sick of working for crappy companies?

Posted By: Emily Penney on 2008-10-09

I have been thinking about starting my own company. I have done some research and it looks like all I really need is an FTP site, handhelds (that the doc's purchase themselves), and to get accounts. If anyone is interested in doing this with me let me know...or if anyone has any other information on starting a company input would be appreciated!

Why are we working as IC's and the companies are making profits off of us? Lets cut out the middle man and make the money we deserve!!

Venting session = so tired of crappy MT companies...

I have just about had it!  I mean I have over 14 years experience as Transcriptionist and all I can get is crappy pay rates, which now I am okay but could be better....And I am tired of getting crappy accounts!  Whenever I ask to switch over to a different account, they tell me no.  And these companies want PERFECTION, even though noone is perfect, for peanuts!  I have seen places where they want you to work set hours even though you are an IC.  What is up with that?  Plus these places never off any good benefits, if any.  What are we supposed to do.  I am ready to go to a retail job or fast food. Somewhere where I can get out of the house, do my job and not have to worry about it all day long - not have to worry if I get an 9 hour shift worth of VERY BAD dictators.  I bet I could surprise myself at how many hamburgers I could flip in an hour because I sure am tired of seeing how much crappy doctors I can type in an hour.

Does anyone else feel this frustrated?  What happened to this profession?

Working while sick!
Well, it has finally hit my house, specifically me, hard!  The flu has come.  I have coughed and gagged so much that my ears have popped and now everything sounds like it is in a hole or muffled.  Any ideas on how to get my hearing back to normal?  I haven't worked in 3 days as I have not been able to even sit up.  Today is the first day I have even felt like attempting to do anything and I need to get back to work.  It is so hard to work when you can't hardly hear your dictation.
Just my experience.. I get less sick when I am working in the car.
I think it is because I am concentrating on my typing and computer than looking up.  I love being able to work traveling down the road.  For me, I'd rather be making good money while traveling instead of sleeping. Heck, as much as it costs to fill up the gas tank, we have to offset it somehow. As far as the other poster says about hitting bumps, hitting wrong keys etc.. I haven't had that problem. I actually bought a portable desktop board that I set everything on so it stablizes my work area.
Burning my computer. Sick of working.
nm
What service pays sick time, not working, vacations, etc.?
Where? I have never gotten paid for any of these, especially sudden illnesses, or I would be rich!
Working PT and FT for 2 different companies. (Sm)

How do you all do it?  I am trying out another company to see how I like it with anticipation to switch over.  In the meantime, I am working 40 hours for one and 20 for another.  There is still a home to maintain, meals to prepare, grand kids to take to and pickup from school (their mother is a single parent and a nurse so her hours are worse than mine).

I am only intending on doing this for another few weeks until I make my decision, then doing only 1 FT job.

I know there are those of you who do this on a regular, steady basis and I admire your fortitude.   You are made of stronger stuff than I am.

Working for 2 companies.
I am just starting that process. I work IC at one company and am taking the other one on at full time. I don't know how long I will keep the IC company, but I am going to keep them for at least a month. I don't think I could juggle 2 for very long, though with the IC job, I'm not scheduled hours so that will help.
Working for 2 companies or more
It can be done, if my "main service" is low in either of my 2 accounts, which it normally is when I first start in the morning, then I work for company #2 until work starts picking up in my "main service." I also let the main service know that I am working for the other service and to just call or email me if work starts coming in.
what companies are you all working for

Off QA review in 3 or 4 days????

Let's just assume that your company tells the MT to follow the BOS to the letter, and the platform is user friendly, and the MT has 5 or 8 years experience.  Even given that scenario, someone new to a company cannot be expected to turn in a report with 98 to 99 percent accuracy in 2 or 3 or 4 days.  Maybe it would be possible if the MT had only 1 work type or transcribed only 1 doctor.  But throw in 5 or 6 work types, each with a some pecularities to them, a different doctor for each report, maybe the same doctor twice in an 8-hour shift.

Or how about an MT that has been following the BOS to the letter and switches companies and now has to transcribe verbatim - that would make q.d. CORRECT if dictated.  The MT has to stop and think how to transcribe what normally would be INCORRECT.  So the MT hears *hs* and accidentally types at bedtime.....you get the idea.

If a company told me they expect me to be off QA review in 3 days, I would take that to mean they don't care about the details of my work, just turn in what looks good the untrained eye, and let them get their lines billed.

Working for 2 companies
I have a question for all of you that work for 2 or even 3 companies at a time.  Do you ever have trouble with different platforms not working on the same computer?  In other words, if you have one account that uses ExText and another one that uses Docuscribe, do you have problems?  I have been thinking about trying to work for 2 different companies since I can't seem to make a living doing part-time work, and "just maybe" if I go with 2 different companies, I will have enough work (hopefully). Please let me know your experiences, please.  Thank you.
working for multiple companies
I was wondering if any of you work for multiple accounts, and if so how you manage your time between the two of them.  I have been trying to work on one during the day, and one at night, but its not working very well for me at this point.
I am working for multiple companies
I was working 1 job full time split shift afternoon and back in the evening to 1 a.m. The second job I work around it, either in the morning or third shift. They are pretty flexible.
But now I am in a similar situation. I just took one job split afternoon and overnigt and the other job early afternoon split to evening. I sleep during the mornings and after dinner time when my husband watch the kids. I will manage to get 2 full days off when I go to 2 F/T instead of 1 set and 1 flexible job. It should be interesting. I wish you luck. For me, at least the bill collectors are happy now.
Contracts for working at companies?

Hi all,

I was wondering, do MOST of the companies require you to sign a contract to work for them? You know, saying how long you will work for them, etc? I have heard a lot about this lately. Is this the norm? It seems to me that one wouldn't want to work for a company requiring this, as I would think that if they were a good company, employees wouldn't need a contract, they would just stay because they are happy?

Contracts for Working at Companies
If you are truly an "Independent Contractor" then YOU present the company with YOUR contract for THEM to sign. YOU bill THEM for your work, after negotiating a price. Have you ever had work done on your house by a contractor? Did you give him a contract, or did he give you one, after the two of you agreed on a price for specific work? Did you tell him what hours he would work, what tools he would use and how he would use them?

The U.S. Department of Labor has guidelines for deciding who is and is not an "Independent Contractor," and working at home has absolutely no bearing on it:

working multiple companies
For those you who work a full-time job plus a part-time job for a different company, are you using one computer for both?  I thought maybe I should buy a second computer???
If we boycott working for companies that offshore,
boycott medical providers that offshore, and write to our politicians, maybe we can change things. I won't go to any local doctor that uses an offshored transcription outsource. Hit 'em where it counts, right in their big fat wallets. They put us out of work and reduced our wages, so why do we owe them any loyalty? Why should we pay higher medical bills when they're too cheap to pay us what we're worth? Pretty soon, we'll all be on unemployment, foodstamps and Medicaid. One way or another, they'll have to cough up.
True, but that doesn't mean we have to embrace it by working for these companies!
have a spine and absolutely refuse to work for any company that outsources offshore.
Working for offshore owned companies and feeling
j
so all these companies are really Synthescribe? Glad I did not get started working for them! nm
x
So, are you working for the same company. I have worked for 2 companies and I have noticed a huge
difference in the lines I got from each company. The accounts were similar. I never ever got what your talking about but I would average 600-700 lph at one company and the other one  I was lucky to get 400 lph so then I figured out they didnt pay for spaces, footers, headers etc.. and that does factor into your line counts on that platform.
I hate when companies treat us like we're working for pin money

Am I supposed to be happy when a company only gives me 200 or 300 lines a day when they promise you a certain amount (that is higher than that)? How would the company employees (not us lowly transcriptionists) feel if the company told them that they were only getting paid 100 dollars this pay period, that there wasn't enough work. Not enough to pay bills and keep food on the table, just pin money.

Sheesh.

I AM SICK, SICK, SICK AND TIRED

Of bad dictators and QA that takes up for them!!!!  I am sick to death of:

1.  Doc saying paragraph after every sentence.

2.  Docs never dictating the first name of doc they are writing to.

3.  QA asking us to insert certain sentences in certain places for certain doctors who do not dictate them.

4.  Docs wanting their own specific headings but not dictating them.

5.  Docs who ramble, never saying period.

6.  QA asking us to **fix** their grammer, mistakes, fragmented sentences, and verb tenses and sometimes when we do, we are docked points for **not transcribed as dictated.**

7.  QA not wanting anything sent to them, stating **researach medical terms and facilities you are not familiar with.**  If they are not there to help us out, what are they doing there????

8.  Docs, NPs, and PAs who do not know how to dictate, pronounce, or spell.

9.  QA asking us to use BOS, but not knowing it themselves.

10.  Doing work I do not get paid for.

Before QA became involved, in years gone by, if a doc's dictation was awful - then that is what he got for transcription and more times than not, they would straighten up and make a better effort.  Not now - we or QA has to almost do the dictation for them!!  They are the ones with the medical degree - not us.  What happened to us just transcribing what is dictated.  Why can't they be responsible for what prints out??  If someone could let them know how much trouble their dictation style causes, it would cut my transcription time in half.  My list could go on and on.  It is a terrible time to be thinking about getting out of the business, but if this crap keeps up - I have to give it some serious consideration.  The job just AIN'T what it used to be.

Many many crappy jobs for me
1. Emergency Room admissions clerk in a back-woods hospital in rural Western Pennsylvania dealing with drunks, freaks and worse on the 11-7 shift while working with a bunch of angry, nasty shrews who hated life in general and were too busy hating the rest of the staff to pitch in and actually do any work.

2. Working in medical records department of another back-woods Western Pennsylvania hospital (family owned and operated, I kid you not) where the medical records director was the 30-something girlfriend of some 90-year-old racketeering buddy of the hospital's owners and she got hired as MR department director directly from the bangle bracelet counter at the mall.

There are more but these two stick out in my mind the most.
I just think it's crappy to judge m
someone's ability to responsible by their credit report, especially in these times when you can make the same amount of money as you have been and have just the basics (no luxuries) and everything has gone up and you scrape to make ends meet.  I know many people like this now.  I've even read articles on how people are in worse credit card debt than ever because of what I just described and they're bridging the gap by having to charge x amount each month to get by.  It's very sad.  Because one's credit is poor most often isn't because of a lack of responsibility or willingness to pay, just life happening.
Yep they are a crappy school. Unfortunately too

many take the course because it is cheap compared to the good schools, but it ends up costing more when they can't get a job and need further schooling/training.

Have you posted your resume on the job boards?

Knowing about foot pedals or other equipment is no big deal, what you need to know is the terminology, good grammar, research skills  are things you need.

You can look for a mentoring program.   Some companies will pay you a minimal amount for any work you do.  There are some companies who want you to pay a monthly fee.   I don't know the names of companies, but there are companies that are not legit, so be sure and ask about them.

You could also apply to local clinics/doctor's offices, and hospitals.  You would have to work on-site, but that is the best training you can get.

I'm sorry that you have crappy QA. I wish I had you to edit. sm

A good QA will not do that.  Where are you working that you have such bad QA personnel?  I'm not wanting to go to that company, lol.

Hope it gets better and you get helpful mentors.

I'm not currently in QA, but crappy dictators

isn't the only reason for QA.  You'd be surprised at the crappy work that some MTs do and QA corrects the errors so they bad work isn't going to the client.   Some MTs don't feel the need to proof their work, believe that is what QA is for.

crappy work

Must be coincidental, I just had it out today concerning your posting.  I sent a copy of it to the owner, I got a return message to never email "her" (the owner) again from the original person I sent it to.  Hmmmm, my email with cc to the owner must of sent of sparks!  (about what is really going on).  Cherry pickers they are!

but where do all the CRAPPY VR dictations
come from, then?
I guess, crappy dictators are EVERYWHERE !
But we all want to leave our crappy nationals...
and go BACK to the office! LOL. We're TIRED of the peace and quiet!
If so i bet they are a crappy MT. You have to KNOW anatomy to be good.
;P
downright crappy and unfair!!! SM

MQ paid 30% less pay for ASR reports, and they took just as long to edit as they did to type sometimes, so was very frustrating.  I have heard some companies pay straight line rate difference, i.e. if you make 7 cpl typing, you'll make 4 cpl for ASR.  It is totally unfair, as like I said, it does take quite some time to edit ASR, some more/less than others.  Needless to say, I left MQ for KS, who does NOT do ASR!!!!

somewhat. would help if the quality of the dictation wasn't so crappy. nm
nm
Guess what? There would be no cherrypickers if there were no CRAPPY DICTATORS! nm
x
Yes some crappy India people get this work
But I think it is also a great opportunity to keep this IN the USA.
I wouldn't hire you with that crappy attitude either.
nm
Pretty sad when you have to settle for a crappy company because all the rest are no better.
f
How true, I have one very crappy doc that drives me nuts, just got done 10 minutes of him that is-sm
riddled with blanks.  I go through it once more, then the office mgr goes through it and fills in what I cannot get. We have an understanding that I do what I can then send it in luckily on him.  It is an all-around non-money making account....I waste my time, she wastes her time then the owner proofs it. This doctor even has horrible residents who dictate for him. If there was not so much background noise I would do a lot better but they somehow manage to find the most horrible place to do their dictation and go to town with it........surprised I still have hair left.  I told them that if we continue to do this guy (the doctor had decided to stop using the service but changed their mind recently) that I should be paid double (I get the bulk of this twit) and they should charge more to do him due to all the heck he puts us through. ------Can't wait to see what happens with that one!
She got booted because she sang a country song really crappy.
nm
Actually, it is retranscribing from scratch, because the software is so crappy. Same work, sm

less money.

any encouraging words for a newbie with crappy line counts?
Today is my 3rd day of "real" work (not school) and I did 482 lines in 5.5 hours. That averages out to about 87 lines an hour.

How many lines per hour did you average at first? How long did it take to get faster?

I accepted an acute care position to get more experience, but now I'm wondering if I should have gone for a company offering clinic notes accounts ...

Please tell me it gets better!
If you work from a pool, it's when others are leaving you the crappy reports by skipping over the
s
Why would I go backwards? Simple thing is to fire the MTs whose quality is crappy. Weeded out abou
I get paid rather well, but I really should not have to do an MTs job. The point is I DON'T WANT TO TYPE!! Why would I want to be an MT and type ALLL THE TIME?
I felt crappy for 8 days..while coming off carbs..but now feel great..don't forget calories still
for those who are carb sensitive..its a godsend and a lifestyle. I really like this site: http://www.lowcarbluxury.com

there are TONS of wonderful recipes. I made the chicken cordon blue for the whole family and mock mashed taters..yummy!! Obviously not the same but I was a happy camper to have mashed again. Good luck!
MT companies negotiate with the insurance companies until they get what they want

It is strictly up to the agreement between the employer and the insurance company.  Your new employer can tell you what the pre-existing clause is in your new policy.  Some require proof of insurance for the past 12 months.  It may say something like if a diagnosis has not been made NOR treatment received within the last __ months.  Not good when companies negotiate with a pre-existing clause in order to get a lower rate.  Better check with your HR with your new company before doing anything.  It really gets hairy !

You get more working the evening or night shifts and working w/o benefits. And producing like a mad
,
Yep, a good MTSO will get rid of the crappy doctor, not the good MT...sm
unfortunately, there aren't many MTSOs out there who will confront a poor dictator and nip it in the bud to begin with.

In the old days we used to do this all the time. A doctor was put on report and told to shape up and if he didn't he would either be charged more because they had to pay an MT more to do his lousy dictation, or he was always given the option to do his own reports if he wouldn't comply.

Believe it or not, almost every physician my former company did this to straightened up their act became good dictators and found that it was actually less stressful and less time consuming for them too!!

The MTSOs just don't have the guts to do this anymore... and they should. I can make more money on good dictators with a lower line rate than crappy dictators at a higher rate, and would rather have the better dictators and lower rate than the other... it's a win-win for both the MT and MTSO because the MT is making more money per hour and the MTSO gets to pay less for her MTs and make a better profit. I can't believe the MTSOs haven't figured this one out.
Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping.  I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes.  I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this.  Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time.  But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course.  I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot.  My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon).  Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day.  I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change.  Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.
Working holidays? Out shopping in stores where someone IS working

that holiday you refuse to work?  Grocery stores, food joints & seems any store is open on holidays and you expect them to be fully staffed, so why shouldn't we?

Yes, I took off for the first time on Christmas day, in 18 years and it was great, but I worked Christmas eve and this whole past weekend.

Someone has to do it!

sorry you are sick
You should probably try something orally like Pepto or Imodium, doubt the other would work but if you call pharmacist they would know for sure
Yes, you do seem a bit sick. Maybe you should

Small talk is a bridge that connects us to people, and let in what might be a close relationship, whether it be friends, or mate, or whatever.  This is how people break the ice to see whats deeper.

I, like you, became defensive and withdrawn being out of it for so long, and thought everyone was the enemy and out to get me.  Once you change your perspective, you'll realize its not them, its you, you're the one who needs to change to become happy.

The world is not negative, dreary, and awful, that is just how you see it because you're isolated and scared.
