On this tight budget, I do not have cable. What is the latest on Katrina?

The message boards have disintegrated into name calling and absurdity.  My local stations are not running any news.  What is going on down in New Orleans?  It is 5:41 PST here and I have just read on a message board they are predicting 10,000 deaths?  Surely this is not so

You get what you pay for, budget prices=budget training
At least that is what it looks like to me.
Hang on tight.
There will stil be lots of rocky hills to make it over, but you will be happier once you are over them. I will be praying for you and your kids!
Tight calves?
Anyone have really tight calves from using your foot pedal? I know I should alternate feet more but I prefer a certain side. I also noticed that if I get down on my knees with my lower legs tucked under me, I can't sit comfortably because my calves are so big and tight. I had a massage the other day for the first time in a while and the massage therapist asked if I ran, said I had tight thighs. I'm just concerned I'm going to get bad circulation or something - I already feel a little wobbly when I walk first thing in the morning. Is this a normal side effect of the job and nothing to worry about?
Wow, Aeron is $$$$. I googled, and I think that one is way out of my budget.
It looks like a great chair, tho.
Hang tight and don't give up!
You should have read the first few mammograms I typed. Wish I would have saved them for a good laugh now! It does get better and then one day you will be typing it before the doc says it. You might also think one day how boring it is to type the same thing over and over. I went through that about the 7th year, kind of like a marriage, really! :)
Not on my budget. I usually can find something on if I am dying to watch T.V.

desk clerk at a low-budget hotel -
I called in sick with the flu, and that night the place was robbed at gunpoint.  I had never been so happy to be sick!
I was at first, but we're on a budget plan so I know how much we have to pay each month.

I so badly need a vacation. And one simply isn't in the budget.
But you know, having travelled far and wide with a man who could take me places, I did learn it isn't where you go, it is who you go with....

Yes, would love to meet, date, fall in love with and marry a rich fellow. Having a two income household would be a welcome change if the guy was the Mr. Right.
They are trying desperately to balance their runaway budget
Have you heard about the new naturalization process aimed at 11 million illegals in the country... along with some hoops to jump through (Learning English - ???) etc., they must pay 2000 dollars.

Do the math 11 million x 2000
its not a lot but its something
Sage advice. IT isn't priced out of the budget.
Thanks!
budget busters...patch those holes! =) sm
No, you are NOT the only one...our pockets don't just have holes...
rising costs are ripping GAPING TEARS in our pockets =) But the fact that you're aware of it is a good thing...because you have the ability to mend those tears. I don't know if you use a budget, but if you don't it might help to create one. Having a financial plan and a budget are the "needle and thread" you need to keep your pockets full. (and I bet a LOT of people are just going into more debt rather than adjusting their spending to put a patch on those soaring fuel and food prices.) So...grab your needle and thread...and Happy Sewing...anyone for a Quilting Bee?! =)
yeh, we have to have a tight grip on our social graces

We'll start walking around wanting to backhand everyone who looks at us sideways.

Hug your kids extra tight tonight. (sm)
It will make you feel better, but he will DEFINITELY need it. Be prepared for it to take a few days to really affect him. I went thru something like this last year with my 12yo. There was a bomb at her school. She was OK until 2 days later, and then she just totally lost it. She said, "oh my God, Mom, we all could have just been gone."
Yes. My legs would get so tight and my feet and ankles

swell horribly.  I have to loosen the shoestrings on my tennis shoes to get them on, but if I'm up moving around the swelling goes down and then I have to tighten the strings.   As someone else said cut back on salt - I use salt substitute but it still isn't good in large amounts, and move around a few minutes every couple of hours.

This is not abnormal and does come from sitting so much and I've known lots of MTs with the same issue.

radiologists and radiology services are very very tight with money - sm
You always have to keep an eye open for who is hiring and who is looking to switch to another service. I for one, have managed to get the work I had by just letting radiology offices know who I was and where I lived. My reputation spoke volumes and references even more. However, there will always be that one person or company that will undercut your rate just to get the work. But keep in mind, depending on the radiology office or radiologist, they may keep crap work just to save $$. Others will not, and eventually I always get called back.

You cannot expect people to just hand over their paycheck to you and say, "yeah, here is who I'm working for. Call them up." Would you want someone cutting into your paycheck? I know I wouldn't. Take the work while it is there. Feast or famine. And always keep YOUR OWN eyes open for business.
I get that if I wear tight-fitting jeans or shorts and....
sit for a long time. I haven't had that problem since I switched to baggy pants or scrubs while working. Good luck.
My telephone service is VOIP, but it s through my cable service, along with my cable internet. .
We have had VOIP for about a year now and I love it. I really can't tell a difference in traditional service, except the price. One of the best calls of my life was to Bellsouth to cancel our service!
I do love those younger gals though, the always pudgy ones in hip riders and too too tight tops.
so attractive with the roll hanging out.
If they're tight enough, hang them in front of or behind your ears. Sound is conducted through
s
VERY hard to get - a few companies have rad tied up pretty tight. The hospital I work for sm
will not even look at a new company for radiology. The TAT is too tight, the IS issues complex, and the radiologists do not want to have to proof their reports. You would be better off with medical records or small offices to start to build your size and reputation.

Comcast cable has ULD that goes through their cable sm
and there are no limitations. I asked them. They said that you could use the phone 24/7 and it would make no difference. The cable modem has a telephone connection and backup battery in there, all in one unit. If you lose your power, the backup battery kicks in for 12 hours I think they said. I personally was reluctant but it is clearer than Verizon regular phone service. Clear as a bell! It is $39.95 a month. If you have any cable service, you might want to check and see if they have this. This is VOiP protocol but I just have never seen anything that was as clear as theirs.

If Comcast has this, it is my guess that the other cable internet services either have it or will have it in the future. This is fairly new with Comcast.

Katrina
You are so right about the "forgotten" people. This is like 9/11 where everything was and is still focused on the WTC and NY. The people whose lives were interrupted by the crash in PA and the Pentagon are rarely remembered or mentioned.
Katrina
We live in the northern part of Michigan out in the boonies and my husband is a volunteer firefighter which is what we have in this area. At his meeting last evening, the chief announced that any interested firefighters should apply to help FEMA in the clean-up effort. They are paying $24 per hour and living conditions are "rustic". My husband is unable to go but two from the department applied. This has nothing to do with fires, only clean-up. Why can't the people who are able help for free without all these checks? I'm sure there would be a few "rotten apples" looking for valuables to steal but I'm sure this could even happen with the "checked" helpers. I am in poor health and cannot physically go but I do feel I would like to help in some way in addition to cash donations.

Also, I am so glad that there are people helping the animals. I would be the one sitting on the bridge refusing to leave without my dogs & cats as they truly are members of my family.
Our latest cat did that...

Not drink out of the toilet, but about a year ago, she disappeared.  She's inside 100% of the time, so she wasn't hard to find, but she was pulling back the blankets on the bed and hiding under all the covers.  Sure enough, she was sick and had to be put on antibiotics.  I'm sure she would have died if we hadn't taken her to the vet. I also had another cat quite awhile ago that hid whenever he got sick.

I hope your kitty comes home!  My husband said that when he was young, they had a cat that would roam and be gone for long stretches of time, but he always came home.

Actually, we have to keep up with the latest
technology, medical terms, etcetera, as well. We do not just go to school and learn everything at once. Things in medicine change often. Plus there are a million things you will learn throughout your career in this field as you go. It is a constant learning experience for both new and seasoned MTs.

Personally, if money were not an object like you said, I would spend my free time relaxing and enjoying being a new mom. If money is not an object, why find something to give yourself even more work? They are only babies once and will be grown in the blink of an eye...enjoy the time you have.
RE: Katrina
But, with Katrina, they could have been online and backed up somewhere inland where it would not have bothered the records.
Anyone out there in Katrina's path? It looks like it's going to be a bad one.
nm
I have this to say on the Katrina issue
I know a minute seems like a lifetime to the people suffering throughout this situation. BUT... American WILL respond. We will open our pocketbooks, donate our time, resources and supplies. Some have even opened their homes. Stop pointing fingers at what is not being done. This is an unprecedented catastrophy in our country. There are many issues to deal with. It's like our boss at work always says, we don't always know what is going on behind the scenes or why something is being done, but trust that things are being done.  Stop the blaming and complaining and do something positive.Put some effort into getting supplies together instead of coming to this board to point fingers and blame. Stop making it a political issue or a racial issue. It is neither. Spend your time in prayer instead of criticism.
Volunteering as MT to help with Katrina
Does anyone know where I can go to volunteer as a MT to help in the Katrina clean up?  The Red Cross has no idea!!!
The latest with Keystrokes

New to this site.  Read something a while ago about Keystrokes not hiring.  Does anyone know anything about them now?  How are they to work for and how do they pay?  Thanks for any information, good, bad or ugly.

Did you see the latest picture of her (sm)

possibly pregnant, reading the junk magazines while going through the grocery store line?

So very, very few good or talented actors these days.  Give me Jerry Lewis or Bill Murray any day.  And actresses?  I can't even list any I like anymore besides Marily Monroe.

Katrina criminal..
Sorry, I don't see your logic here. So, if 1 in 4 was a Katrina evacuee, that means 3 of the 4 were your homegrown criminals - right?
the latest story

another MT friend of mine sent me this email

My friend's daughter works in a dermatology office.  They are opening a new additional office.  They determined that with the opening of a new office, it was far better to now buy a system for transcribing their own documents and it also allows doctor to input the codes for billing.  So, they no longer need their Transcriptionist or their coder.  Their coder is going to do other duties at the office and their home transciptionist is SOL.

So-if they had not opened a new office, they would not of put out for the money, but with the new additional office, this system will be taking care of the 2 jobs above for both offices.  Doctor was most definitely considering sending all of this kind of work to India, as he is from India, but when the American office manager found this out, she put a stop to it immediately.  So-that is my horror story for the week that makes me have even more knots in my stomach.

I'm on their latest upgrade right now..sm..
so it's still buggy. I origiinally bought it in December of 2005. That version was worse than the upgrade I installed Saturday. I won't bother uninstalling and reinstalling after reading your email. Thanks for writing.
I've tried ByteScribe and ExpressScribe and the sound isn't as clear on them, especially when you slow down or fast forward so I'll either stick with StartStop and not use the hot keys or I'll try an external sound card for my laptop with the ByteScribe WavPlayer. I've tried the Turtle Beach Audio and that helped make things louder but it didn't help with the slow down and speed up sound clarity.
Is there anyway you can go back to the original version? If you have the original installtion CD, I would think you could. I don't since I bought it originally in Dec. 2005. Thanks again for writing.
TO ADMINISTRATORS- Katrina board?

Would it be possible to set up a Katrina board?  I work with a lot of the MTs, QAs, supervisors and ancillary personnel from the New Orleans area.  We are all looking to make sure that our friends and coworkers from that area are safe or if they are in need, what they need.  Could you set up a board so that those of us looking for people can ask about them and for displaced people to try to find some help?  I think it would be greatly appreciated.

is it possible the accounts are affected by Katrina?
Many large hospitals and clinics in those three states are not running right now and so there would be no dictation coming in?
Katrina's Displaced Pets

As most of you know by now, lots of the evacuees are refusing to go because they don't want to leave their pets behind.  For all you you pet lovers out here, I've found two sites that are trying to help out in this area that I thought I'd pass on...

To discussion of Katrina victims

Everyone is playing the blame game.  It doesn't matter who did what or did not do now.  What matters now is to go on with life and reach in our hearts (Although some of you do not seem to have one) and give to the less fortunate.  This disaster will not only effect those in the coastal areas.  This will effect the whole United States and the world in some form or another.  Louisiana had a population estimated at 4 million.  More than a 1/4 of that population is without homes.  Can you imagine the indignity they indure living in shelters?  As a Louisiana resident, I would like to point out that the victims in the media are not the only victims.  They are the poorest of poor.  They do have many families and individuals that are displaced, living with relative, hotel rooms, no jobs.  Other states have taken in many of the victims but there are small rural communities and cities all over Louisiana itself that have taken in these people.  In the small high school in my community, enrollment went up by 200 students almost doubling the student body.  The small Catholic school my son attends took in over 40 students. Grocery stores running out of food because the extra people and trucks being delayed.  The list of changes and difficulties go on.

Like 9/11, this disaster will forever change America.  Not all of the changes will be bad although it seems that way now.  This is the time people should stick together and focus on the good things that are happening, not the few people that take advantage of the situation or the people who have no souls and think of themselves.  Take an active roll in helping these people, you are not only helping them, you are also helping yourself and the whole country.  I have visited the shelters and I have close friends who have actually gone to help with the rescue.  Again, this did not just happen to the gulf coast.

I will continue to say an extra prayer for all victims, and especially those of you who seem not to have a heart or soul where others are concerned.

Katrina in Mississippi/Alabama

Does anyone know of contacts in Mississippi/Alabama that are needing help for their people who have lost everything?  We chose to donate cash to the Salvation Army.  By the time I got around to cleaning out my closets, neither the SA or ARC were taking clothing donations and I'm one of those people who is very bad about buying things and then never wearing them so much of the stuff has tags still attached, not exactly junk.  Now that it's gathered up, I'll just donate it to our local Helping Hands but would like do whatever we can do to help the people of Miss/AL in particular.   It seems they are the "forgotten refugees."  At least in our area, we see very little about them but did see a news clip last night that looked like they were as devastated as NO, if not more so.  Surely they need help too?  TIA for any info.

RE: Katrina in Mississippi/Alabama
We had the same problem. All kinds of good stuff and no one had room left for donations of clothing, etc. Our community came up with the idea of a gigantic garage sale and donate the proceeds to the Red Cross. So that is exactly what is happening next weekend. Sorry if this is a double post, my cat ran over my keyboard. He feels so good every morning!!
Not totally replaced...only for Katrina
nm
God bless the Katrina victims
God bless all those people..My heart breaks every day over this tragedy and each day it hurts me more and more..New Orleans destroyed, peoples lives destroyed, homes, jobs, animals..through no fault of their own..God bless them all.  I pray they will be able to start over, both mentally and physically, and I pray which ever part of our govt, be it local, state or federal stands trial for this criminal neglect of American citizens..
Stedman's does the same thing. With the latest

electronic word books, you can only download 2 times.  I have 2 computers and I download to both, in case something happens I have a backup.  I also tend to have computer issues for some reason and when I try to do a reinstall of the OS it doesn't keep my Stedman's.  Since I can only download twice that makes me not able to use it.   I tried to company all Stedmans to a BUS drive in case I had to restall again, but it won't work and you can't copy from one computer to another, you have to have the original disk.

I'm not thrilled with it, but I don't think they are doing anything illegal.

Oreck!! The BEST! & Hurricane Katrina
They are a company in New Orleans, I believe, and in chatting with their reps, they said how much their company was flattened by Katrina. I ordered mine right after the hurricane - had to wait a bit, but SO worth it. I have since learned that most hotels use Orecks for cleaning - they are AMAZING. Only wish I had one years ago...And yes, the little one is awesome, too!! I look forward to vacuuming - sick, huh?!
The latest InScribe from Emdat sm
Will work with my USB Infinity pedal as I have just set it up. It will also run with InstanText. QUITE the upgrade from the Emdat I tried to use about 6 or 7 yrs ago I can tell you that. It is MUCH better, user friendly and I think I'll be more productive on it.

doggone, looks like it's the latest version now
I had the same problem, thanks for posting the link. But I downloaded it and it was v.4.15 again! I downloaded Switch and that won't work either.

It's beginning to look a lot like they don't WANT it to work with .dss anymore!
Not just fires. Remember Katrina?
There could be a tornado.  Yes, records are sometimes lost but that is NO REASON to send PHI to a stinking place like India or Pakistan or wherever.  I could give a rip less whether an MT in India has ANY job or not and certainly not mine.
The Latest Word...found it!
It's published by Elsevier. To find the link, just Google The Latest Word. It's only a couple of hits down the search results list. I wasn't able to copy the web site address, since it came in as an RSS feed (ignorant about that). But it's at www.elsevier.something.
