In Reply to: How hard is it to type a word in a blank space? I'm afraid - my heard doesn't bleed for you.

Is that all you do, type?  It's not all I do either.  I have to know what I'm talking about, apparently you don't because you can just leave blanks!

We DO listen to the dictation! How else would we fill in blanks?

!

QA works on quota. Frankly, they don't try that hard, either, to fill in the blanks.

Whenever one of my coworkers asks me to listen to a report and fill in the blanks or make SM

corrections, I always put my initials on the report right after hers and I expect anyone who goes into any of my reports to make a correction to do the same and that includes QA people.  Where I work, the transcription clerk will put her initials in a report even if she just had to go into the report and delete a blank line to make the report upload correctly.  She puts an asterisk by her initials to let us know that she didn't make any changes to the text, just made adjustments for uploading purposes.

I've been told at other jobs by the QA bunch that whatever software we use automatically keeps a virtual record of each person who accesses a report, but I just like knowing who else has messed with my report.  I can't tell you how many times when I worked in the office, an irate doctor has come in saying "who's LN" or "who's RB".  So if QA went into the report and changed something, I want the doctor to see their initials too.

oh yeah, forgot that one. Worse than a soap opera. Geez! nm.

And JT is not into intelligence.

Have you ever known anyone in mgmt. with ANY basic intelligence? (nm)

NO BONUSES WHATSOEVER
I will get better and improve my skills in time, as I already have, but if these new things are implemented, I will not be given the opportunity to further improve my skills and get better. I will be canned, I suppose, for not meeting quota. From what I gather on this board, everyone with MQ has a different contract. I am new...you have probably been with them for awhile. I HAVE NO BONUSES WHATSOEVER FOR ANYTHING, NO MATTER IF MY QA SCORE IS 100% (IT WAS 98%). You probably have an older, better contract. Most of us are not whining, we are AFRAID. I actually ENJOY working for MQ (look out, I am ducking as I speak), and would like very much to stay, improve my skills and speed AND make more money. And what the heck is this about not more than a certain percentage of reports going to QA? How ridiculous is THAT? (Sorry for being out of the loop, but I do not receive any communication from MQ whatsoever and only hear these things on this board.) If they make a requirement of only a certain percentage of reports going to QA then the MTs are going to be forced to GUESS what the doctor said when he is coughing, slamming the door, phone ringing, TAPE SKIPPING, cut himself off, unintelligible foreign dictator, obviously said the wrong word by mistake, etc. These things I always send to QA. They are the experts and they should decide whether to leave a blank or risk filling it in, not me. If I was so experienced as to be sure what to do in all of these scenarios, I would be QA!!!!!!!!
No...I have no intention of that whatsoever! nm

No regrets whatsoever
I was tickled pink to leave the office and come home to work! I would not trade my job for 10 office jobs. My main problem is that my relatives do not realize that I can't drop my work to go pay a bill or run to an appointment with them/for them. As far as the lack of socialization - I am out when I want to be. I do spend some days in my PJs, and really don't see the need to change that. I get out to do things with my son, such as movies or lunch. I meet friends for lunch. I have a playdate scheduled with about 10 other moms for us to have a picnic and let the kids play at a local park with a pool. You make an effort to get yourself out when you work at home. It is as much a necessity as breathing, for me. I think the benefits of being home outweigh the drawbacks, big time.
I get no satisfaction from it whatsoever anymore. (sm)

I feel like I really have to push myself to get the work done.  I hate the feast and famine of the work.  I hate working weekends and holidays with no incentives.  I feel unappreciated and isolated with this job.  People act like this career is a joke and I must have plenty of time on my hands, so why don't I just drive to their house tonite?  The only reason I'm keeping the job I have is because of the pay and haven't found the same pay anywhere else!  There aren't a lot of choices anymore and not much medical work in this area so...would have to work for a national and I not only hate working for a national, I hate the pay!

Good luck with what you decide.  There are many things you can do without spending a lifetime in school.  Start checking the papers.  There are other jobs where you can work at home also.

I was told a monkey could do my job - sm
I transcribed for five doctors, 3 nurse midwives, all the correspondence, answered the phones, copied multiple charts a day - all in 8 hours with no overtime. When the office manager told me a monkey could do my job - I quit.

A year later I was in the office - the office now had 3 doctors, 1 midwife, a secretary copied the medical records and answered the phones and handled correspondence and TWO TRANSCRIPTIONISTS could not keep up with just the transcription and were on overtime.

Monkey's are too smart for the job! LOL - nm

Monkey bar injuries
Actually there is more than broken bones that occur. When my daughter was 7 she was not tall enough to reach the steps after she crossed the bars and while trying to reach her hands slipped. She ended up falling and straddling the step(bar), which resulted in surgery 9 hours later, after 7 pelvic exams, at the Children's Hospital. She tore both sides of her urethra from the impact. While waiting in recovery I was commenting to the nurse that I could not believe playing on the playground at recess ended us up in the hospital, she said they saw the same injury numerous times a year and most schools take the monkey bars out when they replace the playground equipment. Ours did.
No call after I sent my resume - no contact whatsoever. nm

A monkey could do your job then. Doctors mispronounce
things all the time, they even spell things wrong.  It is our job to type the proper word and it might not be the word you hear.   Do what you want, but if you can't produce a quality product time to look for another job.
a monkey can learn to type (cut off)

Keep your kids off the monkey bars
How many reports have I typed just this week, 7 year old fell off the monkey bars, sustained both bone forearm fracture.  Monkey bars must be among the most dangerous things on earth.  Always hear warnings to keep kids off trampolines but I've never typed anything on 7 year old fell off trampoline.
I've been using Vista for over a year with no problems whatsoever. sm
I'm even running a very old HP printer.

If you use ShortHand with Vista, you must upgrade to SH 10, but SH 10 also works on XP.
No offense, but your post didn't make any sense whatsoever.
Maybe you didn't explain it right, but I read and re-read and don't understand a thing you just said.
ROFL You're right! Truly! A flying monkey could do this with a little training!
You can get the training on the job as easily as anywhere else.

Like I said before, yes - MT schools will give ground work but it isn't necessary!

Wayyyy too many of us learned this without schools! ROFL

No degree, no certification, no license required!!

Best MTs I've ever known NEVER had "proper education" while those coming from MT schools NEVER got any better than their starting point!!!

ROFL
Who croaked and made you head monkey? You are so full of yourself.

Be realistic! A newbie, fresh out school, no experience whatsoever cannot expect to get accounts

on her own and definitely cannot expect to earn $50k!

EMR is coming whether you like it not and whether your doctors are older or not.  Eventually the older doctors will retire and the new generation coming out of medical school are products of this technological age.  There is no stopping it.

I love it! Chunky Monkey. That is what me and my mother call my daughter. sm

Not to her of course.. She is 10 years old and in a size 14 to 16.  We know it is only a spurt because her father is over 6 ft and I am 5 ft 3 in, not overweight, but spreading.

Monkey has been her nick-name since she was a baby and now when my mother and I are discussing me shopping for clothes for 10 y/o, playing soccer for exercise, etc., we refer to her as chunky monkey.

Just thought I would share that with you.

Monkey bars aren't the problem. I never once fell off. Neither did my brother. Kids need to climb

people skills
I beg to differ. I agree with the OP - your post was rude and condescending. I see no evidence of people skills in anything you wrote or in the "tone" of your post.

Also, your reply had nothing to do with her post. She was sharing good news about a hiring phase going on right now. Too bad you are so miserable that you cannot even recognize when one human being is sharing good news with others.

From what I have seen and experienced with MTSOs in the last 2 years (28 years in this business), there are many owners, managers and supervisors with no clue about how to deal with their employees.

SO, maybe you are the one who needs to find another business.
Looking to upgrade skills, though sm

just for personal reasons, as I'm still working, etc.  I see Medword has a 9 specialty CD set for $269, and of course there is the SUM Advanced package but that's $840.  My goal is to be more employable by just broadening my skills as I've only been doing ER and clinic for years (going on 10); however, I'm certainly not made of money!  ;)  Do you think the Medword one would be okay or a waste of money?  I've heard great things about the SUM program but do you think it's really necessary?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I hope your MT skills

This is where your skills really come into play.
It will drive you mad if you let it.  Sometimes even the doctor is unfamiliar with the med especially specialists.  I have found that on an occasional basis.
$$ should have nothing to do with your skills and conscientiousness. (sm)
you sound like one of the ones who is relatively new to the field (within the last 10 years) who pumps out reports, doesn't spell correctly, and doesn't like being corrected.  Am I right?
Gap in spelling skills, too.
I have noted that misspelled words are everywhere; spelling skills are apparently no longer valued (and I'm talking people with advanced degrees with atrocious spelling and grammar).  I need to go to the dentist and get some teeth fixed from clenching my jaws so tightly whenever a doctor says things like "he itched himself".
not too sure of skills, need advice

Just wondering if any of you have experienced a lot of "knocks" starting out in transcription.  I took an at-home course in 98 and finally got hired in 2000 and trained in office for 8 months.  I worked at home for about 3 months then my husband divorced me.  I continued to work in the medical field for the next 4 years, doing work in a hospital that included med term and typing with 98% accuracy or actual transcription.  My problem is when I find a job my feedback is that I am leaving little words out, or not paying close enought attention to detail.  What can I do to improve this?  the only thing I can think of is just keep practicing but I can't keep an actual transcripton job long enough!  What do I do?

Looking to strengthen skills...
I have been in the field for 7 years with the same account (IM and Family Practice.)  Looking to strengthen my skills.  The areas I feel I need improvement in are grammer, proofing (something I have done very little of), and a stronger understanding of terminology.  If you have any advice on where to go from here.  I do not need a full transcription course, but does anyone offer a "refresher" and/or practice dictation in different specialties.  Thanks so much!!
What if you were an LPN with not so hot typing skills?
Would that duty still be required of you?  Sounds like you are not that busy as an LPN.  Small office?  This was not in your original job description?  I would ask about a pay increase along with the duty increase.
thanks...just knowing there are others, same age bracket, skills, etc...does help...
like you, I LOVE this job, and actually chose it - not the other way around. Fortunately, it has not cost me anything, really, like the other poster mentioned; but I too am scared.

It is always upsetting when you life changes because of things out of your control...at our age, we are from the times when people had one job until they retired. I know that is history, but man, this way is ridiculous. Flying from job to job, no continuity, no structure. What good can come of this anyway.

like the other poster mentioned, who cares about us anyway, really. the rich only care about getting richer, and that crap about giving the tax cuts to the rich and they will 'share it' - what a bunch of fools we have been.

thanks for sharing!
Advice on expanding my skills..

If I  want to specialize in Orthopedic or Cardiology or some other specialty, what is the best way to do this?  I currently only do ER.

Would I  have to enroll in an on-line school or can I just use practice tapes?

Any advice is appreciated!!

Need fast skills update
Need books/tapes to upgrade skills to do acute care work. Any advice on materials I can purchase. Going back to school is not an option right now.
Test your typing skills

If your DD has previous skills she can post
resume on the on-line sites like monster.com.   There are few jobs that are legit.  If they require $$ upfront you can bet they are a scam.
A board to discuss how MT skills can
be transitioned into another line of work couldn't hurt. No matter how secure any job or profession appears to be, the situation can change at any time. That is the reality of the workplace with mergers, technology, etc.

One of the the worst career management errors is to become complacent. I can look back on seventeen years in this profession. It has changed, and not to our advantage. I can't predict the future, but it would be naive not to at least consider other options.

maybe just let them fill it in?
It's a long blank for just time ???
I think she has probably just had her fill
More than hate sounds like she has had 1 too many ESLs to listen to. Know 1 plenty, every report time after time is a little much. I csn understand the feeling, some.
Can someone fill me in?
Where is the new site/what transpired?
The people who hate QA are the ones with bad skills and cannot type for nothing!
Maybe these people should learn how to bring their scores up instead of thinking their mistakes are right!
Maybe if you spend more time honing your skills and

She fears because of her own lack of transcription skills, sm
not because the ESL doctors do not give good patient care.  If you are not up to the job of transcribing the reports, then you should not try to do it.  But do not blame poor patient care on the ESL doctors.
Good research skills the best skill an MT

Your account is too easy for your skills would be my thought.
For instance, you are making very good money easily while other MTs may be on a more difficult account and making less. You may one day be looked at as a person to move into another more challenging account to keep you in the curve of pay for MTs. That would be fair, actually, when you think about it.
failed skills test for national sm

Hi all.  I have been an MT for 10 years and took a skills test for a national and FAILED.

Oh my goodness, talk about a slap in the face!  All I know is they require 90% accuracy and apparently I failed that.

It has me questioning my skills at this point.  PLEASE tell me others of you have had this problem!
