Gulf of Tonkin. (see inside). SM

Yes, we were in Vietnam, but this lie told to the American people was when the Vietnam War actually began.

30-year Anniversary: Tonkin Gulf Lie Launched Vietnam War

Media Beat  Fairness in Reporting

Norman Solomon

Thirty years ago, it all seemed very clear.

American Planes Hit North Vietnam After Second Attack on Our Destroyers; Move Taken to Halt New Aggression, announced a Washington Post headline on Aug. 5, 1964.

That same day, the front page of the New York Times reported: President Johnson has ordered retaliatory action against gunboats and 'certain supporting facilities in North Vietnam' after renewed attacks against American destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin.

But there was no second attack by North Vietnam — no renewed attacks against American destroyers. By reporting official claims as absolute truths, American journalism opened the floodgates for the bloody Vietnam War.

A pattern took hold: continuous government lies passed on by pliant mass media...leading to over 50,000 American deaths and millions of Vietnamese casualties.

The official story was that North Vietnamese torpedo boats launched an unprovoked attack against a U.S. destroyer on routine patrol in the Tonkin Gulf on Aug. 2 — and that North Vietnamese PT boats followed up with a deliberate attack on a pair of U.S. ships two days later.

The truth was very different.

Rather than being on a routine patrol Aug. 2, the U.S. destroyer Maddox was actually engaged in aggressive intelligence-gathering maneuvers — in sync with coordinated attacks on North Vietnam by the South Vietnamese navy and the Laotian air force.

The day before, two attacks on North Vietnam...had taken place, writes scholar Daniel C. Hallin. Those assaults were part of a campaign of increasing military pressure on the North that the United States had been pursuing since early 1964.

On the night of Aug. 4, the Pentagon proclaimed that a second attack by North Vietnamese PT boats had occurred earlier that day in the Tonkin Gulf — a report cited by President Johnson as he went on national TV that evening to announce a momentous escalation in the war: air strikes against North Vietnam.

But Johnson ordered U.S. bombers to retaliate for a North Vietnamese torpedo attack that never happened.

Prior to the U.S. air strikes, top officials in Washington had reason to doubt that any Aug. 4 attack by North Vietnam had occurred. Cables from the U.S. task force commander in the Tonkin Gulf, Captain John J. Herrick, referred to freak weather effects, almost total darkness and an overeager sonarman who was hearing ship's own propeller beat.

One of the Navy pilots flying overhead that night was squadron commander James Stockdale, who gained fame later as a POW and then Ross Perot's vice presidential candidate. I had the best seat in the house to watch that event, recalled Stockdale a few years ago, and our destroyers were just shooting at phantom targets — there were no PT boats there.... There was nothing there but black water and American fire power.

In 1965, Lyndon Johnson commented: For all I know, our Navy was shooting at whales out there.

But Johnson's deceitful speech of Aug. 4, 1964, won accolades from editorial writers. The president, proclaimed the New York Times, went to the American people last night with the somber facts. The Los Angeles Times urged Americans to face the fact that the Communists, by their attack on American vessels in international waters, have themselves escalated the hostilities.

An exhaustive new book, The War Within: America's Battle Over Vietnam, begins with a dramatic account of the Tonkin Gulf incidents. In an interview, author Tom Wells told us that American media described the air strikes that Johnson launched in response as merely `tit for tat' — when in reality they reflected plans the administration had already drawn up for gradually increasing its overt military pressure against the North.

Why such inaccurate news coverage? Wells points to the media's almost exclusive reliance on U.S. government officials as sources of information — as well as reluctance to question official pronouncements on 'national security issues.'

Daniel Hallin's classic book The Uncensored War observes that journalists had a great deal of information available which contradicted the official account [of Tonkin Gulf events]; it simply wasn't used. The day before the first incident, Hanoi had protested the attacks on its territory by Laotian aircraft and South Vietnamese gunboats.

What's more, It was generally known...that `covert' operations against North Vietnam, carried out by South Vietnamese forces with U.S. support and direction, had been going on for some time.

In the absence of independent journalism, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution — the closest thing there ever was to a declaration of war against North Vietnam — sailed through Congress on Aug. 7. (Two courageous senators, Wayne Morse of Oregon and Ernest Gruening of Alaska, provided the only no votes.) The resolution authorized the president to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.

The rest is tragic history.

Nearly three decades later, during the Gulf War, columnist Sydney Schanberg warned journalists not to forget our unquestioning chorus of agreeability when Lyndon Johnson bamboozled us with his fabrication of the Gulf of Tonkin incident.

Schanberg blamed not only the press but also the apparent amnesia of the wider American public.

And he added: We Americans are the ultimate innocents. We are forever desperate to believe that this time the government is telling us the truth.

This appears to be the norm on the whole Gulf Coast

I was in Gulfport, MS before, during and after Katrina.  About a year after, all the rent on the coast went sky high (was paying $425 for an efficiency, raised it to $800).  I was working 7 days a week at two hospitals (many MTs had already left the coast), and I had to leave too, leaving them even more short handed.  There have been many articles regarding the majority of the rebuild on the coast is new casinos and high-end housing.  I have no idea how they expect anyone in the service industries to live there without affordable housing.  You cannot have tourist industry without people that support it - casino workers, fast food folk, maids, low-end hospital jobs.

What drove me nuts is the way they portrayed the people in the media - as if we were all illiterate crackheads.  I worked with many fine people at those hospitals, and it would take pages to descibe their suffering.  It disgusts me how there will always be money to accomodate the disposable income players, while the backbone of the community, hard working, serious, responsible people, were left with a trashed out house with no roof, a mortgage to pay and an insurance company that said they didn't have to give them a dime to rebuild.

Why don't you lay off me for a moment and pray for the people on our gulf coast...
they are far more important than this bickering.
Truman was decent, Johnson was not. sm
Johnson was not even liked by his own party.  In fact, there were many conspiracy theories amont the DEMOCRATS that he had something to do with Kennedy's death.  Kennedy, despite his personal life, was one of the best presidents we ever had.  Truman and Kennedy and even Johnson were real Democrats, not like those of today.
I would suspect that Peggy Johnson
is in for a RUDE awakening.
Truman and Johnson both had sharp minds.

They may not have been polished but they could think on their own and put an entire sentence together all on their own. Truman, I believe, said **The buck stops here.*** Being a war time president, he took full responsibility for what was going on on his watch for which he was much admired, here and abroad. Johnson gave us civil rights. I did not much like Johnson personally but I admired what he did. He said **I have just given the south to the Republicans** when he signed civil rights into law, but, he had the courage of his convictions and did the right thing, control or no control, votes or no votes. I cannot say the same about the current administration. To them the buck stops anywhere but with them and they would do ANYTHING  to keep their party in control, sacrifice a few seats here and there in order to do the right thing, not in this lifetime, not if it means losing control.

Interesting you should mention 2 Democrats as unpolished but (I assume) decent presidents.

It IS important that our president can express himself well. We as a nation look more and more weakened because our leader does not read and  cannot produce a complete sentence to save his soul; and he was elected to be OUR president and the leader of the free world. What does that say about all of us. The more situations deteriorate the more inarticulate he becomes.  America has always been the mediator in the Middle East but this time, the Italians and the French OMG showed up first.  Norway and Greece were the first on the scene to move Americans out of Lebanon. When asked if they were surprised that the first to show up were not Americans, the Americans in Lebanon said ***NO, I mean, look at Katrina. We thought we would be here a long long time.***  I know that many on the right don't care what the world thinks of us but I do and I think it is always best to have allies. This administration just burns bridges. Scary Scary Stuff.

How many funerals did Johnson and Clinton attend.
Answer me that.  It is inappropriate because it seems you will use any tragedy to further your sad and disturbing hate for this president. I get that by reading these boards.
Levi Johnson is not a political figure - take it to the gab board
He is not a political figure and neither is Bristol.

When you don't get your own way or can't argue with anything, you claim others are whining. Typical and embarrassing on your part. You have nothing to argue with to my other post so you say I'm whining????? I'd laugh if it wasn't so pathetic.

This topic is not about Sarah Palin or what she is doing in her job as Governor. It has nothing to do with the state of Alaska, and last I knew she and McCain lost, so you can't be whining about what they are doing on the campaign trail.

Oh here's a news flash for you since you don't know this yet. The elections are over. They ended on 11/04/08. Obama/Biden won and McCain/Palin lost - just so you'll know.

Let me repeat once again...

Levi Johnson...not in politics or a political figure...

Bristol Palin...not in politics or a political figure.

Please take the juvenile remarks about how happy you are that people are suffering to the gab board, and leave this board for valid political discussions. Actually I think you might have more fun on funsites.com/ki-teen or facebook. They have the age group there for this kind of discussion.

Get a grip!
Pretty weak - Johnson was a product of Texas politics,
....just like Bush, Rove, Delay, and a slew of other Suite F-8 Texans now strangling our democracy. Kennedy didn't like him, and Johnson went into fits of rage over his brother, Robert Kennedy, who he never referred to as anything but that son of a b****. Johnson was financed throughout his unstoppable career by Brown & Root (today KBR, a subsidiary of Halliburton). Politically he was a far closer match to the current Republicans both in ideology and political technique (woo them with money, destroy them if they won't cooperate with the agenda, and remember to feed that war machine at every opportunity).

Johnson was a Democrat because 60 years ago that was the Texan standard. But, he paved the way for the current breed of southern Republicans to take control. It's no surprise that Johnson leapt right into Viet Nam or collaborated with people who wished to deceive and manipulate the American people - that is what these people do. Kennedy was the true Democrat - but that just wouldn't do for either Johnson or the rest of his political soulmates who are, of course, Republicans.
So tell me - what political office does Levi Johnson and Bristol Palin hold -sm
Answer: None. What contract did they sign? Answer: None. If they did sign a contract like you said they did, I'd like to see the paper with their signatures on it. This post has nothing to do with the job that Gov. Palin is doing. It has nothing to do with what she is doing in her office, politics, or for the people of Alaska. It is not talking about issues that affect our lives on a daily basis (like skyrocketing taxes, unemployment, people losing homes, etc). This post is about as juvenile as they come. Again you need to take this to the gab board or a website that speaks of such juvenile issues.

Last I knew Sarah Palin was not exploiting anything right now. She has gone back to Alaska and is no longer running for VP for an election that has ended. And if you want to talk about exploiting children lets talk about Biden and that grandson he grabbed up and held onto everytime a camera came into site. It was like watching George with Kuato attached to his chest from the movie Total Recall. Now that there is a crat prop if I ever saw one.

If you hate Palin so much then fine. At least have the decency to pick on her for something she did. Levi Johnson and Bristol Palin do not hold any political office and they did not sign any contracts so that they could be bashed and harrassed the rest of their lives.

You said it "if you are looking for a more intelligent read, I suggest you start reading comic books". So you even admit that your posts are less intelligent than comic books.

I would suggest you and others that want to continue this juvenile discussion there are still issues of Archie and Veronica and Veronica and Betty comic books out there you could read too.

As for non-political issues (i.e. Levi Johnson and Bristol Palin's personal lives) take it to the gab board or a teenager website where you could discuss til your hearts content. Leave this board for political discussions.

And give it a rest. We are sick of non-political issues on this board.
I'm not - NOPE.

Nope...sm
The Billy part was childish but he was right on with his anti-war part of the debate.

Bill was the one who threw his nephew in there and tried to make it like he was being denigrated. Phil simply asked him would he let his children go fight in this war and that's when Bill threw a hissy fit about his nephew.

Remember the factor is a NO SPIN ZONE, but Bill was spinning.

Again, I'll give you the point Billy was childish. I guess that's why he said he would not have Phil back on the show.
Nope!

Nope.
Not overestimating your own ability to debate, be witty and intelligent either, unfortunately.  Those insults are really lame.  I mean they really are.  I can't believe people let you get away with that.
Nope, cuz you are always

Nope I'm not

I'm defending a president who has the courage to do what is right.

God bless GWB.  I'm glad he doesn't cower to lilly-livers like you.

Nope. Not a he. nm

Nope.
My opinion is right. Everyone else is wrong.
Nope..........
If ACORN really was interested in oversight, they would have woke up the first time they were investigated and some of their "followers" indicted for crimes committed. They know this is going on because some of their own workers have spoken out and said they were coerced, threatened, etc., by ACORN heads to go out and do this, and ACORN did what they needed to do to make sure there was no one looking through these false registrations.

It's still happening, so you gonna sit there and tell me they STILL don't now it's going on?
Nope
Steal job...steal food......what's the difference.  Apples=apples, oranges=oranges.
Nope, not mad at you, not at all.
not mad at anyone. Just stating a simple fact...I do not trust Obama and I do not respect him simply because he holds the office. He has to earn both. I do not think that any of the democrats here would do any less if McCain had won the election, and I do not think I would be seeing as many unity posts from democrats if McCain had won, which makes me doubt the sincerity.

However, that is not at issue. This is between the President elect and me...as I said, he is the master of his own destiny and my opinion of him going forward will be crafted by him and him alone...not by his followers or detractors.

:-)
Nope
I blame the repeal of Glass-Steagall, the passage of the Gramm-Leach-Biley Act for creating, in large part, the mess we are in today. Without those occurrences, there would not have been 80% of subprime mortages doled out by entities not covered by CRA.

Combine that with the Ponzi scheme of bundling derivatives, and it brings global economy to its knees.
Nope...(sm)
As pointed out I don't know how many times on this board...HE'S NOT THE PRESIDENT YET!  I think that both parties would agree that it would send a very conflicting message were both Bush and Obama to attend.  That is why he's not going.
Nope I can't
The posters on this board say it all. Some are so in love with the O, others worship the ground he walks on. I'm not putting everyone in the same boat, but for the most part if you read the posts it is a clear love/worship affair they have with the O. I won't categorize you in the same boat because you have shown some good thoughts to your posts, but others do not. And yes it is repulsive.

They do say love is blind and you sure can tell on this board.

I do like your saying though "Good grief gertie". :-)
Nope, she's right on. - nm

Not buying it.  I certainly can expect to raise my children as I see fit w/o the government coming into my home and taking over.  I also can certainly expect, as all parents SHOULD, that the government would have certain regulations and laws about public internet access and pornography.  I should NOT have to sit with my 17-year-old son in the library and hold his hand while he is on the computer doing research just because the government has decided that pornography is a God given right and all can see it.  I certainly have a RIGHT to expect my government to provide decent public environments in such places as libraries for the good of our children.  My parenting skills are my responsibility 100% yes I agree.  However, the government has a RESPONSIBILITY to ensure our children are not exposed to this kind of stuff in places such as this.  WHY??   Because there are freaks out there that think that anything is okay and they don't care about our children and as long as we have to live in this world with people like that, we should, as parents, be able to DEPEND on our government to keep our children safe and unexposed to trash like this.  I mean hey, why dont we just get rid of R rated movies for kids under 17 and then why NOT let any kid of any age go into the adult video stores and do whatever they want.  Why not just show porn shows on public TV?  I mean, isnt it censorship NOT to allow a TV channel air whatever they want?
Nope yourself.
That's how it works, dear.
Nope....that's not what I said...(sm)

I insinuated that that is how we have evolved, into 2 main separate parties.  No, I don't think we have to have 2 parties.  One would be fine so long as decisions that are made are made in the best interest of the people.  That's one thing I like about Obama, his willingness to work with the other side, regardless of whether or not they return the favor.  However, quite frankly, the republican side of the equation is not doing very well.  They have managed to stampede all over the constitution (founding father stuff, btw), take away rights, left us with a deficit when they started with a surplus (while they are calling us the spending party), and completely destroyed any credibility we had worldwide.  What I see in the democratic party IS common sense.

Nope
My mother was a police officer who killed a man, but she didn't have an abortion, so I guess she is okay then right?   What about my dad, grandfather and brother who killed people in the war?  Are they okay too?   Oh and my uncle who is a police officer, he shot and killed people.  Is he okay?   I mean a life is a life, right?
Nope.
But I still have my McCain/Palin sticker on my car.
Nope.......
The quran has many many many words said against (hate) Christians and Jews by Mohammed.

Quran 8:39 “So fight them (Arabic quran says murder them) until there is no more Fitnah (sanity; 'disbelief' [ of/to/by non-Muslims]) and all submit to the religion of Allah alone".

This is speaking of Christians, Jews, and ANYONE who is not Muslim.

Sounds like love doesn't it?

Nope.....LOL.(sm)

The couple that just had the union would also have the same opportunity to practice whatever ceremony that applied to them, and just like the christians, would not be recognized legally without a union.

Look at it like this (and this is probably a bad analogy, but I'll try it anyway):  Everyone has to go to high school (unions), but if they want to go that extra mile to excell they go to college (practice whatever religious beliefs).

And before you guys start, yes, I do know that not everyone goes to high school.

Nope, wrong again! SM
Wrong wrong wrong.  That must make you...wrongle!  A wrong person.  Yassah!
Not true....nope.

Nope we aren't

you can believe that but it just ain't so...

Nope. Not happy yet.

Most, if not all, of YOUR posts are incredibly tasteless, in addition to being rude, crude, offensive and frequently untrue.  Yet, NO liberal has accused you of saying they aren't allowed to speak.

Incredibly tasteless = Not permitted to speak IN WHAT WAY?

Are you agreeing that the poster lied in saying that Army Mom was told she wasn't allowed to speak?

No, of course you're not doing that.

Never mind.

Nope, afraid we can't

Huckabee...? Nope....
from defintion of facism: Fascist movements usually try to retain some supposedly healthy parts of the nation's existing political and social life, but they place more emphasis on creating a new society. In this way fascism is directly opposed to conservatism—the idea that it is best to avoid dramatic social and political change. Instead, fascist movements set out to create a new type of total culture in which values, politics, art, social norms, and economic activity are all part of a single organic national community.

With all due respect, that sounds much more like where liberals are heading than where conservatives are heading...?
Nope, exactly how I meant it
Pretty self explanatory.
Nope, just honest...get over it!

Nope...but I would like your opinion who...
slur an innocent 16-year-old girl in the name of politics. Personally, I think it reeks, but that is just me.
Nope, thrilled.
Most of the reasons you listed are reasons I would want her in office, including against gun control, against gay marriage, drilling in Alaska, and global warming.  And who in the he!! cares what she named her kids.  That's just petty.  I think if the drive-bys and the dems are in such an uproar about this lady, she must have been the perfect choice.
Nope. Sam is so much smarter than you, which is

The facts are coming out from prominent democrats investigating this. Lawyers, judges, investigators. Michael Savage said to one of the investigators "if you were a republican I would not even have you on the show, and say you're just blowing smoke, but you're a democrat". There are plenty of people who want to know the truth. You've got Baracks own grandmother coming out and saying she was in the room in Kenya when he was born. Because she is so proud of him.

People have to pull their heads out of the sand. This election needs to be haulted, the investigation completed, and if he is not legally qualified to run for the office pick another candidate and then we can move on and we would have a little more faith in the system.

How can anyone consider the election legitimate if your own candidate is not.
Nope, he has to prove a lot because
He claims to be born in Hawaii, which he cannot prove yet, and then he was adopted by a Kenhan man, which according to their laws, made him Muslim, and a citizen of Kenya. According to OUR laws, he cannot just come back and claim citizenship. He would have had to go through immigration process all over again and there is no immigration papers to find.

Still waiting for his proof.
