Regarding poverty in America... A little survey

Do you believe that:

A:  Poverty is mostly the result of poor choices in life, either by yourself or by your parents and grandparents before you, thereby setting up the vicious cycle.  Early parenthood, out-of-wedlock births, no father in the home, recycled boyfriends in and out of a home, lack of early childhood stimulation with books/toys, lack of routine and academic expectations, etc.

OR

B:  Poverty is societal.  Poor people have no choices in America and no real opportunity or ability to raise themselves out of poverty.  The way to end poverty is to increase social programs until people are not living in poverty anymore.  Poverty is societies fault and the government's fault and therefore theirs to fix.

Poverty in India versus America
Honey, why do you think they work for 4 cents a line on average.  If you have never been there, you do not even know what you are talking about.
poverty
neither!
Perpetual poverty.

e:poverty..opinion from the inside out

I am one of 6 born to parents who (yes, the same for all 6) who were both born in the same low income area of town, little education past 6th grade, yet what attracted my parents to each other in the beginning was there committment to do better for themselves and get out.  Yes, they started having us kids at a young age (hormones, lack of sex education, etc), but they raised us all with love, in the church and the strong faith that with hard work, we all could do better.  It was'nt easy, going to school in hand me downs, not having the nicest things, but with love and committment,  all of us kids got our education and all graduated from college, some 2yrs, some 4.  My parents were so proud of us but as we got older and dared to speak up to daddy (very firm man), we kinda said...you demand the knowledge for us, then we demand the same for you.  My parents did eventually get their GED's and you would have thought they graduated from Harvard.(I swear daddy did it as a challenge more to not let us kids down).just the same in our book that they even took the challenge. It has opened up such a world for them both, if we can't find mom, she's usually at the library lol.

As I got older I realized that yes, we did get help with food stamps when bills were high but both my parents worked long hours to make ends meet and we were loved and cared for, sometimes rebelling against the strictness, but looking back, I see why.

On the other hand, I can look at some of my aunts, uncles and cousins, the ones who kept believing my grandmother, who beat it into my dad and his siblings heads that they "won't mount to much, ya never gonna make it out here, so quit dreaming and just let the govrnment folk take care of you"!  I love granny dearly but that is the mentality that She was raised with.  The cycle broke with my Dad and one other Aunt, but ironically, that has caused an uneasy distance from the rest of the family, including granny who not once attended any of the graduations.  We're the "high falooting book smart kin" who are too good to come home...not, we just would like to have them at our homes sometimes and it hurts.  It hurts to see my extended family living in the lowest part of town, can't watch the news anymore because of all the shootings, drug busts, etc and we tend to hear from the cousins and their kids when they call from jail needing bail.

Thank God some of my cousins did come to live with us over the years and they are now educated, productive citizens, living a decent life who have broken that cycle of mentality & poverty.  It's a struggle when you are born into nothing, are told you never will have anything, look around you and see nothing but the projects, drugs and poverty and see the programs that are offered but your parent or parents are suspicious of, therefore keeping the chains on.  This coming from my cousins.

Ok, sorry, did not mean to ramble on and on, just wanting to answer from the inside that I've heard about growing up.

Easy to blame it on poverty

I grew up in poverty, much like Loretta Lynn in Coal Miners Daughter.  I mean poverty.....pair of shoes a year, you name it, yet I never murdered anyone, nobody in my family murdered anyone, we didn't rob the local gas station, we didn't murder tourists.  We also didn't hang around on the street corner selling drugs.  We worked, all of us, doing whatever it took to survive and not a one of us ever collected public assistance.  In fact I had never heard of public assistance until I was in my 20s and had moved out of state to Texas and saw somebody using food stamps and didn't know what they were!  I thought Texas had a special colored money different from the "green" I was used to seeing.

Education doesn't cost a dime. I don't care if you have to wear clothes with holes in them, it's your MIND that matters, not what you wear to school.   College is just about free for anybody who wants to go with special programs especially for single mothers, minorities, and those under certain income levels.  I loved learning from a very young age and with my own children, school comes first above and beyond all other activities.  They work for what they want, both inside the home and out. I have four, not one has ever been in trouble, not one drinks or smokes.  So saying poverty breeds violence is an excuse.  What people need are parents with responsibility, and having 5 or more children out of wedlock by different fathers is not responsible.  Not working is not being responsible. Not setting boundaries for your children is not responsible.   I know many all-white absolutely destitute areas in coal country and you can drive through there without getting shot, mugged, or having your car stolen.   I knew many nurses in the New Orleans area who grew up in the projects, went to college and decided they wouldn't raise their children like that.  That's responsibility. Not letting your pre teen and teen children run the streets at all hours, that's responsibility.  Working and showing your children you can succeed with schooling and working, that's responsibility.  Not showing up at school yelling prejudice because your child smacked a teacher and got expelled, that's responsibility.

I did a quick search for crime stats and found this:

http://www.cityrating.com/citycrime.asp?city=New+Orleans&state=LA

Also, my ex is in the national guard in Texas and was there when people were relocated to help keep order.  He saw people dragging in televisions, designer clothes and shoes, etc., all with the vouchers they were given to find housing.   Texas welcomed people with open arms and a small percentage did find housing and went back to work, but the larger majority wasted the money and then were extremely upset that there was no more.   These were people of all races.  One businessman offered his home to a white family of 7 and told them they didn't have to pay until they went to work.  Four months later they still weren't working and when he went in the house to do a repair they requested, the house had been ruined, totally.  Carpets burned and stained, holes in the walls, absolute filth.  The home was worth 256,000 when he provided it to them, and after the finally got them out it took him just under 100,000 to redo the destruction.  Once again, poverty is no excuse!   They should have taken the opportunity to look for work and been happy they were in a great neighborhood outside of Houston with good schools and good churches, full community support.  I have an illness that will kill me and I'm in pain daily, but I work and I'll keep working until I drop.  I couldn't anymore support my family on Disability than sprout wings and fly.   It all depends on mindset and determination and nobody told me when I was born that I should expect our government to just hand me everything and I can sit back and do nothing.

India jobs and poverty
I agree with mag's post! Mag, you must live in Ohio like me. We are a very impoverished state right now, #1 in bankruptcy and #1 or close to it in foreclosures in the U.S. President Bush has DONE NOTHING for our state. . . many, many jobs have been lost. I quit doing transcription this year because like many other posters on this board, I'm not going to work for 8 cpl with over 35+ years' experience. I might as well work at Wendy's or McDonald's. At least you get the minimum wage and your food at reduced prices or free. . . . which is more than I can say for most transcription jobs. It was a struggle and a very hard decision for me to reach because I loved transcription but the money just isn't there any longer. For the few who say they make a decent living, they must type 20 hours a day to do so. The only reason these jobs are outsourced, whether to India, Pakistan or Mexico, is to SAVE MONEY! Bottom line! Money!

I just listed some items on E-Bay and made more in one week than I made in a month doing transcription. So why bother any longer?

I agree, ten years from now we will probably be a third world country.
ABSOLUTELY. Poverty doesn't just happen. The programs
shouldn't just pay you to sit on your butt and do nothing. People need to be working for what they get. I wouldn't care if they shoveled public sidewalks in the winter here, just make them earn what they get instead of just giving a handout. After a while, they'd want a better job than what they could get for what they consider "free money" and they'd work to find a job. Pay for training if we must, but compel them to GET A JOB or do the work that the government needs done. Why pay a Dept. of Public Works person $15+ per hour to shovel sidewalks when we could give they welfare patron a shovel and make them earn it???
Will you share what you think poverty wages means, i.e. pay scale? nm

INDIA WILL CONTINUE LEADING US-BEEN OVERSEAS AND SEEN POVERTY!!!!!
So many of us do not know what it is like to live in poverty.  India is still divided between the rich and poor.  Consequently, that leaves the so many of the poor to work like dogs just to support themselves and their extended family members.  I am tired of everyone talking about the Indian MTs.  We need to be in their shoes also.  All and all, AMERICA IS THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE!!!!!  THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITY!!!!
Open your eyes. Poverty is very much alive in our own country.

What's the survey for?
We have this one, and it works just great.....
MT pay survey!
I am a MT working part time, like less than 20 hours a week. I was curious to the ones who work full time at this.  What do you make a month and which company do you work for?  I would like to see if there are actually MTs out there making some good money or decent money and what kind of companies provide that.  I just wonder what the majority of you are making.  With me working so little hours, I don't know what to expect if I worked full time.  I just want some insight.
Please be sure and weigh in on the survey, thanks. nm

Hold on before you take that survey!
I have seen this lady before. I could swear when we first checked out her "pay me to take surveys" MLM scam site before she had previously worked at Bloomingdale's, but I do not recall that she had worked there for 20 years or had worked anywhere for 20 years. Seems to me she had references from several people she had supposedly worked with from several different places all swearing up and down what a wonderful and qualified employee she was (too much so, if you get my drift). I don't recall ANY of those said jobs being QA positions, more like sales or clerical. She seems to have had a lot of jobs for someone her age who worked for 1 company for 20+ years.

My point here is that this gal was operating a pyramid scheme just a couple months ago. Her original site was "Join here and pay $20 to take survey's about our MT business, and then refer people to me and you will get $5.00 per person who signs up under your name." I don't believe she is interested in any of this information being factual, she just wants to collect it (along with our personal data) so she can make money by selling it to God only knows whom, probably costing us our jobs or at the very least a whole lot of aggravation with e-mail boxes being filled with spam from other companies. Her only goal (in my opinion) is to make money in a marketing scheme. I guess she thinks the national MT companies are going to pay her for this data just because she collected it? She will claim its accuracy because she did a survey? I also find it odd that while she talks about QA this and QA that, it seems to me what she really means is quality control - and that is a big difference, odd she would not know the difference, isn't it?

Being a former Spheris employee myself, if she was as "all that" in the QA field, she should have started with them. I do wonder if she is still with them and, if not, then my guess is this is how she thinks she can make a living since, apparently, no other companies will have her?

One thing we all noted before, and it is rather apparent on her new site too, is that for someone who has been an MT for 3+ years and is supposedly as good as she claims herself to be, she sure makes a whole lot of errors.
Umm, I took the survey and it had no questions that

Survey on IC's vs. Employee

Could anyone tell me if they are an IC or an employee and who they work for?  I am trying to find out if I should change all of our IC's to employees or not.  Also, could you tell me which one you like better?

Thanks

2007 survey
Says MTs make an average of $27K a year.

Remember pay is production based. If you don't have experience, you're going to be slow.

I would advise you to enroll in one of the better schools. You're going to have a very difficult time getting a job otherwise.
MT salary survey
http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Medical_Transcriptionist/Salary/by_Industry
Interesting Survey!

I hope I posted this in the right spot! Kind of new to this forum, especially with posting messages.  I downloaded a medical transcription survey from 2007 from the MTIA web site which I thought was very interesting and would like to share it with you all if you have not read it.

I loved the summary point stating "Doctors do not generate revenue, documents do. Accurate and complete healthcare documents are essential to a doctor's and institution's revenue cycle."

I remain hopeful and optimistic that in the future that we will once again be recognized for how important our jobs really are.  All of us can go out and get ourselves a medical secretarial position or other positions in the medical field, but it takes a special talent to do the job we do, and I think many people who think our jobs are not worth the money we deserve, possibly can't do OUR jobs.

This is the link and if it does not work, go to the MTIA.com web site, search under press releases and it is the Bentley MT survey for 2007. Hope you find it interesting.

Line rate survey
Can I get some examples of line rates people are getting from MTSO's.  Also if you do give me this information let me know what part of the country and what type of line. (ex. 65 character with spaces)
The Hay Group did a national survey
in 1999. It was very comprehensive, and covered hospital, service and IC MTs across the country. I'm looking at it now, and the drop in compensation between then and now is sickening.

If you contact them, perhaps they have updated the figures. They're online at haygroup with the usual before and after.
I promise I will once the survey is completed....sm
I don't want to influence the results in any way so the information will be unbiased and more meaningful.

Jay
I think it is kind of odd that this survey showed
posts were on here this morning telling people they'd pay $5.00 for every e-mail address you sell them.  I'd be very careful when you are dropping your e-mail address.  The survey does not seem to have any company name or anyone's name attached to it for that matter.
Survey Notebook Vs Desktop (sm)

Which is preferred, Notebook or Desktop for working 8+ hours per day doing MT?  Any specifics you'd like to share about processor/memory would be helpful.  Upgrading my computer and deciding which would work best for me.

I am doing a survey on radiology rates of pay. If you would like to

Voice Recognition Editing Survey

I have the opportunity this spring and summer to speak to MTs and business owners in various parts of the country, and one of the topics I'll be discussing is voice recognition editing.  After working with it for a year, I have my own opinions on the subject, but I'm hoping to collect information from other MTs who have been performing both editing and traditional transcription for the past 6 months or longer.  Your participation would be greatly appreciated.

The link to the survey is: http://www.webstream.us/survey/index.php?sid=1

I "work" for an online survey place
I do surveys for PineCone Research and that is the only one I know of that is legit. I get products before they come out in the store a lot, too. With each survey I get chosen for (not much, maybe one or two a month so you can't make a living off it, lol), I get a $5 check in the mail. Sometimes, I get chosen to do an online brainstorming session about some new product a company wants to put out, but that has only happened twice in the two or three years I've done it. It's a nice little bonus, and you get to see some new products before anyone else does but you definitely couldn't make a living off it. :) Just thought I'd share. I usually just read here the past few months.
Survey - inquiry minds want to know - how many lines...sm
can you normally type in a 6 hour day?  Not your highest, your average please.  I know there will be specifics, but base it on your average day, average dictator, average workload.  I am very curious to see what everyone else can do.  TIA
I've completed the survey & I hope all

It took six months to compile the results of the survey/questionairre

asking about how MQ can do better.  We got a letter telling us the findings 9 months later and on it apparently lots of MTs beitched about no pay increase and they are looking into it.  That was 3 months ago.

MQ is too busy plotting and planning how to rip off the clients and MTs to be bothered with the current problems.  They have a bazillion managers but no one seems to be able to keep the simplest things done on a timely basis.

I think America....
is getting tired of the political correctness gone amok.  While I'm  all for separation of church and state, as the original forefathers intended it to be, which is that the government shall not establish a religion and then force the citizens to BE that religion (as it was with the Church of England), I don't think they intended for us to be afraid to say Merry Christmas.  As much as some may not like  it, this country is overwhelmingly Judeochristian, and most Christian.  I'm sick and  tired of all the time, money, and energy spent on making sure a school calls the Christmas Holiday "Winter Break."
DTS America
Has anyone worked for DTS America?
DTS AMERICA
Thanks for the info.
DTS America
Has anyone had experience working for DTS America?  Are they okay?  Any problems?  Just wondering.  Thank you for your kind information.
Anyone know how many MTs are in America?

DTS America? I know a DTS Inc. nm

America
This is America. Last I checked we speak English here unless you are gifted enough to speak more than 1 language or you are a native of another country that does not speak English. If I went to France I would not expect them to know English, I would learn their language, French. This is America. We speak English as far as I know. If you are born here chances are you will learn English as your language unless your parents are immigrants then you might learn English and some other language. What language do they use in the schools? ENGLISH!!! I am not learning another language here in my own country. If I want to learn another language I will go to another country. Don't get me wrong I would not mind knowing another language but I get fustrated when people come here and think we should learn their language when in fact they need to learn English.
DTS America
I am thinking of possible employment with this company.  Has anyone ever worked for them or know anything about this company called DTS America from Tennessee?
DTS AMERICA

IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE WORKING FOR DTS, BRENTWOOD BRANCH?

DTS America
Anybody out there getting a hard time at the Brentwood Branch by a certain manager?  I have gone to management, but nobody listens.  Seems this company doesn't care how many experienced MTs they lose.  They seem to think we are "disposable".  Don't question a thing, your're job/life will only be made miserable.  I am leaving as soon as I find another company to work for.  Great accounts, lousy company, lousy management.  No communication with employees whatsoever.
MedTrans of America
Does anyone presently, or in the past, work for MedTrans of  America?
America's Got Talent
Anyone watch last night?  Who won?  We saw All That at Carolina Opry in Myrtle Beach and they were awesome!!  Just watched video on internet and they were GREAT last night.
America's Talent
Thanks.  I will have to watch tonight.  Granny is a HOOT also!!  For her age she is a spunky person with a great personality:)
Talk America
I live in North Carolina and cannot find Talk America in my area for $49.95.  Someone else also told me about them.  Where are you?
Professionalism in America...
What happened to professionalism in America?  Have I been at home in my pajamas too long?  Everywhere I go, every business, etc. I have come across people who are just so unprofessional looking.  Dropping my child off at school the other day, a delivery man got out of his truck looking sloppily dressed.  Uniform shirt was dirty, untucked with belly hanging out.  This is not seen only in men in delivery positions or blue collar workers.  It is seen everywhere.  Offices have gone to casual wear.  What happened to the crisp clean uniforms and nice dressed women in offices?  When I worked outside the house, even when we did have a "casual day" it still was somewhat professional looking (no athletic shoes).  Don't you think this contributes to laziness on the job?  Wouldn't you rather be served by someone clean looking and bright than not?  Do supervisers of these positions accept this look?
Only in North America
http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/DictionaryResults.aspx?refid=1861738574

By the way...I worked a 12 hour shift today. I really don't need the correction on my spelling. I realize I hit the 'n' instead of the 'm'. I'm done now...this is dumb.
The one, the only, the woman who has done SO MUCH FOR AMERICA!!!!!

HILL-OH-REE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO ONE IN AMERICA SHOULD BE PAID BELOW

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  No job is worth this wage.

When I was a new grad in 2005 I was offered 7 cents per line for every single company I was offered a position with and that was a good bit of companies, btw. That was employee status and that was IC position too. Even now with 1-2 years experience I get offers of 8.5-9 cents a line.

Now MTSOs are profiting off of slave labor. How can you sleep at night knowing that you are paying your MTs HALF of what they should be making?  I cannot wait til their doctors make it impossible for them to profit too.  Happy day.

All I can say is everyone has to start somewhere and just becuase you are a new grad from college doesnt mean you are paid half of what you should be paid.

PATHETIC.

I get making an MT prove themselves for a few weeks at a lower rate (until off of QA) and then up it to 6-7 cents.  If they aren't worth it.. DROP THEM.

My MTSO was so honest and fair.  She would NEVER EVER think of paying that crap.  We need more people like her.  Out for her employees and not herself.

You know, maybe it's just my PMS speaking today, but I plan on getting my own accounts and I will NEVER EVER treat my employees like crap and pay them like that.

For 2 weeks of full time work (which for us MTs just starting out is OVER 40 hours) you pay them (based on 12,000 lines a payperiod) 360 (.03) without taxes taken out?? When they should be making $720 (.06) on the low end of the totem pole?

Wow.  You guys are makin out!!

"fleecing of America"

Does anyone still do that "fleecing of America" segment (or whatever it was called)?  We are being fleeced!!!!!  But again, the other side which promotes offshoring will present a stronger side than us.  All we would get is emotional support from a minority of viewers, which doesn't last long.  We will be told, as I have, "No one is making you do this job.  If you don't like it, do something else."  The public has to realize how important this job is to THEIR well-being.  Now, they can be told that offshoring is saving them money and they will like that.

That's where our professionalism comes into play but the only way I can see to prove the need for our services is to have all other alternatives fail and have that make a major impact somehow to make people aware, especially the physicians, that we need qualified AMERICAN MTs for America's health records.  Odd thing is, greed gets one only so far.  Then it tends to backfire -- taxes, breach of confidentiality, etc.   Some of those "loopholes" may backfire someday.
