualified US MTs
client ready work.  Then, when I do hire MTs I constantly run into the problem of how they only want to work part time or can only work 2 hrs on this day, an hour here, or an hour there, or the next problem is consistency.  Out of the blue, oops, can't work today, or I lost connection to the Internet yet they're too stupid to go offline instant messenger.  One MT owes me money because I was nice enough to help her out (yeah I know my fault) and she screwed me over.  Such drama.  It's a CONSTANT battle to find good US MTs.
Goes both ways. I have a hard time with tenses when speaking Spanish. :)

ROTFLMAO. STOP!!! I haven't laughed this hard for a long time.
Can you imagine 10,000 MQMTs just wanting to show Frank a personal touch?  He will be one tired guy.
I spent about a month in India and they do speak English but sometimes I had a hard time
understanding the way they pronounced the words so I would ask them to spell it.
Time to type

Where I work it is now 3 minutes of typing for 1 minute of dictation.  Will change soon to the AAMT rules (according to our supervisor) which is now 4 minutes for typing for 1 minute of dictation.

Speaking of down-time, what type of dog does
I am the proud mom of a 6 yr old Sheltand Sheep dog!
Second time around I married somewhat of a dad type. :)

My dad was the kindest, sweetest most patient man that was ever put on Earth. He also was very, very funny.

My first husband was totally opposite, mean, short tempered and had no sense of humor. I spent nearly a decade trying to figure out why he wasn't like my dad as that was my perception of men.

Second time around I came pretty darn close. Maybe not quite as patient, but nice to me and very funny. He bought me a half dozen roses today when I told him I didn't want a thing but for someone to do my dishes.  Well guess what?  Yup! He did the dishes too!

My mom always used to say, "The problem with you girls is you keep looking for your father and they only made one and he picked me."

Time it takes to type...
Approximately how long does it take to type, say, 5 minutes of dictation?  Or 10, or whatever?  Just trying to get a feel for if I'm in the ballpark.  Thanks!
