My company forced us to do all accounts for one hospital. SM

Posted By: Susu on 2005-08-16
In Reply to: I would say it depends on who you are working for. If they sm - Well

They are a group of five hospitals. Those of us who said we did not want to do all five, suddenly had our primary out of work, because the other MT's were doing OUR account. That is how things are now. It seems to be the name of the game.

I get 14 cpl with my hospital accounts and

I pay my subcontractor 11 cents a line.  So no, I don't make a huge profit from the work she does, and maybe I don't make any at all with all things considered, but then I've always figured that my income comes from what I transcribe myself.  I know you can't run a big business like that, but as a small business with just a contractor or two, it works for me.

I also work for a small national to fill in when my own accounts are slow and I get 10.5 cpl there.

V.A. hospital accounts
DO require a background check. At least the ones I have worked on.
Local Hospital Accounts

I actually work for a Hospital Transcription Dept. My advice is to ask for the supervisor of transcription or Director as they usually have one or the other.

I actually had a person(who I know was from an outsourcing company from overseas) called and aske me if we were doing any outsourcing. We told her we were not interested, but I actually do send some out to an outsourcing company already. Just wasn't going to do that.

Alot of hospitals around where I live usually are small and have in house transcriptionists. The only reason we have our outsourcing is for people on vacation and when some emergency comes up and we fall short.

local hospital accounts
do any of you IC people have any tips on what is the best approach on how to find out info on who does transcription for local hospitals?  Thanks!
Question about working on Hospital accounts
I have over 5 years of experience unfortunately it is all clinic experience. Are there any companies that will hire a Transcriptionist with this much experience but not in the Acute Care field? I really would like to start doing those types of transcription. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.
I work for eTransPlus, hospital accounts, and QA is great - nm

Do not name accounts at any company. (SM)
I have deleted posts already because of this. Banning will be the next step.

Accounts are not to be named.
Accounts or company?
Accounts or company?
No not a company, IC with own accounts. nm

Company or own accounts?
If you are subcontracting to a company, just let them know well enough ahead of time that you will be gone.  I always gave 2 to 4 weeks or if I knew farther than that and if it was for a week or longer, just dropped them an E-mail or note so that they could make sure that they had coverage for your accounts.  Just be considerate.  Now if they are your own accounts, they will want to know in advance and if you will have someone cover for you.   My accounts won't allow me to have anyone cover if it is less than 5 days as they say it is not worth it as the people don't know the account, etc.  So I come back to tapes galore and wonder why I took off in the first place.   Again, just be considerate so that they can get the coverage they need to keep the account happy.
Do you have your own accounts or do you work for a company?

What company has Radnet accounts? It is my favorite!
Our hospital just went to voice recognition and I am looking for a company that uses RadNet as we have been given 30 days notice that we will no longer be needed.
Are you with a certain company or is this in general? Own accounts? Ask your QA if you work

does anyone know of a company/hospital.....
that will pay strictly hourly with or without incentives?  all this "running out of work", and "unable to make line counts" deal really worries me. TIA
Hospital account (National company). nm

My hospital sends their work to a company
The reason this person is sticking up for the offshoring of American work is that she is one of the people taking our work away.
It would certainly depend on that company's/hospital's HR policies. nm

58, AHP/self-taught, trained at hospital 5 years, now with 2 of my own accounts for 10 years, employ
Also worn out 2 keyboards in 4 years. I will never retire. DH will come home some day from work and I'll be slumped over my keyboard. I put in 14 hours a day 7 days a week.
I am curious as to why you aren't going with the company the hospital is outsourcing too??
nm

I would like to get on with the hospital or possibly the company who handles their transcription.
I have been considering working locally instead of for a national or switching to another company from the company I currently work for. Since losing my initial primary account and having to switch to another account, my income has declined and it doesn't appear to be getting any better. Not sure why, it is not from my lack of working. I just can't seem to make the counts on this new account as I could on my previous account. I now do some editing on top of my transcription due to time restraints I cannot put in any more hours than I already do. Thanks for the input. My husband recently started working at this particular hospital. I am hoping he will be able to find out for me but no luck yet.
Depends on what kind of hospital? Large urban hospital or small community hospital? SM

Also, is it a large teaching hospital? If so you have to consider there will be A LOT of different residents dictating, usually a lot of ESLs at teaching hospitals, and the residents rotate out and new ones rotate in every summer. So you can't expect to get the same dictators and build up your macros because the dictators change all the time.

I would say 9 cpl would be a pretty good offer for a small to medium community hospital where you will be doing the same dictators on a daily basis.  But for bigger, urban or teaching hospitals I would want at least 12 to 15 cpl.

Forced into it.
A company I was with for a long time switched over to a VR system. It takes some getting used to but I love it.
Dictators like that should be forced to
either type their own reports or use VR. See how they like their own mess.
If forced to transcribe the slang, then
satting would be correct. The two consonants after the vowel make the vowel short. In the dictation, "satting" (slang for saturating) is pronounced with a short "a" so that is how it should be transcribed. Typing only one "t" would make the vowel long. However, as at least one person has already pointed out, "satting" is slang and is not proper transcription style regardless of who demands it be typed that way.
I was forced to work with some at one point -
They all took and passed - granted these were a little above average from the work I saw - my guess is there is a lot of help - probably even some "cheating" - I mean - how does AAMT verify who that is half a world away - no SS#, etc
They've forced many of our ERs to shut down
a regular doctor's office. So the few that are left are full to bursting. Once when I had a medical emergency, the ambulance couldn't take me to the closest ER because they had no room, instead we drove FOREVER to a far-away hospital, and still I had to wait a long time out in the hallway. Right now I would say 80% of the people being treated on the account I type for are Mexican and don't speak English. So the hospital has to pay for full-time, professional translators to accompany these people at office visits. And it's no surprise that a large number of them came here illegally.
I suspect employers are being forced to care. SM
Since it's a new platform, it's a new problem that probably a lot of companies are just waking up to. My sympathies for people who find themselves effectively "forced" to use it as it apparently is now.

With serious compatibility issues with common brands of the Expanders that have become vital to so many of us, at this point I would not apply to a company using it, and I suspect few other good experienced transcriptionists reading about it would either. This seems such a grave flaw that it will have to be repaired, or this platform will end up a dead end used by only a few institutions.

How about contacting the company that developed the platform directly for answers and fixes? Also the developer of your own expander, who must be well aware of the issues Chartscript raises for them. The ShortHand tech guy (not my own MTSO techs!) fixed me up promptly when I was put on eScription and developed glitches. Best wishes with this.
I do not work hard every day to support fools, yet I am forced to by this
I do NOT, DO NOT, care about people who put themselves in harm's way in order to brag that they have a 9-room house on the beach.
Forced to conform? It's a holiday show with music. sm
They're not apparently being asked to stand up and deny Jesus, for heaven's sake.

If it's a public school and public money goes to the school, my feeling is they'd BETTER be inclusive. If people's feelings get hurt because they're a majority and they just can't stand to have any of the minorities mentioned, tough.
I hope this proves to all MTSOs who say they are forced to lower their rates that if MQ can get 20,
All they need to do is stick to their guns. Our rates should not be falling. MQ does not even have the good quality that half of these other services do.
I used to get hand and wrist pain. I still do if I'm forced to use a standard keyboard.
I bought an ergonomic keyboard and use a telescoping keyboard drawer so I can prop the side of the board that's closest to me up in the air.  That forces my wrists into the proper position and spreads my hands apart.  It works wonders.  I thought I would have to quit MT before ever really getting started, but I'm able to work pretty much fulltime now.
Walmart is good. The regular supermarkets are going to be forced to compete.
It all works for the good of the consumer.
Forced to work scheduled shifts..no flexibilty..what gives??? So frustrated.

I started MT two years ago for a medical clinic of about 100 doctors.  I am now working at home.  I get paid hourly 10.50/hour.  My employer will NOT let us work flexible shifts.  I have to work a standard 8 hour shift with a one-hour lunch break that is unpaid.

I got into this field because I wanted to work from home and have FLEXIBILITY.  I have a toddler under the age of 4 and when I interviewed and shared my reasons for wanting to work at home (my children) I was told I was a "great fit" and then I get in my home and am told there is ZERO flexibiity and I have to work 8 hours straight just like in-house people!  This is extremely stressful for me having a small child and I don't make enough money to afford daycare.

I started working with Medquist part-time for extra money and AGAIN I was told I would have to work a set shift, with no flexibility.

Where are the jobs that you guys have where I can work my own hours?  Sitting here typing 8 hours straight everyday with a demanding toddler is starting to wear on me, but I need this job badly.

What gives? I thought the nature of working at home with MT is flexiblity and every job I've applied for in MT has given me NONE.

How about zillions of accounts. MQ has these accounts so overloaded even the new hires dont have any
work. I would love to read some of these reports and then they expect perfect QA and no blanks. Did they lose their minds completely.
The accounts are old and she keeps her accounts TRUSTING she hired the right MTs
who if in doubt will ask questions regarding reports. No one can find all mistakes in all reports and that is human to have a report with perhaps a typo. You think anyone reads through all the reports of a national company before they get to the hospital? Not a chance. Some random QA is supposed to correct all mistakes? Not hardly. Doctors/dictators make mistakes too. We all do. So do QA people. So the thing is this person hires good people who are trustworthy, the hospital likes the way she does their account and life goes on quite nicely w/o hovering editors/QA people. BTW, who QAs the QA people on your accounts. Ever wonder?
supposed to be, after people lose their jobs, they are forced to take part-time, lower-paying jobs..
with little to no benefits. service jobs. where are you going to work in a few years, when Medical Transcription is replaced by technology? McDonald's, Walmart? you really going to like that?
Not all accounts are good accounts. One
That should not be the case. Sounds like you need new accountant with strong knowledge of IC deduction.  We save a several thousand on what we pay in taxes based on what I can deduct as at home IC, $2000 off the top for what I pay my child to help with office chores, as an example.  The measly 7.xx% I pay that an employer would pay is well worth my independence in being my own boss.
Hospital. I wish I'd never left my hospital job.
They'll only take me back if I start off working nights and weekends again at the bottom of the totem pole.
If you work for a hospital - how come no one from the hospital
called you?? Were they in the dark, as well?? How sad, that no one in your hospital communicates with the at home staff.
What Company is This? I have been hired by a company that is sending a foot pedal.. Don't want t
.
The company cutting cpl, the company stopping paying for headers
:{
Good of the company? As IC, I am my own company. Not my problem if she has problems as long as I do
:P
Accepted a job with a new company, gave two weeks notice to my old company..

Old company, let me go before two weeks was up.  New company, said they were having trouble getting me set up and my equipment ready, but they would pay me while I waited.  It's been a month, still no check from new company even though I was told it was "in the mail."  I have no income and am at a loss.

I have a signed offer letter from the new company, contracts, etc.  I applied for unemployment, but old company is saying I quit and technically I am currently employed with the new company!  New company is not returning calls or answering email.

What should I do!?!?!?!

I started sending my resume out today, but the process of getting a new job will take at least two weeks and I need money now to catch up on what I'm behind!

You don't want to work for this company. Call your current company and
tell them that you have decided against the new position and tell them that you would like to stay. It is cheaper for them to let you stay than to train someone new. A company who could be so tacky as the one you just spoke of is one you do not want to work for. You can rescind your resignation. If you are a good MT, they will be glad you did.
With my company, ICs use their own emails, employees have company email.

....3 months later my old company rehired me; can you return to your 1st company?
nm
Local radiology company, not transcription company
who has only 5 transcriptionists and are not hiring at this moment. We all work at home and get great benefits, no insurance out of pocket and 22 days paid vacation in the first year, after that it goes up. I feel very fortunate to have found them, but again I chose them because they did not do production, so now that they are, I'm a little disappointed.
I think it varies greatly from company to company...sm
I was hired five months ago by a national straight out of school at 8 cpl. I think it just depends on your knowledge level and ability, and of course, what the company is willing to pay.
i think it varies from company to company and/or location
