NEW YORK (AP) -- Holocaust survivors said Monday they are through trying to negotiate with the Mormon church over posthumous baptisms of Jews killed in Nazi concentration camps, saying the church has repeatedly violated a 13-year-old agreement barring the practice.

In 1995, Mormons and Jews inked an agreement to limit the circumstances that allow for the proxy baptisms of Holocaust victims. Ending the practice outright was not part of the agreement and would essentially be asking Mormons to alter their beliefs, church Elder Lance B. Wickman said Monday in an interview with reporters in Salt Lake City.

We don't think any faith group has the right to ask another to change its doctrines," Wickman said. "If our work for the dead is properly understood ... it should not be a source of friction to anyone. It's merely a freewill offering."

The Mormon Church was also a major financial backer (I think THE major financial backer) of California Prop 8.

I am fully in favor of any religion observing their own doctrine within the bounds of the law. However, I also believe that their doctrine should be theirs and theirs alone. It cannot be an excuse or a reason for infringing on the civil or religious rights of others.

you're a blind dem. The aboe poster stated his/her thoughts and most of them are true to form. If you don't belive in your country, you are not patriotic. Just because some of us don't believe O is going to do a good job is not a reason to call someone a loon.

I decided, after he was elected, to give him a chance, bvut all I can see is that he is digging us deeper in the hole. I though the bill passed the other day would help some people who were in deep trouble even though they did everything right, would get help...but, again, O is just helping the people who really didn't deserve help. I think you should wake up and start reading a bit more and/or listening a bit more to those who know what is really going on in this country.

A bit of advice... if you have any money in your bank over $100K, you best get it out of there. Although the FDIC is promising a guarantee up to $250K temporarily, the money will not be guaranteed if the country goes broke IMHO.

a needless war and trying to drag Europe into it?  Showing pics of soldiers graves does nothing but bring to mind the effects of waging this unjust war.  How about apologizing for not doing something about our economy until it was too late (which affected the whole world)?

So, you are defending what?  Bush's war on terror/axis of evil?  Torture?  Lying to the American public as well as the UN?  Or perhaps our inadequacy in successfully handling our economy since the start of the Reagan era?

And then saying they can only talk about pets they don't have any more, not their current ones!  Or a car enthusiasts forum where people can only speak of vehicles they used to own, not what they currently drive. 

What's the point in this forum, then, to only talk about the future or the past, not the present?  How ridiculous!

They don't want to debate.  All they want to do is attack and chase away people who don't agree with them.  They don't want liberals on their board, but they refuse to practice what they preach. 

This is the reason the administrator created a conservative and liberal board.  They have their own board, but that's not enough for them.  It's typical of how they must control everyone's thoughts and deeds and even which God they worship.

I just heard a little speech on the news at a rally made by the O. All of a sudden, he seems to be mirroring McC's ideas about regulation, the bail out, etc. I noticed him saying things before (and after the debate) that McC had first campaigned for, but didn't say anything because I really thought I was hearing things.

Now I'm flipping channels to see if I can hear this again.

Don't know of anyone who thinks this country is the great Satan.  Not at all.  The folks I talk to feel this country has its foibles, failings and quirks just like most other nations.  We are not perfect and never will be.  But we shouldn't give up simply because we're not perfect.  Turning a blind eye to this country's problems will solve nothing, though, only perpetuate its problems and make us weaker in the end.

You may see some of us as spouting hatred for this country when in reality it is love, albeit sometimes a tough love.  If you care about your child you want them to improve and become the best they can.  Same with the U.S.

Otherwise, all these Satan =U.S. folks....can you provide compelling statistical evidence for this statement?

Here are your civil rights being stripped to the core.  Excuse me, but I believe that is what our police force is for.  Only this is disguised as taking care of the citizens at home.  We do not need a miliary brigade "specifically" detailed to take care of "our" citizens.  You need to read very carefully what is being said here, folks, and it AIN'T for your own good, even though there will be those who think this is wonderful news!!!

Please pay close attention to the "crowd and traffic control equipment" they will be using on you, which they are sooooo excited about!   These will be your relatives being deployed within our borders not to protect us against intruders but to do just what you see in other countries, when you see their military all over their streets,  monitoring their citizens' every move.... and, of course, there is the brainwashing where some of these military indivdiuals believe they are doing an "honorable" thing and "noble mission".....Mission?  You want a mission?..... find another job besides the one where you are "monitoring" and stripping your citizens of their civil rights. 

Consequence Management Response Force.....I believe is what they call it now.....  consequences of what?  Protests, which is our right, speaking up and out against our government, which is our civil rights......just watch what will be happening if you don't start screaming loudly and long. 

I always wonder what is going on behind the scenes with our government when something "big" starts going on that distracts our attention away from something else.  Well, like they didn't know the Wall Street crowd and all the financial institutions weren't corrupt and crooked as sin.....right!!!  Now seems like a good time to distract you and SUDDENLY it all comes out.   Better keep your eye on your government folks.    There's the real problem!!!!!
