SAN DIEGO -- There's controversy over how the military is transporting the bodies of service members killed overseas, 10News reported.
A local family said fallen soldiers and Marines deserve better and that one would think our war heroes are being transported with dignity, care and respect. It said one would think upon arrival in their hometowns they are greeted with honor. But unfortunately, the family said that is just not the case. Dead heroes are supposed to come home with their coffins draped with the American flag -- greeted by a color guard. But in reality, many are arriving as freight on commercial airliners -- stuffed in the belly of a plane with suitcases and other cargo. John Holley and his wife, Stacey, were stunned when they found out the body of their only child, Matthew John Holley, who died in Iraq last month, would be arriving at Lindbergh Field as freight. Matthew was a medic with the 101st Airborne unit and died on Nov. 15. When someone dies in combat, they need to give them due respect they deserve for (the) sacrifice they made, said John Holley. John and Stacey Holley, who were both in the Army, made some calls, and with the help of U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, Matthew was greeted with honor and respect. Our familiarity with military protocol and things of that sort allowed us to kind of put our foot down -- we're not sure other parents have that same knowledge, said Stacey Holley. The Holleys now want to make sure every fallen hero gets the proper welcome. The bodies of dead service members arrive at Dover Air Force Base. From that point, they are sent to their families on commercial airliners. Reporters from 10News called the Defense Department for an explanation. A representative said she did not know why this is happening. Previous Story: Just read public comments on other websites...republicans are upset...sm and either not voting or voting for Obama. McCain is looking like a true hypocrite with his VP pick. I couldn't stop laughing at all the comments. He made a HUGE mistake with Palin. Funerals Not everyone gets a funeral. Homeless people who die on the street don't get a funeral. People who die with no loved ones don't get a funeral. If you have an abortion, more than likely you didn't want the child, so why would you have an abortion for someone you didn't want or love? Why no funerals for aborted fetuses? answer that one Foxy Again I say, he probably stays away from funerals out of respect for the family... so that along with him does not show up Cindy Sheehan, the pink ladies and who knows who else. Clinton came to OKC after the bombing there but I do not recall seeing him at any soldier funerals, and yes, soldiers died in Somalia and other places under his administration. As I have stated, the President has met with numerous families of fallen soldiers and to me that shows his respect as much as showing up at the funeral. I don't know why you are so upset he showed up at VA Tech. I think it is a wonderful thing that he did. Good grief. Not sure where all this animosity is coming from. He wasn't attending a funeral, he was attending a memorial service. I doubt if he will personally attend any of the victims' funerals. What he did at VA Tech is similar to what I have seen at countless visits to military bases across the country where he personally met with families. Just because you don't see it on mainstream liberal media does not mean it is not happening. As I said, they would rather eat dirt than telecast something like that. I for the life of me cannot figure out why someone would have a problem with the President being there or somehow think it is an affront to fallen soldiers that he did. Shaking my head.... How many funerals did Johnson and Clinton attend. Answer me that. It is inappropriate because it seems you will use any tragedy to further your sad and disturbing hate for this president. I get that by reading these boards. Sheesh....Clinton didn't go to funerals either.... and yes, soldiers died on his watch too (Somalia, Bosnia, etc). I did not see CNN covering flag-draped coffins then. Yes, more have died in Iraq; however, a soldier killed is a soldier killed. Clinton did not go to the funeral of that US serviceman who was killed and then his body dragged behind a Jeep in Somalia. Was that because Clinton felt guilty? Come on!! It is impossible for a President (ANY President) to show up at a private funeral without causing a media circus, and frankly, I would not want Bush there because along with him would come Cindy Sheehan, the pink ladies, the nutso religious group, the ones who hold up signs saying your son died for nothing, yada yada. Maybe THAT is why Bush does not go to funerals. Ya think??? As to stopping the media...what planet to you live on? As if Bush could stop the liberal media from showing anything they want...ala CNN and their terrorist-made sniper video as the terrorists stalked our soldiers. Good grief, new guy!!! The liberal media doesn't give a rat's patootie about who they hurt as they strive to take Bush down....ya think??? And frankly, new guy, do you think the public need to see a flag-draped coffin to know about the death toll in Iraq? I am surprised CNN has not installed a ticker to count them. Get a grip, get a clue, buy a vowel. You and other Bush haters like you just need to admit it. You hate the man, anything connected with the man, to the point that you criticize him for doing a wonderful thing by showing up at Virginia Tech. I think that shows a remarkable lack of human compassion on your part. Yeah...I THINK. That is simply not true. No funerals for fetuses ever. THINK about it. Foolish to argue this point. Gustav will be attended to precisely because it is an election year. The pres and VP know they will damage McCain if they show up -- the country overwhelmingly does not like them or their policies. they don't want to remind people (as if) how closely MCcain adheres to their policies.
Perhaps had she attended the meeting When she voted for Obama, may she missed the part where he repeatedly and emphatically said he would close Gitmo. Of maybe she bought into all the fringe rhetoric calling him a liar, saying he would never live up to his campaign promises, could not be trusted, etc and felt reassured that Gitmo would not be closed. BTW, did you see the video interview of the mother who decided not to attend the meeting...you know, the one Fox tacked on the headline that read, "Mother of USS Cole Victim BLASTS Obama...?" Here's what she said. she is upset. She is disappointed. She is disillusioned. She THINKS she MAY have made the wrong decision. Despite the reporter's best efforts to provoke a stronger, more emotional response from her, she maintained that calm and rational demeanor throughout the interview. No place in the interview did she state she "wished" she hadn't voted for Obama. Sorry. What I saw was a mother in grief. What I did not see was anybody anywhere BLASTING Obama over this decision. I respect her decision not to attend the meeting, but at the same time, I think if she had attended the meeting, she MAY have come away from it feeling reassured. Beyond that, it is WAY too much of a stretch, to conflate this report into such inane assertions as Obama supporters are changing their minds in droves and "finally seeing the light," as the propaganda meisters on this forum have been attempting to do. I voted for Obama. I fully expect he will not march lock-step with me through the next 4 years and do my bidding. I expect to be disillusioned and disappointed along the way. This does not mean that I "wish I hadn't voted for Obama." It means I am no child and don't throw temper tantrums every time I don't get my way and will not be packing up my marbles and going home anytime soon. She actually attended 5 colleges in 6 years and ultimately got her degree from University of Idaho. bone up - he also attended Catholic school so do you think he is the antichrist now? http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/01/22/obama.madrassa/ I'm sorry, but I attended college in upstate NY. 100% of my friends were 100% liberal. sm Not one of them believed in God. That was the only thing that I can go by. He attended only 4 years in this Catholic School in Jakarta, 1st to 5th grade, age 7-11 years, from 1968 till 1972. Can you beat my research? You are reading my mind. Plus, Sen. McCain's MOTHER attended the convention. nm x Exactly. And Barack Obama attended a racist church for 20 years.... and did a fine job of tolerating it. I suppose he is included in that it should not be tolerated by anyone ever? He would still be tolerating it had it not become a campaign issue. Just a fact. Obama attended only 4 years a school in Jakarata, Indonesia, from the 1st to the 4th grade. And this was a Catholic school. At age 11 his mother brought him back to Honolulu, Hawai, where he attended the most prestigious school. His biological father and stepfather were Muslims, his mother was Catholic. Obama was never a practicing Muslim. Among his friends were also Muslim friend. When he marreid Michelle in 1992, he converted to Christianity. I think our President is a Christian. What if McCain hung around terrorists and attended a white supremist church? (sm) I would not vote for him. Abramoff Attended staff-level meetings at Bush White House White House Silent on Abramoff Meetings WASHINGTON, Jan. 18, 2006
(AP) The White House is refusing to reveal details of tainted lobbyist Jack Abramoff's visits with President Bush's staff. Abramoff had a few staff-level meetings at the Bush White House, presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday. But he would not say with whom Abramoff met, which interests he was representing or how he got access to the White House. Since Abramoff pleaded guilty two weeks ago to conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion charges in an influence-peddling scandal, McClellan has told reporters he was checking into Abramoff's meetings. I'm making sure that I have a thorough report back to you on that, he said in his press briefing Jan. 5. And I'll get that to you, hopefully very soon. McClellan said Tuesday that he checked on it at reporters' requests, but wouldn't discuss the private staff-level meetings. We are not going to engage in a fishing expedition, he said. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, along with three other Democratic senators, wrote Bush a letter Tuesday asking for an accounting of Abramoff's personal contacts with Bush administration officials and acts that may have been undertaken at his request. The American people need to be assured that the White House is not for sale, they wrote. McClellan has said Abramoff attended three Hanukkah receptions at the White House, but corrected himself Tuesday to say there were only two _ in 2001 and 2002. McClellan said Bush does not know Abramoff personally, although it's possible the two met at the holiday receptions. Abramoff was one of Bush's top fundraisers, having brought in at least $100,000 for the Bush-Cheney '04 re-election campaign and earning the honorary title pioneer. The campaign took $6,000 of the contributions _ which came directly from Abramoff, his wife and one of the Indian tribes he represented _ and donated it to the American Heart Association. But the campaign has not returned the rest of the money Abramoff raised.
