Those credentials for teachers in public school are NOT the norm...
At my daughter's school when she was in 3rd grade she showed me her final spelling test.  The list contained the words:  You, me, and two, among other similar ones.  My daughter was in the gifted program, and those were her final spelling words in preparation for 4th grade!!  We do NOT have public school teachers with PhD degrees in anything.  They're lucky they have a Bachelor's.  I have a Bachelor's and consider myself quite capable of teaching.  Believe me - all schools are NOT created equal.
sorry, but this isn't grade school
When you get out of grade school and become an MT, try following the MT Book of Style, which contains the guidelines for this profession - whether you like it or not.
Makes you wonder how they passed grade school grammar. No it is not acceptable.
I agree 100%.
I was 15, in 10th grade, getting ready to go to school I guess - a bit hard to remember - nm

My daughter already started 1st grade - year-round school. Yippee! (nm)

I'm embarassed to even work with you all. Sound like a bunch of grade school delinquents. Grow u

So disrespectful, and just plain embarassing.  You get whatever you desire, and based on your "class" on the boards, you all are getting it.  I thank God literally that I don't have to share office space with you "women". A priceless blessing.

I was always told (old school doc talk here)

The doc's "words of wisdom" were that a small child's body knows when to rid itself of whatever it needs to get rid of and if you give a small child something like Pepto Bismol to try and stop the vomiting, you are only preventing them from ridding their systems of what they need to get rid of.  Makes sense.

Do look for signs of dehydration. Otherwise, get him a bowl and clean up the excess.

Hope he feels better.

because they know new grads want 6-8 cpl just like they were told in school
and besides, like I said, takes too much time. So you take on a newbie, train them while paying them 2 cpl.   Then they get their "experience" then they move on to greener pastures. Meanwhile the MT in India will still do it for 2 cpl, only now they are trained... get it?
Me, too. I told my kids that since they're not in school and I'm working two jobs
just to try to keep the utilities on, they get to do chores. Don't even get me started on holiday stress. My extended family sent me gift cards, so I'm using those to buy for the kids. I even offered to pay them $5 an hour for cleaning so they'd have Christmas money. Instead, what are they doing? Watching TV in their pajamas still. That's OK. I'm about to go unplug all the electronics in the house and give them a big chore list with NO pay.
POLL: Home School vs. Charter School vs. Public School vs. Priv ate School...
Pros and cons of each too. I have two little ones that will be starting school soon and I would like opinions on all. Thanks in advance! :)
Einstein did not believe in religion.

Hey Einstein, you'd be out of a job with your plan. SM
Sorry to break the bad news, but without QA for a week, clients would dump the services once they saw the work coming in from some of "the many unqualified persons who categorize themselves as skilled MTs." Over the years, I would say the ratio is about one fair to excellent Transcriptionist to every 50. Most QA personnel are in their positions for a reason -- it's called years of experience in the MT field and emphasis on quality work. Those who complain about QA on a regular basis should produce cleaner more accurate work, learn your account specifics, go back to training if necessary, and spend less time complaining. You'd be amazed how less irritated you will feel when you know your job and don't have to be corrected continuously.
not sure Albert Einstein or C.S. Lewis would be considered "sheep" now would they

It reminded me of sm
leatherface on the Texas Chainsaw Massacres. Guess I should stay away from the spooky movies.
LOL, that's sweet! You reminded me of
a dictation I had today. This radiologist was talking like he was gushing love all through his transvaginal ultrasound report. I had to ask myself if this dictation was for real (hadn't transcribed for him before)! Then, his next dictation was all gushy too, and it was a renal ultrasound on a man, so what a treat, huh?!!! I can actually type really fast to it!

Enjoy your sweetie!

BTW, I love it when the beagle (John J) snuggles by me on the floor and the cat (Buster) tries to lay across my two arms while I'm typing!
You know, your post reminded me of the fact that...
people in general think doctors are here to serve us as humanitarians, as if they don't have a right to make money being a doctor.  It's as if they are evil if they want to make money at their profession.  Last time I checked, people who attend medical school are often spending their own money (6 figures plus), taking out loans, or working hard to qualify for a scholarship, and why shouldn't they make money after they finish all that schooling?  Now if the govt wanted to pay their training, some doctors could choose that route and be happy with the reimbursement the govt. deems fair.  I think that will ultimately be the only way we will come up with a medical care system for those who cannot afford insurance.  In the UK you can choose govt care or private insurance.  In Canada you are not allowed to practice medicine privately without HUGE penalties.  A complicated matter, for sure.
yes me too nn - i need to be reminded not to feed the trolls -
it is hard like you say, especially since that's probably just what they want - to get everyone riled up and upset. We are better than that !
I too am reminded of a story, and a comment
I was transcribing a doctor's dictation in his office. He was walking by while I was listening to something garbled. I put the transcriber on speaker and asked him what he was saying. He could not figure it out! He gave me some other sentence to put in there. Sadly, his dictation never improved after that.

My comment: While working in the hospital we often could pick out some of the best docs by the way they dictated, we could also pick out the worst ones. Most of the time we were right.
teachers
I'm also married to an educator. He is a very intelligent man and graduated at the top of his class but chose to teach. It is true that some teachers just go through the motions but "You get what you pay for". Teachers are not treated as professionals and who suffers the most, Our children.
I failed to mention

I want to purchase a laptop both for my own use and the fact the company I want to work for does not lease out computers.  So, do I still not use a wireless router as the other poster stated also.  Forgive me for being in the dark ages, but what is the ethernet cord that I should have?  Is that some sort of card for the laptop.  I think I remember something about this when inquiring on laptops awhile back, and that most newer ones already have this.  Thanks for the help.

They failed to mention
In the rosy outlook for MT positions the editors, who need to correct the work done in 3rd world countries, are only getting paid what the idiots in the 3rd world contries didn't have the knowledge to get right.
ROFL - it kind of reminded me of the Indian companies who advertise that all of their transcriptioni
have degree, physiology, engineering, some are even doctors.  Yea, that convinces me that they could do this.
There are no age requirements for teachers
You are never too old to further your education. I know seniors who take college courses for self-improvement. My daughter will graduate in 9 months to be a teacher and she is 37. Teachers are high in demand. There is such a shortage, but don't go into it just for the money. If you do, you will be a crappy teacher.
I know the teachers mention the
standardized tests they will be taking in the spring, but I don't think it is emphasized as strongly as in your area. A month before they come on strong...
and...once the tests are over the school might as well be because it seems the teachers don't want to do anything after that.
Teachers and their expectations...
Isn't it crazy that the teacher would expect you to buy one of these things for a project? I don't know how much they run, but still...geez! My DD has a lit teacher that always comes up with crazy things to do, which always means something crazy for me to go buy! Feel like telling her if she'll supply it, we'd be happy to comply! Good luck...
once again, you have failed to show me how I am being negative...
Whatever...Obviously, you are too thick-skulled to understand what I am saying...
I tested for a National and also failed. sm
I thought I did well. I transcribed according to the BOS book, but most of my errors were charged because of it. It looks like if I didn't use the BOS book method, I probably would have passed. Who knows? Just don't give up. I took a test with another company and am now working.
I think I failed a national test...
also, but I got a job with a smaller company, a job I much prefer! My accuracy rating is 99% at the company I'm at, so I really think it has to do with the BOS. I am still typing according to the BOS2 and apparently there is a newer one where they've changed a lot of things??
Umm, teachers don't make squat either.
The pay's about the same for a Transcriptionist at the local hospital with bonuses and incentive included as it is for a teacher for the school district. They put in long hours, too. It's not just 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with summers off. They have to grade papers, extracurricular requirements, go to meetings, fill out federal forms, go to training, keep their certification updated, etc.
Many MTs have failed tests with 20+ years of experience. sm
It shocks me how incredibly BAD some "experienced" MTs do on those tests. I cringe to think of what they've been typing for years. So, people will claim that they're "all that," and they may well be, but recruiters won't know it unless you prove it.

Also, a resume is occasionally more fiction than fact, which I've seen proved out more than once. Years of op note experience and they can't spell Vicryl. Ayup! Sure thing.

failed skills test for national sm

Hi all.  I have been an MT for 10 years and took a skills test for a national and FAILED.

Oh my goodness, talk about a slap in the face!  All I know is they require 90% accuracy and apparently I failed that.

It has me questioning my skills at this point.  PLEASE tell me others of you have had this problem!

Thanks

With 10 years under her belt and the distinction of one of the top teachers..you'd think she'd
how to handle a couple parents..is she getting tired of that grade?
I grew up in FL, and my black teachers used a lot of these phrases...sm
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet because every northerner I know has asked me about this..."I'm fixin'to" as in, "Get your shoes on, we're fixin' to go to church." 2 of my 5 elementary teachers were black, and they both used this phrase all the time, so it was perfectly normal to us. Those teachers weren't any less educated, they were just native southerners raised in segregated communities. My hometown was still segregated well into the '80s.
It's funny, half the phrases people are naming on here I wouldn't have thought were southern-specific, they're that common to me.
Teachers/tutors new Indian enterprise
National news a couple of weeks ago - kids that need tutors can now get a good deal on an Indian tutor over the internet.  During story internet connection went down and class was dismissed.
It's not just "irresponsible"! Friends of mine, condom failed, they now have a
was on BCP, did not miss a dose, and ended up pregnant... TWICE! Fortunately for them, this was not a tragedy and they are raising their children happily. One of them had to get "fixed" however.

So please don't assume this is ONLY irresponsible behavior! Stuff happens and it happens to middle-aged or older MARRIED people!
I failed to rejoin AAMT aka ADHI four years ago.
Anal retentive MTs are a nightmare. A new group should be comprised of the MTs who have a SENSE OF HUMOR and a SENSE OF THE RIDICULOUS.
I hear they the Education Department Needs 2M teachers by 2015
I think thats a great idea. English teacher... Hmmm.. What are the requirements?
Let your teachers make recommendations, but a basic Singer or Sears machine is fine. nm

When I grade I look for...
...correct terminology and spelling, and nothing else. I once scored a report with 17 spelling errors. I told the applicant that I failed her on those. She replied "I don't have time to watch for that c--p!"

Does anyone with that kind of work ethic attitude think they're going to get hired? Who'd want to work with them? Any of you account managers or QA peeps out there want them on YOUR team? Didn't think so.

Anyway, I know where the spots are that the inexperienced or too cocky people will screw up, and that's pretty much all I look at. I leave it to QA to teach/correct areas that need to be changed, if need be. I just want people who know the terminology and can use it correctly.

Recently I took a test where I was dinged for NOT using the JCAHO dangerous abbreviations. However, how is one to know what to do when there are no instructions whether to use intelligent transcription or transcribe verbetim? That's where the people who are doing the scoring need to actually USE their gray matter rather than assume that people who are testing have consulted their psychic the night before to know what that particular QA peep is going to get their panties in a bunch over.

I'll get down off my soapbox now. Lol....
My son has been on an IEP since 1st grade sm
he is now in the 5th. The IEP helped a lot. He has accomodations when taking tests i.e. tests are read aloud to him, when he has math a tutor sits right beside him and he has speech 3 days a week for 30 minutes.
My son is currently in 5th grade. sm
I have to say his elementary school has been great and it is a public school. In fact, his kindergarten teacher was the best anyone could ask for. She really got him interested in school and loving it. In fact, I was the only one crying his first day of school. He was in heaven.

I would suggest going and sitting in on the classes and spending time in the school to get familar with the staff. My son's school has a wonderful staff all the way down to the school janitors who are husband and wife and treat the kids great.

Although there are a couple of teachers that I personally did not care for, we were given the opportunity to request teachers and they were honored if at all possible. I was able to avoid the couple of teachers that I did not care for. They may have been great, but I just felt that their style and personality didn't match my son. This really makes a difference; a child needs someone he is not intimated by to learn from. If they are afraid to ask questions, the teacher will never know if they need help.

This is my son's last year in elementary school. I have to say I do have reservations about our middle school and high school. After we built our home, they redistricted our community into one of the worst middle schools and high schools in our county. We have been considering private school, but the schools close to us are so expensive. We could put him through college cheaper than middle school and high school.

Sorry so long, but I know all information helps especially when our children are concerned.
Hi TIA, my DH is a former 7th grade teacher and now....
is a high school principal.  Don't people like that ignorant poster above really burn you up?  As the wife of a teacher, I can vouch for the long hours and dedication that teachers put in.  My DH can talk you through a typical week that will prove that most teachers put in 12 months worth of full-time hours and MORE in the 9.5 months that they work.  That doesn't even count the summer hours preparing for the next school year.  I have sat home on my anniversary because my husband is off chaperoning a trip so the kids can attend a band competition a thousand miles away.  We have spent endless dollars of our own supplementing these trips, buying things for needy students, and making "sports supervision duty" a family night out so we can spend a little time with hubby and Dad.  Don't even get me started on the vandalism that we've incurred over the last 15 years.  Shall I start with the car that some little gang banger started by pouring a gallon of gas into our car and setting it on fire, because he was suspended?  Or how about the rocks put into our gas tank of our car?  Teachers ought to get hazard pay!  Wasn't an asst. principal just gunned down last week?  Teachers don't become teaches for the money, believe me.  Where else can you finish a bachelor's degree and an 18 month credentialing program for a whopping 25,000 dollars a year (in some areas, more in others).  A car mechanic makes twice as much as that!!!  So, I pretty much dismiss those people who think teachers sit on their butts all day and skate out the door at 2:30.  Their kids are probably the worst of them all.
Low grade olive oil is the best.

Fourth grade
Sounds like she is in 4th grade (age 9)? Most people agree that that is a tough year. I remember it was for me and my twin sister. I was not comfortable with competitive sports, but I think it would have given me confidence (and an outlet for all the negative energy of anxiety) if I had taken martial arts after school, or gymnastics or something like that to give me confidence and strength.
