At least in Catholicism

Spilling the beans on my religious affiliation, I'm a Cradle Catholic. At least 30+ (and that's a low of +'s) years ago, we had the concept of Purgatory. Keeping in mind that much of religion is subject to interpretation, the best way I can explain purgatory is by use of the metaphor. Purgatory is like sin jail. If you die with sins on your soul, without having received the final rites, but would otherwise have gained admittance to heaven, you serve out your 'sentence' in purgatory and then you gain admittance to purgatory. It's neither a horrific place nor a great place. It just is.
