Doc trying to go digital and having a heck of a time/can't open files. Please see message.

I am working with a doctor's office who has an Olympus recorder (I think it's the W-10).  She has been trying to send me a sound file.  She sent a sound file that was left in the recorder from about a year ago to see if it would work and it opened up just fine for me with my transcription player (Philips Executive SpeechMike kit).

Since that time, she has tried to send many more test dictations that she just recorded herself to try and I am unable to open up any of them.  She says that when she downloads the sound file from the recorder to her computer it is a WAV file, but as soon as she tries to email it to me, it changes to a VAL file extension.

This is quite frustrating for both of us and I am trying to find any reason at all that this is not working (since it did work on the first dictation that someone else had recorded previously but won't work since on anything else).  This makes me think it might be something she is doing while recording?  Is anyone able to tell me anything she might be doing wrong that might be causing this problem?  Or any suggestions on anything else we can do?

I did download the voice software that came with her recorder.  I am able to play the files there, but not on my Philips transcription player, which I need to do to transcribe the files.  As I said before, the first file she sent did play on my transcription player, but none of the files she sent since then will work.  I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions you might have at all.   Thank you.

Converting voice files to digital files

I have a Voice Solutions dictation system that will happily convert DS4000 voice files to digital when they are downloaded (wave files). However, it will not recognize any other files for conversion. I had a physician download .WAM files from his DS-30 and my dictation system would not convert it. Anyone have any suggestions?  I would greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks!!!

Help! Bought Stedman's new Spellchecker and can't open ZIP files!

I emailed Stedman's numerous times and their Tech email addy bounces back.  I have called 3 times and left messages!!  I work at home for my hospital and haven't gotten a Call from them.  The new Spellchecker was downloaded and I should have bought the CD!!  Because it was downloaded I can't get my money back!

Can anyone email me instructions on how to find these files (says I'm missing the exe file and won't run) and get it installed.  I'm really getting disappointed in Stedman's.  Their reference Books are great but customer service is the Pitts!!

I use DVI and I download digital files via FTP

and then transcribe using a foot pedal connected to my computer.  There is also a transcribe station similar to a C-phone that can be used to access the system directly.

Ask the company what equipment you'll use and then if they don't answer your questions google DVI.

I only accept digital files.
I don't have time to courier tapes. I use Express Scribe to play back files. Doc upload to a commercial, secure website. Completed documents are uploaded to the same website to be downloaded by the docs. (I pay $30/month for this.) No software/licenses for the docs to buy but they do provide their own digital recorders, which I have found to work best since they take better care of things they have to pay for.

There are several websites available that offer FTP stores space (some FTP knowledge is required by the office staff) as well as other sites that allow for "drop and drag" upload/downloads. Some bill a flat fee per month, some bill according to the bandwidth used.
What is the best player for digital files?
I have used Express Scribe for years but ever since I restored my computer it will not play .dss files any more.  I have downloaded every codec out there, etc.  I have Gearplayer also but cannot stand it.  What does everyone else use? Thanks
playing digital files
I use Start/Stop.
ESP files are stored on the service in the "Bin" folder. You should be able to open up an EXT

document and bring up your ESP window.  Click files and their should be a "Load" option.  Then you can search the server for your ESP file and you'll find it in the "Bin" folder.

I also agree, that you should back up your ESP file on a disk or jump drive.  I back up about once a month.

Question about digital sound files

Hi everyone,

I am totally new to medical transcription and have a question. In doing transcription digitally, what are the most common sound file formats? I am about to take a test (both written & verbal) for a company and they sent me my test files as .wav files. The files are hard to understand at best  (the guy sounds like he's talking into a tin can ) and I am wondering why they didn't send them to me in a clearer form such as MP3. I am about to ask this same question to the person sending me the test but I thought I'd ask it here too. Is the .wav format the most common form of sound file for MT's? And if so, what's the best program to listen to these files in? I have Windows Media player, Real Player and WinAmp on my computer. Are there programs that MT's use to better hear these files? I hate to sound like a total dummy here but I'm new to this and when I went to school several years ago for MT, we only did tapes--not digital! If anyone can give me some info here, I'd really appreciate it!

Best,

RT

Recommendatios for a TASP for digital files
I am thinking about getting my own clients and have only been able to Google 3 TASPs. DocShuttle, Medikin, and idigital. Are there others?
Open Message for ALL MTs - sm

Happy Medical Transciptionist Week to each and eveyone of you.  Your dedication to your profession is, in my opinion, admirable.  I wish I could do what you do.  The knowledge you carry with you each day, the amount of patience and attention to every detail is beyond belief.  I cannot imagine getting up out of bed every day and doing what you do each and every time you sit before your PC.  I am a mere radiology/Diagnostic Imaging MT.  They tried to cross-train me for discharge summaries, clinic notes, psychiatric notes, etc....and I almost went out of my mind.  I have nothing but the utmost respect for you all and for all you do and know how to do.  I just wanted to say this to you during MT week, and wish you all the best.  My hat is truly off to all of you.  You all deserve to take a bow!!

Sincerely.....

Thank you so much. After having a very frustrating day with my acute care job, it is so nice to hear that. Please don't discount yourself. I also started in radiology. I then went to a medical group and three years later went to acute care. It has been three years since starting acute care. I thought I would never get it, but I worked hard and am hanging in there doing a more than fair job.
My digital voice player converts files to be --sm
able to be played. it sounds like your voice player does not. Maybe either you or she needs to save the file as a wav file first, prior to playing. either that, or try downloading the express scribe player, which is free, and try to play it with that. If that plays, then it is your voice player which is not compatible with the files she is sending you. good luck.
Looking for Software to Organize Digital Voice Files

Anyone know of good software that can take my digital voice files and organize them so I can keep track of which worker is working on which doctor, keep an eye on turnaround time, etc. -- instead of making endless folders on the computer myself. Voice files are separate from the typed reports, which are done in Word. Thank you.

Conversion program for digital sound files - sm

A long time ago I saw a listing regarding a program that would convert sound files, ex. dss to wav; etc.  I need to convert a .dvf file to .wav.  Any ideas?

Any way to transfer microcasettes to digital voice files? (sm)

I'll be using a subcontractor and rather than picking up and delivering tapes, is there a way for me to transfer dictation from tapes to voice files that she can transcribe using express scribe?

Do they make such a machine?

yes, open notepad (see message)
If you have a list of addresses already, you can add a couple of "markers" to your list and then convert using the Run File Converter in Shorthand.

If your addresses are on separate lines like this

Jane Doe
123 Sesame Street
New York, NY 00001

you will need to set it up like this:

"janedoe", "Jane Doe
123 Sesame Street
New York, NY 00001"

Notice the name you'd like to use as the Expander is in quotes, followed by a comma, not a comma inside the quotes. Then, the actual expansion is in quotes and also appears on separate lines, and ends with quotes. When you run the Run File Converter option in Shorthand, chose option #5, text format: "keyword", "text" option and go from there.

If anyone else has a better, easier, or quicker way, I'd love to know!

You can also start the Run File Converter and chose "help" for options to see if you fit into another "option."

HTH!
I am looking for recommendations for a FTP site to retrieve digital voice files. sm
Can you tell me what site you use, how much it costs, etc.? Any info appreciated!
You know, I have a heck of a time understanding sm
music lyrics to rock songs or anything that has loud instrumentals playing with the vocals. Go figure.

I currently type for a doctor who dictates with a digital handheld and sends the files via e-mail fo
and wanted to be able to call me with his dictations.  What would be the best and cheapest way for me to go so that he can do his dictations without the handheld unit??  I don't want to invest in a lot because he does not forget very often.  This is the first time in three months.  Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
I disagree, first off, I have a heck of a hard time hiring qualified US MTs
client ready work.  Then, when I do hire MTs I constantly run into the problem of how they only want to work part time or can only work 2 hrs on this day, an hour here, or an hour there, or the next problem is consistency.  Out of the blue, oops, can't work today, or I lost connection to the Internet yet they're too stupid to go offline instant messenger.  One MT owes me money because I was nice enough to help her out (yeah I know my fault) and she screwed me over.  Such drama.  It's a CONSTANT battle to find good US MTs.
I've had 3 at one time, but only one open at a time. nm

Who in the heck spends time chitter chattering w/ office staff?
I deliver and it's not daily but every other day and I definitely do NOT disrupt workflow and I do not chitter chatter with the office staff. In fact, most times I go in at night when the staff is gone because I have a key. It's clear that your perception and reality are two completely different things.

Lifelong friendship -- that's a good one! Where in the world did you come up with the idea that MTs would want to be lifelong friends with the office staff?!? I work at home to avoid all that office politics crap and gossip. Why would I want to pop in daily to listen to that junk? LOL

Seriously -- I hope people don't actually take all your advice because you don't even address the important issues. You only want to try to make everyone feel smaller and less important than you feel you are.

If Ihave both programs open at the same time
and 2 jobs open at the same time - I get both voices when pushing the foot pedal..... so I just close one
Yes, as stated, as long as only one open at a time.
the companies are using different versions of Extext, and in that case, you'd have to go through an upgrade when opening Extext for the different companies.
Do you think pc attacks only occur at night? They are looking for open pc all the time.
:P
I am open tomorrow night ......just post a time!

You can only have one Outlook Express open and downloading emails at a time. If have both the SM

laptop and the PC trying to download email for the same address, you are going to have one downloading some and the other downloading whatever comes in after the first computer downloads, make sense?  That's why you are only getting part of your email on one and part on the other.  You have two different machines trying to download the same emails.

If you set both Outlook Express programs set up the exact same way on each computer, then both will work, but not at the same time.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, b/c 5 files at a time wouldn't work for me. nm

Start Stop digital player has a time stamp feature..sm...

I'm not sure if it puts it in Word or what it does.  I've never needed it.

I think a program that would pull header information from Word and add it to a log file might be needed by quite a few MTs.  I don't know if that's feasible since everyone's needs would be different.  A lot of MTs like to keep logs though, myself included.

If I think of anything else I'll be back.

Have to disable Norton Internet Sec & Del all Temp files every time, why???
I cannot get the links to stay but I know it has to be due to something in Norton because if I disable Norton Internet Security and then go to Tools, Internet Options, choose General tab, then Temporary Files, Delete Files, Delete all off line content, and hit okay, then I get them back, but they don't stay consistently. :(

Can anyone tell me what needs to be changed/added in Norton's Internet Security to keep the links/forums available in the blue/on the left side??? I have tried everything I can think of. I sure would appreciate your help.

TIA.
Restore to a previous date. Backup files next time.

I would not; most of the time those type files, although not usually hard medical terms, take lots l
to type and are very difficult as it is hard to hear with background noise, different speakers, usually no macros, etc. I think they are worth more pay, not less. I also get paid by the word at 0.008 and had figured mine to be about 0.09/line as well in the past. stick with where you are.
BRAVO!! It's about time they got the message that
Good, good, good!
You can't just open the attachment. You need to save it to a file and then open SM
your wave player and load it.
This message is defining what VBC is! It's time people realize the American MTs...
are our own worst enemies.  VBC is NOT a good thing!  I personally think we should get paid per keystroke.
The FUNNY thing is that in the amount of time it takes for them to post a message

I do tapes and digital. And I was told if I'm not logged into the digital system, they assume I&

BUT she wants me logged into the system by 9:30 a.m.  So I'm confused too.  I've decided that I may come back to her and just say I'm not going to do the tapes anymore.  I hate the tapes anyway.  The voice quality is horrible, it fades in and out.  It takes me twice as long to transcribe their tapes than the digital.

Filezilla is the software used to transfer files to an FTP server where the files "reside".
.
How do I get it ST to open when escription is open?

Did you save files in .rtf format? The files need to be
as a Word document or it won't count them. Could be the problem.
Venting-why do people keep putting nm and THEN writing a message?? nm means no message - sm
Please put sm if you have a message and NM if there is no message other than your subject line.  It makes it easier when reading these messages.  thanks so much and have a nice day everyone.
Most companies do no use their only files (HIPAA). They use files provided by other companies, serv
If you can get through the test files, then the sound quality on the actual company files is better. And, the dictation is never as bad as the test files, plus you have QA to help with hard blanks.
Oh, heck, YES!!!

It's always feast or famine around here.  One week, I'll be sitting on my thumbs stressing about bills and not enough work.  The next week, everyone dumps so much on me that I'm working double shifts.  Why can't it be regular instead of sporadic?  Then again, I do rather like those unexpected days off and not being chained to a desk during certain hours like with the nationals.  I work when I want to as long as I meet TAT.

Do you really want to work 10-12 hours a day?  And you know that some days it will be 6 hours and some days 18 hours because it is truly feast or famine.  I took on a third IC job recently because things were so slow for weeks with my other two.  The other two must have heard me accept the third job because I got dumped on.  I wound up wigging out and quitting the third position.  I feel really bad about leaving her in the lurch, but holy cow! A human body can only take so much of this.

I don't see the little sleep deprived icon with cramped up fingers and pedal foot.  Owie.  I'm just not going to gripe about not getting much sleep or time off.  Work is good.  Being unemployed is bad.

Do the local docs pay more than the national?  And their workload is a lot easier, too.  You get the same dictators every day saying the same things over and over again so you can use your word expander to the max.  Make a list of pros and cons and see which is better.

How the heck did you get that?
Interpretation of my post: I like ESLs not for any other reason other than I LIKE ESLs. Whatever impact that has on those who can't or won't do them is not MY problem.

Oh so thankful to have a job? Sounds to me like you are the one who should be thankful to have a job considering you have a hang-up about doing a majority of what our job description is.
What the heck is CMT?

No way in heck!
Everytime I scroll through the channels and I even see that show for 1 second, I feel like getting a hammer and hitting the wall with it repeatedly. Those women are gross!
What the heck are you looking for?

Most women I know that think men are scum continue to end up with the same type.

It's usually a self-esteem issue on the woman's part which harbors lack of trust and very high expectations concerning the opposite sex.

You need to lower your expectations and give to others as much as you would expect to be given to you.

Only then will you realize that not "all" men are scum, just possibly the ones that you choose to hook up with.

Heck no!

I mean, like really, why in the world should you let your clients know that you're going to be out of town for a couple of weeks??!!

Why, let em' wonder where you are and why their work's not being done.  I can't think of a better way to do business, get lots of referrals, and build a solid bond of trust!

Heck no, 41's not too old
Honey, 41 is NOT OLD...OK! Go for it...you'll do GREAT!!! Best of luck to ya...and I envy you...I wanna do that too, so bad.  I might...when I get 41!!!
Me too, then got the heck out of there. (sm)

I thougth for sure I was going to have my computer light up, start erasing data, or something.
