Any middle-aged MTs out there struggling like me?

I can only wonder why there are not more support groups for the Baby Boomer mid life females who surely are suffering with the fun of the "change."  This is very interesting to say the least!

My Grandmother started walking 5 miles a day when she was 60, she is 97 today and we don't know where the hell she is. ellen

middle-aged MT
What do you consider middle-aged?
I heard *the pt is a middle-aged 36-yr-old woman*...
I'm 43 so I was thinking if 36 is middle aged what am I? This obviously came from a new doc, who was probably pushing 30 himself.
full-figured, middle-aged female (early 40s)
It could have been worse...he could have said I was obese (2 dress sizes over my typical athletic clothing)
I think he has aged well
and I still watch Saturday Night Fever whenever I happen to catch it.   He has put on a little weight, but haven't we all?
i'm sorry if you are struggling.
Maybe you didn't know what your options were, which i tried to outline. I sure don't see where there was any disrespect of you, certainly no more than you disrespected the company that pays (&feeds) you.

also, have you noticed? that like begets like, ie, negative comments bring negative responses. You could try an upbeat attitude.
Still struggling....

Also struggling sm
Seems as if I'm typing in mud. Also, DQS keeps switching me back and forth between accounts like I've never been before. Today, it was between 6 different facilities and they were all mixed up. I had to keep checking the client profiles and had a huge headache - all to get 800 lines where on the old MTs I would have had at least 1200 in the same time with far less stress.
Struggling?
You mean like, POWER surges? Wanting to kill the nearest human?? Crying?? ARGHH!!! I hate this.

I don't have insurance, so on 'natural' hormones. They DO help, but it took about 2-3 months before I could tell a difference. But man, oh man, can I tell if I miss a dose, even by an hour!!!

My menopause isn't age-induced, its radiation-induced. My sister (older) said it took her a year to get past the flashes, but now is dealing with the sleeplessness. Her flashes were 'mild' and only 5-7 a day. Mine are break out in a sweat, throw off clothes, stand in front of a fan flashes, and about 10-15 a day (without the hormones, with them, only 2-3 mild ones a day). I wanna be older or younger ... I'm leaning towards older so this is OVER WITH!!!!!! :)
50 and struggling with it! Because of sm
other health problems cannot take hormones anymore. Gonna try exercising and walking. The tired part is very interesting to say the least. Had hysterectomy at 28, left ovaries but still put me in early menopause in my 30s. Aint it a trip? haha
I think we are all struggling
To some extent or another. And I think your right, a lot of it has to do with the economy. When prices go up on everything by the hour its hard to keep up! I used to love going grocery shopping, alone LOL, but now its just absolutely depressing!
Think this through. 5 hours in a car with two boys aged 2 and 4? I think your husband might be
on the right wavelength here. By the time you get there, you would all be tired and crabby, he has been working 13 days straight so he is probably tired and crabby and then you have to do the reverse trip in just a day? Maybe if the boys were 12 and 14 but at 2 and 4, the 5-hour drive could turn into 7 hours with stops.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. My husband goes fishing with the guys for a week each summer and I think it does us both good. It is like a vacation at home too and we do goofy things like eating cake for dinner just to make it "fun" and not a whine fest for the kids.

Be grateful that you have a husband who obviously has a great job and who is thinking about you (although it might not seem like it).

Take the 5 hours each way and do something fun with the boys instead :)

Signed,

Happily Married but not joined at the hip
We had a local program like that but now it is struggling
Because so many of the jobs have gone home over the years. In the early 1990's the service I worked for nearly always hired our intern(s) because it was such a great program, but when our service was sold, then sold again to a national, everyone was sent home and the college lost another intern slot.

Yet another reason new MTs have trouble finding work!
The first time I saw "middle-aged" female I about died. I was 39!!! nm

care to share? i have been struggling with the same thing. nm

Advice for middle age
Middle age can be a bitch. It can start in the 40's or 50's. Best advice? First check your overall health with healthcare provider. Lose weight if need be. Exercise. Walking is the best. Ever day. I have been taking pilates, and whoah, does that change your body and mind. Makes you lean and long, lithe and strong. Keep the mind stimulated. READ. Read about a variety of subjects. Keep an open mind. Question everything. Hang around young people, learn from them, but keep your dignity and class. Don't try to dress like them. They can learn from use too. Do fun things. LAUGH, a lot. That helps! And best advice - have a circle of girlfriends who support you and can laugh along with you!!
Once was middle class.

I was going to agree with you at first, but....  There is always food on the table, bills are paid.  Have pretty much what I need, but as I get older I care about having a lot less.  Certainly not rich, neither of us will be able to retire any time soon, although had we planned better, we might have been able to.  So I guess that put's us sort of in the middle, huh?

Hardly. We will always have and need a middle class.
The middle class is supporting everyone. This is a socialistic society.

I work and make money to pay for my stuff.

I work and make money to pay for YOUR stuff.

Believe me, there is a need for a middle class in a society like this one. They're just apprehensive to use the "S" word because it sounds too much like *gasp* Communism!
Yes, we will always NEED a middle class,
but don't think it will ALWAYS be there....just look around you.... Maybe when the rich have to take care of the "working poor" we will see a turn-around, but then again maybe they'll just "forget" them.  Don't have much faith in this economy.  The poor are being ripped of any programs that existed just a few years ago.  By the time the "middle class" hits bottom, there will be no help, no kind of any social programs in existance, just the rich and poor.  Which will you be?  Yeah, yeah, I'm pessimistic, but also realistic.
I have a middle easterner that
has a lisp (sounds like his tongue is 4 inches thick) and speed dictates. He is Pakistani. It is indescribable and I sometimes feel like I'm slipping over the sanity brink when I type him.
Flexible is my middle name! nm

Do you have the one that is split once in the middle or (sm)
Thanks for answering. Do you have the one split once in the middle or the one that is split in 3 pieces?
If you don't like the middle man -- get your own accounts
Be the boss, get your own accounts and then you can't yell at us for taking 20 to 30% of the line count to make sure you get paid, the account is happy, TAT is met, we cover all vacations, sudden illnesses, and just not working.   If you don't like working for someone and think that we as owners have it so great, have the guts to go out and get your own accounts and see how you like all the unpaid time you have to put into your business.
Middle Eastern. I don't know why.
I can do the others with no problem at all, but there's something about the vocal tone that I literally cannot hear it properly.
YES SIR BUDDY!! It is time to cut out the middle man.

Most MQ offices are made up of 75% statutory employees which actually means "contractors".

If the majority of transcriptionists were men, this industry would not be running like this.

No man would stand for his client to be telling him "I'll pay you what I want, in a way I want, and I'm not going to tell you how I come up with the amount."  Nope! it would not happen.  And it's ludicrous nationals have gotten away with it so far.  MQ is the biggest perpetrator of this practice, but most nationals do it.

They want us to be "employees" until it comes time for the risks of transcription to be accepted, and then suddenly it is all on the shoulders of the at-home transcriptionist.

I'm sick of it.

The reason a person is a contractor is because they are willing to take on the risks of a job.  But for that risk you pay greatly.  Nationals are not paying greatly.  They are paying us as if we are employees.

As a contractor we should expect to receive 3 x what we would earn an hour as an employee.

Now tell me, are you getting that working at home? didn't think so

middle eastern accents
I had one yesterday for that sang and hummed most of the report. He dictated in a sing-song voice that made me think he was casting some sort of spell. In between words and sentences he would say, ahhhh, ummmmmmm, and then speed ahead with the sing-song again. And it was all in a middle-eastern accent. It was an extra long report and awful. I was so jittery by the time I finally finished.
Convinced the middle class.
xx
do you live in a cave in the middle of no where as well? its not babysitting
We get so little of in the work place, so whats wrong with an occasional 'job well done' when its deserved, if only to make us feel better.  Or even a little personable information, we're not robots.  I've been doing this over 10 years, independent and believe me I could probably edit your reports with my eyes closed my dear.
So you are providing the service we need to cut out the middle man? From doctor to us? nm
:]
What middle class? No longer exists. sm
Just two classes now.
Stopped getting work in the middle of Dec and found a new job.. however he
There are some who work locally to the office.  Has anyone asked them if the office is open?  I live in a different state.  What a royal mess!
Trivia: Do you remember what Moom's middle name is? sm

Unit,  yep, Moon Unit Zappa.

extremely annoying LOL I just did one today where the doc kept using the first name or the middle
None of which was spelled.  Wish they would make up their minds sometimes.  It would be funny (I was getting a little giggle out of it at the time I typed it) if it weren't so frustrasting at the same time.  Have a good one! :)
Need help quick! I am in the middle of baking cupcakes for

tomorrow and i only have 2 eggs and recipe on box calls for 3. Does anyone know what will happen if I use the 2? I live in the country and the store is way too far to get eggs. No neighbors either! :)

What would you do? Go ahead and try it or ditch it altogether? I was in the middle of mixing when I saw I needed 3 eggs!!!! Thanks so much!

America's middle class is disappearing, which (sm)
the country SHOULD be worried about, as we pay most of its bills. The very poor do not, and the rich have too many loopholes.
ERs.. beginning/middle and end. Short story almost.

what do the middle people make per line?
I may be negotiating a contract directly with a radiology business, but I"ve only done independent contractor work up until now.  I'd like to enter into negotiations seeming like I know my way around the block:  what do companies (who hire transcriptionists) tend to make per line?  How would I find that out?
Yep, I am rich, that's why I sitting here typing in the middle of the night!
Of course when I'm done, I'm gonna hop in the limo and have Jeeves take me to NYC to breakfast and get my hair and nails done.  Wanna go?  There's room in the back.  I mean, it is a limo!
In other words, pay no attention to that big ole elephant sitting in the middle of MQ
lawsuit and SEC mess and just keep transcribing.  Now that's upbeat.  Don't believe your lying eyes and everyone else is wrong about MQ but you.
YES my pitbull is doing this constantly. Was in the middle of an HUGE file and
i didn't pay attention to where i was. She came under the desk (she is scared of EVERYTHING) and sat on it. I got her out and started listening and I was like OH CRAP ... had to figure out where i was!!
Are you hourly? Benefits? Pay? East/West/middle?nm

sounds like its the corp money grubbing middle men
If we could get rid of them (do not know if that is possible at this point), we would have happier, higher paid MTs, and better quality work for the hospitals.  What they must think of us with the quality of work they are seeing.  IF only they knew we are backed up against the wall with everything based on production, lowered pay rates, AND limiting reports being sent to QA.  Everyone is losing here.
My middle schooler is being taught the changes in typing class.

Type Matrix keyboard has backspace key in middle- sm

The TypeMatrix keyboard is split down the middle, one split, with backspace keys (two of them) in the middle.  It is a vertically aligned keyboard, so if you can imagine each hand has its own keys and therefore its own backspace key.  You can see it at www.typematrix.com

I cannot recommend this keyboard enough (no, I don’t work for them)...I have had it for several years and it is amazing...I have reduced the pain and stress in my hands and wrists by 95%....I love it!
