Listen/read/proof and then upload

In Reply to: Question for VR users... - MT

I don't do VR right now, but when I did I would only go through it once.  Only on a very long one would I ever go back through it again and only if I had a problem would I listen to the whole thing again.  I started out doing that and realized I was never going to make above $4 an hour if I kept that up.

I proof as I go, but re-listen to difficult reports.
x
and you proof read IMs too
!!!
Proof while I read that's it. The majority of the sm
nationals look at quantity not quality. If you don't get 1200 lines minimum a day there are issues. A person can type 2000 lines a day with a0 lot of errors and QA just pick a few reports with 1 error they have 98 or 99% accuracy.
Should have proof read, stretching over one keyboard
to type on another.
I proof as I go. I read my words and sentences as I go....SM
Never received anything less than a 99% on my regular QA reviews and usually have a 99.8, 99.9, or 100%.
Good thing I proof read LOL
I was just proofreading my reports before I send it and instead of typing that the lady hit her head on a window, I typed she hit her head on a widow.  Ha Ha.  I thought to myself - hope they weren't on the way to the funeral.  Okay, having way too much fun here.
You proof read signs and get irritated when there are mistakes.

You charge your kids to proof read their homework.
:}
You never listen or read completely -- just speak

If you are so good in math then you know that in doing a 40 line report counting gross lines with 90 characters per line, that if you were to divide by 65 you would have 9 more lines than the gross count -- right?   It sometimes does average out. But then I know that you were confident in what you are saying -- "a gross line is a gross line, one character or 90".

POLL - Do you proof as you go or proof when finished? sm

I proof after, but would love to proof during.  I'm working on it.  I'm curious as to what percentage of MTs proof as they go or proof at the end?

Thx for responding.

MT, proof as I go. ME, go back and proof afterwards
I have only been editing 3-4 months, and I find I make at least twice the stupid mistakes on ME as with MT, so I do scan the ME reports --find double periods, caps where they are not supposed to be -- stupid stuff.

good luck!
upload/download...
i know nothing about wireless -- but with DSL mine were taking only about 15 seconds when i signed on. Then i got a replacement machine and it was back to about 5 min to do the initial upload. Tech support said there were problems with the new DQS version, so my replacement machine was reverted to old version. Don't know if any of this is helpful, but that's all i can offer...
I think if the FTP is "secure" you just upload using either their -sm
website using IE or using an FTP transfer program. I am actually looking into this myself right now. Was thinking about Metroscript but they charge way too much, $15 a month + .34/mb uploaded to the site. It would cost me a min. of $135 a month to use it. So I am looking into those that offer secure FTP but with no fees other than the monthly usage flat fee. I have no idea about cable, I use dial up (no cable or DSL here). As for inspectors, I highly doubt that will ever happen.
Not by email. You have to upload sm
to another site, zip the filed and send.  Try sendthisfile.com
Satellite upload speed is not much (sm)
better than dial-up. A lot of companies don't allow it because their own crappy platforms will time out waiting for your upload. You just need to look for companies that don't use a platform. Keep looking! There's some MTSO out there looking for you!
Cool! Try photobucket.com to upload them to
xx
I have mine all upload from a folder on my PC.
I just go and periodically clean out that folder.
upload voice file
A good way to upload a voice file is to send it by FTP to an in-house computer. This keeps it off email and the web.

How long does it take for you to download/upload jobs?
I am wondering if I have a slow connection or if it is DocQScribe uploading/downloading jobs too slow.  I have wireless internet because it is the only service available in my area besides dial up.  Would love to hear some feedback on this.  Thanks
Just keep in mind that you have to have software to upload the files to you.

Cheap handheld units sold on ebay do not offer that.  Those mentioned are older models and do not have the software to upload to FTP.  No offense to the last poster, but the handheld units that do have software to upload to FTP are newer models and cost more.

You're also taking your chances buying on ebay, so OP, whatever you decide to do, make sure to only buy from Powersellers or sellers with no less than a 98 rating.

I used satellite with 2 different platforms and the download and upload speeds were just
that satellite was just a 'step up' from dialup, but it was WAAAAY faster and very comparable to the cable and DSL I previously had. I had more down time with both of those because the companies do not want to spend the money to repair connections and lines running to the individual homes (this from a Bellsouth tech after his 8th visit to my house). Plus, living here in Florida, I was able to work last year during and after swipes by 4 hurricanes. Our phones were out for 2 weeks and cable was out all over town for even longer. Just plugged my surge protector into the generator and off to work I went. Give me my satellite any day! Thank you so much for your encouragement! Right now I guess I'll just ride my horse for a couple hours. We are surrounded by federal preserve land. There are miles and miles of trails with old plantation ruins. Very relaxing. In spite of not working, I do love my life!!!!
Another question - are you able to stay under the upload/download threshold? nm
nm
I agree! They're looking for you to upload to a network drive,
which is totally not your responsibility to provide for them. If they don't want to install a network and dedicated drive, they can turn on their file sharing but allow ONE computer to be the master computer. All other computers would have access to the shared folder on the "main" computer. However, they would HAVE to be sure they uploaded the files again to the main drive after making changes.

As for the search feature, they've already got that built into Windows. Start Menu, Search for Documents, Advanced Search options, "A word or phrase contained in the document," type the patient's name into the box, and specify which drive to search on. Hit OK and voila!
There is an upload hanheld icon on the tool bar of the Olympus software.
from the unit to the computer, then the file can be dragged and dropped.  Good luck!
Under tools/options, you can have it upload the files once the recorder is detected. I ...

have all of my accounts set up this way.  It makes it much easier and all the doc has to do is plug in the recorder.  I use DocShuttle with Olympus DS-2300 recorders.

Hope this helps.

Core is software to upload and downloads. It's not a hosting site.

if you purchase bytescribe/docshuttle, you can actually upload the completed work back on there. nm

In 12 years of MT'ing I've never re-read an entire chart. Edit/read as I type. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

****

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

I proof after - sm

I finish typing...every line of every single report that leaves my desktop.  I may find a typo (and, of, or, etc.) rarely, but I still proofread.  It's just something that I do .

I proof after.

I proof after

Depending on the report/dictator I can proof during... but I find I catch things better when I proof after. One day I will have the proof during mastered.

Proof as I go, always have...
x
Proof as you go DEFINITELY
I was trained to never pass over a word or something in question just to finish the report - you will invaribly miss or forget about it if you skip over it for a "final proof."

Have been an Editor for years and I am amazed at what even seasoned MTs will miss because they figured they would "fix" something when the report was finished. And, yes, your spell check or grammar check is never going to catch the difference between perineal and peroneal, etc.
Proof, of course.

Always have. Never proof again. sm
If I catch something other than spellcheck catches, I change. Otherwise, off it goes. Never, ever proof the entire report again.
No Proof
There is absolutely no proof.  The Labor Board DENIED her request as I have been in contact with them.  This is an ALLEGATION.  The Labor Board does NOT  handle Indendent Contractor situations.  The paperwork sent in by Doris Latta in reference to Lynn Jester of Jester's Touch was FRAUD.  It has been dismissed!  If you wish to continue to let just anyone post items about MT Services without PROOF, that's fine with me.  I care not!   The litigation is between Jester's Touch attorney and Doris Latta at this point so I am not concerned because I am very fair and good to all ICs that have and do work with me.
I proof as I go and sm

There was a time when I really did have to proof each and every word.  Last time I had an audit, it was better than 99% which is quite good enough.

There is a way to learn to do this and I can't really tell you want it is I do or how I do it exactly.  I have pretty high production (1500 to 1800 lines a day) and few mistakes.  I think it is just finding a flow because I have my off days when I have a lot of difficulty.

I proof as I go along
I have so many macros and templates, and because I only do H&P I bascially type the same things all the time for each specific doctor.
if you use playback and proof at the
same time that this feature would not be of benefit to you. Oh well, thanks for being honest.
There is proof in the statistics
Not long ago there was an article in Advance magazine about salaries.  CMTs do make an average of, I believe it was, 20% more than a non-CMT.  That's proof enough for me.
I proof as I transcribe, unless (sm)
I have a blank or blanks.  Then I listen to the whole report.
Been doing this 20 plus years and still proof after
always catch a typo or two and am glad I took the time to proof. Just can't seem to catch them all when I proof during transcription.
I'm so good, I don't have to proof....HA! HA!
I proof while I'm typing unless I'm doing a very difficult dictaotor.
Proof as I go, was taught this way! nm
xx
Send him proof

When this happens to me, I go to several reliable sources and make sure that (1) I *am* spelling it correctly and there are not any alternative correct spellings and (2) that I have a source any doctor would not be able to argue about. I then type a polite note to the doctor and send it along with my proof. In my note, I include the comment that if he has found it spelled another way in a reliable reference, I'd be glad if he would let me know what reference that was, for my own information.  Once, for the name of a medical device, I went to the manufacturer's web page and printed the page describing the device and showing the spelling.  Along with my polite note, I faxed the web page to the doc.  The next dictation I got from him, he was very nice and apologetic and thanked me for being thorough! The worst that has happened is that I didn't hear anything back from a doc, but that's fine, too.  In the unlikely event that the doc STILL wants it spelled incorrectly (which has never happened to me, but it's possible) I would have him put it in writing that he wants it spelled that way.

You ought to proof your own posts, because
You said then, and it really should be them.  You should really practice what you preach, as your error jumped right out at me.
Proof reading
I have never heard of that either. I go over/listen to each report I type twice. QA is only there if I get stuck or have blanks.
