No, they aren't. I made $10 an hour working

Posted By: Don't think so on 2007-10-14
In Reply to: It's pure luck anymore, Steveo. The biggest bucks - are earned in an in-house position. nm IMHO

in-house plus measly production bonuses. I made $30-50 per hour working IC at home for a small MTSO.

I never said I made 10.00/hour...
I make well over that but not close to 75,000 that you think you deserve...but thanks...
Help! My fingers aren't working!
Have you ever had a day when your fingers just don't want to cooperate? I feel like they have a mind of their own this morning! I'm having to backspace every other word because they keep throwing a letter in there or typing them out of order!

Maybe they are trying to tell me to TAKE A BREAK! LOL

You aren't working in both versions.
That's why Word is working okay for you. If you want to work in both versions then the oldest one has to be installed first so the registry will know how to handle both.
I made $8.00 an hour with no benefits. But it was worth it.

Why was it worth it?

I spent 7 years in a law office (2 of them as a paralegal), moved, couldn't find anything legal and started getting assigned to medical offices through a temp agency.

If it weren't for that old battleax Family Practitioner and his IBM, not to mention his patience to teach me the stuff I had no clue about, I wouldn't be typing this in my pajamas.

Even if you only made 6 cents a line, that's 12.00 an hour at 200 lph.
c
Well, counted my lines for first hour and I made
602 at 4 cents = $24.00 for the hour. Not bad, huh?
My first month as an MT I was so slow I made about $2 an hour (sm)
And it was so hard, and so stressful I didn't think I would ever get it right. And I worked in an office with about 20 other MTs (this was about 10 years ago)so I had people to ask. Are you working at home on your first MT job? You need other MTs to be able to ask questions frequently. I had to have people listen all the time, probably for the first year I was a transcriptionist. If you are doing this on your own of course you are going to have a lot of blanks and a hard time. Just keep trying with this one if you can and see if things don't improve in a few weeks. It is hard to find someone to train you for your first MT job when you work at home. It is also hard to be the person doing the training, because it is very time-consuming and tedious and the person training is not making any money while they are correcting your errors. So for that you do need to be thankful, and just try to stick it out a little while and see if it all smooths out. Even for experienced MTs, the first month on a new job is always full of changes sent to you, corrections, etc., because they are proofing every word for a while. Best wishes to you :)
Today I got very lucky...made $50 in an hour with OP templates. nm

I made $17 an hour when I worked there. I also was promised a raise
but never saw it nor did I get an answer from mgmt when I asked.  I quit.  Most editors I know make between $15-$18 with MQ
If you are biusy working, then you aren't loving your child
like you should be either. I don't think you can judge all daycares. My daughter goes to a daycare and the only thing I can say they are guilty of is spoiling her to death. Her main sitter there has taught her to call her mama and then her first name because she loves her so much. The other has taught her to call her me-maw. They love her to death. They come to her birthday parties, they buy her gifts, no matter what time of day you pop in someone is loving on her, reading to her, playing a game with her...the things I can't do while I'm working.
Fingers aren't working yet.....your clothes detergent - -nm

You are hysterical Purple!! Made me laugh at this late hour!
Thanks, chick!
It was a $1 a mile, not hour! Made good noney back then. nm
x
By working an eight hour shift?

You made $90.00 in 3 hours working as a lifeguard? LOL!
Cute. What are you doing posting on this board. This isn't BayWatch, it's for MTs!!
made pennies working on-site-sm
but I live in an extremely rural area were the pay is generally lower across the board for any type of job.  I also drove an hour each work as well, to the next town over. Around years ago the transcriptionists in my hometown were making 7.50/hour.  So I am pretty proud of my 9 cpl job.
I made 21,000 last year working part time...
hoping when my youngest gets a bit older (she is 16 months) I can make a bit more...
to poster below who is talking about working an 8 hour shift

I just read your posts and they are really bothersome.  Why just because someone asks how to achieve 1000 lines in 3 or 4  hours would you flame them like that?  Why would you assume that person would want to work less than 8 hours just because they asked that question?

Most people, especially MTs, want to make the most of their time whether it be 3 hours or 8 hours.  Most MTs want to be productive since that is how we make our living.  Why wouldn't anyone with a brain want to increase their line count from 1000 lines in 8 hours to 2000 lines in 8 hours if they could?

I think it is a shame that so many get mad and become rude to others because they are doing more than them.  They are sharing their advice on how to become quicker and I wish that you would just let them do it for the rest of us!

I mean, if you want to work 8 hours and make squat go ahead.  The rest of us would like to bring in the cash and double our speed and work the same amount of time thank you!

Made 11-12 cents a line working for a service in 1989
sucks
Sickest thing, I made more money my first year as MT as I do now, for working
zz
Made 60K last year working 50 hours a week being paid on gross line
nm
I have 13 years experience and just started a hospital job working from home making $16 an hour

and with a really good incentive plan.  I live in the Kansas City area.  $10 seems like a low starting point even with only two years experience which is the usual benchmark for hospital MT jobs.

It's been my experience that the low end of the pay scale for hospital employed MTs was around $12 an hour.  Also, it's been my experience that the pay offered is usually based on years of experience and how well you perform on the transcription test.

I would say if their pay is that low, they should at least be making it up with incentive and it doesn't sound like they are.

Working 6/hour days, 5 days/week I make
$42,000.00, but the work is there to make more if I want to.  I'm in the southeast.
Depends on the pay and account. My lowest average is $15.52 an hour (roughly 182.6 lines an hour) w
;'
i made $15/hr before and didn't stay long because i made so much more on production. sm
that was with full benes too. i wouldn't do it for less than $20, but i think even with $20, i'd want benes. are you in-house?
1850 lines per 8 hour shift. 15.00 hour - no real requirement
x
if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.
I start an hour or 2 early and then take an hour or 2 for dinner -nm
x
At 200 lines a day for 6 cents, you are making $1.20 a day or 0.15 hour for an 8 hour day!!!--cm
Did you mean 2,000? Even then you would only be making $1.50 if you work 8 hours a day.
$32/hour? You said $36/hour on an earlier post. Either way would be great. n/m
xx

10 reports/hour or 25 markers/hour
NM
I don't know how it made such a small diff in your invoice... made a $100 diff in mine! (sm)

If it were only adding up to three bucks, I wouldn't sweat it. $100? Yeah, that's baseball registration for my son for this year. I am not giving tabs, returns, etc. away free when it adds up to that much difference!  Why should I charge less for a Return than I would for a"K"?

I appreciate your responses. I had an option of line vs hour ($14/hour) but if line pays more...nm
nm
You get more working the evening or night shifts and working w/o benefits. And producing like a mad
,
65 to 75 an hour comes to $15 an hour if u are fast
nm
Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping.  I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes.  I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this.  Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time.  But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course.  I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot.  My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon).  Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day.  I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change.  Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.
Working holidays? Out shopping in stores where someone IS working

that holiday you refuse to work?  Grocery stores, food joints & seems any store is open on holidays and you expect them to be fully staffed, so why shouldn't we?

Yes, I took off for the first time on Christmas day, in 18 years and it was great, but I worked Christmas eve and this whole past weekend.

Someone has to do it!

working IN A HOSPITAL is different than working at home.
Someone can steal you identity from the internet if they want to. Why would you go to the time and trouble to jeopardize a job that requires some level of skill to steal someone's identity or medical records? You could get a job as a retail clerk and get info easier than going through the testing required to become an MT.
Somehow working at home translates into not really working
My in-laws are the worst. Whenever they plan something last minute and my husband says that I had to work, they say, "but she works at home!". When I one time mentioned I had a "schedule" and basically punch a clock and work full time, I don't think they believed me. They will sometimes call mid-day during the week if they are in the area to see if I want to go for lunch, etc! The best is, my husband doesn't make all that much money, so where is it coming from, the money fairy? I am ready to strangle someone! So I know how you feel and I'm sorry it upset you. You are not alone.
See how much fun we can have? We aren't always mean!
A little fun with typos can turn into a whole new city!
Why aren't we all doing something?
I have only seen 2 or 3 people say they are happy with MQ on this board. If we are so unhappy, why can't we band together and be heard?
Some are and some aren't, just like here.
nm
others aren't.
;O
You aren't alone......... :(
nn
No you aren't the only one with those sm
problems. Sounds like you had an awfully bad day. I truly admire anyone who works at home with young children. I could never have done that when my 3 sons (nothing like the hit tv show way back when) were growing up. You name it, they did it. If one didn't think of it, the other one did, and the majority of the time, it wasn't good. I admire you for giving it your best shot. Hopefully, someone on this board can give you some suggestions that will help. Keep trying!
They Aren't the Only Ones

Technical support for just about anything is offshore now.  Call centers are worldwide.  I absolutely refuse to call and speak to someone I can't understand AND expect them to help me.  Dell actually has pretty clear-speaking ESLs and after "the job" is finished, they ask all kinds of questions about their English, knowledge, manner, etc...For once I was impressed.

When I was getting my phone line through Verizon, I had to speak with an ESL and it was a nightmare.  I get very cranky and short with them even though I don't mean to.  If I had the guts to do it, I would demand to speak to an American, but I can't bring myself to do that.

You aren't going to get 15 to 18 cpl.
profession if what you are getting paid isn't what you are worth.  I am staying here because I make more money doing MT than I could doing anything else.  I'm good at it and I'm fast.  I make $35 to $40 an hour.  The very least I ever make is on an account that I make 10.5 cpl on and that is $25 to $30 an hour.  There is no job I could get anywhere else that I could make that much an hour.  I think I am paid very well.  Yes, it's worth $25 to $40 an hour for me to do MT.  If you can't make enough, you need to find some other job.
And some MTs aren't serious enough.

Some are bad some aren't...
Acute care is not easy. Not for a beginner anyway. Sometimes on the account I am on I just want to scream because I do get a lot of ESLs and they can be challenging. But there are some doctors who aren't so bad. Some days you may get terrible dictators and you think you aren't getting anywhere or making much of anything. Then another day you may have a better day where there aren't so many bad dictators and you get more done. I work on an account with a learning hospital which is a hospital where they have residents who are learning. It is a huge hospital and there are 35 pages of docs on the doctor list. That is not counting the residents either. No I am not kidding. It is rare to get the same doctor except every once in a while. You aren't doing the same ones everyday.
Some aren't cut out
Some MLS's are just not cut out for editing- me for one. I tried for at least 6 months. My lead switched me to picking up the straight typing work on the accounts. I get the more difficult dictators which cuts my rate down but its still better than I can muster in editing. My problem - I can't edit and continue listening at the same time.
come on, aren't you going a little overboard here sm
I welcome the disagreement, I know everyone feels differently, BUT I too am entitled to my own opinion, and I simply pointed out a problem that I have seen here, and it's embarassing to ME personally to be "associated" with these negative people. I'm sorry if that offends you so much. Maybe fool was too harsh, maybe I should have said something like childish or bitter, I don't know. I just stated my own opinion, and don't care who agrees with it or who doesn't.
