I think pretty much this debate was McCain's best hope. His strength, according to most, is foreign policy. I thought that all O really needed to do was avoid being seen as weak on foreign affairs. He more than lived up to that. The clear frontrunner is O. This debate did not change that. The next two pres debates will show O's strengths and Mc weaknesses. The Sarah/Joe debate is going to be high theatre. I am so looking forward to that one.
Another point. I don't get all misty when Mc tells his bracelet/POW stories. I think they are blatant attempts at pulling emotional strings and I cringe when anyone, anywhere tries to manipulate me. I am saying he uses stories for his benefit instead of feeling them. So as far as I am concerned they backfire.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The official witnesses to Saddam Hussein's impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities.
With U.S. forces on high alert for a surge in violence, the Iraqi government readied all the necessary documents, including a red card - an execution order introduced during Saddam's dictatorship. As the hour of his death approached, Saddam received two of his half brothers in his cell on Thursday and was said to have given them his personal belongings and a copy of his will.
Najeeb al-Nueimi, a member of Saddam's legal team in Doha, Qatar, said he too requested a final meeting with the deposed Iraqi leader. His daughter in Amman was crying, she said 'Take me with you,' al-Nueimi said late Friday. But he said their request was rejected.
An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST. Also to be hanged at that time were Saddam's half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said.
The time was agreed upon during a meeting Friday between U.S. and Iraqi officials, said the adviser, who declined to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.
Saddam will be handed over shortly before the execution, the official said. The physical transfer of Saddam from U.S. to Iraqi authorities was believed to be one of the last steps before he was to be hanged. Saddam has been in U.S. custody since he was captured in December 2003.
Al-Nueimi said U.S. authorities were maintaining physical custody of Saddam to prevent him from being humiliated before his execution. He said the Americans also want to prevent the mutilation of his corpse, as has happened to other deposed Iraqi leaders.
The Americans want him to be hanged respectfully, al-Nueimi said. If Saddam is humiliated publicly or his corpse ill-treated that could cause an uprising and the Americans would be blamed, he said.
Munir Haddad, a judge on the appeals court that upheld Saddam's death sentence, said he was ready to attend the hanging and that all the paperwork was in order, including the red card.
All the measures have been done, Haddad said. There is no reason for delays.
As American and Iraqi officials met in Baghdad to set the hour of his death, Saddam's lawyers asked a U.S. judge for a stay of execution.
Saddam's lawyers issued a statement Friday calling on everybody to do everything to stop this unfair execution. The statement also said the former president had been transferred from U.S. custody, though American and Iraqi officials later denied that.
Al-Maliki said opposing Saddam's execution was an insult to his victims. His office said he made the remarks in a meeting with families of people who died during Saddam's rule.
Our respect for human rights requires us to execute him, and there will be no review or delay in carrying out the sentence, al-Maliki said.
State television ran footage of the Saddam era's atrocities, including images of uniformed men placing a bomb next to a youth's chest and blowing him up in what looked like a desert, and handcuffed men being thrown from a high building.
About 10 people registered to attend the hanging gathered in the Green Zone before they were to go to the execution site, the Iraqi official said.
Those cleared to attend the execution included a Muslim cleric, lawmakers, senior officials and relatives of victims of Saddam's brutal rule, the official said. He did not disclose the location of the gallows.
Raed Juhi, spokesman for the High Tribunal court that convicted Saddam, said documents related to the execution would be read to Saddam before the execution. The documents included the red card, al-Maliki's signed approval of the sentence and the appeal court's decision.
On Thursday, two half brothers visited Saddam in his cell, a member of the former dictator's defense team, Badee Izzat Aref, told The Associated Press by telephone from the United Arab Emirates. He said the former dictator handed them his personal belongings.
A senior official at the Iraqi defense ministry also confirmed the meeting and said Saddam gave his will to one of his half brothers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Saddam's lawyers later issued a statement saying the Americans gave permission for his belongings to be retrieved.
An Iraqi appeals court upheld Saddam's death sentence Tuesday for the killing of 148 people who were detained after an attempt to assassinate him in the northern Iraqi city of Dujail in 1982. The court said the hanging should take place within 30 days.
There had been disagreements among Iraqi officials in recent days as to whether Iraqi law dictates the execution must take place within 30 days and whether President Jalal Talabani and his two deputies had to approve it.
In his Friday sermon, a mosque preacher in the Shiite holy city of Najaf called Saddam's execution God's gift to Iraqis.

I was very impressed with Charlie Gibson. I am not an ABC news watcher, so I did not know what to expect. He brought up all the important issues involved in the contradictions between Maverick and Reformer claims including per diem, keeping the money from bridge to nowhere, lobbyists for Alaska, abuse of power in Troopergate, etc. I thought he allowed her to expose her lack of knowledge on foreign affairs. I thought he, for the most part, keep questioning her on points when she tried to evade questions by throwing out the slogans and talking points.
The one point that I had not heard before was the fact that the sendoff for the soldiers she staged in Alaska was timed to be on 9/11 for the publicity, and that the soldiers were not in fact going to leave for 2 to 3 more weeks.
All in all, I thought it was a good introduction of the actual Sarah Palin. When you add the tape of McCain disparaging mayors and short-time governors, it was a definitive package for those who have not yet made up their minds in this election.

My answer: First of all, to say that going into Iraq was revenge does a huge disservice to the people who died on 9-11 and to the soldiers who have died in Iraq since. I think a statement like that is unconsciable. It is your right to say it, my right to disagree strongly, which I do. I have a hard time understanding how any American could think that.
Second, I have never referred to anyone as lily-livered. No one WANTS to kill. You and the left keep saying that like Republicans or anyone NOT liberal (sound familiar?) WANTS to kill. That is just nuts. However, some people do believe that our way of life, our country, are worth dying for or killing for if necessary. That being said, for diplomacy to work, both sides have to be interested in a peaceful outcome. In what alternate reality do you imagine that Saddam Hussein, Al Qaeda, Al-Zawahiri, the Taliban, or ANY terrorist would be interested in a peaceful outcome, when their stated purpose is the destruction of the United States and Israel, and eventually anything not Muslim? Where in there do you see ANY room for diplomacy? THAT is what I mean when I (not others who post, I cannot speak for them) say *head in the sand.* Do you actually believe that diplomacy will work with these people? I do not for the life of me understand how you can look at the history of terrorist attacks, their escalation, and say that somehow talking with these people will make a difference. Bush damage
What you described is only the damage that Americans were lucky enough to have accidentally been discovered, things that were the complete opposite of what he said he was doing. We still don't know what other illegal or immoral things he has done in the last 5 years that just haven't been discovered yet. Plus, he has 3 more years of damage to do. I worry very much for the future of this country. I hope we can all survive it without him getting us all killed. He's a very dangerous man.

How do the Pubs turn Gustav into a political advantage? We already see them shameless working all the angles and considering their options, but let's face it. They need all the help they can get now that Gustav has blow the wind out of the sails of their copy-cat showcase celebrity VP pick. It's just as well. A 48-hour ride on that boat was just about all the excitement JM could stand at one time.
Any political capital the RNC is trying to get out of Gustav is doomed to fail. What's a party to do? The collective sigh of relief they all are breathing over the Bush and Cheney speech cancellations to go put on their compassionate conservative hats and polish up their leadership image is producing wind gusts up to a Category 10. How can they celebrate the debut of their golden girl on a split screen they share with the drowning of New Orleans Part II and hold their collective breaths at the same time and pray those levies don't break again? They can't have that, now can they?

Two new national polls show Barack Obama expanding his lead over John McCain to a seven-point margin, thanks in large part to two big problems for McCain. The first one is the economy -- and the second is Sarah Palin.
The numbers from Pew: Obama 49%, McCain 42%, with a ±3.5% margin of error. And from Time: Obama 50%, McCain 43%, with a ±3% margin of error.
In the Time poll, 65% say their personal economic situation has declined in the last year, and this group is going 59% for Obama. In the Pew poll, Obama is trusted over McCain to improve the economy by 51%-33%.
And here's the bad news for Palin. Time says that McCain is losing women at a faster clip than Palin was able to gain them -- before the two conventions, Obama led among women by ten points, which then narrowed to one point after she was picked. Now he leads by 17 points.
And in Pew, Palin's public image has taken a very serious fall. Three weeks ago, Palin was seen as qualified to be president by a 52%-39% margin. Now that number has been reversed: Only 37% think she's qualified, and 51% say she is not.

It was her choice. She contacted SNL and asked to go on. McCain made some comment about the vast amount of viewers and I guess they thought it was a great way to reach the public but in this case, you really don't want to reach the public by reminding them how you won't answer questions and how unqualified you are. It was just odd to see her there. She wasn't funny and she didn't do anything to help herself. Weird!

Look at their voting records - this is not the direction the country needs to go in. We need a real leader. Someone who will not let us down. Someone who cared more about the people that even when he had a chance to leave the pow camp he chose to stay and not leave his fellow soldiers there. We need a fresh face to Washington to give them the good kick in the pants they need (thank you Gov. Palin - know you'll do an excellent job). Obama is not a fresh face to Washington (he has been there for a couple years now), and Joe Biden has been there for I believe over 30 years (not exactly sure of the number of years, but think its over 30 or close to 30) - so where's the new face Obama promised us.
It's time for a change we can trust in. Time for America and Americans to come first. Not more of the same just labeled as democrats giving false hopes. Has anyone noticed that he said he believes 97K is not middle class. It used to be 250K, now I hear 97K. How much farther down is he going to go. Maybe he believes people who make $12K a year are the middle income. This is not a man I can trust. It's too bad too because I had high hopes for him when I voted for him over Hillary. Americans are not the only ones who are ready to turn the page and write a new chapter in the post-911 era. I believe the challenges are so complex that they are no longer amenable to an imperialist or isolationist approach.
There is no one nation that can single-handedly defeat terrorism, a stateless, nationless phenomenon, fueled in part by Anti-American sentiment. The very essence of the challenge dictates the need for alliance, cooperation, concerted efforts, mutual respect and multicultural/multinational involvement. We don't get there by waging more wars. In fact, a radical departure from the most recent approaches is in order.
If Bush can come to the table for the sake of the economy (G7), our leadership certainly should come to the table for the sake of security.

Islam is a monotheist religion, just as Christianity is. The kind of politicized Christianity you have expressed is of the sort that was the driving force behind the Crusades...bloody terrorism in its very worst manifestation. Politicized religion in any form has NOTHING to do with God and the brand that you are promoting here is every bit as much of a terrorist act as a suicide bombing. About 2 to 3 months ago, someone tried
to break into my house with me home working. They purposely tried to scare me. They went around my house banging on the walls and windows. As we live in the country, I do have a gun in my office. As I was calling 911, they were trying to get in the front door. I yelled at them that if they went any further, I was going to shoot and the police were on their way. Thankfully, this did stop them. But if they would have come through the door, I really believe I would have shot them. I still have problems sleeping!

Six months to a year
I'd like see what happens in six months to a year when our economy is still in the toilet, more and more people are still without jobs and losing them if the sheeple will still be saying Obama is the answer to their prayers. Their eyes will be open then but it will be too late.
Last year, it took 5 months before
we could call our money ours. Not 3 months. Soon, we will just be getting a weekly allowance if all the crap keeps going.

So, along with the promise to get all the troops out of Iraq (reneged already), along with the promise to do a line-by-line and stop earmarks (there were only 900+ on the bill he just signed - reneged already), will be the "I'm sorry, but the economy is lookin better and we have to raise taxes"...that will be the next one he reneges on. Unless of course you are in that bracket who gets refunds when you don't even pay taxes...is that where you are? No wonder you love him. All hail the great and powerful 0. lol.
The Doctor Will See You—In Three Months
The health-care reform debate is in full roar with the arrival of Michael Moore's documentary Sicko, which compares the U.S. system unfavorably with single-payer systems around the world. Critics of the film are quick to trot out a common defense of the American way: For all its problems, they say, U.S. patients at least don't have to endure the endless waits for medical care endemic to government-run systems. The lobbying group America's Health Insurance Plans spells it out in a rebuttal to Sicko: "The American people do not support a government takeover of the entire health-care system because they know that means long waits for rationed care."
In reality, both data and anecdotes show that the American people are already waiting as long or longer than patients living with universal health-care systems. Take Susan M., a 54-year-old human resources executive in New York City. She faithfully makes an appointment for a mammogram every April, knowing the wait will be at least six weeks. She went in for her routine screening at the end of May, then had another because the first wasn't clear. That second X-ray showed an abnormality, and the doctor wanted to perform a needle biopsy, an outpatient procedure. His first available date: mid-August. "I completely freaked out," Susan says. "I couldn't imagine spending the summer with this hanging over my head." After many calls to five different facilities, she found a clinic that agreed to read her existing mammograms on June 25 and promised to schedule a follow-up MRI and biopsy if needed within 10 days. A full month had passed since the first suspicious X-rays. Ultimately, she was told the abnormality was nothing to worry about, but she should have another mammogram in six months. Taking no chances, she made an appointment on the spot. "The system is clearly broken," she laments.
It's not just broken for breast exams. If you find a suspicious-looking mole and want to see a dermatologist, you can expect an average wait of 38 days in the U.S., and up to 73 days if you live in Boston, according to researchers at the University of California at San Francisco who studied the matter. Got a knee injury? A 2004 survey by medical recruitment firm Merritt, Hawkins & Associates found the average time needed to see an orthopedic surgeon ranges from 8 days in Atlanta to 43 days in Los Angeles. Nationwide, the average is 17 days. "Waiting is definitely a problem in the U.S., especially for basic care," says Karen Davis, president of the nonprofit Commonwealth Fund, which studies health-care policy.
All this time spent "queuing," as other nations call it, stems from too much demand and too little supply. Only one-third of U.S. doctors are general practitioners, compared with half in most European countries. On top of that, only 40% of U.S. doctors have arrangements for after-hours care, vs. 75% in the rest of the industrialized world. Consequently, some 26% of U.S. adults in one survey went to an emergency room in the past two years because they couldn't get in to see their regular doctor, a significantly higher rate than in other countries.
There is no systemized collection of data on wait times in the U.S. That makes it difficult to draw comparisons with countries that have national health systems, where wait times are not only tracked but made public. However, a 2005 survey by the Commonwealth Fund of sick adults in six nations found that only 47% of U.S. patients could get a same- or next-day appointment for a medical problem, worse than every other country except Canada.
The Commonwealth survey did find that U.S. patients had the second-shortest wait times if they wished to see a specialist or have nonemergency surgery, such as a hip replacement or cataract operation (Germany, which has national health care, came in first on both measures). But Gerard F. Anderson, a health policy expert at Johns Hopkins University, says doctors in countries where there are lengthy queues for elective surgeries put at-risk patients on the list long before their need is critical. "Their wait might be uncomfortable, but it makes very little clinical difference," he says.
The Commonwealth study did find one area where the U.S. was first by a wide margin: 51% of sick Americans surveyed did not visit a doctor, get a needed test, or fill a prescription within the past two years because of cost. No other country came close.
Few solutions have been proposed for lengthy waits in the U.S., in part, say policy experts, because the problem is rarely acknowledged. But the market is beginning to address the issue with the rise of walk-in medical clinics. Hundreds have sprung up in CVS, Wal-Mart (WMT ), Pathmark, (PTMK ) and other stores—so many that the American Medical Assn. just adopted a resolution urging state and federal agencies to investigate such clinics as a conflict of interest if housed in stores with pharmacies. These retail clinics promise rapid care for minor medical problems, usually getting patients in and out in 30 minutes. The slogan for CVS's Minute Clinics says it all: "You're sick. We're quick."

In four short months
(1/3 of a year, 1/12 of his term) O has put this country further in debt than any previous president. With the complicity of congress he is printing money like a drunken counterfeiter. He has stood the US on its head and emptied its pockets. He is actually running some of its businesses as well. He has his eye on controlling healthcare. He is trying hard to disarm and silence dissenters, subtly at first, but this will become more heavy-handed as time passes.
Do the math. Must we really wait a full year (let along his full term) to figure how much deeper this hole is going to get? The laws of economics have not been suspended just because of his miraculous election. Government is not the answer, it is the problem.
Let's try this experiment: I'll keep doing what I've been doing (laying in food supplies, planting a garden, stacking firewood, saving money, storing other necessities, preparing to care for and defend my own family) and the rest of you keep doing what you've been doing (waiting for Obama's ''plan'' to work or for him to take care of you). We'll check back in a year and see who's preparations worked better. Okay?

The director of this film was actually for going into Iraq...he just blames the bad decisions he illustrates for what is happening now. I saw him interviewed; I can't remember the show. The DNC has been protecting Obama for 18 months....
they have not let him do an interview with anyone who didn't either get a thrill up their leg talking to him or were so enraptured with him they softballed every question. When he went on O'Reilly was the first time he went into an interview with someone who was not going to softball him, and he did not do much better than she did...and that is with 18 months surrounded by hundreds of advisors.
I have no doubt she will be fine talking to world leaders. We will never see the side of the person that talks to world leaders behind closed doors. I have as much faith in her as #2 talking to world leaders than I have with the #1 on the other ticket who wants to pander to them and frankly sell us down the river. He shows weakness...and her words were prophetic. When you face those guys, you don't blink. She made that case to Charlie Gibson, and she didn't blink. She kept eye contact way more than he did. And he had notes...she didn't. lol.
There was a comment a few months back that
a yard sale. That's my kind of gal... She's pretty and doesn't need to shop at those high end stores to look good. YOU BETCHA!!!!!

My sister lost her job several months ago
and she cannot find anyone hiring in her area or anywhere near her area. She is a registered nurse and is in the process of a divorce and is trying to raise 2 little girls.
Remember when RNs were needed everywhere? Now they can't even find jobs.

my kids are 2 and 2 months, so I doubt it...
but I do know plenty of people my age (30) who did not try it. I guess maybe because I came from a very conservative small town. Don't get me wrong, I know plenty who did, but none of my friends were smoking pot. But you know what---we do make our own alcohol ;), although it is harder to do than to grow pot.
Obama is only 5 months in office! I think
he has done MORE good than not so good, ESPECIALLY regarding FORGEIN politics, in this short time.
Maybe the ones who cannot stop criticizing Obama do not even realize how smart and diplomatic Obama is.
For example, regarding the election protests in Iran: Obama is cool, and observing, as he does not want to 'mingle in', NOT YET, whereas McCain immediately stated, as he is a 'hothead' that Obama is not tough enough, not doing enough and he should respond more fiercely! WRONG ! What good can come out of this when Khatemi and the cleric council agreed to recount the votes? Isn't this what US was always accused of? Intermingling in everything, and this too early?
I am actually always AMAZED how uninformed a lot of people are when it comes to foreign politics and foreign countries in general.
Even on this forum I can count them on my fingers and some I can even name (username).
These are the ones who have an open mind, independent, tolerant, fair, just and are knowlegable.

by the courts for criminally violating the US Constitution. When are they going to impeach him? We get 24/7 front page JonBenet coverage (very sad story), but nothing on the crooks in the White House. All the drama with Watergate and Clinton IMO pales in comparison to what is on this President's mantle. What a mess.

P.S. - Biden did not answer all of the questions and even the moderator had to say at one point that neither of them answered the question. Then the answers he did give didn't mean a thing. Another lawyer taking out of his you know what.
Biden lied on at least 10 occasions tonight and she had to keep pointing it out.
And he never did deny that O'No and he will raise taxes.
What's happening is that the dems are bloody mad that she did such a great job so they are flailing and don't know what to do.
As for winning the debate - time will tell.

Is Biden saying that America's current enemies - sorely aware of Obama's inexperience - plan to test a President Obama with similar crises, to see what he's made of?
I guess we all know how JFK's test turned out. "Bay of pigs" ring any bells.
Biden has also commented Obama's inexperience and said the job of the Presidency "does not lend itself to on the job training." He's also said Obama's "going to need help."
Well, I guess 'ol Joe has his foot in the door and that's all he really wanted. I don't believe he's changed his mind about our new President Elect. I think he saw his way into the White House and jumped on the bandwagon.
Great! We've got a totally inexperienced, slick snake set to run this country and the man who knows Obama will fail, has announced the Obama will be tested and fail, and probably wants Obama to fail, so he can come out smelling like a rose.
