Turning numbering on and off for lists

Does anyone know the keystroke commands or if they even exist to turn numbering off and on for lists?  I hate having to use the mouse to point at the menu and going that route!

Here's what I do for the numbering -sm
I got this from another board awhile ago and saved it. I assigned the hot key of ALT+; so I don't have to take my hands off. When I get to #2, I just do ALT and semicolon and the lists goes to the left margin. Here it is:

Record this simple macro and assign it to a hot key:

1. Type #1 and any text you want to, then press Enter.

2. Immediately after #2 appears in your list, start the macro recorder, press the up arrow key, then press Alt + Shift + left arrow and your list will demote to the left margin.

3. Press the down arrow key and your cursor is in place for the second line of text.

4. Stop recording.

When typing lists, run the macro when you get to #2.
numbering

to find how to do this in Word, just type in numbering where you ask for help. It gives a simple good explanation how to do it.

You just type 1 and tab or space over. Type in your text and enter. it should automatically come up. If it does not, then go to tools menu, click autoformat as you type, select automatic bulleted list or automatic numbered lists, Make sure the box is checked.  To finish your list, ENTER twice or press backspace to delete the last bullet or number in the list. It works. I tried it to be sure.

This would not work well as some people come in way before their appointment and some show up 2 minutes before and have to get back to work, so the early bird would have the other one's number. What about the local pharmacy where they holler out your name and in my case, yelled, "We're almost out of Norvasc but will give you enough to get you over the next few days." Good thing it wasn't something more personal! This privacy stuff is a long road to hoe before it gets straightened out. Same thing with blood work, no privacy at all in getting your info into the computer, yell out your name, ask address, tel. #, age, it's disgusting. The whole room knows why you're getting blood or urine tested. Geez.
Numbering reply
You need to click on Format, then click on bullets and numnbering, then click on outline numbering and you can reset the numbers and alphabet letters any way you want to.
Word numbering
Hi:  Try opening Word, Edit and then click on undo bullets and numbering to see if this may be a simple way to stop this.  I have Windows XP and I just tried this and it worked.  Good luck.
The only problem with that is when you are listing and numbering them, even

MS Word Auto Numbering
If by indenting, you mean making a list and having it indented toward the right, you need to turn on the autonumbering options in Word.  Do this by opening Word, go to tools, autocorrect.  Click on the tab autoformat as you type.  Check ON automatic numbered lists.  Now click on the tab Autoformat and check ON lists, say OK at the bottom.  Close Word and open it again.  When you type 1. and then some text and hit enter aftward, it should now set up your list for you.  Make sure that if you are transcribing, the account allows autonumbering, most don't.  Hope this helps!
Help with numbering/indents in Word/EXText

Any of you computer smarties out there who can help me out?  I'm new to Word Client and EXText and I'm trying to figure out the least maddening way to set up my lists and numbers.  I already have a great macro for when they dictate 1., 2., 3., etc. so no problem there.  My problem comes in when some of these guys want 1. and then a., b. c.  They want it to be set up like this (hope it comes out right)

1.   text text text

      a.   Text

      b.   Text

2.  Text

      a.  Text.

I can get my a. b. c. macro to look right when I type it as a stand alone macro, but if I have done my 1.2.3. macro and then try to do the a.b.c. underneath the 1, then it scoots the a.  waaaay too far over to the right, to where it is under the second word of the text, not lined up right under the first letter of the text under 1.  Does anyone know of a way to do this that doesn't involve a bunch of time and extra key strokes?  Hope this makes sense trying to explain it, I'm waiting on deliverye of my Word For Dummies book but then had the thought that I have seen computer-related questions answered here before and thought I would give it a shot.  TIA.

on ExText numbering, and subheadings w/indent
after going in and setting up for numbers what I have to do and I have found no other way.

when doctor saysS1. then subset A:
1. Hyperlipidemia.
A.
B.
2. Hypertension.
3.
what you have to do is type 1. what you want afterward (hyperlipidemia), hit enter, you will get 2 lined up under 1., back up, delete it, space to under the h, type A. xxxx, enter, it will put a b under a, then if he say number 2, enter, it will type a c, back space through it and line up under 1 for the #2, type what he says (hyperlipidemia), enter and it will type 3 under the 2.

that is the only way I have found to have the indented numbers and subheadings.

Sorry no more help, but when you get used to it it gets faster. If someone has an easier way I am all ears.
Microsoft Word question (numbering)
I started with a new company today.  Anyway, I got my review back.  It said I need to turn off my numbering macro, the numbers should be flush left.  Well, no matter what I do it always indents.  I am working with Word 2000.  I tried the help menu which did not help.  How do you make it not indent the numbers?  TIA.
Every version of Word seems to do auto numbering differently. sm
The last two versions have a number list style that will keep numbers at the left margin and do the hanging indent automatically. Alt-Shift-left arrow will take your list back to the left margin if you don't use the style but want to use automatic numbering.
Change the alignment to Right in the Bullets & Numbering dialog box.

Basically formatting, how to type the headings, numbering, etc...sm
Are headings capitalized or followed with a colon?

No, not offended and not turning on you sm
I think some of us are frustrated and concerned for you because we know it will happen again--and there's nothing we can do.

We also see the things that you're saying and see them as typical problematic statements, classical of someone who's being abused and will be abused again.

Statements like these:

"I have neglected to mention that when he is calm, he is actually okay." What? What difference does that make? He's probably very sweet and wonderful when he's not hitting you, yes.

and

"The incident two weeks ago was because I was forcing a trip to see my daughter's family." In other words, you caused it, right? That's so typical of an abused woman. "I made him mad" or "I egged him on." See, we on this board read things like this and see what you're not seeing, which is why we are SCARED for you and urging you firmly to see them. You're interpreting this as turning on you or that we're offended. No -- we are seeing something and trying to get you to see it, and really worried that you're not. And yes, frustrated that you're going to live with this man under the same roof while you try counseling and religion.
things are turning around?

I have some relatively good news fellow transcriptionists!  I am seeing a change for us in small doses.  Seems several of the larger hospitals who have outsourced to "companies" are now bringing back in the MT and paying decent wages with all benefits.  Look around, they are popping up everywhere.  I know of several "compaines" that I have worked part time for that the hospitals are dropping like flies because of various reasons, but the truth of the matter is that it is always better to have regular typists working for the same doctors as we "learn their lingo" and know how to baby them, which in a nutshell is what gives us the job security that we look for.  I work for a hospital as an IC that now is having big problems because they dont want to give raises or benefits(therefore people are quitting), but they are finding out very fast that no one else can or wants to do their work.  I can't wait for them to try the offshore companies.. will just be too rich...  As fussy as my group of doctors are, well, I smell raise on the horizon and benefits to boot.  they will just have to fall flat on the ground before they can walk the walk!!

Just remember, what goes around comes around.  I have a new job with a hosptial that has made me full employee and decent wage.  I am so looking forward to seeing this change that has been long coming.

I am just glad that it really is starting to turn around.  Just goes to show these offshore cheaper prices are not being "bought" for long by many.   I know of one hospital that had outsorced all their work, after a while (maybe a couple of years) they found that it was CHEAPER to bring the Transcriptionist back in and train to send home with all equipment and benefits and really decent pay, I am talking more than what any "company" has ever offered me, except for opt notes.. Just too cool.  I am so excited..

Will keep you posted as I start my new job - really belonging again!  :)

Maybe you are accidentally turning it
on by hitting Ctrl-B or a combination of keys to turn it on. I am always accidentally making words all CAPS.
Have you tried turning it off and then back on? nm

Underscoring lists......sm

I don't think there is any hard and fast rule regarding this.  Your client obviously isn't BOS obsessed as "any" underscoring in a list is a no no.  If underscoring is an account specific rule, I personally would underscore the title only.  The easiest solution is to check some previous reports and just follow suit, or better yet .. ask.

I am not sure about the waiting lists here yet,
but I do know that the program only takes so many students. That will probably be another thing I will have to factor in too. Great tip on taking the electives while waiting though. I am only going for the associate's degree as well. Are you interested in going into psych too?
You don't need to close Word after checking the auto numbering option. It works right away. nm

turning off computer at night

I leave mine on -- just do a "control, Alt, delete" and "log off" instead of shut down.  It works fine.  I have to enter my password the next day, but thats okay.

I've heard the machine will not last as long if it's turned off every night.

Yes, turning Celine OFF works even better! LOL

He will be turning on the charm 100%. Don't listen to it. sm
And you've never tried God as an option before? Well, if you wish, tell him to get some God on his own while you and your children are safe someplace else.

You're stoked right now, which is great, but don't let it fizzle out with husband's pleas and lack of abuse in the meantime. It WILL happen again if you stay. Anybody who knows anything about abuse will tell you that. The center you contacted will tell you that, too. Listen to the experts.

Bravo on actually contacting your parents and Swan. However, you said they can hide you out if you actually need to go. Hello? You actually need to go. Now. You were just hit 2 weeks ago. You're feeling in control and all, but it WILL happen again. Yes, you are in danger. Your husband is scared right now. He senses the loss of control. However, this is a cycle. When you stay, and things get a bit more distant, they'll resume some sort of normalcy. It'll build up, and he'll blow. What will happen next? You know you've got someone who has abused you as recently as 2 WEEKS ago, and you say you're not in danger and you're willing to let your CHILDREN LIVE under the same roof as someone who WILL eventually blow again, and maybe hurt them next time?

It's not just about being hid out when (not if) things get ugly again. You need to work toward a permanent plan, not just a crisis plan. There are other places besides this one you've called, ones who can give you some counseling and advice on how to leave and make it on your own with your children.

I wish you would listen and leave, but I have a feeling you're going to wait til next time. Do you know it takes women an average of SEVEN times leaving their abusive spouses before they finally leave for good? How many times will you let it take you? And what will be the cost to you and your children before you finally "get it?"
Turning the control off did the trick. sm

I don't even need the convertor now.  The plug-in downloaded and my GP plays the dvf files just fine.  Wow!!!  I can't thank you enough.

Thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!

It seems turning that off sorta turns it into XP. LOL! nm

You might also try turning off the suggestion window SM
or whatever it is you have for a while. I use Shorthand, but it's pretty much the same thing. That way you could give yourself a list of often-used abbreviations to memorize and get very comfortable with and/or a rule that tells you what a lot of your abbreviations are going to be. As you get comfortable with those few, you'll end up loving them and wanting MORE, MORE, MORE. With that attitude, you can turn the window back on or give yourself yet another list and another rule or two to get used to.

Just think, if you only used abbreciations for the words "the patient" (tp or ?), "hydrochlorothiazide" (hycx or ?), and "blood pressure" (bp or ?) you'd never type those three out again and would be saving that much time with each of them. Start small and unspook yourself.
Rad reports with dem info lists
My first remote job typing rad reports was for a local agency who provided such a great interface with the hospital, all I had to do was put in the job # from the dictaphone and all fields would fill in, then go right to typing in WP using all my short-cut keys. A lot of the reports were short, some long, and I wound up making really good $ that way for years. Then they went to VR (sigh). That's the way to go if you can get it; I won't put in multiple steps I'm not paid to to put in.   Good luck.

Expander that lists next to cursor
I would like to know if there is an Expander out there that will actually list the expansion next to our cursors while we type so we do not have to look down at the bottom of the monitor to see the expansion.  I know if the expansions popped up in front of me I would use them more.  Just curious
Numbered lists in MS Word... How do you
Make the list NOT indent? I want it to stay flush on the right with the rest of the paragraphs? I feel like this should be something easy and I am just spacing out!
Portability of short-cut lists

You may want to get an Expander program like ShortHand or Instant Text. They allow you to use your short-cut list(s) in any application you type in, and you will never have to redo your list(s) when you change accounts or company platforms.

Portability of abbreviation lists

Your question raises the portability of abbreviation lists when you use different trascription platforms.

Each platform offers a utility where you can create your list of abbreviations, but you don't want to start over and over each time you change platforms.
The solution to this problem is that EITHER these platforms provide you with another utility that lets you convert your list to their format OR you invest in an Expander software like ShortHand or Instant Text that let you use your list practically on all platforms.
With Instant Text you can import your AutoCorrect with a few clicks and then you can use it with EMDAT or any other platform.
Your time is worth money. You may want to evaluate how much it is worth by calculating how much time it takes to redo your list.

I always defer to Dorland's, which lists
curet as the preferred spelling.  Neither is incorrect.  Curette is more characters and I supposed over years and years that could add up.  Maybe I should switch to curette.
Where did you find the lists for Autotext?
I did not see any lists for autotext for free or ones that could be ordered.  Where did you find them?  Can you give me a link?  Thanks

How to quickly number med lists?
What is the quickest way to number a medication list? We have to number all of a patient's medications in a vertical list (voice recognition). - very time consuming - slowing me down. Any MT's found a fast way to number medications and put in a straight list on left margin QUICKLY? This is ridiculous. The voice recognition correctly or incorrectly gives the medications, but it is very slow numbering them and putting them in a vertical list -and we are required to do that. Any help would be appreciated!

It just seems like they wanted me to work for nothing to clean up ASR reports.  It was pitiful what they wanted, considering what they needed me to clean up.  I could have typed it faster and better using my word expanders.

Once you are real good, you can think about supper, lists,
I know that sounds nonproductive and error prone, but it's entirely doable. The work can take up your limbic system, and your upper cortex can solve the problems of the world. I can read notices on my cubby wall, and never falter typing, and get it perfectly right.
AOL lists today that MT is one of highest WAH jobs!!

Look at the model they used...that's sure what the average MT looks like!  LOL

Make your expander lists portable

The esp file can be saved as mentioned.
The next step is to make it work in Bayscribe. One solution is to use Instant Text and import your esp file. Once your Expander file is an Instant Text glossary, it is portable and you can use it on any MTSO transcription platform.

Yes, I bought it and you can either buy the lists for Instant Text

or ShortHand I believe, when you buy it, it gives you the option of what word Expander you want to use it with.  Unfortunately, I never did use it.  First of all, I couldn't get used to it and the rules with how to bring up a word.  I think it was something like if a word is 4 or more letters, use the first 2 letters to bring it up, and then another rule if the word is 5 or more letters, bring up the first and then last letter of the word...so on and so on.  I have found that I have my own way of shortcuts and can't use someone's else's method.  Now I just use Shorthand and auto text in Emdat, and that' s working for me.  It might work for you, just in order to get the full  benefit, you have to follow his rules for it, and that is where my mind couldn't go.

Are you turning the volume using the home typist icon
or your regular volume control icon on the tool bar?

I have had that problem with some whispering dictators, so I mute the program itself just for that dictator.

It's a shame if you can't use it. I get a real rhythm going and my day just flies. I don't think I can type without it now.
I hear ya. I'm a natural blonde turning white sm

At first the box stuff worked pretty good. Now I have a huge "skunk stripe" on the left side of my forehead and I'm starting to grow another "skunk stripe" on the left side.

After a while the box stuff only calms down the different texture of the white stuff for a few weeks so if you wear a few bangs, you need to cut them to match after dying. 3 weeks later the bangs with the white stuff are suddenly a good half inch shorter again.

Needless to say, for the time being I have the "off the forehead"  look that makes my head look like two breakdown lanes on a highway.

I'm saving my money. The initial shock for the "makeover" is scary, but my 2 sisters told me to go for it as the upkeep isn't too bad at all. They would both be snow white in their late 40's if it weren't for visits to the salon.

I'm headed in the same direction and I'm early 40's. My husband, who went white by 38, told me to just go natural.

I told him to kiss my natural behind.

Enumerated lists and underlining for headings in exam
I was wondering if any of you can help me, and possibly even give me a reference, regarding enumerated lists, specifially in an exam. Example is:

1. General Comments:

2. Response to Medication:

3. Medication Compliance:

Etc.

What I am wondering is the clinic likes the section to be underscored (i.e., General Comments); however, should the underscore include the number or just the words titling that section? I have been doing the latter; however, the person I share the account with underlines both the number and title.

Thanks for your help.
